DIXON – Back and forth went Rebekah Zeigler and Lydia Cermak, the final spellers left Thursday in the Lee/Ogle Regional Spelling Bee after 24 others were eliminated. Finally, Cermak, a sixth-grader at Oregon Elementary School, was tripped up by the word tuckahoe. Zeigler, a fourth-grader at Centennial Elementary School in Polo, responded quickly by correctly spelling lederhosen. After 28 rounds, victory, and a trip to the national bee, was within Ziegler’s reach. All that stood in the way was spelling one final word correctly. The word she was given? Borzoi, a large Russian wolfhound. Zeigler confidently stepped to the microphone in the packed auditorium of Dixon High School, and correctly spelled the word. “I feel really good about winning,” Zeigler said with a wide smile. “My mom and dad helped me a lot.” Zeigler had served notice last year as a third-grader, the youngest grade eligible in the bee, by finishing 10th. By winning this year, Zeigler, the 9-year-old daughter of Mark and Alissa Zeigler, receives an all-expenses-paid trip for two to National Harbor, Maryland, just south of Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee that begins May 24 and concludes May 29. She also won a $100 U.S. savings bond, a Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, and an online subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica. Statistics suggest Zeigler’s win should come as no surprise. Thirteen of the past 16 winners in the Lee/ Ogle contest were girls. Nationally, since the competition started in 1983, 53 percent of bee contestants have been female.

Also, of the past champions, 78 percent had participated in the Lee/Ogle bee in previous years. Finally, eight of the past nine champions have come from Ogle County. For finishing in second place, Cermak will receive a Kindle Paperwhite and a MerriamWebster’s Collegiate Dictionary. Maddy Jacobs, an eighth-grader from St. Anne School in Dixon, finished third. She bowed out when she misspelled angstrom. She received a $40 gift certificate from Books on First in Dixon. Zeigler said she constantly visited spellingbee.com, the Scripps National site, for help with pronouncing the words. When she grows up, Zeigler said, she wants to be a nurse, but she also wants to be an author in her spare time. Younger students like Zeigler might not be able to compete in the
bee next year, when students from Whiteside County join those in Lee and Ogle in the competition. Details of the combined bee next year still are being worked out, said Paul McMahon, the regional superintendent of the Lee Ogle Regional Office of Education. But the number of competitors might preclude third- and fourthgraders from participating. “If we bring the younger kids on, there may be 70 contestants on the stage,� McMahon said. He did say that Zeigler’s win, and strong finish as a third-grader, might force the continued inclusion of younger students. McMahon said next year’s bee might consist of a semifinal round or a preliminary round to accommodate the additional students. “We want to give all the kids a chance,� McMahon said. “The winner can come from anywhere.�

Speech team advances to state STERLING – Clarissa Worcester says speech team and sports are different animals. “It’s not like a sport, where you run in this amount of time or you put a ball into a hoop,� said Worcester, a senior at Sterling High School. “You have to make people like you, and you have to make people think you deserve a spot because everything is judged.� Twelve SHS students qualified for the Illinois High School State Speech Competition, which will take place this morning and Saturday in downstate Peoria. “I’m thrilled for these students,� their coach, Jill Price, said. “They have worked together as a family, and they have worked over and over to make their pieces better.� To reach state, the team had to advance through the regional and sectional rounds. There are 15 different events available in the state competition. “There are anywhere from acting events to speaking events, where the students write their own speeches,� Price said. “The students can win individually, and their points will contribute to the overall team’s total. So, how you compete individually gives points to your team.� Worcester will participate in two events: dramatic interpretation and humorous interpretation. “I’m still in a state of shock, because this means convincing a lot of people that you deserve to be there,� Worcester said. “This is what you work for all season. It’s a culmination of every-

Resthave to Memory care unit clears hire about 20 zoning hurdles MORRISON – With new space comes new jobs. That’s the case at Resthave Nursing and Retirement Home, anyway. With the completion of its new skilled nursing wing, and as construction on an assisted living wing wraps up, the nursing home is expected to bring on about 20 new employees. Tami Tegeler, executive director of the nonprofit agency, said the hiring will be in nursing and other departments. “Basically we’ll be hiring part time, if not full time, across every department,” she said. The 2-year, $8 million expansion of the property at 408 Maple Ave. is nearly complete. Last week, residents were able to move into the new skilled nursing

The first of three phases in the project was a 20-room assisted living wing, completed in November 2013. The final phase will be more assisted living suites and a new chapel, which is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

STERLING – The Plan Commission approved a petition to amend a special use permit for a senior living center’s expansion project. The council, at its Jan. 5 meeting, had sent the petition from CLP Sterling IL back to the commission. The new construction is for a memory care unit at Good Neighbor Care, 2705 Ave. E. The commissioners agreed to expand the existing R-3 special use designation. If the recommendation is approved by the council, the property line setbacks will be adjusted to accommodate the addition behind the existing two-story building. The builders had previously been given special use designation for the north property line. City code requires a 40-foot setback for the facility’s zoning classification. It can be modified by requesting a Planned
United Development modification, which was approved. The expansion could not happen at that location without the modifications, because the lot is too small for the project to stay within the city code’s current setback parameters. Architect Joe Zody represented his clients at the public hearing. “The last time I was here, we took care of the north-line encroachment problem, but we later discovered a 1.8foot encroachment on the rear line as well,” Zody said. “I request that we move the rear setback from 30 to 20 feet.” Zody also requested a setback for the south line to keep it in sync with the north side. Some extra space was requested behind of the building to accommodate a fenced outdoor area to be used by the assisted living and memory care residents. City Planning Consultant Dustin Wolff told

ROCK FALLS – A Rock Falls man is charged with sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl. Whiteside County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Edson J. Lira, 37, on Friday in the 1400 block of East 14th Street in Rock Falls. He posted $20,000 of his $200,000 bond and was released from Whiteside

County Jail on Tuesday. According to court documents, the girl was abused on Feb. 8. Lira is charged with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, which carries up to 30 years in prison, and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which carries up to 7 years. He is set for a pretrial conference on March 11.

For the author’s 18-month-old twin girls, he finds that once the edges get a little brown, that’s prime time to pull the pizza monsters. BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN
I am not a cook. In the Heimerman household, that title is reserved for my wife. But as a grizzled journalist, I do consider myself crafty. Maybe even cagey. And I need to be in order to get my toddlers to eat well every day. They recently went through one of those signature picky phases that fellow parents love to commiserate about. Between winter bugs and teething, we built up about a thousand tricks to get them to eat. Chop it small. Leave it whole. Feed them on your lap. Put the food directly on their tray. Let them eat it with your fork. Let them graze. Purée everything. Pray. Offer them money from your wallet. Oh, and perhaps the hardest trick: Be patient. On any given day, one or many of these tricks will work. And when Kayla returned to the workforce in December, I quickly added a few arrows to my quiver to retain my selfproclaimed Superdad title. One of my biggest breakthroughs was a fond memory of my youth. Every household had a different name for them. My buddy, Dupey, from the other side of the block? He called them pizza toasties. In our house, they were pizza quicks. I didn’t dare question the nickname my older brothers came up with. I took enough beatings without asking for one more. For the girls, I make pizza monsters. In other words, I make a face with the ingredients; in this case, olives. I don’t know how much they get from it at this stage, but it keeps me young. Pretty simple, quick (about 10 minutes total) concept – hence, why I can pull it off, say, once a week. And that right there might be the best trick I have: Don’t beat a dish to death. Toddlers like novelty. So I try to give them a variety of dishes, and incorporate different ingredients into somewhat boilerplate dishes. Not only does it keep things interesting, but it also keeps them trying new things every day. I look forward to the day my kiddo-pods can tell me, “Daddy, I want pepperoni on mine!” or “I want gummy bears!” Wait ... OK, maybe I’m perfectly cool with them not talking much for the time being. But when that day comes, it’ll be fun to let them decide what goes on their pizza monsters. But for now, they love olives. And as long as we don’t have to resort to gummy bears tomorrow, I’m happy. As their palates and my culinary chops develop, I hope to help you out of as many jams as one dad can. Godspeed!
Toppings of your (or your kiddos’) choice Preheat your oven’s broiler. By the time your monsters are ready, it should be at or close to 500 degrees. Toast two slices of bread, but not too dark. Remember, they’ll spend 5 minutes under the broiler, too. Butter the bread from crust to crust. Same with the sauce: spread it from crust to crust. Sprinkle on cheese thoroughly. Cover those slices, to make these monsters nice and gooey. Add toppings, ideally in the likeness of a face. Place in the oven for about 5 minutes, until the edges of the cheese get golden brown. Remove from the oven and either serve whole-slice, or cut into stripes or bite sizes, depending on your toddlers’ preference.
ABOVE: Just because we’re making a dish for toddlers, doesn’t mean we don’t mind our mise en place. In fact, it might be even more important: Don’t want to be inefficient while the natives get restless.

It requires vitamins and minerals. It also requires water. Nutrient density is a term used to define and compare foods in terms of their value in nourishing your body. More nutrient-dense foods contain more fiber, vitamins, and minerals per calorie than other less nutritious foods. Nutrient-dense foods include many vegetables, fruits, nuts/seeds, beans, lean proteins, and whole grains. Many nutrition experts have compiled lists of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet– so-called super foods. The lists vary to some degree, but foods that commonly appear include salmon, kale, sweet potatoes, and blueberries. The term empty calories refers to foods that do not contain much nutrition. Such foods are both high in added sugars and unhealthy fats, and low in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Eating too many of those types of food can contribute not only to extra pounds, but to adverse health conditions such as a poor immune system and neurological conditions. According to the USDA the foods and beverages that provide the most empty calories in the American diet are: • Cakes, cookies, pastries, and doughnuts (contain both solid fat and added sugars) • Sodas, energy drinks, sports drinks, and fruit drinks (contain added sugars) • Cheese (contains solid fat) • Pizza (contains solid fat) • Ice cream (contains both solid fat and added sugars) • Sausages, hot dogs, bacon, and ribs (contain solid fat) Some foods can be both nutrient-dense and calorie-dense. These include nuts and nut butters, dried fruit, and avocados. Such foods are great to include in our diets, as long as we watch our portion sizes. Researchers are constantly discovering new information about the link between our health and nutrients contained in foods. Many are coming to the conclusion that most of the diseases that we see, including heart disease and cancer, are linked to our diets. So don’t be empty-headed when deciding what to eat. Choose whole, fresh, highly nutritious foods as often as possible. After all, it’s good to be dense, if it means you are selecting foods that will keep you healthy.

Cashing in wagers for boat docks? They could be funded by gambling revenue, placed near Heritage Crossing BY MATT MENCARINI
DIXON – The city could be getting closer to boat docks along the riverfront. Last week, Mayor Jim Burke said he has had discussions with several council members about using some of the city’s revenue from video gambling to pay for them. The boat docks have been discussed for several years and been a priority of the Riverfront Commission. They are seen as a way to make the Rock River a bigger part of the city’s downtown. video gambling became legal in 2012. Riverfront Commission Chairman Larry Reed
said in a memorandum to the City Council that the estimated cost of the boat docks was $195,000. The commission, according to the memorandum, has raised $10,288 specifically for the boat docks and has a $32,039 balance in its general fund. The memorandum lists the costs of the boat docks, the project’s needs, when they can be installed, and the city’s responsibilities, among other information. Reed said he wanted the memorandum to be detailed so there weren’t any surprises and the council knew all relevant information.
“The bottom line is we’re looking for a funding source, which is a key issue,” he said. The proposed boat docks would be on the south side of the Rock River, near Heritage Crossing. Starting in the water near the east side of the Peoria Avenue bridge and continuing to the east, the docks could fit nine boats parked, and as many to 13, Reed said, if tour boats were loading or unloading passengers. The docks will be permitted as temporary, Reed said, so they can be removed, moved, reduced or expanded. Kayak and canoe por-
tage locations also have been considered, but their cost – about $75,000 according to Reed – means that they’ll likely have to wait. The boat dock plans include launch slots for kayaks and canoes. Burke mentioned the possibility of portage locations being included in the River Street streetscape planning, which will likely take place this year. The council recently set up a task force and named members for that purpose.

Westwood building to be resurrected Anonymous donor gives $600K to job BY PAM EGGEMEIER
STERLING – If all goes according to plan, the Westwood Fitness and Sports Center will again have three buildings open for public use. Paul Zepezauer, director of recreation for the Sterling Park District, this week presented bid information to the park board to launch a renovation project at Westwood’s Building 2. “Last Thursday, two bids came back on work
for the roof and side panels on Building 2,” Zepezauer told the board. “We have three different alternatives, so we recommend awarding the bid to Phalen Steel, contingent on further research on the alternatives.” The board approved the low bid of $540,542 from Mendota-based Phalen, which also put up Building 3, to do the first phase of this project. None of the alternatives regarding the roof and windows would push the cost beyond the approved bid price. The total cost of bringing the late 1970s building back to life is estimated at $1.1 million, Park District Executive Director Larry Schuldt said. The first phase would be the most
costly part of the project because it involves stripping the roof and side walls to the iron support structure and basically rebuilding it. Money is in hand for the first phase, thanks to a $600,000 donation received in December from an anonymous benefactor. The rest of the financing is a work in progress. “We’re hoping to get additional donations for the rest of the project,” Schuldt said. “We don’t anticipate using any tax dollars for this.” Buildings 1 and 2 were privately owned for many years before being brought into the park district. Building 1 is the main fitness building, housing track, ten-
nis, racquetball, workout equipment, football, soccer and wrestling. That building was acquired by the park district in 1980. Another anonymous donor brought Building 3 into the mix in 2002. It was built to house eight courts for basketball and volleyball leagues. Track meets, indoor soccer, indoor flag football, trade shows, expositions and meetings are also held there. Building 2 became park district property in 1991. The building had four tennis courts and no restrooms or locker rooms. “It was operated just for tennis for several years,” Schuldt said. “But in the mid-’90s, interest in tennis waned, and we didn’t need the extra four
courts. We then used it primarily for youth programs.” The building was also used for basketball and volleyball, but then the decision to close it was made in 2010. “The building was never very popular, but it was closed mainly because the roof was leaking pretty badly,” Schuldt said. “Because we had Building 3, we couldn’t justify the expense of fixing the roof.” The roof problems eventually ruined the insulation, and now it makes more financial sense to put up new insulated wall panels. Building 2, near the outdoor tennis courts, became a large storage garage for staff, but last
summer the need arose for more court space. Permanent turf was put in the track building, which pushed the basketball and volleyball activities from the main building. “With the elimination of those courts, the idea of renovating Building 2 became more interesting,” Schuldt said. Schuldt said he was 95 percent sure that the park district would move ahead with the project, but the timeline isn’t etched in stone. Officials hope the first phase can start in April and be completed in July. Three subsequent phases would include restrooms, heating, lighting, sidewalks and ramps.
