DIXON – A few months ago, Kreider Services’ pediatric specialized needs care was crammed in “a tiny hallway,� according to Laura Watters. In her words, this made things “difficult.� Scheduling specialists was a problem, because professionals and families had one room to coordinate around. Sometimes the room might not have met the needs of a particular child, who would need to go elsewhere for care. And, located on Anchor Road, it placed families seeking pediatric treatment on the edge of Dixon. “It was kind of on the outskirts, in a tiny hallway, in a much bigger building that primarily served adults,� Watters said. Now, 7 weeks in with the new Florissa Center, Kreider Services is offering more. Located at the corner of Galena Avenue and First Street (in the old U.S. Bank building), Watters and other specialists have three stories to play with. The center opened March 25, thanks to partnerships with KSB Hospital, Sinnissippi Centers and a 3-year, $887,552 federal grant obtained in April 2014. Watters serves as director of autism and day services. Previously, Kreider focused specifically on autism. But the new space can offer so much more. So Florissa is working to do so. “It’s providing more family care coordination,� Watters said. “This shows that we are a strong community working together to support children in the area.� Before, there was one room. Now there are several, including a gross motor skills area in the lobby; a physical therapy room designed for children 3 and under; several multipurpose rooms that better fit the needs of specialists; a lounge that caters to adolescents; and offices to house staff and others who could join down the road. The diversity of spaces allows for large and small group sessions and more availability for one-on-one therapy. The grant also enables Florissa to focus on more than just autism. Having worked with Kreider, Watters said there were a number of areas workers couldn’t address: ADHD, anxiety, depression, social skills, physical therapy. Extra funding means 50 new types of resources are contained at Florissa. “We saw so many kids who didn’t have autism,� Watters said. “We realized there’s a need for more services for all families with children with specialized needs.� Now, “we have the ability to see more kids at a time,� she said. “Just having a
little more space has created more flexibility with our children. The idea is families will have more supports in one place, as opposed to having to be bounced around.� Even being in the heart of downtown is beneficial. Sessions can take upward of 40 minutes, Watters said. Families have the option to wait in a spacious lobby, or, at their choosing, they’re a block away from running errands at local businesses. The proximity to KSB Hospital and other medical resources also helps. And Watters likes how the location gives Florissa “good visibility.� On the heels of the transition, management is continuing to look at ways to evolve services and maximize the center’s potential. According to Watters, Sinnissippi partnered with Florissa to recently obtain another grant for $600,000 over the next 3 years – opening up more possibilities. The center is in the phase of “establishing sustainability,� Watters said. This means continuing to look at what other types of programs can be offered. “We’re hoping to increase the amount of therapy, so they’re not just coming in and getting a diagnosis,� she said. “We can give them some more supports. ... The federal grant allows us some flexibility, and we’re looking from a sustainability standpoint at how we can build.� For now, the center appears to have a solid foundation. New services – such as comprehensive diagnostics – have a wait list of 60 families, “which would keep us busy for the rest of the year,� Watters said. Patients come from as far south as the Quad Cities and as far north as Galena. The center employees 14 full- and part-time workers; within the next few months, that might increase to 20 professionals working with and at Florissa on a regular basis. To Watters, it’s OK to be busy. The services used and amount of interest shows that the Florissa Center meets a regional need. “It’s just a new name in a new place,� she said. “People know about us. I think the word is out.�

$400K in renovations on docket

OREGON – A $50,000 state grant will help with $400,000 in upgrades and renovations that will, among other things, make historic Oregon Public Library handicapped-accessible. The library is one of 17 in the state to win grants totaling more than $700,000, Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced Monday. The Oregon library’s director, Andrew Dettmer, said the Live and Learn Construction grant will go toward installing an elevator to bring the library into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “It will give us a stepfree entrance to the building. That’s been a big problem for us,” Dettmer said. “This grant money will help with the costs of installing a groundlevel entrance into the building, an elevator that will allow patrons access to all three floors of the building, and create handicapped accessible
restrooms.” Plans call for building a small addition just for the elevator onto the northwest corner of the library at Third and Jefferson streets. “It’s a matching grant, so we will put the same amount with it,” Dettmer said. The elevator will cost about $100,000. Another part of meeting ADA standards will be lowering book stacks and increasing space between them, Dettmer said. He wrote the grant application in November and presented it to the board from White’s office several weeks later. “They liked the plan, and they know we need it,” he said. “We’ve been battling the ADA issue for a long time. Accessibility has been an issue for our library and patrons for decades, and these renovations will make it easier for everyone to take advantage of the services the library provides.” The building is a Carnegie library, built in 1908 with money donated by Pittsburgh businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ADA projects are part of a bigger plan to make renovations to the library and address at least some of the space issues the library has
dealt with over the years. Renovations will include completely remodeling the basement and moving the children’s room there. Children’s activities are now held in the third floor art gallery. The change will allow the gallery to be devoted entirely to artworks, as well as making more space for children’s books and programming, Dettmer said. Work is expected to begin Aug. 1 and tentatively set to be completed by Christmas. The Ogle County Genealogical Society office will move this summer from the library’s basement, along with the microfilm and reader, to Ogle County’s Historical Society headquarters at the Ruby Nash Home at Sixth and Jefferson Streets. Dettmer said architect Gary Anderson of Rockford is finalizing estimates, but the renovations are expected to cost $400,000.
The library board has saved about $350,000 – including interest – in its working cash fund over the past several years, Dettmer said, and that will be used to pay for the renovations. He said the board has not yet determined whether to borrow the money, using the fund as collateral, or spend the money, emptying the fund. The library board tried twice in the past 5 years to get voters in the district to approve a referendum to build a new library at Sixth and Washington streets, west of the Oregon Post Office. Voters rejected the idea of a new building and higher taxes in November 2010, and again in April 2013 when the plan had been revised. Dettmer said the board has not decided whether to sell the property where the new library would have been located.

OREGON – Oregon sixth-graders helped release 45 pheasant chicks on Tuesday. John Barnhart, natural resource manager for the Oregon Park District, gave a brief explanation on flora and fauna and ecosystems before having students from Nate Rogers’ and Mike Ellis’ classes help release the chicks into the wild south of Fairgrounds Park. The classes have been studying biodiversity and outdoor education. Barnhart raised the 5-and-a-half-week-old Chinese ringneck pheasants since they were 2 days old, he said. Two students carried the pheasants into the woods, and all the students watched as they left the cage … some with Barnhart’s assistance. “How many people here could live out in the open?” said Barnhart. “We’d just drop you off in the middle of big open field and let you fend for yourself? You wouldn’t last very long, would you? You’d need a house, you need a habitat, and so do pheasants.” The chicks eventually exited the cage and dispersed into the woodland area. “See how well they blend in? That’s the nat-

Fourth threat found at Reagan campus Protocols lead to confession same day writing was found in girls’ bathroom BY JERMAINE PIGEE
DIXON – For the fourth time this school year, a threatening message was found in a Dixon school. A message was found Thursday in a girl’s bathroom at Reagan Middle School.
“Due to protocols in place at the middle school, the offending student was quickly identified and subsequently confessed to writing the threat,” Superintendent Michael Juenger said in a recorded message. Juenger said the threat read “someone is going
to die tomorrow.” It’s the third threat at Reagan this year. Previously, a threat also was reported at Madison Elementary School, which shares a building with the middle school. “School officials take all threats seriously and we will inform you of any threats,” Juenger said in
the recorded message. “In this case, the threat was vague, the student has confessed, and there is no reason to believe there are any upcoming safety concerns at Reagan Middle School.” Classes will be in session today. Juenger said punish-
ment could range from suspension to expulsion, but each disciplinary case is treated individually. One positive that came from this latest threat, Juenger said, is how quickly officials were able to find the student. “Students have to sign in and out with their
teachers, so we know who is in the hallways and at what time,” Juenger said. “We also have custodians who go through the school at various times checking for graffiti or other threatening things, and we have cameras in the buildings.”

Three schools get new principals Each has served that role in other schools BY JERMAINE PIGEE
ROCK FALLS – This fall, teachers and students at three Rock Falls schools will have new leaders. Kyle Ackman, principal at Merrill Elementary School, will take over the same role at Rock Falls Middle School. He’ll replace Jeff Brown, who will retire from the middle school after 29 years of service. Brody Rude, who has spent the past 5 years
as principal at Dillon Elementary School, will succeed Ackman at Merrill. Rock Falls native Roy Calkins, principal at Prophetstown High School, will become the new principal at Dillon. “[Ackman] requested to move to the middle school, and that was granted,” said Dan Arickx, superintendent of the school district. “We also made an internal decision to move [Rude] up to Merrill School.”

In addition to his time at Dillon, Rude also spent 4 years as assistant principal at Rock Falls High School. In his first year, Rude, 39, will make $84,048 as the leader of Merrill, a thirdthrough fifth-grade school. Ackman, 38, said he
made the request so he could continue his natural progression through the district. Kyle He spent Ackman 8 years as principal at Dillon and 5 in that role at Merrill. His contract includes a salary of $96,520 in his first year at the sixththrough eighth-grade school. “I felt like it was good timing,” Ackman said.

STERLING – As I walk into Mom’s Diner in downtown Sterling, one thing I notice all over the restaurant is the color red. The cushions on the chairs and in the booths are red and black. The table mats are red, and the servers in the restaurant wear red shirts. “I like the color red,” says Mudae Xheka, owner of Mom’s Diner. “I just really like the color,” Xheka said. Mom’s Diner is a family-owned and operated diner that serves breakfast and lunch 6 days a week. It has been in business for only 4 months, but Xheka, 35, says she already has regular customers. “We have a lot of the same faces,” says Xheka, who is from Macedonia, north of Greece in southeast Europe. The reason Xheka named the restaurant “Mom’s Diner” is simple – she is a mom. “I have three kids,” Xheka says with a chuckle. “This is nothing festive, but it’s something that I came up with.” The diner, in the former home of Twin City Cafe, is a great place to grab breakfast or lunch. On the inside of the restaurant, booths line up around the perimeter of the building. The center of the diner has tables and chairs. Large windows in front of the building show off downtown Sterling. Once you finish eating, a server will bring a receipt to your table, and you pay the cashier on your way out.
The breakfast menu is full of favorites, such as a meat trio omelette, which has smoked bacon, sausage, ham and American cheese; the popular Big Bird skillet, with grilled chicken, portobello mushrooms, spinach and avocado; and eggs Benedict, where English muffins are smothered with Canadian bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Lunch options include spaghetti with meat sauce, chicken Parmesan, and broiled shrimp. “I think what I have is a lot different than what everyone else around here has,” Xheka says.
