Stop procrastinating and start exercising! The benefits of physical fitness are too great to ignore. Feel younger, live longer. It’s no slogan — these are actual benefits of regular exercise. People with high levels of physical fitness are at lower risk of dying from a variety of causes, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Physical Fitness: What the Benefits of Exercise Mean for You There’s more good news. Research also shows that exercise enhances sleep, prevents weight gain, and reduces the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even depression.

Advises Permuth-Levine, “Even in the absence of weight loss, relatively brief periods of exercise every day reduce the

risk of cardiovascular disease.” Set realistic goals and take small steps to fit more movement into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store instead of driving. “The key is to start gradually and be prepared,” says Permuth-Levine. “Have your shoes, pedometer, and music ready so you don’t have any excuses.” To help you stick with your new exercise habit, vary your routine, like swimming one day and walking the next. Get out and start a baseball or soccer game with your kids. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, have a plan B — use an exercise bike in your home, scope out exercise equipment at a nearby community center, or consider joining a health club. The trick is to get to the point where you look at exercise like brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep — as essential to your well-being. Remember that physical fitness is attainable. There also may be psychological changes such as; agitation, inappropriate behavior or concrete personality changes. There are several types of dementia and other disorders linked to dementia that your loved one could benefit from a Montessori-style dementia program which we offer at Morningside of Sterling. What makes Morningside of Sterling Memory Care different than other memory care communities? Our “Bridge to Rediscovery” program celebrates residents for who they are now, with the abilities they have today. Artists paint….teachers teach. This program is based on the cognitive ability of the individual, not what their deficits may be. Each program is designed to be used one-on-one or in small groups and can be adjusted vertically based on those “abilities”. We use color cueing for identification to each resident’s room and also have a locked memoryshadow box outside each apartment for family members to put photos and memorabilia for their loved one to identify with. Upon move-in each family is given an empty memory box to fill with photos and memorabilia too so that we can work one- on -one with each resident in finding moments of familiarity and joy! Our building was specifically designed for Memory care with a visually unobstructed hallway, built-in/ fold down shower chairs, and handicap accessible sinks along with widened doorways. The Serenity Shed: A New Bereavement Center Opens in Oregon Submitted by Serenity Hospice

Serenity Hospice and Home is always looking for ways to stay innovative and smart in their approach to bereavement and grief. The Serenity Shed, which opened this month in downtown Oregon, is their latest project. People grieve in many different ways when faced with the loss of a loved one. Many people find that having a project to focus on alongside others in a similar situation helps a person work through their grief and sense of loss. The Serenity Shed, a new bereavement center in Oregon, will be a functional workshop where anyone can spend time working on the re-purposing of donated items or just visit with others while enjoying a cup of coffee. All supplies including power tools will be available and the center always welcomes donations of workshop materials. Repurposing old furniture and home items and turning them into beautiful new functional pieces has become the hobby of many Americans and Lynn

Knodle, the Executive Director of Serenity saw a real opportunity when it came to the old furniture being donated to Angel Treasures, which is a resale shop supporting hospice. “At Serenity we are always looking for ways to help people handle their grief in new and creative ways,” said Lynn Knodle, the Executive Director of Serenity. “Working on projects with your hands and designing new pieces of furniture or doing something as simple as painting are proven therapeutic techniques to help handle grief. If you have ever been lost in a project or had a great conversation while working alongside someone, you can see the power of using this type of facility to work through the bereavement process.” People donate items to Angel Treasures that cannot be sold “as is”. For example many pieces, such as a baby crib, cannot be legally re-sold, but they can be turned into a lovely bench or wine rack. Also pieces that are outdated can be re-painted and look like new. Some of the re-purposing gets quite creative, such as

an old suitcase turned into a dog’s bed or an old coffee table transformed into a Lego play station. You do not have to have previous experience. We have people to help teach you the equipment and we have many ideas and instructions to get you started. Once the items have been successfully repurposed, they will be sold in Angel Treasures and at the Serenity Shed. They will also be posted on our Facebook site. All the proceeds will go to Serenity Hospice and Home. “We are always looking for ways to be smart and effective at Serenity,” Knodle said. “With just a little work, some of these donated items can be re-sold. But most importantly, we can now offer yet another type of grief assistance that has been proven to be very effective.” The Serenity Shed has received the support of a grant offered by The A. Charles and Lillemor Lawrence Foundation based in Oregon, IL. The foundation looks for innovative thinkers and ideas in the local community that they can collaborate with on many different projects. The Serenity Shed has also already received support from the Village of Progress’s clients and volunteers who have spent many hours helping to get the facility ready to open.

In the outpatient, orthopedic setting physical therapists see a wide variety of conditions that affect their patients’ lives. From common sports injuries to complex post-operative recoveries, a physical therapist’s treatment arsenal and knowledge needs to be vast to meet the needs of their patients; and keep them on the road to recovery. One of the common conditions that physical therapists treat is tendonitis. Tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon that is most likely caused from the overuse of a specific joint or body part. There are many treatment options a therapist can choose from to treat

tendonitis, however we at Sauk Valley Physical Therapy turn to and utilize the ASTYM treatment technique. ASTYM is a regenerative treatment technique that has been used by physical therapists since the mid- 1990’s. This technique uses tools to “scrape” the muscles, tendons and ligaments in an affected area. ASTYM scraping helps stimulate soft tissues regeneration and remove unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions. It is effective because it targets the actual cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms. ASTYM is a treatment option for individuals suffering from tendonitis and/or chronic irritation symptoms such as:

Taking care of your teeth at home can help you maintain your dental health and prevent periodontal, or gum, disease from developing. Richard H. Price, DMD, spokesperson for the American Dental Association and a former clinical instructor at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, says regular home care should include daily brushing and flossing. “My advice is to brush thoroughly, at least twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening before going to bed,” says Dr. Price. “Be sure to floss at least once a day. I do it after every meal when I can.” Proper dental care at home, combined with seeing your dentist regularly, is your ticket to good dental health, says Price, who is retired from a 35-year private group dental practice in Newton, Mass. Dental Health at Home “Use products that have the ADA (American Dental Association) seal,” says Price. “This means that the products — toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, etc. — are safe to use as directed and will keep your mouth healthy — no gum disease, no cavities.”

Consequences of Poor Oral Hygiene

• Spend at least three minutes brushing your teeth two times a day. Use a timer if you have to to ensure that you’re spending enough time on your oral care routine.

Poor oral hygiene invites plaque to accumulate around the base of your teeth and gum line, causing your gums to become red and inflamed.

• Use floss at least once a day every day to clean between your teeth.

“Plaque is the bacteria-laden film that, if allowed to accumulate on teeth and gums, will cause tooth decay and gum disease,” Price explains.

• Buy ADA-approved dental cleaning tools and toothpaste. “Basically, brush and floss, and do it correctly,” says Price. The goal of regular home care is to combat the buildup of plaque in and around your teeth and gums, and fight bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease. Adults who neglect their teeth and who let plaque build up often develop infections in the delicate tissue around their teeth, Price explains. A whole arsenal of dental health tools is available in drugstores to help you clean your teeth at home. These range from regular toothbrushes to power toothbrushes, inter-dental cleaners (picks, etc.), waxed and unwaxed floss, oral irrigators, and mouth rinses. You should ask your dentist which of these tools you might want to include in your daily cleaning routine.

If you neglect the care of your teeth at home and fail to go to the dentist regularly, accumulated plaque could potentially lead to the development of empty spaces around your teeth. These spaces could eventually lead to the destruction of bone and other fragile tissues supporting your teeth, and you could lose your teeth. The good news is that being diligent about your dental health care and getting regular dental checkups can prevent plaque from forming and even reverse early gum disease. “A plaquefree mouth is a healthy mouth,” says Price. Along with regular dental checkups, “proper bushing and flossing are the only effective ways I know of preventing plaque buildup.”

Myths about nursing homes A nursing home is normally the highest level of care for older adults outside of a hospital. Nursing homes provide what is called custodial care, including getting in and out of bed, and providing assistance with feeding, bathing, and dressing. However, nursing homes differ from other senior housing facilities in that they also provide a high level of medical care. A licensed physician supervises each patient’s care and a nurse or other medical professional is almost always on the premises. Skilled nursing care is available on site, usually 24 hours a day.

If I can’t take care of myself at home, a nursing home is the only option. Today, there are many options to help older adults stay at home, ranging from help with shopping and laundry to caregiving and visiting home health services. If home care options are no longer possible, other options, such as assisted living, may be a better fit if the primary need is custodial care rather than skilled medical care. Even if hospice care is being considered, home care is also often a possibility.

Considering a nursing home does not mean you don’t care about your family. If you cannot provide the necessary care, it is the responsible decision to find a place where your family member’s needs will be met.

Nursing homes are poorly run, and I or my family member will get awful care. While it is key to research homes thoroughly and visit frequently, it is not true that all nursing homes provide poor care. There are more and more safeguards in place, and a facility’s staffing information and any previous violations are available to the public to help you make your decision.

The staff is excellent and take great care of me. They are always friendly and make me feel at home. There are a lot of activities that keep me involved with the friends I have made such as dominos, baking & gardening. I chose to come here on my own. My mother lived at Resthave Home, so I knew I was making the right choice.

Once I’m in a nursing home, I’ll never leave. Some illnesses or injuries have progressed to the point where both ongoing medical and custodial care may be necessary through the end of life. However, many people encounter a nursing home for the first time after a sudden hospitalization, such as from a fall or stroke. After rehabilitative care, either returning home or to another housing option may be a better fit.
