Speaking of spring, a certain furry friend will be hopping into Lake Carroll. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for the lake’s Easter egg hunt at 9 a.m. at Plumtree Lodge. There’ll be two hunts: Littles, for ages 6 and under, will be in front of the Lodge; the Bigs, for ages 7 and up, will be behind The Lodge. The event will be held rain or shine.

It won’t be long before spring will be bouncing back from its long winter’s nap (March 20, for those who are counting down the days) and that means it’s time to start planning for some fun in the sun. The Lake Carroll calendar is already filling up with things to do — organizers are setting up camps, giving the Easter Bunny a call, and getting ready to get in the swim of things — and they’re inviting residents to join them. Another camp is in the works, this one in the summer. The Kids Summer Camps for ages 3 through 12 will kick off in June and run through July. The day camps will feature fun and creative outdoor activities, games, treasure hunts, story telling, crafts and more. Camps will be held at Plumtree Lodge and paired off in two age categories. Camps for ages 3 to 7 will be 9 a.m.-noon, and camps for

Instructor Laura Readdy will help budding young artists tap into their inspiration and let their creativity flow during the Kids Easter Art Camp at The Lodge. Children can choose one of three paintings to create (at left). Three camps will be held: 10-11:30 a.m. for ages 4 to 6, Noon-1:30 p.m. for ages 7 to 9, and 2-3:30 p.m. for ages 10 and up. Get out your goggles and get ready for swim lessons at the Lake Carroll Swimming Pool. Lessons run June through July, but registration opens in April. Lessons will be held June 13-17, June 27-July 1, July 11-15, and July 25-29. Five levels will be taught ... LEVEL 1, GUPPY — Students will learn basic water safety floats, and how to submerge underwater. LEVEL 2, MINNOW — Learn the basics of freestyle/ front crawl, kicking on front and back, and how to get more comfortable underwater and in deep water LEVEL 3, DOLPHIN — Freestyle and backstrokes

will be the main focus of this level, teaching techniques and getting kids comfortable swimming on their own; they’ll also be introduced to diving. LEVEL 4, SHARK — Kids will be introduced to the breaststroke, review the freestyle/backstroke, and will swim 15 yards without stopping. LEVEL 5, ORCA — The highest level, these lessons will have students reviewing the basis of all the strokes in Levels 1-4, and they’ll swim one lap (25 yards) around the pool, using the stroke of their choice. How does the Scholastic Bowl work? Do you come in to a meet with any specific goals in mind? Obviously we want to win, and you can’t have just one person getting all of the questions right. It has to be a team effort. Did you have any particular goals for the season when the year started, and how has it gone so far? The goal is to win, but we want to beat our own records for scoring the most points and getting the most questions correct. It’s not just about the [winloss] record, it’s also about beating teams from previous years, too. We beat last year’s JV point total.

What has been your most memorable Scholastic Bowl moment? Probably this year when I beat the [JV] record for most questions answered in one match. It gave me a lot of motivation to try beat more records, and gave me a more positive attitude. We also set a new [team] record for most questions answered correctly. What’s been the best Scholastic Bowl advice given to you? Scholastic Bowl is something you develop at your own pace. You find a topic that you’re most interested in. Coaches in Scholastic Bowl are a lot different than others — they’re more hands-off but they still give good advice: Make sure you listen to the whole question and not get too jumpy with questions. Are competitive mindsets similar between Scholastic Bowl and running? In each of them, your goal is to beat yourself, beat your own personal records, and just to improve yourself, while also being able to improve your team.

Really, you just go along with your daily life and just remember the stuff that you pick up along the way. Chances are, if you study for one specific thing, there’s a 99 percent chance that it’s not going to show up in the questions because it’s all so random. When I first joined, when I thought I knew something I’d buzz and get it wrong 99 percent of the time. You learn as you go to be more patient; hear the question out until you’re 100 percent for certain you know. Did you know that even before you took part in Scholastic Bowl? My freshman year, I spent a lot of time downloading a lot of random trivia apps on my phone and just grinded through them much of the time. Then I realized this wasn’t helping me any. If you were looking to get more classmates to join the Scholastic Bowl team, how would you convince them? You get to meet a lot of new people from other schools. I’ve met quite a few people from tournaments and events like that. You get new friends, and get to improve yourself as well. You learn a lot of new stuff that you’d never even guessed before. It’s also a good way to get out of the house, too.

t wasn’t that John Lindhorst wasn’t happy with his Station in life. He’d had a decades-long career in education, in roles as choral director and teacher practically from coast to coast — the Chicago area, Dixon, Stillman Valley, San Diego — and beyond, to Hawaii, where his last position there was a six-year stint as coordinator for the Gifted and Talented in Performing Arts Program for the entire Honolulu district. Then, when he retired (well, sort of) he returned to the town where he had run a coffee shop back in the 1980s: Oregon.

There, he bought a former gas station, renovated it, and filled ‘er up with ukuleles in 2015, turning the empty local LE FI M landmark known as V S “The Little Stone Building” into a must-stop shop for lovers of the pint-sized instruments that put a smile on people’s face. It was a business that was born in the U.S.A — that’s Ukulele Station America — and business was good. Word about his shop grew and people from near and far would stop at the quaint little quarry-born building to shop for ukuleles. O

Lindhorst strums a uke in 2019 in front of Ukulele Station America, a former Conoco station built from locally quarried rock in 1931. It closed in 1950 and sat vacant for years before Jeannie’s Beauty Bar moved in for a short time. It sat vacant again for another three decades until Lindhorst rehabbed the building.

Before long, Lindhorst’s love of the merry little music makers that he’d been playing since moving to Hawaii in 1995 landed his shop on the National Association of Music Merchants’ Top 100 Dealer List for 5 years in a row, from 2016 to 2020. Yes, Lindhorst was pretty happy with his Station in life, but he knew that the best was yet to strum; he just needed more space than the 200-and-somesquare-foot stone building where he’d made a home for Ukulele Station America. Lindhorst celebrated the opening of his expanded business in November: a brand new, 2,000 square-foot building that sits just behind Ukulele Station America at 1000 Washington St. Don’t fret though, Lindhorst hasn’t forgotten the gas station that fueled the growth of his business. Ukulele Station America will remain part of his operation, but its new neighbor has turned his one-man band into a veritable orchestra of instruments. Oregon Music Garage’s stock includes acoustic and electric guitars, basses, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, banjo-ukuleles, autoharps, dulcimers, world percussion, music supplies, and more. “It started with Ukulele Station America for six years, and it was so successful, a lot of people started asking, ‘Are you going to sell other things?’” Lindhorst said during the November ribbon-cutting for Oregon Music Garage. “So I decided to expand.” That decision took about 3 years to see the light of day. Lindhorst came up with a design and Rural Renovators in Franklin Grove built it. “Rural Renovators built this above and beyond what it stated out as, and it’s an amazing structure,” Lindhorst said in a 2020 interview. “We get people every day literally coming just to take pictures of the building. They don’t even care what’s in it, they’re just like, ‘Cool building!’” Inside, there’s room for his expanded inventory, and Lindhorst said he plans to expand the music lessons he already offers and even host live music. Though he’s eager to see what the future holds for the shop, it was the past — at least in part — that inspired him to take the next step in his business’ evolution and put down a bigger footprint. When he owned Washington Street Mercantile and Coffee House in Oregon during the ‘80s, he hosted musicians from near and far during live performances and open mic nights. After he returned to town, he’d run into people who remembered the shows and they’d ask him about doing something like that again. He was game, but Ukulele Station America just wasn’t big enough — but Oregon Music Garage is. He also saw a demand for a local music store. “I realized outside of Rockford, all the music stores are gone,” Lindhorst said. “People want to go in and browse. We need a place where people can go and get inspired.” Lindhorst said he’s not trying to be “the guitar store, the banjo store,” but he wants to draw people in who are looking for something a little different. More than just a store he wants his shop to be a place where people can find a world of music, and a place where he can help put that whole world in their hands. They can tap into a talent or discover a new one. Like his website at ukulelestationamerica.com says: “Come visit. We guarantee it will be a fun and amazing experience.” As for Lindhorst’s own experience, he’s got a lot of it. Teacher. Business owner. He’s a singer and songwriter who penned an ode to his beloved uke: “I Want A Ukulele For Christmas.” He’s been active in artistic projects. He founded and directed the Oregon Community Chorus, was on the Autumn On Parade Committee, served as Oregon Chamber of Commerce president, and is president of the community planning group Oregon Together. Not bad for someone who’s been retired for years. “I could never actually stop working,” said Lindhorst — and as far as his customers are concerned, that’s music to their ears.

The ukulele’s popularity has come and gone again and again, but the little instrument that could keeps chugging along. Today, it’s become ubiquitous with Hawaii, where it was first brought in the late 1800s by a Portuguese immigrant who introduced its cousin, the braguinha, to natives there. As the story goes, watching his fingers dance and jump along the tiny frets, they dubbed it the ukulele, which translates to “jumping flea.” By the 1920s, the mainland had also fallen in love with ukulele and Tin Pan Alley artists were churning out Hawaiian-flavored hits. During the Depression, ukuleles were an affordable alternative to pricier instruments and their popularity continued to soar. They’re fortunes rose again in the ‘50s when popular TV host Arthur Godfrey brought the instrument into millions of homes. In the ‘60s, the falsetto tones of Tiny Tim tiptoed up the pop charts when his ukulele-backed version of “Tiptoe through the Tulips” became an unlikely hit. A Hawaiian music revival in the ‘80s and ‘90s helped put the ukulele back in the spotlight. Israel (Iz) Kamakawiwo'ole’s ukulele version of “Over the Rainbow” was featured on TV shows and movies and made his “Facing Future” album a platinum hit. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder recorded a Grammy-winning album of ukulele songs, and former Beatle George Harrison was a huge fan, even writing the introduction to one of ukulele expert Jim Beloff’s songbooks: “Everybody should have and play a uke. It’s so simple to carry with you and it is one instrument you can’t play and not laugh! It’s so sweet and also very old.” Beloff, who also wrote “Uketopia: Adventures in the Ukulele World,” says “there’s something beautiful, stripped down, about a performer with just a small instrument and a quiet voice, something vulnerable and intimate.”

It’s the same place where you can enjoy the great American pastime or enjoy a taste of America’s past at an ice cream parlor. If you answered Freeport, give yourself a pretzel. The second largest city less than an hour from Lake Carroll — after Rockford — Freeport, with just under 24,000 people, offers a little bit of everything: history, sports, culture, food and drink, family fun. The city’s important role in the settlement of the northwest corner of the state makes history a common theme throughout the city. A drive around town will reveal vintage architecture in its homes and business, many that date back close to the mid-1800s. Situated along the Pecatonica River, Freeport’s early development revolved around water power and a network of railroads that set the foundation for even more industry by the late 1800s. The city served as the northern point of the original configuration of the Illinois Central railway, and the original western terminus of the Chicago and North Western railway. When the rails came though, Freeport had enough pull to be a site for one of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates. Food and drink, namely spirits, also played a part in the city’s history, as its many blue collar workers found a time to kick back, relax and socialize over local brew, pretzels and more. That spirit continues to exist today in the bars and restaurants in town, with a couple of breweries not too far outside the city limits. In fact, the city’s nickname — The Pretzel City — comes from the salty treats that pub patrons enjoyed. Today, the city celebrates that past while keeping its feet firmly planted in the future. It’s home to Fortune 500 companies, downtown destinations, an eclectic business community, attractions and more. Several Illinois cities Illinois have a connection to the 15th President — we are the Land of Lincoln, after all — but not all of them hold such a special place in history like Freeport. Abraham Lincoln, then seeking election to the state senate, challenged incumbent Stephen A. Douglas for the seat in 1858, and the two held a series of seven famous debates throughout the state, one of which was held on Freeport, on Aug. 27. The debate would become historic after Douglas — in response to a question from Lincoln about territories’ rights when it came to the issue of slavery — put forward what became known as the The Freeport Doctrine, which in effect said territories could not directly prohibit slavery, but could pass, or not pass, laws that would make it difficult for slavery to exist. He narrowly retained his Senate seat, but his answer angered proponents of slavery, which would ultimately lead to his defeat in the 1860 race for president, putting Lincoln in the White House, and into the history books. The idea of longtime Freeport Cubs fans became a reality in 2008 when they built a small replica of Wrigley Field at the southwest corner of Read Park. Inspired by a similar setup at a sports bar in southwest Wisconsin, much of the old-time Wrigley Field charm is part of the experience: the marquee, scoreboard, the flags on the foul poles, and, yes, the ivy-covered outfield wall. As its name implies, the diamond is used for Little League baseball for the youngest ages. Games typically take place at 6 p.m. nearly every day from late April to early July, with tee ball games during the afternoon in July and August. The field also can be reserved for private baseball parties. The gift shop on site is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays from May to September.

The park also has 18-hole courses for mini golf and disc golf, a small pond where the ducks like to get their feathers wet, a waterfall over a limestone bluff, multi-use trails, and canoe and paddle boat rides from May to August. The Koenig Amphitheater on site is an outdoor band shell that hosts several concert band performances, and even the occasional wedding. If you get there while there’s still snow on the ground, you can enjoy the sledding hills and cross country skiing trails.

Art is a big part of Highland Community College; there’s an entire building devoted to the visual and performing arts. Student and faculty works make up much of the gallery. Students learn to create art through drawing, two- and three-dimensional designs, pottery, graphic design and painting. The college also is holding a juried art exhibition of works from students and community members through March 14.

For its second year, Pretzel Fest will celebrate Freeport’s popular snack with food and fun throughout the day downtown along Chicago Avenue. The event, which coordinator Greater Freeport Partnership looks to make an annual occasion, honors the city’s favorite salty snack with local entertainment, an array of local vendors, food, and, of course, pretzels of all kinds. Last year’s event saw dance performances, yoga and fitness lessons, and a barbecue competition. The pretzel became Freeport’s go-to munchie, after German immigrants brought their love of pretzel snacks to the city during the late 1850s, one of whom opened a pretzel shop that distributed so many pretzels that the local newspaper dubbed Freeport “The Pretzel City.” They became such a popular staple in town that there was a Minor League baseball team during the early 1900s called The Freeport Pretzels, the local high school adopted the pretzel as its mascot, and a number of local businesses make “pretzel” part of their name.

Several local wineries will set up at select downtown businesses to offer their wines, to both casual sippers to experienced oenophiles. The Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau, in partnership with Shaw Media, has launched the tourism brand that’s dedicated to promoting the first leg of Historic Route 66. The First Hundred Miles brand features a mobile-friendly website and suite of social channels dedicated to highlighting all the best attractions, restaurants and events found between Chicago and Pontiac. From the legendary roadside stops that define the Route 66 experience, to the great contemporary amenities and hidden gems that drivers crave, you’ll find there’s something for everyone to do along The First Hundred Miles. Iconic sights such as the towering Gemini Giant statue (located at the recently renovated Launching Pad restaurant in Wilmington) and the World’s Largest Route 66 shield (painted on the wall of Pontiac’s Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum) are just a few of the nostalgic attractions that have been captivating explorers in recent years. The 2020 travel restrictions prompted many people to search for socially distanced, in-state day trips and overnight stays, located near accommodating restaurants and ample lodging options. The First Hundred Miles became a clear destination for travelers with a sense of adventure. The First Hundred Miles website launched as a landing page to start planning trips to throwback travel destinations. On the site, users will find helpful content broken down into five main categories: Play, Stay, Dine, Shop and Maps.

Baltimore St., Wilmington The most iconic and instantly recognizable of the “Muffler Men” statues (one-time ad props for muffler shops) that dot Route 66, the Launching Pad Drive-In’s Gemini Giant is a beloved institution on the Mother Road, and one of the most popular photo destinations in Illinois. Known for the unique spaceage theme and quirky color palette, the Goliath-like figure has been welcoming travelers since the mid-1960s. In 2017, Holly Barker and Tully Garrett purchased the Launching Pad, and pledged to return the iconic sculpture to its former glory. 400 S. West St., Odell While you can’t buy gas at this classic service station (right), you can still pull your car up for a picture celebrating an iconic sight along Route 66. Built in 1932, the now restored Standard Oil Gas Station is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. daily for tours. You’ll also find a great selection of Route 66 merchandise inside. It was almost torn down during the 1990s, until village officials, the Illinois Route 66 Associations, and the state’s Historic Preservation Office, the National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, and Hampton Inn Landmarks teamed up to save it Restored by the Illinois Route 66 Association, the building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. This should be on every motorist’s bucket list as a must-see.

Former Riviera Restaurant

400 E. Mazon St., Gardner Another great photo op, located in the same park as the Two Cell Jail, is the former Riviera Restaurant. Moved there by city officials after a fire in 2010, the Riviera Restaurant once served such notable personalities as Al Capone and his gang. Built in 1906 as a horse-drawn food cart, it eventually was located at 206 N. Center St., where it sat until the blaze. Closed but restored, here is your opportunity to get a peek at one of the oldest standing landmarks along Route 66.

This Route 66 mural was painted in 2006, on the back wall of the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum, at 110 W. Howard St. in Pontiac. The bricks in front of the mural are original Route 66 bricks, and visitors can drive their vehicle in front of the mural for a photo.

Said to have inspired the character Filmore from the classic Pixar film “Cars,” Waldmire was an itinerant artist and conservationist, who could be seen driving his deeply personalized art cars along the Mother Road for many decades. While at the museum, be sure to also grab a photo of his Volkswagen minibus, and read about the history of this local legend who delighted the world with his art and love of Route 66.

As cars became more commonplace, legislation for public highways first appeared in 1916 but it wasn’t until Congress passed comprehensive legislation in 1925 that the government executed its plan for national highway construction. The numerical designation 66 was assigned to the Chicago-to-Los Angeles route in the summer of 1926. With that designation came its place as one of the nation’s principal east-west arteries. From the outset, public road planners intended U.S. 66 to connect the main streets of rural and urban communities along its course for the most practical of reasons: Most small towns had no prior access to a major national thoroughfare. Stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles, Route 66, also known as the “Mother Road” and the “Main Street of America,” was one of the country’s major thoroughfares for nearly half a century. It became one of the most famous roads in America, popularized in culture through books, songs, music (“Get Your Kicks on Route 66”), magazines, movies, and TV shows (“Route 66”). During the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, Route 66 was the primary route for the migration of farm workers from the Midwest to the East Coast. The highway was featured in John Steinbeck’s classic 1939 novel, “The Grapes of Wrath” and the 1940 motion picture adaptation, which features the Joad family traveling west on Route 66 from Oklahoma to California. The migration continued during World War II due to opportunities in California. During this time, it also became one of the key routes for moving military equipment across the country. Due to the efforts of the

U.S. Highway 66 Association, Route 66 became the first highway to be completely paved in 1938. In the 1950s, Route 66 became the main highway for vacationers heading to Los Angeles. The traffic along Route 66 also resulted in the opening of many mom-and-pop establishments, such as restaurants, motels, and gas stations, to service the needs of travelers. Route 66 captured the imagination of generations of Americans like no highway did before, and the many sights and roadside attractions along the route became an important part of the tourism experience of “getting your kicks on” Route 66. There were neon signs, one-of-a-kind tourist stops, burger stands and drive-ins, myriad miniature oases waiting to capture motorists’ imagination and money, and there were miles and miles of open road — 2,200 of them — waiting to be explored. The construction of the Interstate Highway System resulted in the eventual decline of Route 66, and many of its roadside attractions went the way of tail fins and chrome bumpers, but recent years have seen a resurgence in the route’s popularity, and some of those bygone businesses have found new owners and new life. Portions of the road have now been designated as National Scenic Byways or as “Historic Route 66” in several states including Arizona, New Mexico, Illinois, and Missouri. Gone fishin’

Readers responded to Lake Lifestyle writer Cody’s Cutter’s recent request to share some of their fond fishing memories, and we’re happy to share them with you this month ... Lake Carroll’s Erin Guth shared this photo of her son, Jay, who’s hooked on fishing. Said Erin: “He’s 13 and absolutely obsessed with fishing — particularly Muskie fishing. It took him 7 years, but he finally hooked one this summer! The problem was he was by himself and wasn’t prepared to land him. Our neighbor, Stan Gibson, realized what was happening and jumped into his boat, crossed the cove and lent his net to help land Jay’s dream fish. Stan even took Jay’s picture with it, because — as you know — if you didn’t get a picture it didn’t really happen. When we got back from tubing with his siblings and their friends, he was waiting on the dock with an ear-to-ear grin and an amazing story to tell. He hasn’t stopped smiling since.” Erin said she’s glad she could share Jay’s feel-good fish tale, especially when it seems like there’s so much bad news in the world: “Stan went out of his way to help a fellow fisherman and made a little boy’s day (and week/month/year/lifetime) in the process. There are still plenty of good people out there who do really good things.”
