Welcome

FROM THE STREATOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Streator Chamber of Commerce is trying something new.

With the partnership of Shaw Media, we’ve published a community guide. We hope this will be an annual publication, serving as a business directory and showcasing Chamber members.

Many residents may remember the business and industry review sections that were published annually in The Times newspaper. These editions featured local businesses and served as directories. Readers would save the pages and use them as reference guides.

That is our hope with this glossy magazine.

Definitely thumb through all articles and check out what our community has to offer: from manufacturing to shopping, from dining to 52 things to do. Read about our Chamber award winners, the Streator Family YMCA, Streator Public Library and all about the Streator Area CEO program, then hang onto the magazine.

Pay particular attention to the directory at the end of the guide. Here, Chamber businesses are organized by category. If you need a realtor, you will know where to look. If you are seeking restaurants, there’s a variety of options, etc.

It’s my hope this guide will be not only a great introduction for someone new to our community, but also a refresher for some of our long-time residents.

The ultimate goal is to showcase what Streator has to offer, because as you read through it, you will see there’s plenty here.

n MAXINE WARGO AWARD

Winner: Patrick Chismarick

111TH ANNUAL DINNER

CHAMBER HONORS COMMUNITY LEADERS

The intent of the Maxine Wargo Award is to honor an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding continuing commitment to improving Streator through their work with a volunteer community organization. Patrick Chismarick is a designated business agent/managing broker and owner of Chismarick Realty and Town and Country Apartments. Chismarick serves on numerous boards, including Illinois Valley Realtors, the Chamber of Commerce, the Planning Commission and the Streator Area CEO program. He is committed to guiding and mentoring the next generation — whether it’s young realtors or students in the community. Continuing his family’s tradition, he is community-minded, finding a way to support programs that advance the community. Since taking the helm, his businesses have continued to grow, all while further cementing their base firmly in Streator.

n CEPHAS WILLIAMS AWARD

Winner: Jim Coonan

The intent of the Cephas Williams Award is to recognize and promote the investment of private capital in the Streator area. Cephas Williams, the namesake of the award, established and operated a successful construction business. Jim Coonan of Alloy Specialties started his business out of his garage and incorporated in 2000. His business has grown, with a location in Blackstone and in 2024 expanding with the purchase of property on Benchmark Industrial Drive. The business specializes

in fabricated aluminum, steel and stainless components. The business started a skills training workshop, working with other manufacturers to develop a stronger workforce in Streator. This program, which includes welding training, allows for employees to acquire a hands-on, on-the-job education in Streator.

n BECKIE CHISMARICK AWARD

Winner: Joe Richard

The Beckie Chismarick Award honors an individual who has demonstrated an outstanding continuing commitment to improving Streator through their professional work and personal involvement with local charities and organizations. Joe Richard, a volunteer for Streator Fest and Light Up Streator, spearheads a year-round effort of fundraising, planning and coordinating for his organizations’ signature events. Light Up Streator has grown to include decorations for other holidays as well. He is generous with his time, helping many organizations. Fueled by his determination and vision, Streator Fest has set more attendance records, bringing headline bands, fireworks and a carnival, and attracting visitors from across north and central Illinois. Light Up Streator continues to grow its footprint in City Park with more displays, and the effort goes beyond the park, with decorations extending to the downtown, city buildings and welcome signs.

n JACK OF ALL TRADES AWARD

Winner: David Reed

David Reed, a Streator City Council member, Streator Public Library trustee, historian for the Streatorland Historical Society and past president of the Hardscrabble Lions Club, received the award. It is intended to recognize an individual who exemplifies what it truly means to be a model citizen and distinguished business professional in the community. In 2025, he led a presentation on John Williams at the library and has given several talks on local historical figures. Years ago, he led the effort to raise $26,000 to restore a Civil War flag, now on display at the library. Having been involved in several civic groups, Reed has become a go-to individual for his extensive knowledge of the community, his work with nonprofits and his time on local government.

n COMMUNITY PILLAR AWARD

Winners: Bill and Donna Stone

The Stones have been a rock to Streator’s downtown — a community pillar — owning and operating Ace Hardware for the past seven decades. W J Stone Ace Hardware served Streator for more than 75 years prior to their retirement in 2025, providing seemingly every little screw, nail or

item imaginable for home repair needs, and beyond.

Not only have Bill and Donna Stone provided a cornerstone business, but also they were instrumental in bringing a Christmas parade to the city, before the city had established its now annual lighted parade. Donna Stone has been a supporter of the Streator Public Library, Engle Lane Theater and local theater in general, focusing on bringing the performing arts to children through her library workshops and the Gingerbread Players.

By passing on their business to the Amir family, the Stones ensured their legacy continues, keeping the hardware store going in the heart of downtown.

n YOUNG LEADERS AWARDS

The Streator Chamber honored six young leaders: Shannon Harback Eutsey of the Streator Family YMCA, Jordan Harcharik of SOCU, Abby Huff of Constellation Energy, Kyle Russow of Streator Unlimited, Brandon Urbance of Star Ford Lincoln Mercruy and Lily Urbance of Dairy Queen.

Shannon Harback Eutsey held leadership roles at the YMCA for four years: two as CEO/executive director and two as program director. She continues her role at the YMCA as its new marketing director.

Jordan Harcharik has been a leader in bringing financial literacy to Streator, heading programs for daycare students all the way up to high school ages. She’s the lead trainer at SOCU, involved in the Illinois Credit Union League and an Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce 40 Under 40 recipient. She played a pivotal role in helping bring back the Streator Area CEO program (see page 13).

Abby Huff played a vital role in setting up many of the community-minded initiatives from Constellation. She has arranged clean-ups at the local daycare, baseball and softball fields, and the veterans’ home in La Salle; and helped collect

supplies for local schools. She is active in the Women in Nuclear Group, has been involved in the Keeping Christmas Close to Home parade and educational programs.

Kyle Russow started in a direct care position and advanced into a case management position two years ago at Streator Unlimited. This year he will help coordinate the new State of Illinois Dignity in Pay Grant. He interfaces with social service agencies in Streator, such as the YMCA and Brain Injury Clubhouse. He has coordinated dances, events and theme weeks to raise everyone’s spirits.

Brandon Urbance played a leading role in the auto sales sector of the community.

Managing Star Ford Lincoln Mercury, he has been committed to keeping the service of a local auto dealer in our community. This all came while previously owning and operating The Eastwood golf course and events center and Dairy Queen, along with his spouse Lily.

Lily Urbance still owns and operates the Dairy Queen, which has continually helped nonprofit organizations in the community with fundraisers and support. She and Brandon were also instrumental in making the transition of ownership at the Eastwood smooth, sticking around to offer their assistance to new proprietors.

n BUSINESS OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Financial Services: SOCU has been a leader in the community for more than 85 years, with its roots just across from Owens glass factory and now holding branches in four other neighboring towns. In 2023, the credit union moved up from the seventh best-performing credit union in the nation up to third in the nation by S&P Market Intelligence. The credit union takes a proactive approach to the community, supporting events, organizations, and causes, not only by contributing with sponsorships, but also rolling up their sleeves and becoming part of many of them with hands-on

volunteering, including helping with sales at Streator Fest. They have established outreach programs to teach youth about healthy finances and continue to utilize innovative ways to connect with their customers.

Manufacturing/Industrial:

Teleweld has its products shipped across the world. It was founded to service the railroad industry as a welding contractor. The manufacturer developed the technology to produce the first Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) Heater Cars that have been in use by leading railroads since 1969. Through the years Teleweld has become a manufacturer of grinders, rail saws and other related equipment, making products unique to Streator’s facility.

Professional/Business Service:

Countryside Animal Clinic celebrated 40 years of serving the community — namely furry, scaly and feathery friends. The business has earned the community’s trust through their skilled and compassionate care, being there for families through happy and sad times. Dr. Sue Schmitt started the clinic in her hometown shortly after college and has remained a dedicated citizen, giving much of her time outside of the office to the betterment of the community. The clinic grew and adapted with the latest technology and moved to its current facility on Oakley Avenue. The staff include Dr. Abbie Eiten, Dr. Kelsie Allen and Dr. Bob Harms, along with other veterinarian technicians, assistants and staff.

Retail/wholesale: Refurbished Treasures LLC is a destination artisan market for all seasons. The store sells handcrafted items, home decor, florals, candles, gifts, soaps and bath bombs, even featuring a section of local authors, among other items. When there’s a downtown retail event, owner Lori Fornero is among the first to support it and contribute ideas. Refurbished Treasures are known by their colleagues as supportive of other downtown businesses and have a vision of working together to create a stronger Streator.

Nonprofit: Streator Fest continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in Streator, in a positive way. Not only is the committee committed to having one of the best fireworks displays in north central Illinois, but also they have attracted headliners such as Sevendust, Hinder and Cooper Alan to perform on a Streator stage, bringing thousands of visitors to the community. This year the fest surpassed its record for attendance. To bring headline talent like that, it is a yearround task for the committee. They collect donations, line up sponsors, organize fundraisers and volunteer countless hours.

Restaurant/entertainment:

The Bullpen goes above and beyond to help the community. Hosting regular pulled pork and cheeseburger fundraisers, in which the business gives generous portions of the proceeds, the recipient has helped organizations from St. Vincent de Paul to Streator High School teams, as well as Streator Leading Ladies, the Chamber and Engle Lane, among other groups. Since opening and moving to the community, The Bullpen’s owners have made it their goal to be active participants. The restaurant is a go-to spot for catering, fulfilling orders for some of our larger employers and has become a neighborhood anchor on Johnson Street.

Community action: The Streator Public Library focuses on reaching many different ages, groups and interests. Their programs are numerous and go beyond books. The library has hosted events about art, theater, food, culture and even scavenger hunts and laser tag to get youth socializing. The library hosts an annual summer kickoff event for reading and a haunted house. It offers the Soderstrom Room for organizations hosting events, has a laminating machine, 3-D printer and new sewing area. The library also ensured its historic building would remain a jewel for future generations by restoring its murals and dome.

CEO students

about

STREATOR CEO PROGRAM IS BUILDING UP NEXT GENERATION

The Streator Area CEO program is providing Streator and Woodland high school students with the tools to become the next generation of business leaders.

With a focus on hands-on learning, the CEO program features at least 40 visits to businesses and at least 40 classroom guests. Students also create their own class business in the first semester and their own individual businesses in the second semester, culminating with a trade show.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the class has a total of eight juniors and seniors after a one-year hiatus. Led by a 10-person board, the committee raises money to operate the program through community investors. The class is facilitated by Derek Barichello, executive director of the Streator Chamber of Commerce.

Streator Area CEO was established in the fall of 2020 with the support of local business community partners and the area’s schools. The program was led by facilitator and Streator High School educator Kirk Melody. There have been 35 alumni of the program.

The course created by Midland States Bank seeks to prepare youth to be responsible, enterprising individuals who become entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial thinkers and contribute to economic development and sustainable communities. The CEO program goes beyond a textbook. Students are immersed in real life learning experiences with the opportunity to take risks, manage the results and learn from the outcomes.

Students are required to dress business casual, be on-time, shake hands, make eye contact and are encouraged to ask questions.

Community mentors also will be paired with each student to assist them with their individual businesses.

So far, students have visited the YMCA, Countryside Animal Clinic, Flowers Plus, Danchris Nursery, Three Wishes, SOCU, Streator Public Library, Vactor Manufacturing, Streatorland History Museum, Midland States Bank, Chismarick Realty, Stertil ALM, Central Church of Christ and Bowl-Mor Lanes with upcoming visits scheduled for Constellation Energy, Dabarkadz Grocery and Lilja. Speakers have included Beth Palm of United Way, Jordan Harcharik of SOCU, Theresa Solon at State Farm, Carri Pedelty at Midland States Bank, Streator High graduate Mark Blakemore, Kris Noble with the CEO program and Alea Ogle at Blue Eyed Rascal.

To host the program, serve as a guest speaker, be a mentor or invest in the program, contact Barichello at facilitator@streatorareaceo.com.

HISTORY &

MeetCOMMUNITY Where

Founded in 1870, the Streator Public Library has long been a cornerstone of education and community life. With early support from the Ladies Library Association, the library grew from a small reading room into a lasting institution. Thanks to a $35,000 Carnegie grant and the dedication of Ralph Plumb, the current building at 130 S. Park St. opened in 1903.

Celebrated for its beauty and history, the library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Its stained-glass windows and literary murals reflect Streator’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. In 2023, a major restoration of the dome and murals — funded through federal support and community donations — preserved these treasures for future generations.

Today, the library continues to be a place where people of all ages come to learn, create and connect. Programs include crafts, story times, game nights, book clubs, and even laser tag. The outreach team also leads tours, hosts field trips

Pictured: Joe Rabbit, Dolly Telford, Jason Telford & Darel Good

and participates in community events. Groups and organizations are encouraged to contact the library to arrange tours or invite a librarian to speak at meetings or gatherings.

The library’s collection includes more than 40,000 books, plus audiobooks, DVDs, playaways, magazines and newspapers. Patrons can borrow items from other libraries through the PrairieCat Library System. Digital collections such as Libby, TumbleBooks, Boundless and Biblioboard provide eBooks, audiobooks and educational tools for readers of all ages.

Technology and services enhance every visit. The library offers computers for adults, teens and children, an

accessible workstation with a braille keyboard and access to a 3-D printer, AI translator, projector and drop-down screen. Additional services include printing, faxing, lamination, poster printing and notary assistance (free for cardholders).

Looking for a unique venue? The Soderstrom Room is available to rent for just $25 for two hours and includes technology access and a coffee and tea station. The library’s grand staircase and balcony also make stunning settings for wedding, prom or family photos.

Library cards are available to residents and non-residents, with free Cards for Kids for qualifying youth.
