s any new parent can testify, adding children to a marriage can present immediate challenges demanding accommodation in your way of life. A newborn, for instance, may require adults who formerly believed it impossible to function in modern life without eight hours of sleep, proper nutrition and regular showers to find ways to get by.

This doesn’t mean we pretend we never disagree. Even an intense disagreement, provided it doesn’t go over the line, can produce opportunities to model forgiveness, reconciliation, grace and compromise.

her, that’s meant baseball games, the symphony orchestra, sci-fi movies and TV, and even whitewater rafting (she won’t budge on the skydiving yet, though.) Through it all, we hope our young ones use their powers of super-absorption to take in a proper mindset for the moment their significant other enters, stage right, and mom and dad become plot devices in their narrative. We hope they not only have heard, but can see, how their significant other is supposed to treat them – and how they are supposed to treat their partners – to note the best romance springs out of a bed lined with love, laughter, grace and conciliation. And we hope they find someone who also shares a passion for sharing experiences together – even if it may mean jumping together out of a perfectly good airplane.

ach day we are bombarded with heaping helpings of health headlines - the latest, must-know, must-do health advice. Sometimes the tips seem obvious; but often, it’s quite difficult to understand what will produce health benefits - especially when headlines and social media can make legitimate advice seem irrelevant in a moment.
Over the years, we’ve seen more conflicting advice around omega-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA). Thousands of published scientific studies have shown the benefits, and we know that the human body needs them to function but can’t create them on its own. Among their numerous benefits, EPA and DHA have been associated with overall heart health and improving eye, brain and joint performance. Most people remain confused. Unlike many other important measures of health, most people have no awareness of their omega-3 levels. Omega-3s are found in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel. But the reality
is, many people have difficulty achieving optimal levels with diet alone. And according to one recent study, even among people who believed they were eating a balanced diet, 98 percent had levels of omega-3s that were below the optimal level.

SNOWSHOE CURIOSITY IN THE COLORADO BACKCOUNTRY STORY AND PHOTO BY PETER STADALSKY
Work and school shut down between Christmas and New Years, so I tossed a duffel bag of clothes, snow boots, snowshoes and a snowboard in the back of the truck and headed west. I’ve been a snowboarder for 17 years and still hadn’t carved any Rocky Mountain powder. What I found interesting when I got to Colorado was that while many people buy lift tickets and get carried up the mountain to ride down, many people hike up non-resort claimed mountains and take the path less traveled. This was the path I sought. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Getting a lift ticket and riding the iconic ski resorts is one option out west - and it’s a great one, too. I drove out to Snowmass Mountain next to Aspen and spent a day on some of the best runs I’ve ever have rode. But there are other ways to enjoy all that snow, and at a significantly lower cost. A few common ways you can traverse snow trails and find a backcountry ride down is by snowshoe, skins, or splitboards. Snowshoes provide flotation in powdery snow so you don’t sink every step in the snow like a pole into mud. Ski skins lay along the bottom of your skis are prevent you from sliding backwards while climbing uphill. And a splitboard is a snowboard that splits longways, essentially into skis, and can be equipped with skins as well. I already had snowshoes, so I secured my snowboard to my back and trekked up the mountain. I met up with a cousin and set out from the trailhead to Mayflower Gulch. The path takes you on an old, two-mile long mining road back to the gulch. You follow the snaking trail through tall evergreens until the tree line abruptly ends and opens up to a semi-circle of bare rock mountains against a bluebird sky. The steep bowl formed in the center of the mountains is the gulch. On your way into the gulch there are some dilapidated cabins, most with only two or three walls left; the last remnants of lost dreams striking

gold during the western rush. After passing the cabins I had to slap on the snowshoes. The snow bowl is around 12,000 feet elevation and my origins of living at practically sea level were starting to show. Just tying my boots in the parking lot had me out of breath. We trudged through the deep snow for a good half hour before hitting the highpoint in the gulch. By this time, all the other skiers and hikers had cleared out and the sound of silence overtook the valley. I breathed in the still, cold air and took in the panorama of peaks surrounding me in every direction. Blankets of white covered nearly every surface, save some green trees poking through the snow like carrots waiting to be picked. If it weren’t 15 degrees I probably would have snuck in a quick nap. Finally we bound our feet to our boards and dropped into the bowl’s fresh powder. Having an entire mountain of snow to yourself is like striking a snow day as a child, finding out you don’t actually have to be trapped in school all day, but rather will be building igloos and having snowball fights. No matter how you wish to experience adventure it’s all about exploring one’s curiosity and finding ways to feel like a kid again.

he 4th Quarter of 2018 was a painful one for most investors as major market indices declined precipitously resulting in the first negative calendar year returns that we’ve seen since the financial crisis. You may have heard that we have been in a bull market which had gotten “long in the tooth” and in fact to find our last bear market you would have to go back to the period from October 2007 to March of 2009. Since it has been a while since we’ve seen these kinds of markets it is probably a good time to revisit some important classifications as well as to be reminded of some market-cycle perspectives.

First, a few quick definitions: BEAR MARKET: a bear market occurs when securities prices fall 20 percent or more from recent highs. The term comes from a bear’s method of attacking its prey in which it swipes its paws downward. BULL MARKET: a bull market is one in which securities prices are rising and anticipated to continue to do so. This moniker of this state of market optimism comes from a bull’s method of attacking, in which it thrusts its horns upwards into the air. CORRECTION: it is not unusual during a bull market to have the market pull-back or correct. Market corrections differ from a bear market as they are less severe and are short-term, typically lasting less than two months. As this article is written well ahead of the publishing date, I have no idea at what point of the cycle the markets will be in when you read this. What I do know is that the recent market pull-back and volatility have reminded many of us of the realities of investing. In order to position for potential greater reward there is very real risk that a portfolio takes on. While it is always more fun to see one’s investments grow rather than contract, as the graph below shows historically investors have been rewarded for taking on calculated risk.
Although past performance is no guarantee of future results, it is worth noting that historically, investing in the U.S. stock market has rewarded patient investors. Odds are in your favor if you have the patience to allow the markets to work for you. If historical figures are cold comfort and you are still feeling anxious about your portfolio, you owe it to yourself to schedule a meeting with your financial advisor to review your risk tolerance relative to your current asset allocation. It is not uncommon to find that one’s appetite for risk may not be what it was once thought to be, and if that is the case for you a strategy for moving to a more conservative portfolio should be examined. If after your consultation you are still uneasy or if you are currently investing on your own without the benefit of the counsel of a seasoned industry veteran, seek a second opinion.
