The sounds that Cody Lund coaxes out his strings has touched his teacher, helped him understand music’s deeper meaning – and lead him to cross country running and Clinton and Jackson counties in Iowa. Lund edged out another Sterling student, freshman cellist Liam Estes. Despite the fact that he’s been concertmaster of the Sterling High orchestra for 4 years and twice made the All-State Orchestra, Lund said performing the solo during the Feb. 27 winter concert in the Morrison High School auditorium will be unlike anything he’s done. “When I heard I’d won, initially, I was scared for the concert,” he said. “I’ve never played by myself in front of that many people.” But before stepping out to perform “Romance No. 2 in F Major, Op. 50” by Ludwig van Beethoven, he’ll have great company – including Lauff, who also plays in the orchestra’s violin section. She had a starkly different reaction to the good news.

STERLING – Little did Cody Lund know that the proverbial intersection he reached in the summer of 2009 was along a road leading to a deeper understanding and love of life. Entering his sixth-grade year at Challand Middle School, his orchestra teacher, Barb Lauff, persuaded him to run the Music in Motion 5K, at which he was slated to play violin. It led him to cross country, one of his greatest passions and one that perfectly complements another: music. The Sterling High School senior and Illinois State Scholar recently emerged victorious from the 20016 Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist auditions, held for students in Whiteside and Carroll counties in Illinois

“I was in tears, because this was something he had really wanted,” she said. “This is years in the making, starting in fifth grade, for him to be on that stage now. It’s that time when you’re tired at night after doing your biology homework, but you get out your violin and practice.” And when you arrive at school early and stay late to work with your teacher, as Lund often did with Lauff. “We developed a really good relationship, and she’s been a very positive influence on me,” he said. “That’s the best gift you can get as a teacher – for your student to share their gift of music in the same venue,” Lauff said. “What more reward can you have than a student who wants to be here, after hours, with you working on their instrument?” LUND CONTINUED ON 2

His teachers, including his high school director, Erik Oberg, and private teacher, Robert Whipple – also the Clinton orchestra’s executive director – marvel at how Lund has been able to grow in his craft, to find deeper meaning in performance. “He does a lot of that himself,” Whipple said. “He has a very wide range of interests and experiences, and it’s important for the student to relate the piece to life experiences.” “He helped get me past just looking at the notes, and to understand the deeper meaning of the work,” Lund said. “When you play the higher-level stuff – the Beethovens, the Bachs, and the Mahlers – you understand that these people wrote with a purpose, rather than just writing music. When you have that connection, you perform so much better.

That’s really the key to becoming a higher-level musician. “You have to channel the history of the piece through your playing.” He admits it’s a form of theater, which he’s thrived in despite having no experience in theater. He also said he’s not necessarily a romantic, adding to the degree of difficulty. “I don’t think I’m a romantic … so that’s a challenge, to bring out my romantic side, I guess,” Lund said. “It’s kind of acting. You have to put on a performance.” Lauff gets misty when she describes her kinship with Lund, and said his parents, Richard and Marla Lund, are welldeserving of a standing ovation. “If I had a child, I would want them to be just like Cody,” she said. “He’s very special to me.” She hasn’t had another student who has so firmly embraced the journey of both music and running, and who has been so affected by their relation-

They’re now who he is, and that makes him unique to me. There aren’t many people on this boat with us.” She doesn’t expect all of her gifted students to want to be teachers. But if

they simply realize music and running are both passions sustainable for the duration of a lifetime, if a youngster simply recognizes a symphony in a movie’s score, that’s validating. “I want them to feel the way I feel when I’m running and when I’m performing on my instrument,” Lauff said. “It’s sustainable satisfaction that comes from

the immense hours and patience it takes in practicing and running. Nothing is more exposed than playing music and running – it’s all you.” For Lund, both activities have fostered an appreciation for the moment and the importance of drinking it in deep. He loosely plans to go into a science-related field, and would like to continue in some capacity in running. He’s not yet ready to pick a university, much less a major. He was accepted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Sunday night. But he’ll only be a Warrior for a few more months. So he’ll put one footfall in front of the other, and take life one draw of the bow at a time, until life tells him it’s time for the next performance. “As I’ve gotten older, especially through high school, I have to realize the moment I’m in and take it all in,” Lund said. “I’m not going to have these experiences in a couple of years.”

A Sterling native is dead after police say his wife killed him with a smoothie spiked with sleeping pills, then tried to take her own life. Apparently, she tried to do a remarkably similar thing in 2002, prosecutors said at her bond hearing Wednesday morning in Kane County Court. Eduardo “Ed” Gutierrez, 53, who until recently owned and operated First Avenue Coin in Rock Falls, was found dead in the couple’s Geneva home Jan. 28. His wife, Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, was found unconscious in an upstairs bathroom after apparently attempting to kill herself in the same manner, authorities said. She is being held on no bail and is on suicide watch in Kane County Jail, charged with firstdegree murder. She faces 20 to 60 years if convicted. Her next hearing is

Feb. 11. Kane County Coroner Rob Russell is awaiting toxicology reports to confirm the cause of death. According to information provided by police and revealed during Wednesday morning’s bond hearing: Over a 2-day period, sometime between Jan. 26 and Jan. 28, Julia Gutierrez mixed six pills of the sedative Temazepam, used to treat insomnia, into a smoothie and gave it to her husband. He drank it and died as a result. “The defendant then at some time and in some manner administered herself a high dose of the same narcotic in an effort to kill herself,” prosecutors said in their motion seeking to deny bail. Police responded to the Gutierrez home Jan. 28 after receiving a call for a well-being check, where they found Eduardo “Ed” Gutierrez’s body, and his wife in a “tranquilized” state. She left a note that read in part, “I love him so much, please forgive. God understands. I hope to see you in Heaven.” She told police she was suffering from an “environmental illness” that had made life unbearable for her and her husband.

“I didn’t want him to live to suffer,” she said. Geneva police also responded to an incident at the Gutierrez home in 2002, when she had slipped as many as 10 prescription sleeping pills into a milkshake for her husband, Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams said at the hearing. He was found groggy, and recovered. Assistant Public Defender Julie Yetter said no charges were filed because she underwent psychiatric treatment. A friend told police then that Gutierrez had said in a phone call, “We went to sleep last night, and we were not supposed to wake up,” Sams told the judge. Authorities think he died Jan 26. He went to lunch with a friend, came home and drank the smoothie. Last week, she mailed $40,000 in cash and a $5,000 check to a Rock Island family with instructions that the family give the cash to charity and spend the check, he said. She told police, “I’ve been holding on all this time for him, but I couldn’t do it anymore,” Sams told the judge. – The Chicago Tribune contributed to this article

SPRINGFIELD (AP) – Anyone under 18 who’s caught with electronic cigarettes or other tobacco-free nicotine products will face a fine or community service under a new Illinois law. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation last week that imposes penalties for minors who possess e-cigarettes. State Sen. Julie Morrison sponsored the measure. The Deerfield Democrat says it will protect young people “from the dangers of this increasingly popular product.” Illinois law already prohibits selling e-cigarettes to anyone under 18. Morrison says it makes sense for the state to ban possession as well. The penalties are the same as for possession of tobacco products. The first violation is a $25 fine or 15 hours of community service. The maximum penalty is a $100 fine and 30 hours of community service. The law takes effect June 1.

Medical marijuana patient list grows SPRINGFIELD (AP) – Illinois is continuing to approve patients to use medical marijuana, with about 400 more approval letters sent in January. The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Wednesday it has approved 4,400 patients for the pilot program. That includes 32 children. The pace of approvals is about the same as December. Marijuana industry players are watching the numbers closely as they push for more outreach to doctors, who have been reluctant to approve patients. Qualifying patients pay an annual fee of $100 for a marijuana card and need a doctor’s written certification. The health department says about 5,700 people have submitted complete applications, including those approved, those pending and 635 denials. A report with countyby-county figures was posted Wednesday on the department’s website.

DIXON – Holly Shover looked a bit like Lucille Ball, frantically wrapping deliciousness at the end of an imaginary conveyor belt. At the other end of the assembly line were her 11-year-old twins, Marcus and Isaac, speedily bagging milk for less-privileged youngsters. Seven friends got together Wednesday evening along with four members of the Buddy Bags of Dixon staff at St. Paul Lutheran Church to pack nearly 100 Buddy Bags. The local program began in January 2014, when two breakfasts, two lunches and two snacks were provided by the community for 30-some kindergartners and firstgraders at Washington Elementary School. This year, that number has reached as high as 105 bags, still a few dozen short of the 150 students the Dixon Public School District has identified as in need of the program’s outreach. The group would fulfill the need, but it hinges on parents signing a permission slip to participate. Back in 2014, all the bags

could be packed at once. Now they must be done in three rounds each Wednesday evening. The first goes to Jefferson Elementary School, the rest to Washington. “We can’t fit 97 bags on the table at once,” volunteer coordinator Gwen Weidman said. “It’s a wonderful problem to have.” The bags are provided not only for the identified students, but also for their siblings. The paper bags are double-wrapped, box-taped and placed in totes, to make sure everything makes it home. “We don’t want the bags to be too heavy – some of these kids are carrying two or three bags home,” Weidman said, adding that some are so excited to see food that they’d tear the bags open and dig in. The bags contain 12 to 14 items valued at $5, so it costs about $500 a week in cash or donated goods to run the program. There’s no overhead – the church donates its space, and the board’s nine members and 15 to 20 others involved are volunteers. The menu is varied: mac and cheese cups, cans of soup, pudding, fruit and apple sauce cups, fruit

On this particular Wednesday, the group was made up of friends and neighbors of public relations/fundraising head Jennifer LeMoine – Shover, Isaiah and Marcus, who attend Reagan Middle School, and 10-year-old Natalie Tucker, a Madison Elementary School fifthgrader. Even at her age, she’s cognizant that some of her classmates are hungry far too often. “This makes me feel really good that I’m helping others,”

Natalie said. “It makes me sad to think that people need this.” Her parents, Brian and Shannon, “appreciated that I wanted to do this.” She plays volleyball and has danced for 8 years, so she understands the importance of nutrition, as does Marcus, who plays soccer, football and basketball. “Without food, you wouldn’t have any energy,” Marcus said. “You’d be really weak and wouldn’t be able to do it.” This is all three of the kiddos’ second go-round, having volunteered last year, too. Seeing the kids involved warms LeMoine’s heart. “I tear up,” she said. “The younger generations get a bad rap these days. There are great kids in this community. I point to the garage or basement or porch. They lean their taut frames against the walls and taunt: Make me. They have accomplices: men with strong legs and strong wills. They have reasons: fear of rust, abduction, loneliness. And so we live together: equal standing for those with feet and those with wheels. There are more of them than us; I acquiesce. I stick to the kitchen, where on chill days I simmer a soup crowded with beans and greens. Itâ€™s wholesome and healthful, a steamy inoculation against germs. If only it worked on other infestations.

A long-simmering winter bean soup is packed with vegetables: leeks, carrots, celery, tomatoes and kale. 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper Â˝ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 sprig each: fresh rosemary, fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 3 cups plumped cannellini beans, see note Â˝ cup cubed ham Â˝ cup canned diced tomatoes 2 quarts chicken broth 2 cups thinly sliced lacinato kale leaves

Winter Bean Soup Prep: 30 minutes, plus soaking time Cook: About 2 hours Makes: 4 servings 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 leeks, white and pale green sliced into matchsticks, soaked, drained, dried 2 carrots, chopped 2 ribs celery, chopped

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1. Soften: In a large pot, heat oil over medium-low. Tumble in leeks, carrots, celery and garlic. Cook, stirring, until vegetables are softened and fragrant, about 8 minutes. Season with 1 teaspoon salt, Â˝ teaspoon black pepper and the crushed red pepper. 2. Simmer: Tie together rosemary, thyme and bay leaf; toss this bundle into the pot. Stir in beans, ham and tomatoes. Pour in 6 cups broth. Bring to

a boil, lower to a simmer. Cover and let simmer until beans turn tender and flavorful, about 1 hour 45 minutes for dried beans, about 30 minutes for canned. 3. Adjust: As the beans simmer, add some of the remaining broth, if need be. The goal is a broth swimming with beans, not a thick chili-style mash. 4. Serve: When beans are tender, taste the broth and season with more salt and pepper, if needed. Discard herb bundle. Stir in kale, cover,
