Knee-deep in determination A Dixon Woman did more than just talk the talk, she walked the walk – walker, pain and all BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN

DIXON – A year removed from a terrifying fall, with a knee that makes more noise than some 1985 Yugos, 67-year-old Lynda Norton did something she’d never done before: run a 5K – with a walker. “I’d never [even] run a 1K,” she said. Her daughter, Dawn Lopez, was in town a couple of weeks ago and signed up online for the Dixon Family YMCA’s Shamrock Shuffle on March 12. Intent on surprising Lopez, Norton contacted the Y the Tuesday before to ask about the price and the terrain, then took the $25 plunge herself. The next night, she drove along the out-and-back course to scout it out. Her knees killing her – as tends to be the case as the weather changes – she was still having second thoughts that Saturday morning. She let Lopez fetch her packet to save a few steps, parked in the Y’s lot to save a few more, and even though walkers are encouraged to start toward the back of the pack, on her daughter’s advice she sauntered to the front to save yet a few more. Then, armed with the mantra, “If God brings you to it, he’s going to get you through it,” and with wounded local veterans such as Adam Devine, Michael Shoemaker, Matt

Beard and her ex-husband, Clarence Eugene Norton, all on her mind, she set forth. “If they can do it, that shows us we have to do something,” Norton said “If you don’t get moving, if you give up, it’s never going to happen.”

A crushing break On Dec. 12, 2014, Norton fell on the deck at her boyfriend’s house as she went out to fetch the Telegraph. “It’s the Telegraph’s fault,” joked Gary DeBord, her partner and buddy, as she calls him. What played out was no joke. It had been about 18 years since she’d had her cartilage-devoid knees replaced with artificial ones. Her right knee had been buckling of late, and that morning, she slipped on black ice, broke her femur and crushed her knee. Paramedics radioed for help, knowing the break was so close to the artery that if not properly handled, the aftermath of the fall could be fatal. “They literally carried my leg behind me,” Norton said. She was sent to Rockford, where she underwent two major surgeries. A hinge was installed in her right knee – a knee that creaks and cracks and crunches without explanation. She spent nearly a year in a nursing home in Sterling, where insurance issues put responsibility for her bills in question and ruled out physical therapy. She gave the professionals their due, not putting weight on the knee for 16 weeks. Just getting out of bed was a battle, but she

conducted her own therapy, recalling her method after the replacement surgeries in the mid-’90s. “I would push, and my mind would tell my body to do it, but the body said, ‘No,’” Norton said. “I kept pushing and pushing until I got where I could move it.” As the ongoing legal battle waged on and the day she’d be unable to afford more care approached, she reminded herself of one thing: “If I’m going to come home, I’ve got to be walking.”

‘I’ll be right behind you, all the way’ Whether she realized it at the time, when Norton turned to tell the race’s near-idling motorcycle rider that he could pass her at any time, his response nicely summed up how her first 5K would play out. “He said, ‘I’ll be right behind you all the way,’” Norton said. “I warned him it might be a long day.” Runners, friends and strangers alike, who’d halfcircled the turnaround point, stopped on their way back to offer encouragement. She probably worked harder than some of the kids who ran the 5-minute miles at the front.” The race kicked off the Y’s Strong Kids, Strong Communities campaign, which hit its fundraising goal last year, and aims for $92,000 this year. Proceeds fund youth and senior programs. To think, Norton’s journey began with a commitment to walking again and, even more importantly? “I wanna get back to my line-dancing!” Norton yelled.

Just keep walking. Look at Adam Devine. Look at this guy. Look at that one. They don’t have legs, and they got through it.’ “I told my daughter what I was singing, and she said, ‘Are you nuts? You should’ve been singing ‘Crazy,’ for signing up.’” They came by a portapotty, but Norton was too weak to access it. “I could just see myself falling headfirst into a toilet,” Norton said. “I started laughing, and I said to my daughter, ‘They need a handicap porta-potty.’ She said, ‘On a racetrack?’” The volunteer trailing her, one of several who provided a convoy to the finish line, said he’d relay the memo. Those volunteers urged her to give her best elbowelbow-wrist-wrist, royal wave as she approached the finish line. Not quite 90 minutes after leaving the starting line, she saw it once again, and she

Beef up your brain with exercise Westwood uses previous weight loss challenge’s success as springboard to summer fun

ow that 67-yearold Dixonite Lynda Norton did a 5K using a walker, we’re all out of excuses. All that’s left are reasons to go for it, whatever it might be. Odds are, it will improve your life across the board. With so many uncontrollable factors impacting kids’ education, fitness is often overlooked. The terrifying spike in childhood obesity in recent years should be enough to scare us into action, but better yet, there are myriad studies showing that fitness is directly related to performance in the classroom. Fit bodies mean fit brains, and that means more focus, energy, and a more positive self-image. When you think of fitness, do you think about the intensity of CrossFit, the masochism of marathoners, or the shaming that gyms so often pour into ads, targeting people who don’t commit to TRANSFORMING THEMSELVES TODAY?! Ugh. It doesn’t have to be that over-thetop. If you’d like to feel better, do better and be better, you can start small. At 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Sterling Park District will celebrate National Walking Day with a 30-minute walk through the trails behind Westwood Fitness & Sports Complex. Getting a vote of confidence Board gives embezzler a second chance; recommends hiring her for management job

POLO – The Polo Park Board believes in second chances. A woman who embezzled nearly $60,000 over 4 years from First State Bank Shannon-Polo, where she was a vice president, is up for her second year as manager of Polo City Pool, a position that involves handling around $20,000 in revenue. Kayla C. Bergstrom, 46, faces up to 30 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $1 million and up to 5 years of supervised release at her sentencing June 28 in federal court in Rockford. She is free on her own recognizance,

and has repaid the bank. Despite that, the Polo Park Board – Chairman Larry Loomis, Shelley Bolens, Sydney Frano, Ben Katner, Jamie Gorzny, Mark Scholl and Tom Suits – voted 6-1 on March 23 to recommend the City Council rehire her, Loomis said Thursday. “She did an excellent job for us – her and the whole staff,” Loomis said. “We kind of feel as though it’s one of those things where people who have done things, they deserve a second chance.” Suits, Polo’s city attorney, agreed with Loomis on Bergstrom’s job performance – “she did do an excellent job,” he said Thursday – but didn’t

see things the same way when it came to second chances. He cast the lone no vote. “I vote my conscience, the other members vote their consciences, and the majority rules,” he said, declining further explanation. There is no city ordinance prohibiting the hiring of a felon, and Suits did not know if knowingly hiring a felon would invalidate insurance coverage should a crime result. “That’s something we’ll have to look into,” he said. Last season was Bergstrom’s first as manager of Polo Community Pool, 303 W. Webster St. She was paid $14,000. The job lasts about

4 months – from sometime in April, getting the outdoor pool ready for the season, until around Labor Day, when school starts and it closes for the year. The board did have a full discussion of Bergstrom’s situation, including the fact that she faces a possible prison term, Loomis said. He could not recall if anyone else had expressed an interest in the job, but did say it was a the kind of position that sometimes is hard to fill. Loomis noted that the board is merely offering its recommendation: The final decision rests with the City Council, which actually does the hiring.

OREGON – An 80-yearold Oregon woman was killed Wednesday after her car failed to stop at the intersection of Gale/ state Route 2 and South Fourth streets and was hit by a semitrailer, Oregon Police said in a news release. Mary Barclay was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:25 p.m. Barclay was northbound on South Fourth Street when she pulled out in front of the semi driven by Ronald Buttel, 68, of Byron, who

was eastbound. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and no charges are pending, the release said. Barclay had worked at Progressive Graphics and Dawson Subscription Services, and with local elementary schools through the Foster Grandparent program. Her visitation begins at 9 a.m. and funeral Mass at 11 Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon. Farrell-HollandGale Funeral Home in Oregon is handling arrangements.

An Oregon woman was killed Wednesday after her car was hit by a semitrailer.

DIXON – A Dixon woman charged with drug-induced homicide in the death of a 22-year-old pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Lee County Court. Heather A. Wilcox, 32, faces 6 to 30 years in prison. She is one of two women charged in the death of Felicia Halstead of Dixon, who overdosed and died Nov. 11 after her first time using heroin, police have said. Wilcox also is charged with delivery of a controlled substance (less than 1 gram of heroin), punishable by 3 to 7 years; and possession of a controlled substance

(less than 15 grams of heroin), punishable by 1 to 3 years. Wilcox is Heather A. free on a Wilcox $100,000 recognizance bond. Her next hearing is April 28. According to Lee County Court records, Wilcox was sentenced to 2 years’ probation for possession of a controlled substance in July 2013. Rebecca S. Dixon, 35, still was in Lee County Jail Wednesday on $100,000 bond; she is charged with the same three felonies and also has pleaded not guilty.

Serve chowder as a meal or side dish Roasted red peppers give this colorful soup its sweet and smoky taste BY SUSAN SELASKY Tribune News Service

Sometimes a bowl of soup, with some crusty bread, can suffice as dinner. Just about any variety of soup can be comforting, warm and filled with hearty ingredients. Todayâ€™s chowder recipe falls into the general soup category and does all of that and then some. Whatâ€™s best about this chowder is its sweet and smoky taste, all from the roasted red peppers. It also gets a bit of heat from cayenne pepper, which is optional and gets cooled off with the milk or cream. Besides taste, another bonus is that itâ€™s a beautiful chowder with deep flavors that will impress guests. How does chowder differ from a soup? A chowder is classified as any kind of thick soup that has chunks of food in it. Those chunks can be vegetables, seafood or meat. Most chowders are

cream- or milk-based, which also gives them body and a slight thickness. Raw cubed potato is used in many chowders as an ingredient, but also because its starch provides thickening. For best results, use russet potatoes because they wonâ€™t have that crumbly texture like a baking potato does once itâ€™s cooked. Itâ€™s that chunky texture of a chowder that sets it apart from, say, a smooth bisque. Roasted red peppers are at the heart of this chowder. Once the peppers are roasted, their sweetness is more pronounced. They also take on charred, smoky flavor, which adds a boost to any dish. In this recipe, the pepper pieces get that charred effect in the pot. But if you are in a pinch, substitute a 12-ounce jar of roasted red peppers found in the condiment aisle. If you do use jarred roasted peppers, drain them well and pat with paper towels. With jarred peppers, skip

the charring step in this recipe and add them to the pot once the onions are tender and browned. One easy way to jazz this chowder up is to top it with seafood. Cooked lobster meat is terrific, fancy and something to swoon over. No lobster? Try cooked shrimp â€“ whole or cut into pieces. Sweet Roasted Red Pepper Chowder Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Total time: 40 minutes You can substitute a 12-ounce jar of roasted red peppers; drain before using. Add the peppers once the onions are browned. Nonstick cooking spray or 2 tablespoons canola oil 1 pound red sweet peppers, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (about 3 cups) 2 cups chopped sweet onions (about 1 jumbo) 1 large russet or Yukon

gold potato (10 ounces), peeled and cubed 1 cup vegetable broth 1 1/2 cups 1 percent milk or half-and-half 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or to taste 1 tablespoon butter Salt and pepper to taste Croutons for garnish or a crusty baguette for serving 1/2 cup shredded (2 ounces) white sharp cheddar cheese, optional 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley Coat a 4-quart saucepan or Dutch oven with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium-high heat. Add the peppers and give them a few mists of cooking spray. Cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until charred, stirring frequently. If you donâ€™t have cooking spray, heat the canola oil, once hot, add the peppers and cook as
