fashion The needle and thread have a strong pull for this Sterling ‘man of the cloth’

STERLING – It’s about what’s inside, in more ways than one, for burgeoning clothing designer Apolinar Castillo. The 27-year-old loves to create garments from scratch, and his six plussized models turned heads when they walked the runway wearing Apolinar Castillo Designs at the Drake Hotel in Chicago in February 2014. But he’ll also make alterations to your prom dress – albeit somewhat reluctantly. “When you get something from the store, the Alex T. Paschal
factories have so much more machinery than we do,” he said Dec. 23 in the classroom at Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts in Sterling. “I’ll do it, and it’ll look nice on the outside.” But on the inside? Sometimes, not so much. “At the end of the day, I’m putting my name on that. You want it to look good,” Castillo said.
How it began Castillo has had his heart set on art since he began drawing and painting 20 years ago. While he was a senior at Sterling High School, he got a copy of Seventeen magazine in
the mail. Chalking it up as a gag, he gave it to his sister, Lena. But a few months after the first magazine arrived, he took a closer look. “People always think of skinny models and very vapid-type things,” Castillo said. “But in the magazine, they were being more inclusive and saying, if you’re this body type, you might want to try this.” But on the inside? Sometimes, not so much. “At the end of the day, I’m putting my name on that. You want it to look good,” Castillo said. FASHION CONTINUED ON 2

Castillo would like to open his own shop someday FASHION
graduated a semester before him, held a fashion show that fall, and then in October gave Castillo his first big break, inviting him to be one of five designers to show off his looks at the Drake Hotel. From the moment he accepted the offer until the February show, he was at a sewing machine. He’d design dresses, redesign them in different colors. It was madness, he said. “It was just nonstop sewing and ordering fabric,” he said. “I was in here all the time.”

It piqued his interest, but he remained skeptical about fashion until a friend convinced him to watch the TV show “Project Runway,” and he got a closer look at just how artistic the industry was. “I was very skeptical,” he said. “But my fear came from the fact that I didn’t know what to expect. But not knowing what to expect was also what kept me going.” His original plan was to get a degree in accounting, then go back and get an art-related degree. After one semester focusing on accounting at Sauk Valley Community College, he went all in on art at the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago in 2009. Unable to get enough loans for residency and to go full-time, he kept working in the Kroger Bakery, where he’s worked since he was 19. He graduated in July 2013 and then took an internship with Rachel Allan, a prom- and pageant-wear design house. Gabrielle Zwick, who

Even though family and friends were there, and he got to use a couple of models he’d known for years, with each of Zwick’s models’ sashays and shantes, his heart pounded harder and harder. “The worst part for me was walking out there and introducing myself and my line,” he said.
is certain he’s bound for greatness. Somehow, he and Kady Knox-Andrzejewski, a Rock Falls High graduate who also graduated from ILIA, never met in Chicago. But they ended up working at Kroger together, and had plans to go into business together. That is, until her plans changed, when she and her husband, Stefan, had their little girl, Aura. She’s 1, so Kady’s dream of designing apparel for music festival clothing – electronic music, specifically – is on hold. So she’s excited to live vicariously through Castillo. “He doesn’t give up,” she said. “He’s always happy and very friendly. He’s always trying to help the next person.” For instance, when he can’t do an alteration, he passes along Kady’s number. “You just really don’t see that in the fashion world,” she said. “He brings something completely different.”

After that, he helped models in and out of dresses, keeping their hairstyles as pristine as possible, and matching his jewelry sponsor’s pieces to the right dresses. “It was madness for a good 12 minutes,” he said. “After all that work, you want to be sitting down and watching it happen.” He survived. He loved it. After the show wrapped up about 11, he and friends and family basked in the afterglow at his hotel afterward, eating pizza and watching a movie. At the early hour of noon the next day, they had to clear out. “I felt like I had a hangover,” he said. “I had so much adrenaline going that when it was over, I had nothing left.” Still, he hung onto
the magic as he walked through the hotel parking lot. “I had like ... a high ... just from the fact that I’d just graduated college, done my first fashion show, had that chance,” he said. “I was so grateful to have all these people willing to help me.”
Sew, what’s next? Castillo admits that, while it would likely be a sound business decision to move to the city, it might not be for him. Besides, he just landed a job directing the activities at Regency Care in Sterling. He’ll help residents paint and draw, or really any activity that uses artistic flair as therapy. And shortly after the show, he began teaching sewing classes at Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts, which
became another source of joy – eventually, after he figured out some things. “Most of the students here are women my mom’s age,” he said, laughing. “Many of them have been sewing for 40 years, which is longer than I’ve been alive. It’s a little bit unnerving.” But there are kids’ classes, too. A whole different animal. “With kids, you don’t have to give them a reason – they’re sponges; they soak it up,” Castillo said. “With adults, you have to give them a reason. And that’s something I had to learn.” He’d love to open a brick-and-mortar boutique someday, but in the meantime, he’s doing most of his business online. At least one colleague

Old TVs getting hard to ditch Paybacks are going down the tube, and recyclers respond BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ
DIXON – Old TVs are like crazy relatives – everybody has at least one or two, but no one knows quite how to get rid of them. Thrift stores don’t want them, your grandkids sure as heck don’t want them, the trash guys won’t take them – and they’re illegal to dump in landfills, so stop leaving them by your mailbox; it annoys the neighbors. It’s even getting harder to take them to the folks who used to welcome them – local nonprofit recycling centers. Responding to a drop in the return on recyclables, especially old TVs, Secure Recycling Services is ditching its daily residential drop-off service and opting instead to keep its once-a-month event only.
Residential recyclables will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the last Friday of the month only, starting Jan. 29. TVs and computer monitors will be accepted free of charge from Lee County residents only. Aluminum cans still will be accepted daily. A year and a half ago, SRS could get a quarter a pound to recycle TVs and old cathode ray tubes, or CRTs, but that barely covered the cost to get them to the recycler. Now SRS, a division of Kreider Services, must pay 10 cents to 25 cents a pound to get rid of the plastic dinosaurs – not including the cost of labor and transportation. That’s because the payback on plastic has dropped from 6 to 8 cents a pound, down to 2 cents a pound,
over those 18 months, Lisa Oelke, SRS’s director of recycling, said in a news release. That’s a pretty steep drop for a nonprofit, considering folks are dropping TVs off at the Palmyra Road center to the tune of 10,000 to 15,000 pounds a month, said Randy Hardin, SRS operations supervisor. Lee County already is subsidizing the monthly recycling event, which began in September. “We have never been subsidized by the counties for our daily dropoff, and it is a drain on SRS/Kreider Services to man the area for 8 hours per day for an average of three to five drop-offs per day of mostly items that cost us to recycle,” Oelke said in the release. The recycling facility is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. As a division of Kreider Services, it provides work for about 25 people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. In Ogle County The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department holds its monthly electronics recycling day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the last Friday of the month at the Ogle County Annex Building, 909 Pines Road in Oregon. If a drop-off day falls on a holiday, it will be held the Friday before. The department also will accept items on two Saturday mornings next year: from 8 a.m. to noon April 16 and Oct. 15. Items accepted include flat screen, tube, projection, and console TVs, computer hardware, monitors, routers, printers, copiers, scanners, FAX machines, shredders,
laptops, cell phones, tablets, speakers, DVD players and VCRs, stereo equipment, radios, phone systems, answering machines, gaming systems, microwaves, extension cords, wire, Christmas lights, CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and ink cartridges. Each vehicle is limited to two tube-type TVs or monitors. Remove electronic packaging – cardboard, plastic wrap, and Styrofoam will not be accepted with electronics. Drop-off days are for Ogle County residents only. ers, CD players, stereo equipment, desktop and laptop computers, monitors and accessories, including printers and ink cartridges, cell phones and telephones; VCRs and DVD players, as well as cardboard and office paper, books, newspaper and magazines; and aluminum cans. Recycle your Christmas lights The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is working with Secure Recycling Services in Dixon and others to collect and recycle holiday light strings, including Italian mini-lights, traditional lights with larger glass bulbs and LED lights. Extension cords also will be accepted. Rope lights, garland, live greens and wreaths, and other decorations will not be accepted. The lights will be sent to a recycling facility where they will be separated into their components for use in new products. Any proceeds will be donated to United Way in Ogle County.

Bombs explode, tearing things apart. Good things – like people, like Paris, like peace. Conventions crumble. Good conventions – like dialogue, disagreement, diplomacy. Bonds fray into fear. We fear for the open mind, open heart, open door. We stew on these thoughts and stir a stew. This version, a tagine, is fragrant with the flavors of Arab cuisine – coriander, cinnamon and saffron. We know it from many a meal in Paris, where it has sustained generations of hungry students. It steams savory and sweet, familiar and foreign, wise and winsome. Together in the tagine, two traditions intertwine; they meld into something complex, something worthy, something we know to be good.
Lamb Tagine Prep: 1 hour Cook: 1 hour 15 minutes Makes: 4 servings 13⠄4 cups chicken broth Ÿ pound plump dried apricots 6 tablespoons (or so) olive oil 13⠄4 pounds boneless lamb shoulder, fat trimmed, cut into 1½-inch cubes Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

This lamb tagine is fragrant with the flavors of Arab cuisine – coriander, cinnamon and saffron. 3 onions, chopped 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes 2 pinches saffron threads 1 to 2 small dried chili peppers 2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger ½ teaspoon ground cumin Ÿ teaspoon ground cinnamon Ÿ cup chopped fresh cilantro ½ cup sliced almonds, toasted Prepared couscous, for serving 1. Plump: Bring broth to a boil. Drop in apricots.
Pull off heat. Let plump. 2. Brown: In a Dutch oven, large heavy skillet or tagine bottom, heat 3 tablespoons of the oil over medium-high. Pat the lamb dry, then drop into the hot oil – no crowding. Brown on all sides, 4-6 minutes. Use tongs and a mitt-covered hand (oil may spatter) to lift out meat. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the fat out of the pan, leaving any stuck bits. 3. Soften: Reduce the heat to medium-low, and add 2 more tablespoons olive oil. Tumble in the onions and garlic; cook, stirring, 10 minutes. Pour in tomatoes.
