Car chase ends with arrest
Rockford woman wanted in Winnebago County on fleeing charge BY CHRISTI WARREN
DIXON – A Rockford woman was arrested after she led authorities on a car chase for more than 30 minutes through Lee County this morning. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, a state police officer tried to stop Annette Wilson, 32, as she was driving on Interstate 88 east of Dixon at 10:30 a.m. Wilson
then sped away, police said. State police policy is not to pursue a person in a situation like that, Lt. John Biffany said. “You have to weigh the risk versus reward,” Biffany said. “We’re more likely to pursue a forcible felony suspect, such as someone wanted for murder or arson. It’s inherently dangerous to pursue. ... You run a lot of risks.”
Biffany said the trooper then used his radio to broadcast information about the car. That’s when the sheriff’s office took over. As Wilson exited I-88 at the Dixon interchange, a Lee County deputy saw her car, a gold 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, traveling south and east of Dixon on U.S. Route 52. Every agency, Biffany said, has a different policy on pursuing sus-
pects. Lee County’s policy, in this situation, allowed for pursuit. According to a sheriff’s office news release, the deputy followed Wilson as she turned south on Nachusa Road, east on U.S. Route 30, and north onto Route 52 again. Deputies laid out spike strips, but Wilson avoided them and continued heading north. CHASE CONTINUED ON 2

Man injured escaping fire He leaped through firstfloor window of apartment BY CHRISTI WARREN
STERLING – A 64-yearold man was injured early Thursday when he jumped through a firstfloor window to escape a fire in his apartment. Sterling Deputy Fire Chief Mike Dettman said the department received a call about the fire shortly before 4 a.m. at the apartment building in the 1900 block of Third Ave-
nue in Sterling. When crews arrived, they broke into the building and found the fire in the kitchen of an apartment, but that much of the unit suffered heat and smoke damage. Crews needed about 10 minutes to put out the blaze, Dettman said. Neither of the two other apartments in the building was damaged. After jumping through the window, the man
went to a neighbor’s apartment to take shelter from the cold until authorities arrived, Dettman said. The cause of the fire was undetermined, but remained under investigation. The 64-year-old was taken to a Rockford hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Dettman said.

AURORA – A Rochelle woman was arrested in Geneva on Tuesday morning after, police say, she set her ex-boyfriend’s car ablaze following an argument. The Daily Herald reports that 53-year-old Otilia Delatorre is accused of setting fire to her 47-yearold ex-boyfriend’s 2005

Chrysler Town and Country minivan about 11 a.m. after an argument between the two became physical, and he left her alone inside the van. She then doused the van in flammable liquid and set it on fire while she was inside, later driving away in her own car, the Daily Herald cites police reports as saying. The Daily Herald
reports that police say Delatorre was arrested while driving in Geneva, and that when police pulled her over, she had suffered burns on her torso, and her clothing was charred. She is charged with arson, criminal damage to property, and two counts of domestic battery.

DeKALB – Cameron Lupton’s neighbors say the 28-year-old Malta resident was a shy man, and a great friend who told
them he struggled with paranoid schizophrenia. Police shot and killed Lupton on Tuesday when they say they found him attacking his father, Carl Lupton, and stepmother, Charlotte Lupton, with a knife at their home in the 1000 block of Quail Run in DeKalb. An autopsy showed Cameron Lupton died of a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Toxicology reports will be released in a couple of weeks. Police searched Lupton’s apartment Wednesday at 104 1/2 S. Third St. in Malta and seized his car. Jackie Belmont and Steven Williams are both friends and neighbors of Lupton who live two doors down from his former residence.
Belmont attended DeKalb High School at the same time as Lupton, who was a 2004 graduate. She said Lupton, 28, told her about a week and a half ago that he had stopped taking his medication because it “made him feel sick to his stomach.� Lupton was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and was unemployed. Nationwide, about 600 blood drives – which would have resulted in about 20,000 blood and platelet donations – have been canceled this month. Homemade bagels fun to make Dish requires just a few key ingredients
resting, heat 4 quarts (16 cups) water in a large pot. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and place racks in the bottom and upper third. Cover 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and mist with cooking spray. Or, oil baking sheets and sprinkle with cornmeal. When the water boils, reduce to a simmer and stir in baking soda. Gently lower 3 bagels, top side down, into the simmering water, leaving enough room for them to float around. (They will sink first, then rise.) Poach for a minute, then flip over and let poach for another minute. Remove bagels with a slotted spoon and place on a prepared baking sheet. Repeat with 3 more bagels. Brush beaten egg white over each bagel, taking care not to let it drip onto the paper. If desired, coat with toppings such as sesame or poppy seeds, grated cheese, sautÊed garlic or onion, etc. Place pan on lower rack and bake for 10 minutes. While the first pan is baking, repeat the poaching process with the remaining bagels. When the first pan has baked for 10 minutes, move it to the upper rack and place the second pan on the lower rack. Continue baking for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the first bagels are golden brown. Move the second pan to the top rack for its remaining 8 to 10 minutes. Cool for at least 30 minutes on a wire rack before slicing. agels are so familiar these days – perhaps too familiar, given the contortions of new flavors, from chocolate chip to spinach. But bagels, at heart, are about the basics: yeast, water, flour, salt and a bit of sweetener. What takes a bagel from good to great involves using the best basics. Yeast, water and salt are straightforward enough, although for convenience’s sake, you can’t beat instant yeast. It doesn’t need to first be dissolved in warm water, but merely is whisked into the flour. For bagels, bread flour is the path to the distinctive chewiness because it has more protein, or strength, than all-purpose flour. The choice of sweetener is the final key to a great bagel. Barley malt syrup, readily available in local food co-ops and some grocery stores, has a “malty� taste that gives bagels their essential flavor. Lacking this, you can use honey, or even a light molasses. But once you try this syrup, you may find yourself slipping a spoonful into all sorts of recipes for a flavor that not only is sweet, but has some depth. For the best-tasting bagels, as well as preparation ease, mix the dough in the evening, then let it slowly rise overnight in the refrigerator. This enables every smidgen of yeast to develop to its full flavor potential. In the morning, let the dough

You don’t taste “pepper.� You just taste “more flavor.� Granted, black pepper isn’t everyone’s favorite seasoning, but trust us on this one: Just a bit added to this recipe makes a knockout bagel. So it’s optional – but encouraged. Sort of like making bagels in the first place.
Bagels Makes 12 2 c. lukewarm water 1 tbsp. barley malt syrup (see Note) 1 tbsp. honey 3 tsp. kosher salt 6 c. bread flour 2 tsp. instant yeast Scant ½ tsp. finely ground pepper, optional 1 tbsp. baking soda 1 egg white, beaten Toppings as desired Note: Barley malt syrup

is found in food coops and some grocery stores. Instant yeast also is called bread machine yeast. If you choose to add the optional pepper, make sure it’s finely ground. Directions: In a bowl, stir together 2 cups water, barley malt syrup, honey and salt. In a large bowl, stir together flour, yeast and, if desired, the pepper. If using a stand mixer, use the dough hook on low speed as you add the water mixture to the flour. Mix until well-blended, about 3 minutes. If mixing by hand, use a sturdy spoon, or your hands, and mix for about 3 minutes. This is a fairly stiff dough. Turn the dough out onto a counter and knead for several minutes until the dough is smooth and only slightly tacky. Round into a ball and place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise at room temperature for about an hour.
