DIXON – It’s farmers market season! Wednesday, a handful of vendors set up shop in Haymarket Square for the Dixon Park District’s second market of the season. Robin Ackerson, owner of Homegrown Perennials and Stuff, has been driving to the farmers market from Ohio for the past 5 or 6 years, she said. On this beautiful May morning, she’s already had about 10 people swing by to check out her wares – all organic, all grown in her greenhouse: vegetables, herbs, and flowers galore. “I don’t use any pesticides,” she says. “No -ides of any kind.” She also makes her own cement bird baths, using large leaves as molds. At the next booth down were Ed and Mary Kaminski, owners of Swirling Winds, a 3-acre farm in Earlville. This is their fourth year selling plants at the market. “We produce all heirloom seeds,” from hot peppers to parsley to kale to cabbage, Ed said. Wednesday, they also had fresh garlic and beautiful maple and hickory cutting boards that Ed makes

himself. They grow berries, too, and have fresh jams (Mary’s favorite is the strawberry lemon) and pickled hot peppers for sale. Barb Fane, of Dixon, taught art at AFC schools for 25 years. Now she’s just down the road, selling handmade crafts: bracelets and aprons and necklace holders. She retired in 2011, and has been crafting since. The farmers market gives her an outlet to sell a few things here and there, she said. Coming in July, WIC participants will be able to use some of their allowances to buy fresh produce. That month, they will receive vouchers to be used at approved farmers market vendors. To be approved to receive the WIC vouchers, farmers market vendors must be authorized by the state, said Kathy Schutz, director of maternal child health for the Lee County Health Department. “We will actually be going down to the farmers market and talking to farmers, because we figure that’s the easiest way to do it,” Schutz said. “We’re still on target to start July 1. We’re starting to tell our clients about it, and some of them are very excited.”

200 attend, hear stories of redemption

DIXON – A young, slender girl with long purple hair takes the microphone. “I’m very grateful that you guys are all here,” she says timidly in front of the audience of 200. “So, here’s my story: My name is Keri Chambers ...” What followed was a personal history of physical abuse, drug abuse, sexual abuse, homelessness, prostitution, and, finally, thanks to the help of Lee County Drug Court, recovery. She started regular IV heroin use when she was 13, but had previously tried it. “It was not my drug of choice by mistake,” she says. “Due to PTSD and other mental illnesses, heroin quickly stole my life away ... and gave me a place to hide away the pain in my heart.” At 16, she had a seizure, and that’s when her family found out about her abuse. She went into rehab, but when she came out she began using again. “It was my life,” she says. “It was my job every morning to figure out how to get through my day without going through withdrawals.” During her years of heavy use, she was homeless. She was a prostitute. She overdosed and died and was brought back to life multiple times. “I never thought I would be here in this chair telling my story. ... Change is possible.” She has been sober for 5 years, and now works at Sinnissippi Centers. “It’s an amazing feeling to wake up every morning and not want to end my life,” she says. She was one of three people scheduled to talk about their experiences with heroin as part of the forum put on by PRISM (Prevention, recovery, and information on substance abuse and mental health) of Lee County, formerly the Lee County Anti-Heroin Task Force. Before the testimonials began, Kevin Buss, senior clinician at Sinnissippi Centers, spoke on the specifics behind heroin addiction and why it is so addictive. Lee County Sheriff John Simonton talked about the drugs changing from expensive and rare, to not so expensive, and common. Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller explained the Good Samaritan Act, which offers protection against possession charges for someone calling 911 in an overdose situation. And then Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss spoke toward the importance of working to fight heroin as a group. After Keri’s emotional talk, there was Stephanie H., the mother of an addict, who talked about heroin abuse from a parent’s perspective. “We were the Cleavers, damn it,” she says, talking about the shock and frustration that came upon realizing their “old soul” of a son, the one who was interested in World War II and would listen to his grandfather’s stories, the one who spent his 18th birthday as a guardian on an Honor Flight to Washington D.C., the one who made sergeant in the Army – that son, was a heroin addict. Before, she called herself an Army mom. Then, an addict’s mom. Now she calls herself an advocate mom. “Like any disease, addiction can strike any family at any time,” Stephanie says. “Unfortunately, there’s a stigma that’s attached to it. If you tell people that your child has cancer, they come running. If you tell people your child is an addict, they run like hell. “It’s time we talk about it. It’s time we all get educated about addiction. It’s time we break that stigma.” Next up was Nikki Perez, who talked about her experience with first alcohol, then weed, then acid, mushrooms, pills, ecstasy, cocaine, and finally heroin. “The first night [of doing heroin] was a real eye-opener,” Nikki says. “I had been doing so many uppers that the first time I did heroin, I felt totally relaxed. This drug turned my relationship upside-down. Constant argu-

We were pawning electronics and jewelry, stealing form our jobs. This was all part of feeding our addiction. “It wasn’t fun anymore; it became a part of our job.” That’s when someone called the cops on her, for a possible DUI, and she was arrested for possession of controlled substance, among other things. “I wish I knew the person who had called in my plates,” she says. When she was finally released from jail, the first thing she did was call an inpatient treatment facility and get herself a bed. The next thing she did, and for the remainder of the near future, all she wanted to do, was to gaze at the stars. “I actually had to feel for once,” she says. Now she works in the Lee County Public Defenders office, a job she never thought she would get in a million years, given her history with drug abuse. She was wrong. The office told her that she was exactly what they needed, someone to reach out to clients, to talk with them, to help them. “Each time that I get a letter from the jail, or I go to speak to an inmate, I remember that that once was me,” she says. “My family is proud of me. I am proud of me.”

DIXON – Phillip LeFevre looks at the streets to find out if a community is in tune with the arts. The Dixon native said he visits several cities that routinely draw weekend crowds. They have nice restaurants, beautiful downtowns and – supplementing all of it – street performers. “Weekends in Dixon are becoming pretty crowded,” LeFevre said. “I think Dixon is ready for it.” LeFevre is behind a new program called the Dixon Street Performer Project. Anyone can apply for free, and, if approved, they can schedule time slots to showcase their talents throughout the Petunia City’s downtown. LeFevre said the city gave him written permission to pursue the project, and he’s hoping to recruit a wide variety of performers – musician, magicians and more. Unless a performance involves fire (in which case, the performer would have to demonstrate in front of the Dixon Fire Department before approval), anyone can grab an application and be approved to perform. LeFevre is hoping to review applicants and slot performers for the Second Saturdays event June 13. Applications can be found at Dixon Paint Company, 313 W. First St. A self-described “arts encourager,” LeFevre

lives in Vermont, though he visits his hometown throughout the summer. He remembers when the downtown had less to show for itself culturally. That has changed, thanks to efforts like Main Street, The Next Picture Show, Second Saturdays, annual summer events, and local businesses that encourage art expressions. “Dixon has grown up in the arts,” LeFevre said. “I have been to several towns in which there are street performers at certain events. They add an element of artistic expression that does not currently exist in Dixon. I thought that this year would be a good chance for us to start something.” Thus far, he said word hasn’t spread to enough people, but he feels that once others hear of the project, local and outside talent will jump on the chance to liven up Dixon’s downtown. “There are so many local people,” LeFevre said. “So many talents. It shouldn’t be hard once we get the word out.” LeFevre’s group has blocked off four locations for performers: the corner of Peoria Avenue and First Street; the corner of Hennepin Avenue and First Street; the sidewalk along the Peoria Avenue parking lot; and the riverfront. DIXON – Superintendent Michael Juenger was at a loss Thursday night during a forum in the Dixon High School cafeteria. That’s where public schools staff and community members met to continue discussions on the future of Dixon High School. Some of them want to keep DHS where it is, while others want to see a new high school built. “This is our seventh community meeting, and I’m not sure what to report back to the school board,” Superintendent Michael Juenger said. “I don’t know that we are farther along.” Roughly 45 people spent more than 2 hours discussing the future of the districts’ buildings. The school board has narrowed the district’s long-range facility plan to two options, both of which include basic renovation and upgrades at Washington and Jefferson elementary schools, but differ when it comes to the high school. Option A includes renovating DHS; option B includes building a new high school. Representatives from different work groups made up of students, staff, teachers, and community members shared findings from their meetings. Alan Clemens, a member of the location committee, charged with recommending a location for the high school, read a statement put together by the group. “We are concerned there has been no attempt made to address issues regarding the flood plains upon which the renovated facility would sit,” the statement read in part. “Are engineering alternatives available that would reduce the incidence of regular, low-level
