Hyatt is ready for the 2018 Iowa Speedway season to get underway with this weekend’s Wide Opening Weekend featuring NASCAR Truck Series and Xfinity Series races.
Hyatt up to speed as new Iowa Speedway president By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News David Hyatt is it. Ready or not here they come, but Hyatt and his Iowa Speedway team is ready for the 2018 racing season. Wide Opening Weekend is Friday, Saturday and Sunday with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series coming to Newton. The NCWTS M&M’s 200 is at 6 p.m. Saturday and the Xfinity Series Iowa 250 is 4 p.m. on Sunday. Hyatt was announced as
the new president of Iowa Speedway in February. Since then, Hyatt is been getting up to speed and settled in at the Newton racetrack. “We’re on pace for what we expected coming into the first weekend. There are a few good seats available for the weekend races. We encourage people to purchase tickets for the races. We have a family-friendly environment,” Hyatt said. “For me, learning what we do for a race weekend is a continuing the observing process of what we have or grow it into. Our camping is going well and
just a handful of spots on our RV Hill still available for this first weekend.” Hyatt said the Speedway has relocated its camp grounds from across the street to on the Speedway property. He said they were working closely with the folks at KOA across the highway from the racetrack concerning camping. “I’m so excited to be here at Iowa Speedway. I’m a shorttrack fan whether it’s on dirt or asphalt. I grew up going to dirt track racing with my dad in West Virginia. And this is The Fastest Short Track on
the Planet,” Hyatt said. “Iowa Speedway is the right size — it’s a big enough short track you’re going to get a lot of high speed — and fans who come for the race have a great experience.” Build on what works has been foremost on Hyatt’s agenda working with the Iowa Speedway staff. “I’ve inherited a fantastic staff. This team is recognized throughout NASCAR as one which works well together and puts on a great event,” Hyatt said. Iowa Speedway’s 2018 rac-
ing season was in place for Hyatt to come in and work with the staff to learn about the operation. The Speedway has three race weekends each summer starting with this weekend. On July 7-8 is the ARCA Racing Series Iowa 150 and the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 then July 2728 brings the Xfinity Series back for the U.S. Cellular 250 paired with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Store 150. Twice is nice for Xfinity Series at Iowa By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News
NASCAR’s Xfinity Series brings its high-octane racing to Iowa Speedway not once but twice during a race season. It is the only series which takes on the 7/8-mile oval track twice on the bookend weekends for the Iowa Speed-
way summer of racing. The 2018 season at the Newton racetrack is the 10th year for the U.S. Cellular 250, which is the final race at The Fastest Short Track on the Planet on July 28. Last year’s U.S. Cellular 250 was won by Ryan Preece in a thrilling overtime green-white-checkered run holding off Joe Gibbs Rac-
ing teammate Kyle Benjamin. But revving up the season for the 2018 Wide Opening Weekend will be the seventh NASCAR Xfinity Series Iowa 250 presented by Enogen. The Iowa 250 is Sunday. The 2017 Iowa 250 was won by William Byron, who went on to win the Xfinity Series championship. Byron is busy this season
taking over the for retired Jeff Gordon in driving the No. 24 car for Hendrick Motorsports in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Fans see young drivers moving up into the Xfinity Series cars every season as they work their way up to a possible job as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver.
It is also a series where fans might get to see a favorite Cup Series driver. Brad Keselowski, a full-time Cup Series driver, is a three-time Xfinity Series winner at Iowa. Sam Hornish Jr. won the Xfinity race at the Newton track in 2014 then XFINITY | 7

IndyCar speed is special at Iowa Speedway By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News Iowa Speedway is billed The Fastest Short Track on the Planet. Fans really get the greatest sense of that fact when the Verizon IndyCar Series hits the 7/8-mile oval track each season. The 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 is July 8. Drivers will be competing in the new chassis rolled out by IndyCar for the 2018 season. Racing fans will see the top drivers in IndyCar on the Newton racetrack, but also the
second tier of IndyCar racing with the up-and-coming drivers will zip around the track in the Indy Lights Iowa 100 prior to the Iowa Corn 300. Veteran Helio Castroneves finally claimed a series win at Iowa in 2017. There will not be a repeat for him as Castroneves has retired as a driver after he helped Andretti Autosport recapture the coveted Iowa Speedway pump trophy in 2017. Andretti Autosport had won six straight IndyCar races at Iowa until the 2016 race. It has won eight of the 11 In-
dyCar Series races at Iowa Speedway. It was in 2016 that Josef Newgarden drove the Ed Carpenter Racing No. 21 car to a Iowa Corn 300 victory. Newgarden moved to Team Penske in 2017 and captured the Verizon IndyCar Series championship. He is back with Team Penske in 2018 along with Simon Pagenaud, who was second in the 2017 driver standings. Also driving for Team Penske is the 2018 Indy 500 champion Will Power. Power was the Iowa Corn 300 pole
winner in 2017 and finished fourth in the race. Power is the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series champion. Four-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon won at Texas on June 9 and took over the top spot in the series points rankings. Dixon drives for Chip Ganassi Racing. 2017 Indy 500 winner Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport is in second and Power is third. Three-time Iowa Corn 300 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport is fourth in the points standings and Newgarden is fifth. With one
race before coming to Iowa, the top rookie is Robert Wickens of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Wickens has won a pole and sits seventh in the points race. The 2017 Rookie of the Year was Ed Jones, who is 12th in the points standings with one race to run before coming to Iowa. Matheus Leist was the Indy Lights 100 winner at Iowa Speedway in 2017 and now is driving in the IndyCar Series for A.J. Foyt Enterprises along with Tony Kanaan, INDYCAR | 8

He brings nearly 30 years of experience in the NASCAR industry. Hyatt launched the original NASCAR.com and most recently served The Motor Racing Network (MRN) as president and executive producer. In that role, Hyatt developed, oversaw and executed the network’s operational budget, business plan and growth strategy. “I’ve got a lot of experience around the NASCAR space but not so with IndyCar,” Hyatt said. “With the NASCAR series races, it’s about learning the logistics of a race weekend

Last year’s U.S. Cellular 250 winner Preece announced in December 2016 he was walking away from a second fulltime season as a NASCAR Xfinity Series driver. Preece had an offer from JD Motorsports for that ride. He ran full-time in 2016, but chose to funnel his 2017 Xfinity Series resources into this two-race stint with JGR. Preece was runner-up to Kyle Busch — a Monster Energy Cup Series driver — in the Xfinity race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway
at Iowa. “My team understands IndyCar racing needs, but I’ve never been to a start-to-finish IndyCar race weekend in my 30 years in motorsports.” Hyatt said he went to the IndyCar race at IMS Raceway for the Phoenix Grand Prix at Avondale, Ariz., earlier this season. IMS Raceway is a oval track as is Iowa Speedway. “We watched how they did things and meet with their key personnel making sure we were all pointed in the same direction,” Hyatt said. “There’s subtle differences to what IndyCar needs versus what NASCAR personnel and teams need.” Hyatt said he was excited to experience the different styles earlier in July 2017. He second race of the season was at Iowa where he won and he is 24th in the 2018 Xfinity driver standings. The intensity will continue to be high as the “Race to the Chase”, the Xfinity Series “playoff ” system, returns to Iowa Speedway for the third consecutive year. A win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 would all but guarantee a driver entry into the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chase, provided the driver is in the top 30 in points, and has attempted to qualify for each race. Coming into Saturday’s Iowa 250 veteran driver Elliott Sadler, who won the U.S. Cellular 250 in 2012, is the Xfinity Series points leader and Cole Custer is second and

Veteran drivers, young drivers compete in NCWTS By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News Some of the top talent in the NASCAR ranks run in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Here at Iowa Speedway that would be the NCWTS M&M’s 200 on Saturday present by Casey’s General Store. It is the only appearance at Iowa for the Truck Series in 2018. The NCWTS is runs under the industry-wide format of three stages of the race. The annual M&M’s 200 provides fans a great look at younger up-and-coming drivers and veterans, who enjoy the racing at the truck series level. There will be a new Iowa
Speedway truck race champion crowned as the 2017 winner — John Hunter Nemechek has moved up to be a full-time driver for Chip Ganassi Racing at the NASCAR Xfinity Series level. Also moving up to the fulltime driving spot in the Xfinity Series was 2017 NCWTS champion Christopher Bell. But not too worry there’s plenty of veteran and new drivers on the track for the truck series. Johnny Sauter and Matt Crafton are the top two veteran drivers in the NASCAR truck series. Sauter finished second in the series last season and Crafton was fourth. Sauter was the 2016 NCWTS
champion and Crafton won a series championship in 2014. Crafton won at Iowa Speedway in 2012. “It’s great racing. If you watch any racing and you’re a true racer, truck racing is the definitely the best racing in NASCAR,” Crafton said about staying at the truck series level.“I firmly believe that, not just because I race it. “Since 1995 when I started watching the truck racing, I thought it was amazing racing. It’s just awesome. The races are short enough that we race so hard from green flag to checkered flag.” Sauter comes into Iowa Speedway as the NCWTS hottest driver, winning four of
the eight races this season. He is coming off a win at Texas and is the series points leader. Noah Gragson, who won the pole for the 2017 M&M’s 200 and finished sixth, is second in the points standings. Iowa native Brett Moffitt, Grimes, is third in the series points standings. Grant Enfinger and Crafton round out the top five. The NCWTS also runs under the Chase format for the championship. All three of NASCAR’s nationally touring series have the playoff system. Drivers accumulate points for stage wins and race wins, and placings in each race leading up to the final Chase races to conclude the season.
Most of the top NASCAR Xfinity Series and Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers competed and were successful at the NCWTS level. Young drivers are looking to climb the ladder to the ultimate level of their sport — the Cup Series — with strong showings at the truck level. The 2018 racing season at Iowa Speedway kicks off with Saturday’s NCWTS M&M’s 200. Practice run are at 8:35 a.m. and 10:5 a.m. on Saturday. K&N, ARCA racing provides proving grounds By Jocelyn Sheets Newton Daily News “Stars Are Made Here,” is one of the mantras of Iowa Speedway. It comes from Iowa Speedway’s role as a proving ground for young drivers, especially in NASCAR. Racing fans have the opportunity to see the up-andcoming drivers in feeder-racing series for NASCAR and IndyCar each season. There will be one IndyCar progression race along with he Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa 300 in July. Also on that July 7-8 weekend will by the ARCA Racing Series 150. Then on July 27, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East/West Casey’s General
Stores 150 is the prelude to the final race of the season — NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 — at Iowa Speedway. ARCA series races and K&N Pro races have crossover of drivers. When the 2018 NASCAR Next group was announced in May, the nine young drivers featured compete in ARCA or the K&N series. At least four compete in both series. Anthony Alfredo, Hailee Deegan, Riley Herbst, Derek Kraus, Chase Purdy, Will Rodgers, Zane Smith, Tanner Thorson and Ryan Vargas make up the nine-driver 2018 class. Smith sits atop the ARCA driver points list with three races before the series
comes to Iowa. In the K&N Series, Alfredo and Vargas are in the top five in the East and Krause and Deegan are in the top seven in the West. The K&N East leader is Tyler Ankrum with three races left before Iowa and Derek Thorn leads the West with two races left before coming to Iowa Speedway. ARCA returned to the Newton track in 2015 after a two-year absence. One thing has not changed for ARCA Racing at Iowa — there still has been no repeat winners of the ARCA race at Iowa Speedway. Dalton Sergeant claimed the 2017 ARCA win. Previous ARCA winners here include West Des Moines native Mason Mitch-
ell in 2015, Steven Wallace, who won the inaugural race in 2006, Frank Kimmel, Matt Hawkins, Parker Kligerman, Tom Hessert III, Ty Dillon, Alex Bowman and Grant Enfinger, who won in 2013. In addition to no repeat winners, Dillon is the only repeat pole winner. The K&N Pro Series East/ West race at Iowa always has some of the top rising stars in NASCAR. Todd Gilliland was in the 2017 NASCAR Next class and won back-toback K&N Pro Series races at Newton in 2016 and 2017. He is driving in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this season. SCAR Next — spotlights the best and brightest young stars in racing.
