Stars align for line dancers BY KIMBERLY WATLEY For Sauk Valley Media
STERLING – Line dancers have had no local place to “Boot Scootin’ Boogie� for about 20 years, Linda Wolber and Bonnie Mathews recall. Their gathering place in Galt has long since closed. Most who dance say they would have to grapevine all the way to the Quad Cities, Chicago or the suburbs, but that was before River Country Stomp was founded in March. All are grateful for a moment of happenstance that brought them together. Karyn Hollenbach and Victoria Hughes were at Champs Bar and Grill, dancing to songs that a country band was performing. Normally the pair would go to the suburbs, where line dancing bars are plentiful. Jared Wetzell of Milledgeville was at Champs that night, too. He usually patronized the Rodeo Saloon, Feed House or WildWood Saloon, all in Iowa. Before long, the three were chatting up one another. Each always dreamed of a local place to dance on a regular basis. With their love of dance and Wetzell’s passion for teaching, they formulated a plan, ultimately creating River Country Stomp. As a group, they hoped to introduce new people to the dances they enjoyed and to meet as regularly as possible. The newly formed group was welcome to gather on Champs’ dance floor. They met on Friday and Saturday nights, or whenever live country music was available. Hughes, Hollenbach and Wetzell quickly learned they weren’t alone in their desire to line dance. The trio grew to 40, seemingly overnight. They soon outgrew the dance floor at Champs. “When we saw how many people were interested, I

The Moose Family Center and everything the Moose Lodge stands for, is what I wanted to incorporate with dancing.� DuWayne Beck, administrator of the Sterling Moose Family Center, said everyone benefited.

“It means a whole lot to this organization,� he sid. “This is the next generation for the lodge.� One hand is washing the other. RCS members are joining the Moose, and Moose members are joining RCS. “It really is a community service project,� Beck added. “I think it’s great.� Wolber, who learned of RCS as a member of the Moose, called the dancing “a lot of fun.� “I love to dance,� she said, “and it has been a really long time since we had some place close to home to do so.� Wetzell, who has 3 years of experience, said the first 30 minutes of the lesson is primarily for beginners to learn the basic steps. “For the most part, they have been pretty quick learners,� he said. Hollenbach laughed. “No back-of-the-classroom mentality here,� she said. “I tell ’em, ‘Oh, no, honey, you’re going in the center.’ It is common nature to hide in the back, but that is the worst place to be. “We can walk them through and encourage them to get in the center of all of us. That way, every time they turn, there is someone they are able to follow.� The intermediate students arrive at 6:45 p.m. and dance until 8. Every week they review dances, hone steps, and learn something new. They also are incorporating couples dances periodically. Wetzell takes requests from students. “Sometimes they tell me what they would like to learn next,� he said. His demonstration videos are also uploaded on YouTube, so dancers can practice at home. “I love that it is giving people something to do that is affordable good, clean fun,� Hollenbach said.

ROCK FALLS – Three people were injured Thursday after their car crashed into a transport trailer on Interstate 88, state police said. According to a news release, Alaina Pfeifer, 22, of Elgin, was driving east on Interstate 88 when she lost control of her car while crossing an iced-over bridge at mile marker 36.8. Pfeifer’s car struck the bridge rail before reentering traffic and colliding with the trailer, driven by Rebecca Hubbard, 48, of Mooresville, N.C. Pfeifer and her two passengers, whose names were unavailable, were taken to CGH Medical

OREGON – Unlike most private and public employers, the Oregon School District will pay less for employee health insurance premiums in the coming year. A plan approved by the school board last month with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois will bring a 1.4 percent drop
in costs to the district. “That doesn’t happen very often,� Superintendent Tom Mahoney said. “I was very pleased we were able to do this.� He said the decrease was the result of a competitive bidding process with Blue Cross Blue Shield and another company. The district shares the cost of insurance with employees. In some
cases, employees also will pay lesser premiums, while others will have a modest increase. The district’s portion of the health insurance cost will be $1.1 million. For Oregon Education Association (OEA) members, the district pays 88 percent of the premium cost for an eligible employee, 84 percent for the employee and spouse, 84 percent for the

employee and children, and 77 percent for family coverage. For Oregon Education Support Personnel Association (OESPA) members, the district pays 92.5 percent of the premium cost for an eligible employee, 60 percent for the employee and spouse, 60 percent for the employee and children, and 60 percent for family coverage.

Unexpected bills seen frequently in health care I used to pay little attention to what my insurance policy covered. I became more acquainted after I had emergency surgery to my intestines in July. Over the past few weeks, I’ve written stories on the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. One thing is for sure: Insurance is expensive for most people. Sure, you can get a relatively low premium, but that means you probably have a deductible of $6,000. Ouch! Not many people have that kind of money sitting around.

I have talked with a number of residents who are contemplating what they’ll do if they lose their policies. Those who are older and selfemployed have options – all expensive. Those who get insur-
ance through their employers, as I do, are more fortunate. But we find ourselves with unexpected bills, too. In November, I detailed my first dispute with my insurance company. It informed me it would pay for my surgery, but not the $2,700 for anesthetics. I told the company that my policy covered anesthetics, but my insurer responded that the person who administered them wasn’t in-network. At one point, a company representative told me I should have asked the person whether she was in-network.
The company backed down, thankfully, realizing that no one could be expected to do that in an emergency, especially at an in-network hospital. On Dec. 3, I received another notice from my insurance company that I had to pay $671 for blood work in August. The blood work was called a “molecular pathology procedure Level 2.� This helped the doctor to determine the situation with my digestive system and what I should do about it. In my mind, it was worth it. But I’m no expert. My insurer said it consulted
its medical director, who “carefully reviewed all available pertinent clinical documentation.� The “clinical rationale� for not approving the expense: “There is insufficient evidence in the peer-reviewed medical literature to support the effectiveness of this intervention, especially with respect to long-term health outcomes.� The insurer must already have let the hospital know, because 6 days later, the hospital sent me a letter asking for the money. “If you have an unusual financial problem, please
contact [us] immediately,� it said in a letter. My problem was that I didn’t see this charge coming. In America, that’s not so unusual. Our health care system spends billions and billions of dollars on figuring out who owes what. That process involves much uncertainty, at least for patients.

EFFINGHAM (AP) – Ron Henderson’s dying wish to have his 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo restored became more about the effect he had on those around him than about the project itself. During his yearlong battle with melanoma, Ron served as an inspiration to many around him. “When he first got diagnosed, I was a mess,� said his wife, Cathy Henderson. “I had separation anxiety, but Ron took care of me.� Cathy credits Ron’s spirituality and approach to life as the strength he needed to deal with the diagnosis. “Ron started every day with a cup of tea and his Bible,� she said. “When he was diagnosed, he chose quality of life over chemotherapy,� she said. “He wanted to enjoy the time we had left.� The last several months have been the most taxing of Cathy’s life. In addition to losing her companion of 15 years, her mother passed away five weeks prior to Ron’s death. Seeing the interaction between her mother and husband cemented her belief in her husband’s remarkable spirit. “My mother was sick for a long time before she died,� she said “Ron was a mentor to her. I could tell Ron helped her with the fear. By the end, she didn’t have that fear of dying.� Longtime friend Kevin Pocrnich echoed Ron’s connection with others.

This Dec. 21 photo shows the 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that Kevin Pocrnich and many others in the community worked to restore for Cathy Henderson’s late husband, Ron Henderson, in Effingham. Henderson, who was diagnosed with melanoma a year ago, died a few weeks ago, just days before the car was complete.
“Ron just had a way about him,� he said. “He would do anything for anyone.� When Ron was diagnosed with the terminal illness, the two sat down to decide how he would spend his remaining time “I asked him if he wanted to travel the world,� recalled Pocrnich. “He said ‘I want to get that Monte going.’� About four months before his death, the friends pulled the car out of storage and began to disassemble it. Ron, who was from Greenup, commuted to his job at General Electric in Mattoon more than 20 years ago in the vehicle. “The car needed everything,� said Pocrnich. “It was in really bad shape.� Once they tore into the vehicle and began replacing various rust spots, friends and family started lending a hand. As word spread, local businesses and people within the community began donating toward the project as
well. “There were a lot of great people that got involved in the project,� said Pocrnich. “Ron, my buddies and I started working on it in the morning and kept at it until midnight.� The 67-year-old’s health, however, continued to deteriorate. Although he wasn’t able to see the completed renovation – he died two days before – he was able to sit in the car and hear it run. Pocrnich spent the morning of Ron’s funeral fulfilling a promise to his friend. He put the last pieces of chrome on the vehicle and got a frontend alignment. He then loaded the car on a trailer and brought it to the visitation and funeral. “Ron had a lot of people at his visitation,� said Pocrnich. “Everybody loved seeing the car.� Coincidentally, after Ron and Cathy met, it was over her 1970s model Chevy Monte Carlo that
the two bonded. ButCathy doesn’t plan on keeping the newly renovated vehicle. “He wanted me to have the car,� she said. “It is a beautiful car, and I love what these guys have done, but I don’t want it without Ron.� Cathy said Ron gave her his blessing to sell the car and donate the proceeds to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for cancer research. Pocrnich estimates the Monte Carlo will bring $15,000 at an auction they are planning. No date has been set for the auction yet. The Super Sport Chevy features a 454-cubicinch motor and new top, paint, bodywork, interior, sound system, tires and rims, new front-end parts and much more. “We all want the money to go to charity in Ron’s memory,� said Pocrnich.

LANARK – Shaw Media, owner of Sauk Valley Media, has acquired the weekly Prairie Advocate from owners Lynn and Tom Kocal, the companies announced Thursday. Tom Kocal, owner and publisher of the Prairie Advocate for the past 38 years, will continue as editor of the publication. “The Prairie Advocate has been a very successful publication in northwestern Illinois for many years, and it fits into Sauk Valley’s footprint perfectly,� said Trevis Mayfield, publisher at Sauk Valley and vice president of Shaw Media. “Our intention is to build on the foundation that the Kocals and their employees have built.� Tom Shaw, CEO of Shaw Media, said his company was “pleased to bring the Prairie Advocate into our growing portfolio of familyowned, communityfocused publications.� The two companies have had a good relationship for many years, Mayfield said.
