STERLING – Every few years, Terry Powell combines his love of history, architecture, and building model aircraft into one art form: dioramas. The word “diorama” might bring back a few memories for you. Maybe you even made one during your school days. Powell, 81, has built three to date (among many other things, mostly model airplanes) and plans to build another. He sold the first two to local history museums, to curators much like himself, who are extremely interested in World War I and II aviation. Powell’s interest in aviation and building started a long time ago. After graduating from Sterling High School, he received a degree in architectural engineering from Bradley University in Peoria, and a master’s in industrial education from Western Illinois University in Macomb. Then he and a buddy bummed around Peoria, with no money and no plans – other than to make some cash playing pinball in the local bars. They made enough for food and beer for the month – but it was no long-term plan for life, so soon after, he enlisted in the Army. He passed his aviation test, but at that time there wasn’t a need for more pilots, so he was sent to an electronics school, then to a surveillance unit with the Army’s Special Forces.

Eventually he returned home and taught electronics at Sauk Valley Community College and, for 24 years, at Rock Falls High School. His knowledge of architecture and industrial education comes in handy when working on dioramas. Once inspiration strikes, he sketches his plans. His most recent, “1922 Midwest City July 4th Airshow,” features WWI planes and a variety of other historic details, meticulously rendered. He calls the diorama’s town square Powell Field. In it a man stands in front of the planes; he’s sort of the ring leader of the exhibition. At an exhibition back in the day, he would have been the one to get the crowd all worked up, sharing stories of the war, of the planes’ purposes, and of the heroic journeys they might have taken. There’s also a tiny cemetery, a barber shop, a hot dog vendor, and children flying kites held up in the air by tiny, thin wires. It’s truly a glimpse back in time. Powell finds the pieces he uses to build his dioramas from various vendors. He scours eBay daily, seeking out rare kits. Some antique kits he comes across wouldn’t have cost more than $5 when they were first produced, but today can command a much higher price because they are so rare. The landscaping, people, and buildings can be sourced from model

train kits. He isn’t quite sure how many hours this particular diorama has taken him over the 4 months of construction. He works on the piece for a while, then takes a break and reads a book. If he needs inspiration while working, he’ll get out and walk, or take a drive in his sporty Mini Cooper, or his Audi convertible. He sold his latest diorama to the Air Classics Museum of Aviation in Sugar Grove. He doesn’t have plans at the moment to relocate the “1922 Midwest City July 4th Airshow,” but thinks there is a good chance it will end up there, too. Powell plans to take a short break over the summer to do some travelling, and then it’s back at it. This time he plans to play around with elevation and might work up a western town set during the time of the gold rush.

The use of electronic cigarettes by high school students tripled from 2013-14 – a surprising boom that threatens to wipe out hard-won gains in the fight against teen smoking, a new government report says. The percentage of American high school students who smoked traditional cigarettes on a regular basis dropped from 15.8 percent in 2011 to 9.2 percent in 2014, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that drop has been more than offset by increases in e-cigarette use, which increased from 1.5 percent of high school students in 2011 to 13.4 percent in 2014, the study says. E-cigarettes are now the most popular tobacco product used by both high school and middle school students, the federal data show. As a result, overall tobacco use by high school students – includ-

ing the use of cigars, pipes, hookahs, bidis, snus and other smokeless tobacco – has remained essentially flat, with nearly 1 in 4 students using some kind of tobacco product. With their colorful designs and candy-store flavors, e-cigarettes – battery-powered devices that heat a nicotine solution into a vapor – seem perfectly designed to get kids and teens hooked on nicotine, many public health experts say. The Food and Drug Administration defines e-cigarettes as a tobacco product because they use nicotine. Some experts fear e-cigarettes are becoming a “gateway drug” that makes young people more inclined to try traditional cigarettes, cigars or other dangerous products. “They’re like cigarettes on training wheels,” said University of California, San Francisco, tobacco researcher Stanton Glantz. The new study, based on data from the National

Youth Tobacco Survey and released Thursday in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, doesn’t prove that hypothesis. But it isn’t exactly reassuring either. The CDC study backs up a Monitoring the Future report released in December by the University of Michigan, which found that twice as many eighth- and 10th-graders had used e-cigarettes in the previous month than had smoked traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes were also more popular among 12th-graders, 17 percent to 14 percent. The Michigan report was the first to show that e-cigarettes had become teens’ tobacco product of choice. Their appeal extends to students in middle schools, the new CDC study shows. In 2014, 3.9 percent of students in grades 6 through 8 were using e-cigarettes. That was well above the 2.5 percent rate for traditional cigarettes and for hookahs. Glantz said he was particularly troubled

because “the epidemic was building from the bottom up.” Unlike traditional smoking, a habit that has trickled down from adults to kids, e-cigarettes seem to be gaining the strongest foothold with the youngest users and expanding upward, he said. He added that psychology studies suggest that many kids who pick up e-cigarettes would never have tried traditional cigarettes. “This is explosive growth,” he said. “If we were talking about the spread of any other toxic

chemical it would be a public health crisis.” Michael Siegel, a professor of community health sciences at Boston University’s School of Public Health, said that public health advocates were drawing the wrong conclusion from the study. “The CDC should be celebrating that we’re seeing a decline in youth smoking,” he said. Estimates range from 3,000 to 5,000. On the Des Moines River, two low-head dams stand at either end of a half-mile stretch of the channel that runs through downtown Des Moines. At least 15 people have died at the Center Street Dam and the Scott Street Dam. Luther Aadland, a Minnesota river ecologist and leader in efforts to remove the dams, recalls witnessing a dog caught in the rush of water below a dam. “It was very disturbing,” he said. “I thought about jumping in to help, even though I knew it would have been certain death for me.” It’s unclear what’s behind the increased deaths in recent years, but Bruce Tschantz, a Knoxville, Tennessee, hydraulic engineer who has become an expert on the dams, believes it’s a combination of people spending more time on rivers and not understanding the power of the churning water. Making matters worse is the fact that many dams are poorly marked and lack lines or buoys for imperiled boaters or swimmers to grasp.

Many states will help finance the removal of dams, but it can cost $1 million or more. Community leaders also face the concerns of residents who fear that, without a dam, their riverfront homes will overlook nothing more than a muddy creek. Kevin Burns, mayor of Geneva, calls low-head dams the “third rail of a lot of river communities.” A half-dozen people have died in the past decade at Geneva’s low-head dam on the Fox River, including a kayaker last spring. But residents have resisted removing it, noting the structure, which helps provide a postcard-pretty backdrop for Geneva’s downtown, is clearly marked. In South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, officials rejected a proposal to remove a dam even though the state of Pennsylvania probably would have funded the demolition. “People like the aesthetic, the noise,” said board President Christina Morgan. Iowa helps subsidize the removal of four or five dams a year. But Des Moines officials are still wary of the expense and of possibly hurting recreation by lowering the river level. “It’s like they’re waiting for a bunch of deaths before they do anything,” said Julie Kunkle, who has pushed unsuccessfully for city action since her brother Steve Nourse died while trying to kayak through the Scott Street Dam during high water in 2002.

beef. Any type of steak can be used for this recipe. Many markets sell beef already cut into stir-fry pieces. This will save you a few minutes in the kitchen. Another time-saver: The rice is stir-fried in the same wok as the beef. The wok or skillet should be very hot, otherwise the ingredients will steam and not become crisp. After cooking the beef, donâ€™t rinse the wok; the rice will pick up the beef sauce flavor as it cooks. Fred Taskerâ€™s wine suggestions: A hot and spicy beef dish is actually easier to match than some of the subtler Chinese recipes. Up to about medium hotness, a fruity pinot noir or soft merlot would be a nice match. If the dish makes smoke curl from your ears, youâ€™d better go with cold beer. Helpful Hints: â€˘ Microwaveable rice is used. 1Â˝-cups rice is needed. Any remaining rice can be used for another dinner. â€˘ A small amount of tomato paste is used. Freeze extra for another use. Measure 1Â˝-cups and set aside. â€˘ Mix red pepper, soy sauce, sugar, tomato paste, chicken broth and cornstarch together and set aside. Remove visible fat from meat and cut into very thin strips about 2 inches long and Â˝-inch wide. Spray wok or skillet with vegetable oil spray and heat.
