About Byron F
ounded in 1835, Byron is a historic city and quaint tourist destination along the banks of the Rock River, affectionately know as the “Gateway to the Rock River Valley.” Byron, which originally flourished as a railroad town, now has about 3,700 residents to whom it caters with numerous activities for its families and tourists to enjoy. Its many recreational venues and attractions include the Byron Forest Preserve, the Byron Dragway, Byron Motorsports Park, Lake Louise Campground, Stone Quarry Park, Parkview Golf Course and the Byron Museum of History. ByronFest is held the second full weekend of July. Activities include a carnival, a 5K, an arts-and-crafts show, a beer garden, a parade and live music every night. Shaw Media file photos
The Weiskopf Observatory is the perfect spot to watch the stars on clear nights when the Byron Forest Preserve has scheduled star-gazing events. The Byron Forest Preserve has recently added lands, including the Stephen J. and Deidre Nardi Equine Prairie Preserve. This site, popular with horse owners, is located on River Road between Oregon and Byron and includes a plaque explaining the history of the property.

About Forreston
I
n the 1850s, when the Illinois Central Railroad began traveling through the area that is now Forreston, the first buildings built were a depot and a boarding house for rail workers. The man credited with founding Forreston is John J. Hewitt, who built a grain warehouse near the rail line about 1854. The Hewitt house still stands at 308 Third Ave. This village of about 1,500 is centered on its schools. The Forreston School District, which includes German Valley, Baileyville and Leaf River, is geographically one of the largest in the state. Forreston is known as the home of the Cardinals. The town also boasts a newer library and several parks for families to enjoy.

ount Morris, founded in 1848, owes its start to the founding of the Rock River Seminary in 1839 on what is now Kable Square. The seminary was sold to the Church of the Brethren and named Mount Morris College in 1884. The college closed in 1932, but many of its stately buildings remain. Mount Morris has seen its fair share of changes and growth throughout the years. Kable Printing Co., established by twins Harry and Harvey Kable in the late 1800s, later became a part of Quebecor World, an international publishing firm. The plant closed in 2011. The official Illinois State Freedom Bell is in Kable Square. It is the centerpiece of the village’s annual Let Freedom Ring Festival, held on July 4 weekend. Dedicated by Ronald Reagan in 1963, the bell is rung 13 times each July 4 to signify the original 13 colonies of the United States.

The Mount Morris Historical Museum is home to many items representing all facets of village history. The village also is the gateway to White Pines Forest State Park. Pinecrest Community, on the south edge of the village, started as the Brethren Home in 1891. It has since grown to become a significant part of the Ogle County community. The Pinecrest Manor nursing home was built in 1963. The east wing is for skilled care; the west wing is for intermediate care. It also offers an Alzheimer’s care unit, Pinecrest Terrace. The village encourages residents to live a lifestyle that they prefer, whether that be in cottages, apartments, or within care units.

About Oregon L
ocated on the banks of the scenic Rock River, Oregon is the county seat of Ogle County. The site was discovered by pioneer John Phelps in 1833. He was so taken by the forested river-fed valley that he decided to build a cabin and settle where the Potawatomi and Winnebago Indian tribes once lived, naming the colony Oregon, meaning “River of the West.” Later, settlers realized that local hummocks dotting the landscape were Indian burial mounds. The Ogle County Courthouse, built in 1891 and recently renovated, is in the heart of the historic downtown. It houses a variety of county offices, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. Oregon’s Commercial District was added to the register in 2006. OREGON CONTINUED ON 11

The Oregon Dam is a popular location for anglers to try their luck.
The Oregon Public Library, a block away, also is on the national register. The Ogle County Judicial Center was built in 2006 just west of the old court house. The library boasts the Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery. Sculptor Lorado Taft, created “The Eternal Indian,” also known as the Black Hawk statue, which overlooks the Rock River just north of town. Founded by Taft in 1898, the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony included painters, sculptors, poets, storytellers, and musicians. Many of the works in this historic collection have been refurbished. Want to see more? Check out the Oregon Sculpture Trail (www.fieldsproject.com), which includes several of Taft’s works, and well as 10 offerings from the past decade. Outdoor facilities include baseball and softball diamonds, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, walking trails, sand volleyball courts, a concert area, horseshoe courts and river fishing areas. In addition, several picnic shelters are available for group rentals. The Oregon Park District’s Nash Recreation Center has a six-lane, 25-meter indoor swimming pool, a walking track, a fitness center, meeting rooms, and racquetball and basketball courts. The free Concerts in the Park series and the Farmers Market are popular summertime activities. In addition, the Ogle County Fair brings an atmosphere of fun and family every August. Autumn on Parade (www. autumnonparade.org), held the first full weekend in October, brings thousands of people to the downtown for the arts-andcrafts fair, the farmers market, the car, truck and motorcycle show, the antique tractor show, the Harvest Time Parade, the 5K and the Duck Dash. A few miles outside town, Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center, once the home of Chicago Daily News owner Walter Strong, holds an Olde English Faire both days. The Candle Light Walk, held the Friday after Thanksgiving, kicks off the Christmas season. The walk features downtown stores and businesses offering sales and free goodies, and tours of wonderfully decorated homes throughout the city.

About Polo
P
olo, population about 2,500, has grown to embrace its historical roots. The Polo Historical Society has restored and maintained the Aplington House, built in 1854 by the town’s founder, Zenas Aplington. Abraham Lincoln stayed there when he was a lawyer traveling from courthouse to courthouse on a regular circuit, making Polo a favorite spot for travelers interested in history. The house is now a museum with clothing and other items that represent life in Polo’s past. Across the street is the Burns Home, now home to the Blackhawk Waterways Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was built by Dr. William Wallace Burns, a civic leader whose efforts led to the creation of Polo’s first schoolhouse in the mid-1800s. The society also has restored Henry School, a one-room schoolhouse south of town, and owns and maintains the old lime kiln, south of town off Galena Trail Road. Polo Public Library is an Andrew Carnegie facility built more than 100 years ago. It is a popular place for historians and genealogists, and has a collection of rare books.

About Rochelle Rochelle is known as the “Hub City” because of its location at the intersection of several major transportation routes. Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in the United States, passed through Rochelle, as did U.S. Route 51, one the first highways to go the full north-south length of the United States. The Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway mainlines cross inside city limits, making the town a mecca for train-watching fans. Railroad Days is the town’s summertime festival, held in June. Rochelle also is the hometown of Joan Allen, a three-time Academy Award nominee, and the 1997 movie “A Thousand Acres” was filmed there.
