‘There’s no place like home’ Sixty-three tenants return after 11 days spent elsewhere BY DAVID GIULIANI AND PAM EGGEMEIER
ROCK FALLS – Rita Krummel, 73, walked into the five-story Civic Plaza II with her cane in hand Wednesday. Her cat, Tommy, awaited her. The manager, she said, fed her cat and even took care of the litter box since Jan. 4, when Krummel and the other tenants were evacuated from the complex because of flooding. “They spent time with all of the pets,� Krummel said. “We got taken care of.� The 63 elderly and disabled residents were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday. They had been forced out when a frozen sprinkler system pipe burst and flooded
the building. Their return was delayed Friday when a water line break flooded the first floor and elevator shaft. By Wednesday, the problems were fixed, and the building passed a city inspection. Some restoration work will continue after the residents’ return to the building, Rock Falls building inspector Mark Searing said. “There is still some work to do with the elevators, but one of them is working,� Searing said. “They will be doing some things like putting up some drywall, but they are all things that can easily be done with the residents there.� Clyde Long brought his mother back to Civic Plaza II shortly after 1 p.m. While most tenants stayed at Days Inn since the subsidized hous-
ing was evacuated, Ruby Long, 94, went to her son’s home. “[The residents] are all happy to be back,� Clyde said. “There’s no place like home. It was an inconvenience. My mother said she’s never leaving again.� Many tenants brought their belongings back in with grocery carts that they said were available at Civic Plaza. Residents said they were allowed to pick up items during the evacuation, as long as the manager was around. One 71-year-old man, who declined to give his name, said the staff at Days Inn was “super nice� and that he felt bad, because at least one Civic Plaza resident had given employees a hard time. Some of his neighbors, he said, are all right, while others “don’t know how to act.�

Still no cause found in fatal fire State fire marshal: Damage to home too extensive to make determination BY CHRISTI WARREN
DIXON – No official cause has yet been determined for a November fire that killed a woman in her rural Dixon home. An incident report obtained from the office of the state fire mar-
shal says that, while the investigation still is open, damage to the home is too extensive to rule on an exact cause of the fire that killed Louise LopezLandherr, 58. The report describes in detail the path that the fire took as it enveloped the house that the victim
shared with her husband, John, who was not home at the time of the fire. The investigator was, however, able to identify an enclosed porch on the building’s south side as the area with the heaviest concentration of heat and fire damage. In the report, two pos-
sible ignition sources are suggested. On the night of the fire, before it began, LopezLandherr was playing pool at the First Street Pub in Dixon. In an interview with the investigator, her husband noted that sometimes after playing pool, Lopez-Landherr
would sit in the enclosed porch and smoke two or three cigarettes before going to bed. She would then put the ashes and cigarette butts in a paper bag or an empty cigarette box, he said. He also told the investigator that they kept two space heaters in the
porch area. The investigator found one of the space heaters in the fire debris. According to a report from the Lee County coroner, Lopez-Landherr’s cause of death was asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

1,200 immigrants get state driver’s licenses Cards cost $30, are used only for driving SPRINGFIELD (AP) – More than 1,200 immigrants living in the U.S. illegally have so far received special Illinois driver’s licenses under a new state law, an Illinois Secretary of State’s office spokesman said Wednesday.
However, more than 30,000 appointments have been scheduled for applicants who want to take the test to obtain the new licenses, said Secretary of States Spokesman Dave Druker. People can currently take license tests at 14 locations statewide, though 36 locations will offer tests by the end of the month. The licenses, which cost
$30, may be used only for driving. They cannot be used as identification to board a plane, vote or buy a firearm. Unlike a standard driver’s license, which has a red stripe across the top and may be renewed every four years, the temporary visitor licenses have a purple stripe. License holders must reapply as a new applicant after three years.
Like applicants for traditional licenses, however, each motorist must pass a vision, written and driving test and is required to obtain auto insurance. Critics of the new system say the state should be cracking down on immigrants who broke the law by entering the country illegally, not accommodating them or making Illinois a more
attractive place for them to live. They also say there’s a potential for identity fraud because applicants won’t be fingerprinted. Instead, a photo of the applicant will be processed through

It’s a familiar kitchen economy strategy: roast a chicken (or buy a rotisserie bird at the supermarket), then turn it into three meals. Not as familiar is following that same approach with another meat, and the best of these, in our thinking, is a pork roast, specifically the shoulder, with its rich texture thanks to its generous fat. Often called a Boston butt or butt roast, a pork shoulder roast can be bought boneless or bonein. They can be quite large (8 pounds) or small (2 pounds). We like a 6-pound bone-in roast. It fits into a large Dutch oven for browning and yields plenty of meat to last several meals. Here we take a pork shoulder, roast it off, then break it down into four meals, each designed to feed a family of four. Our 6-pound roast yielded just under 4½ pounds of cooked meat. For the first night, we served slices of pork shoulder and figured everyone might want more than a standard 4-ounce serving. That still left plenty for subsequent nights. You can go many ways, of course. A pasta dish, a Cuban sandwich, pulled pork. We picked a stir-fry, tacos and, finally, a soup, which utilized the reserved bone for a broth and required less of the pork than the other meals.
Roast pork shoulder Heat oven to 325 degrees. Mix together in a small bowl 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper and 1 teaspoon toasted and ground cumin seeds. Rub all over 1 large bone-in pork shoulder roast (about 6 pounds), pressing the seasonings into the meat. Heat 2 tablespoons canola oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the pork; brown on all sides. Transfer the pork to a rack inside a roasting pan just large enough to hold it. Pour 1 quart water into pan. Roast until very tender, 2 to 3 hours. (Add more water to the pan if it becomes dry near the end of the cooking time.) Remove roast from the oven; allow to rest, covered, about 20 minutes. Cut slices for dinner; serve with vegetables and starch of your choice. After dinner, pull the remaining pork into shreds or cut into thick slices. Portion the pork into three sealable containers for the next three nights, saving the bone for broth. Refrigerate.

Pork and bok choy stir-fry Stir Âź cup hoisin sauce and 1 tablespoon soy sauce together in a small bowl; set aside. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable
oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat; add 2 cloves garlic, minced, and 2 teaspoons minced or grated fresh ginger. Stir-fry, 20 seconds. Add 2 medium heads bok choy, cut in 1-inch pieces; stir-fry until beginning to soften. Reduce heat to low. Add the hoisin-soy mixture and 1 pound cooked pork, sliced in thin strips (about 3 cups). Simmer just until heated through; squeeze half an orange over the stir-fry. Serve over cooked brown or white rice garnished with plenty of fresh cilantro, if you like.
$AY Pork and roasted squash tacos Warm 2 cups shredded pork in a little chicken or vegetable broth until heated through. Warm 8 corn or flour tortillas on a griddle or in a cast-iron skillet. Build the tacos with shredded chihuahua cheese, then the shredded pork, cubes of roasted butternut squash, toasted pepitas and pickled onions or very thin raw onion slices. Top with crumbled queso fresco and a little tomatillo salsa.

Cook at a low simmer until the pork and beans are heated through. Taste for seasoning. Mash the beans a little in the saucepan with a potato masher to thicken the soup. Garnish with plenty of fresh parsley.
