DIXON – Greer Bond is a sweet, cheerful 2-year-old. To look at her, you’d never know she has leukemia. “Last spring, around Easter, we started noticing little things, such as random fevers,” said Courtney Bond, 30, Greer’s mother. “We also noticed bruising on her stomach and face.” On April 20, Greer was diagnosed with Philadelphia Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or Ph+ ALL. After several rounds of chemotherapy, doctors concluded that her best chance to grow up with her family is a bone marrow transplant. Fortunately for her, a match was found last week, and surgery is scheduled for March 23. In honor of Greer, and thousands of other patients who need a transplant, the Bond family is sponsoring a donor registration drive Tuesday at KSB Hospital. To join the National Bone Marrow Registry, donors ages 18 to 60 give a simple cheek swab, which is used to determine

their tissue type. “We know many people personally that need a transplant who are looking,” Bond said. “We reached out to the American Red Cross to help us host the donor drive.” She and her husband Kel, both 2003 Dixon High School grads, have another daughter, 5-year-old Harlow, and are expecting a baby boy in May. The family and the Red Cross also held a registration drive Thursday at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, and 119 people signed up. “We had no idea what to expect at CGH,” said Jan Woodward, Courtney’s mother. “We were overwhelmed with the amount of people who signed up to register.” Greer will be spending the next 4 months at a Chicago hospital undergoing “one last intense round of chemotherapy to try to get the leukemia out of the bone marrow,” Bond said. “This is a difficult time for her, and everyone,” Woodward said.

Lifescape throws a lifeline Agency will offer senior services that were the casualty of budget battle BY PAM EGGEMEIER

A Rockford-based nonprofit agency will provide services for seniors that Lutheran Social Services recently announced it no longer would offer in the area. The Illinois Department on Aging said Lifescape Community Services Inc., the largest nonprofit senior services provider in northwest Illinois, is putting together plans to add Whiteside and Carroll counties to its service area. Lifescape already has a presence in Lee County, providing meals for seniors at sites in Dixon, Amboy, and Paw Paw. LSSI had provided case management services for 2,393 elderly clients, and adult protective services for 320 seniors through its Sterling office. Lifescape will take over contracts for those services through the community

care program, which helps seniors live independently longer, and protective services that are set up to prevent elder abuse and do crisis intervention. “The state approached us about assuming those two contracts, and we have worked with LSSI a lot and have a good relationship with them,” said Mike Hughes, Lifescape CEO and executive director. Hughes said LSSI has until Feb. 29 to phase out the programs it will no longer offer in the area, and Lifescape’s contracts begin March 1. “Things have happened very quickly, so we’re still trying to work out all of the details,” Hughes said. Hughes has been in the CEO’s office only since Jan. 1, taking over from Carolyn Green, who retired after 21 years with the agency. Hughes was promoted from chief operating officer at Lifescape. Some of the details to be worked out involve the logistics of operating in two new counties. “There are a lot of questions as to where exactly our footprint will be in the new areas, but we are now in nego-

tiations to perhaps rent some of the space at the Sterling office from LSSI,” Hughes said. He wants the Lifescape senior services to be provided as seamlessly as possible in the Sauk Valley, he said. “We have a lot of respect for the work LSSI has done, and we hope that the only noticeable difference is in the name.” Lifescape already provides senior services in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, and Lee counties. Its array of services includes providing meals, general senior assistance, and adult day care services. LSSI also cut its community-based counseling in the area. Some of those services targeted youth, while others were broad-based adult services. The state’s largest social services provider announced Jan. 22 that it was cutting 750 workers, representing 43 percent of its staff, and cutting services to 4,700 clients. LSSI attributed 90 percent of the cuts to an interruption in state funding because of the budget impasse in

Springfield. The state now owes the agency more than $6.5 million since July 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year. Services were to be phased out in 30 days, and case files were given to the Illinois Department on Aging, which oversees the state’s community care programs. LSSI said Wednesday that the Sauk Valley programs no longer are in its jurisdiction. “The senior programs have gone back to the oversight of the Department on Aging, and it’s now out of our hands,” LSSI spokeswoman Barb Hailey said. LSSI consulted with the state on a needs assessment before officially turning over the case files. State funding is mandated by the courts in the area of foster care, so LSSI is still running the Choices house program in Nachusa. Choices is a residential substance abuse treatment program for youth ages 12 to 18. A 3-bed youth emergency shelter in Nachusa, however, will be closed.

Fortunately, the field of preventive medicine is growing in popularity and there are pioneers like T. Colin Campbell, Caldwell Esselstyn, and Dean Ornish, to name a few, who have done serious research into human nutrition and disease prevention. Still,

STERLING – With one word, Emiliano Martinez declared Male Interaction Week in the Head Start program at Wallace School a success. “He felt comfortable,” the 5-year-old said about Nero, a German shepherd K-9 officer with the Rock Falls Police Department. Comfortable is exactly how the federally funded program wants its kids to feel around men who fill positive roles in the community. “Sometimes, our kids don’t have positive role models in their lives,” said Carisa Valdez, a family community service worker with the program. Accompanied by his partner of 6 months, patrolman Scott Allspaugh, Nero responded to a series of German commands, then showed students how he sniffs out drugs. Allspaugh rewarded him with his favorite toy, a tennis ball, then asked the kids if any of them were afraid of dogs. Da’Marcus Wallace’s hand shot up. Minutes later, he was a converted dog-lover. “He was licking my hand,” the 4-year-old shrieked with glee. It isn’t lost on Allspaugh that kids might be intimidated by both him and his partner. “It’s really nice than I can be here and knock two things out at once,” he said. “Police officers are good, and not something to be scared of. We’re here to help them, and the dog is here to help me and them.” Nero’s affable personality allows him to do demonstrations just about anywhere, for a crowd of any ages, Allspaugh said. They even go to nursing homes. But there’s nothing quite like kids approaching him Quality Post Frame Buildings

and telling them they want to be a police officer when they grow up. “It’s exciting to think about that. It’s nice to think I might have that effect on them just by bringing Nero into the gym and letting them experience being around us firsthand.” A retired correctional officer, a Marine Corps recruiter and a National Guard member from Rock Falls also came to talk with the kids. Today, they’ll prepare for the return to normalcy. With no classes on Fridays, lead teacher Kaley Behrens and her assistants will be weaving education into their play-based activities with the preschoolers. “That’s when we tackle the sneaking in of learning,” Behrens said, “We have to be really sneaky, and ask a lot of open-ended questions whenever they show you something.” What the program has given her is validation. She knows she could make more money working in public schools, but she cherishes being part of a free program that fulfills health care requirements – the kids got their blood pressure taken before meeting Nero. The program also offers transportation for health care, if families don’t have the means. Head Start is designed for children from low-income families, although, in addition to federally determined income thresholds, other factors such as disability can be taken into account in determining eligibility. It’s Emiliano’s second year in the program, and he didn’t speak a word of English upon arrival. In the Head Start Program, education is a twoway street. “It’s a learning experience for us,” assistant teacher Elise Ulferts-Hume said. “I’ve never known so much Spanish. He’s very patient with us.” “It’s rewarding knowing he feels comfortable in here,” Behrens added. “I know un poquito Español, so we’re both learning at the same time.”

Strip the rosemary leaves into a mortar and pestle; add the garlic and pound into a paste with a pinch of sea salt. Muddle in 1 tablespoon oil, the paprika, saffron and a swig of boiling water to make a marinade. Cut one orange into wedges (leaving the skin on), toss with the shrimp and the marinade; allow to rest, 10 minutes. 2. Put the couscous into a bowl; add boiling water just until covered. Pop a plate on top and leave to fluff up, about 5 minutes.

Heat the corn tortillas (I do this by toasting them in a dry nonstick pan on both sides or on my flat top griddle). 5. Spoon some of the cilantro-radish salad onto the tortillas. Top with a generous amount of the lobster and then drizzle with the green onion sauce. Serve immediately with avocado slices and lime wedges. Basic Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
