A new home for Hospice Much-needed facility for inpatient care coming to Sterling STERLING – Hospice of the Rock River Valley will break ground later this month for its hospice home. The ceremony is set for 11 a.m. May 26 at the site on the northeast side of North Avenue E, across the street from Morningside of Sterling at 2705 Ave. E. The nonprofit agency has provided home hospice and outpatient care for more than 30 years, but the hospice home will plug an inpatient services hole that exists in the area’s end-oflife care options. The agency serves Whiteside, Lee, Ogle, Carroll, and Bureau counties. The closest hospice home is about 30 miles away, at Oregon’s Serenity House. The agency was granted a license after the board and administration prepared a needs assessment and feasibility study for the project more than 3 years ago. The new 14,000-squarefoot building will house six patient suites, a nursing station, meditation room, and areas where families can sleep and eat. Hospice of the Rock River Valley will continue its home care and provide respite services for caregivers. Although construction soon will begin, the agency still needs donations.
The capital campaign, with a theme of “Growing A Tradition of Care,� kicked off Feb. 2, 2015. The cost of the project initially was estimated at $3.5 million, but the agency now is looking at about a $3 million price tag. “Our original estimates came in high, and we are finding ways to reduce the costs without negatively impacting services,� said Carolyn Spencer, hospice home project manager. Plans are for construction to begin in the fall, and the new facility to open its doors in spring 2017. They are ratcheting up the fundraising, including the addition of a text campaign, to raise $750,000, Spencer said. “Texting is a very easy way to donate, and it’s secure,� Spencer said. The agency started selling tickets for a Queen of Hearts raffle May 5, in partnership with Whiskey Barrel in Rock Falls. The first drawing will be at 7:30 p.m. May 25; tickets are 6 for $5. Other upcoming fundraisers include Quartermania, May 15 at the Sterling Moose; a golf outing June 24 at Deer Valley Country Club; and Tapas and ’Tinis on Aug. 27 at the Brandywine. Richard Prescott, the retired former owner of Prescott Construction, donated the land. He
winters in Arizona, but will be in town for the groundbreaking. Prescott has been involved Carolyn Spencer in other Hospice home h e a l t h care-relat- project manager ed projects locally. He built Parkway Center in Sterling in 1987, and made a large donation to get the Whiteside County Health Department’s dental clinic started. The workload involved in planning the hospice home project played a role in the timing of a leadership change at the agency. Spencer stepped down from the executive director post to focus on hospice house, and Emily Taylor started as director Jan. 11. “I knew I wanted to retire in the next couple of years, and when I decided to work on this project full time, it seemed like a good way to make the transition,� Spencer said. Taylor had been on the agency’s board for 2 years. At least five additional people will be hired before the building opens, and it’s likely more staff will be needed soon after, Spencer said.
An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.

When life hands you lemons … you bite into them to help a family, which is just what the Dixon City firefighters did Tuesday. Members of the department took a tart taste of the lemons and challenged Dixon police officers and Dixon Rural firefighters to do the same, while pledging money to help a Dixon girl with leukemia. Capt. Ryan Buskohl (left), Chief Tim Shipman and Deputy Chief Mark Callison were among the squinty-eyed firefighters who took part in a challenge to help raise money for 2-year-old Greer Bond. Greer, the daughter of Kel and Courtney Bond, has Philadelphia positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia and recently underwent a bone marrow transplant and will be spending several months in the hospital. As part of Greer’s Leukemia Lemon Challenge, people peel a lemon, eat it, post a video of their reaction on social media, and nominate their friends to do the same. Department starts work on new hiring list One officer joins force, but department still seven short BY PAM EGGEMEIER
STERLING – A new officer started Wednesday, but the Sterling Police Department still needs seven more to be at full staff. Harry Blomstrand, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago police force, will begin Sterling’s field training, a process that could take anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks. Chief Tim Morgan has been working with the city’s three-person Fire
and Police Commission to beef up his depleted workforce since taking over for Tim Morgan retired chief Police chief Ron Potthoff on Jan. 18. Morgan said the city’s police force has been fully staffed for only 1 week since he started 23 years ago, but when eight of 30 sworn officer jobs are open, it begins to take a toll on the

The good news is that there are no city budgetary issues that are limiting hiring, and more applications are coming in to compile a new hiring list. “We’ve gone through
our list that the commission put together in January, and we’re entering a new testing period,” Morgan said. Morgan is working to find a larger pool of applicant before the June 18 testing date. A mandatory orientation session for the candidates is planned for June 9. “We’re trying to reach more people, and get the word out,” Morgan said. “We have more applicants than for our
last testing, but we have seven positions to fill.” A hiring list is usually good for 2 years, but there is no one left on the list, so the commission has to test again. Morgan said there are a couple of candidates going to the police training institute, but it’s a lengthy process for the newbies. “One is in the last step, which is a medical exam, and we will know next week if he’ll be offered a position, and the other one is still in the first phase,” Morgan said. Morgan said an experienced officer like Blomstrand will be
ready for duty in a couple of months, but the untrained candidates need 12 weeks at the police training institute, and the additional 12 to 16 weeks of field training. “There are no shortcuts – it’s going to take time to recover from a shortage like this,” Morgan said. In the meantime, Morgan said the department will work closely with the schools and community groups, and just keep doing more with less. The starting salary for an entry level patrol officer in Sterling is about $40,000.

Woman creates memorials with glass, ashes Orders vary from one to 25 pieces BY STEPHANIE JAQUINS
OTTAWA (AP) – Veronica Kroeze’s mother died in 2004, and since then, her mother’s ashes had been displayed in an urn on her credenza in her living room. She recently heard of an option she felt would better memorialize her mother, Genevieve Shipp. “A friend of mine had her father’s ashes [used for cremation glass]. I was thrilled at the idea of being able to do something like that in remembrance of my mom.” Kroeze of Buda delivered her mother’s ashes to Laura Johnson, owner
of Starved Rock Hot Glass, who specializes in hand-blown glass art and jewelry. Kroeze had two orders for family, including necklace pendants, heart-shaped paperweights and an egg. The art infused with her mother’s ashes was for her brother, sister, niece and herself. Some family she told of her plans beforehand, and others she surprised by giving them as gifts. “I thought it was a great way to display the ashes,” she said. “It’s beautiful.” It’s about an hour drive from Buda in Bureau County to Johnson’s shop in Ottawa, but Kroeze didn’t mind. “I would do it all over again. It was wonderful.” Johnson said it’s common to have people travel for her services. The clos-
est custom glass businesses are in the Peoria and Chicago areas. She opened her business in 2009 and added cremation glass a few years ago after a few clients expressed an interest. “And it just exploded from there. Now, I work on ashes every single day. I have a list of orders. It keeps me very busy.” Each cremation glass piece takes her about 10 minutes to design. Throughout the process, Johnson doesn’t stand still. With each step, she’s heating, cooling and shaping the piece that includes just a sprinkle of ashes. To view the process, a video is on The Times website at mywebtimes.com. cremation glass orders a day. The orders vary from one to 25 pieces. “They’ll get one for each child, one for each grandkid,” Johnson said. “That way everyone has their own memorial piece. Each one is one of a kind, even if you choose the same colors, the same shape. Everyone has their own unique piece.” Sometimes she gets special requests, such as a family who wanted glass bluebirds. She’s working with the family to come up with a design. The client’s mother was a fan of bluebirds – it was her favorite bird. The family wants a bluebird for each of the women’s children and each of her grandchildren to remember her by with the ashes inside.

Mel Reynolds said in a handwritten court filing posted Tuesday that he wants to plead guilty to misdemeanor federal charges of failing to file a tax return. “I request to come to court at the earliest time possible to enter my plea of guilty,” Reynolds, who is acting as his own attorney, wrote in the filing. hearing is scheduled for May 19. U.S. District Judge John Darrah ordered him taken into custody. He is being held at a detention center in Kankakee.

Fried potato tacos an amazing twist to try The problem with the pre-fried U-shaped shells – the kind made famous by Taco Bell and Old El Paso – is that when you bite in, the filling slides out the side too easily. Plus, they are usually structurally unsound, crumbling apart after one bite. But fried tacos can be amazing. You just need to fry the tortilla with the filling already inside. Try fried potato tacos (see recipe). Break any of these rules if you want. The goal is not to adhere strictly to these tips but simply to eat more tacos. Experiment. Cook. Repeat.
Roasted Tomatillo Salsa Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 10 minutes Makes: about 1 cup 8 ounces tomatillos, husked, rinsed 1 to 2 serrano chilies 2 cloves garlic, unpeeled ½ teaspoon salt 1 handful fresh cilantro, chopped ½ white onion, chopped Place tomatillos, serranos and garlic cloves on a foil-lined baking sheet. Cover garlic with an additional layer of foil. Place under a hot broiler and cook until tomatillos are blackened on top, about 6 minutes. Flip tomatillos and serranos; blacken on the other side, about 5 minutes. Remove baking sheet from oven; allow everything to cool. Stem
serranos and peel garlic. Transfer tomatillos, serranos, garlic and salt to a blender. Process until almost smooth. Taste, and season with more salt if necessary. Transfer to a bowl; stir in cilantro and onion. Fried Potato Tacos Prep: 15 minutes Cook: 20 minutes Makes: 12 tacos 1 pound Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled, cubed into ½-inch pieces 1 teaspoon salt 12 corn tortillas 1 cup vegetable oil Roasted tomatillo salsa, see recipe ½ head red cabbage, thinly sliced ½ cup queso fresco 3 limes, quartered Heat a medium saucepan of water over high heat until boiling. Add cubed potatoes; reduce heat to a strong simmer. Cook until tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Drain potatoes in a colander. Transfer to a bowl, add salt and use a fork to mash until smooth. Heat a large skillet over medium. Warm the tortillas for a few seconds on each side until pliable. Spoon 2 tablespoons of mashed potato into each tortilla. Fold each tortilla over, pressing firmly to close. Heat the oil in the same
skillet over medium-high heat. Add as many tortillas as will fit in one layer, usually three. Cook until lightly browned on the bottom, 1 to 2 minutes; flip and brown on the other side, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer tacos to a plate lined with paper towels. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Serve tacos topped with salsa, a handful of sliced cabbage, queso fresco and a wedge of lime.
