T
wo 16-year-olds, Kyle Nutt and Zade Abdullah, have been seen all over Sterling and Dixon donning superhero costumes. And now, the entire Internet is catching a glimpse. “I was cringing seeing them leave the house in superhero costumes, wondering what they were up to,� Kyle’s father, Stephen, said with a laugh. “This is not their typical video, and I am proud of them.� The blue and green avengers have been committing random acts of kindness upon strangers. Each took turns filming recipients’ reactions to create “How to be a Super Hero,� which is quickly headed viral. Jimmy Taylor ran a second camera to help capture the reactions of surprised strangers, including a homeless man who dropped to his knees, looked toward the heavens, and clasped his hands in prayer. His response left Zade’s mother, Maysaloon Abdullah, humbled and proud. “When they gave him food and a coat, the homeless man started to pray,� she said. “I feel so sorry for this man. I wish I can bring more for him. I feel very proud of my son for doing this.� Kyle’s parents also were surprised by the kindness the boys displayed and the overwhelming response they have received from co-workers, friends, family and strangers since the video was uploaded Sunday. Accustomed to the goofy antics that are typical of the comedy work that Kyle and Zade produce, Stephen and Jessica Nutt said the new video offers a nice glimpse into the boys’ big hearts. Jessica said she had no idea the pair was working on a serious video. “I saw them editing, and there was a police car on the screen, and they hurried up and shut it down,� she said. “I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh! What are they up to this time?’ When I saw the video, I was pleasantly surprised.� The YouTube partners and Dixon High School classmates, who have
known each other since kindergarten, became friends in eighth grade — “and now,� they said simultaneously, “share a brain� as they “feed off of each other� to make videos. After seeing their favorite YouTuber, VitalyzdTv, help a homeless man, they thought, “We can send a good message and help people too,� Kyle said. Their effort is being well received, garnering about 6,000 views in its first 24 hours online. The video is quickly making rounds on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, and some have submitted it to TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. “So many people have already come up to me said it made them cry,� Zade said. “I guess we didn’t know how it would impact them watching. I felt surprised, and it made me feel good. And I like how many people are paying it forward.� While preparing to film inside of a store, they overheard a woman tell a cashier she didn’t have enough money to buy everything she had picked up. sprang into action: They bought the DVDs the woman had to put back. After Kyle handed her the movies, she smiled, reached her arms out and said: “Thank you so much! I have to hug you. That was very sweet of you.� Other acts of kindness seen in the video show their silly sides, including their taking doughnuts to police officers; paying for a movie rental while recommending the lady consider “The Avengers� next time; and running up to a drivethru window to pay for the food that a man had ordered. “At first, we were nervous,� Kyle said. “Had butterflies in our stomachs, but after the Wendy’s one went so well, we got excited, and it felt amazing to see them be so excited for us to do that stuff. And we felt inspired to do more. “The positive feedback fuels our fire. I especially liked the kid part. Little boys love superheroes, I always wanted to be a superhero, and knowing I was inspiring little kids just felt good. I saw myself quite a few years back in their smiles.�

The best part about this quick fame, the boys say, is they are realizing their goal. “We keep hearing that we inspired someone to do something for someone else,� Kyle said. “That is really what we wanted it to be about, people paying it forward and giving back.� Zade said he was surprised how “such little things can make people happy.� His favorite part of making the video was when they arrived at a nursing home to hand out poinsettias, and they were welcomed by many smiling faces. “Those people really made me happy,� he said. “It inspires me to do better, to be better. Watching the video makes me feel good. I guess you could say, I want to give more flowers.� “There is faith in humanity,� Kyle added. “It’s been pretty rough with shootings, the economy, and all these bad vibes going around. We really just wanted to show people this word isn’t doomed, and that there’s still people with good hearts.�

DIXON – Alcohol might have been a contributing factor in the death of a man found alongside Interstate 88 just west of Dixon on Nov. 13, Illinois State Police said Thursday. Lee Catlin, 65, of Bettendorf, Iowa, was found along the side of the highway, just west of Dixon, almost 12 hours after two 911 calls were made to alert state police to his presence. Catlin’s car was found along the the highway less than a
mile west of where his body was found, State Police Capt. Jim Winters said Thursday. “It does appear alcohol was a contributing factor [in Catlin’s death],� state police spokeswoman Monique Bond told the Associated Press on Thursday. “We just don’t know. Maybe he had passed out someplace, then again got up [and collapsed elsewhere]. It’s unclear, and it’s unfortunate.� Court records show that on Nov. 9, 4 days before Catlin’s body was found, he was arrested by Davenport Police and charged with operating while under the influence, a first offense. Catlin, a science teacher for more than 30 years at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Moline, retired in 2003.
Throughout his career, he maintained a strong focus on technology, and during his time as student congress adviser, the school got its first two computers, according to a news release from the school written at the time of his retirement. Since the beginning of the investigation, state police have said that troopers dispatched the night of Dec. 12 in response to the 911 calls found no evidence of him. On Thursday, Bond told the Associated Press that “all protocols and procedures were followed� during the response, and that no internal investigation is being conducted. As to Catlin’s death, Winters said that investigation is nearly complete.

RAND FORKS, N.D. – Looking for a gift that your family and friends will enjoy and is easy on your wallet? Baked goods – breads, pastries, pies, cookies, bars, cheesecake and brownies – might be just the answer. Some items are suitable for mailing; others are best presented in person, said Paul Holje, co-owner of Dakota Harvest Bakers in Grand Forks, N.D. “Any items that don’t need to be refrigerated� are good candidates for shipping to loved ones at a distance, he said. Foods such as pies, cheesecakes, regular cakes and anything that has a sauce should not be mailed, he said. The bakery has been called on by customers to prepare items such as cookies, breads and scones to send as gifts. “We wrap large cookies in individual bags and, for little cookies, we put six to a bag,� Holje said, “to make a nice presentation and to protect them from breakage.� Gingerbread cookies ship well when properly bagged, said John Ferguson, a baker at Dakota Harvest. Think ‘theme’ Customers can order gift baskets loaded with tempting baked goods from the bakery, Holje said, but
they could try “building� one themselves. He suggests thinking in terms of “themes.� “You could take a bread basket and add a cutting board, a bread knife, fancy jams, local honeys and almond butters to get them started on the path to good breads,� Holje said. Most people don’t have bread boxes in their homes, but such items conjure up warm memories of days past, he said. A wooden bread box is available for as little as $20, although they can cost as much as $100. As a guest in friends’ homes, he’s noticed that many times people don’t have a reliable wine bottle opener or they struggle to cut bread for lack of a good bread knife – both are items that would likely be appreciated as part of a themed gift, he said. For the tea lover, fill a basket with boxes of the person’s favorite teas, some scones and a teapot or a pretty teacup set, he said. This could be custommade as a large or a smaller gift – but cute either way. The coffee-lovers on your gift list would enjoy a basket filled with a bag of specialty coffee beans and a grinder, a French coffee press, cookies and a tin to hold the beans. Restaurant supply stores, such as Culinex in Grand Forks, are good sources for high quality kitchen items – pans, skillets and utensils – at reasonable prices, he said. “You can get a good bread knife for $20 to $30,� usually less than you find at department or specialty stores.� More economical For those looking
for less expensive options, especially for gift-giving at a distance, take a Mason jar and fill it with layers of dry ingredients needed for a batch of soup, Holje said. “You could add a nice pot with a [serving] spoon� and a recipe card to top it off. “The theme is what you’re after,� he said. “You’re not cooking it, but you’re getting them prepared to.� Similarly, all the ingredients for scones – except the butter and milk – “are not costly,� he said. “It’s just the time it takes to put it all together,� he said. A container of your favorite homemade hot cocoa mix could be given along with a couple of nice mugs, he said. To give the gift of a delicious breakfast, he recommended a six-pack of pint-size Mason jars, each one filled with oatmeal and dried fruits, raisins, chocolate chips or anything else that enhances it. Liquid is added and the cereal is eaten right out of the jar. “It’s an adaptation of instant oatmeal� from packets, he said, but it’s a gourmet version. Recipes for different flavors can be found by Googling “overnight oatmeal,� said Holje, who describes himself as an avid follower of food and kitchen blogs. Maximize elements For gifts that will travel, consider ditching the paper or bubble-wrap, he said. “Instead wrap the gift in tea towels or use the towels as stuffing� around the gift items. “Give them something useful� instead of filler that will be thrown out.
