IVCC to host free workshop helping students complete FAFSA

Illinois Valley Community College will hold a free workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to help students and families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, the college said in a news release.

The drop-in session runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Academic Support Center, room A201, on the IVCC campus.

High school seniors, current college students, and their families are invited to get one-on-one assistance with the FAFSA form. Attendees should bring their 2024 tax information, Federal Student Aid IDs for both student and parent, and any records of untaxed income.

“The FAFSA can feel intimidating, but we are here to make it as smooth as possible,” IVCC Director of Financial Aid Isamar Taylor said in a news release. Participants will receive an IVCC Bookstore gift card while supplies last.

Taylor urged families to complete the FAFSA early, even if they are unsure about applying for aid.

The form is essential to qualify for federal and state grants, IVCC scholarships and some campus jobs.

“Starting the FAFSA process early helps students secure the most funding and plan their education with confidence,” Taylor said.

This year, changes to Pell Grant eligibility aim to better support students with the greatest financial need.

New rules for small family-owned businesses and farms also may help more middle-income families qualify for aid, according to the release.

The FAFSA process has been simplified for parents and spouses.

Taylor recommends that students and parents each create their own Federal Student Aid ID and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to speed processing.

Award notifications will be sent in the spring.

Princeton native Keegan Fogarty launches his own company

Keegan Fogarty didn’t come to the University of Iowa to start a business. But a connection with the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) early in his college journey sparked a passion that has shaped his Hawkeye experience and put him on a path to launching a company of his own.

The Princeton native is a senior mechanical engineering major on track to earn a bachelor’s degree in 2026 and a master’s the following year. Fogarty is also building a company – General Robotics – that could redefine how small and mid-size manufacturers approach automation.

“Basically, we’re developing simulation software that allows engineers to upload a 3D model of their assembly line, drop in a robot, and tell it what to do,” Fogarty said. “But the real kicker? The software will ideally write the program for the entire assembly line.”

It’s a product born from experience. Fogarty interned three summers at LCN, a small manufacturer in his hometown that builds door closers. He saw firsthand how automation could help – but also how

neering – are empowered to launch and grow their own ventures. In fact, more non-business majors are encouraged to seek assistance from Iowa JPEC.

Fogarty has been building companies nearly as long as he’s been building robots. His first startup, Solace Biotech, was launched in high school with friends. That’s how he discovered Iowa JPEC –through its Startup Incubator program.

He has since participated in multiple Iowa JPEC programs, including IdeaStorm and Innovation Challenge, using each to refine his pitch. Fogarty won $10,000 at the spring undergraduate Innovation Challenge on April 30.

“Iowa JPEC has taught me how to build a foundation and how to start a company,” Fogarty said.

strategy. “I just want to build stuff and hand it to people,” he said. “But Iowa JPEC taught me you have to make sure you’re building what people actually want.”

Now, with General Robotics gaining momentum, Fogarty is working on an alpha version of the software and speaking with potential users – engineers, engineering managers, and plant managers. “The engineer has to want to use it. The manager has to want to buy it,” he said. “I’m focused on both.”

Fogarty knows he can’t do it alone. “I’ll need help on the business side, with finances and strategy,” he said. “And I’ll need other engineers – especially people experienced in programming and AI.”

daunting it was for companies without dedicated robotics teams. “This isn’t about taking jobs,” he said. “It’s about changing jobs.”

At the University of Iowa, innovation isn’t limited by major. Through the resources and support of Iowa JPEC, students from all disciplines – including engi-

If you think business jargon might be a barrier for a mechanical engineer, Fogarty proves otherwise. “Everyone at Iowa JPEC has been helpful,” he said. “If I don’t understand something, I just ask. That’s been key.”

And the results speak for themselves. Fogarty credits Iowa JPEC with helping him think beyond the engineering – customer discovery, market fit, long-term

Still, this is his wheelhouse. He’s been mechanically inclined since childhood, building Lego sets with his dad and bringing robots to Show and Tell in seventh grade.

“I know other engineers have ideas, too,” he said. “They just might not know what Iowa JPEC can do for them.”

If Fogarty has his way, that’s going to change – one robot, and one company, at a time.

Bureau Valley School board holds October 2025 meeting

The Bureau Valley School District 340 Board of Education met in regular session on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the district office in Manlius.

The district recently completed a state audit of its Pre-K program for the 2024–25 school year. Bureau Valley retained its Gold status, a mark of program excellence that other districts often seek to emulate.

The audit covered all aspects of the program, including classroom instruction and playground safety. District staff work diligently to ensure every child starts school with a strong foundation. No public comment was made.

BVHS Principal Duane Price presented information about the Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy, a new opportunity for students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language. The seal, awarded based on ACT scores and additional assessments like STAMP, can earn students college credit toward foreign language requirements. BVHS Athletic Director Philip Przybyla congratulated Wyatt Novotney on winning the IHSA Class 1A State Golf Championship.

The board approved the following:

• Minutes from the Sept. 23 meeting

• Activity account reports

• Monthly financial and treasurer’s reports

• Bills totaling $2,271,162.26 and payroll of $931,034.58

• Addition of a BVHS activity fund account for the Class of 2029

• Multiple construction bid packages for gymnasium, classroom and weight room projects from Knapp Concrete Contractors, Titan Industries, and DuKane

Precast Inc., totaling about $1.9 million for site work, concrete, steel, and precast walls

• The 2025 tentative tax levy

• Employment of new sponsors and coaches for the 2026–27 school year

Chris Tyra of Midwest Construction Professionals and Andrew Macklin of Larson Darby Group outlined the bid process for the district’s gymnasium and classroom additions and weight room expansion. Tyra said bidding the entire project at once allows the district to benefit from economies of scale and avoid higher costs from rebidding later. The total bid amount is $8.19 million, with contingencies and potential value engineering options to reduce costs.

Board members discussed project details, including the impact on parking and future maintenance costs. The weight room expansion will accommodate growing enrollment in fitness classes and allow junior high students access.

Superintendent Jason Stabler presented the tentative tax levy, noting the district’s estimated assessed valuation has increased. The levy increase is under 5%, so a Truth in Taxation hearing is not currently required, but may be advertised as a precaution.

The district’s current fund balance is $27.4 million, with much reserved for the building project. Stabler emphasized the district’s careful financial management amid declining state and federal funding.

Stabler also reported that the district received occupancy approval for the new greenhouse.

Demolition of the former Manlius Elementary building has begun, with Trinity Lutheran Church hosting the Manlius bus stop during construction.

FOOTBALL: ROCKRIDGE 48, HALL-PUTNAM COUNTY 21

Hall-PC can’t overcome early deficit in loss to No. 1 Rockridge

Turning the ball over at any level can make things tough.

Against Class 2A No. 1-ranked and undefeated Rockridge, it will kill any chance of pulling off an upset.

That was the case Friday in Spring Valley as the Rockets defeated the Hall-Putnam County 48-21 in the regular season finale.

The Rockets flexed their muscles right off the bat on the opening drive.

After an offsides on Hall gave the Rockets a first down, Thomas Sowards picked up 13 yards.

Cullen Schwigen threw a 27-yard completion to Wyatt Osborn before Sowards picked up another 15 yards. That led to a 4-yard touchdown pass to Owen Steele to put the Rockets ahead 7-0.

On Hall’s opening possession, Aiden Redcliff had a big gain, but was called back on a holding penalty, but followed that with a 20-yard run on third-and-19.

But on third-and-12 Chase Wheatley intercepted a pass to set up the Rockets.

The Red Devils initial defense was solid, but on fourth-and-7, Schwigen found Owen Steele for 22 yards and then on first-and-goal Schwigen hit Liam Steele for a 4-yard touchdown.

On Hall’s next drive, Redcliff broke a 45-yard run to set up first-and-goal, but on the next play, Redcliff fumbled into the end zone where Rockridge recovered.

The Rockets capitalized, using a 39-yard run by Sowards and a 17-yard pass and 14-yard run by Schwigen to set up a 3-yard TD by Sowards for a 21-0 lead.

“It’s like any game,” Hall coach Nick Sterling said. “Any team knows you can’t have turnovers and then points off of them and it’s even worse, so we kind of put ourselves in a hole in the first half.”

Hall was unable to do much on the next possession and turned the ball over on downs, but the defense got a big interception from Jaxson Pinter.

The Red Devils didn’t waste any time as Braden Curran bounced outside and down the near sideline for a 49-yard touchdown run.

The Rockets answered soon though as Tanner Dye started things off with an 11-yard run. Schwingen then hit Owen Steele for 16 yards.

Dye had two runs of 8-yards with the second one going for a TD.

The turnover bug got the Red Devils again as Curran was picked off on the very next play by Wheatley, who returned it to the Hall 9-yard line and Sowards scored from 8 yards out and the Rockets led 35-6 at halftime.

Hall came out a different team in the second half and began with a drive that lasted almost 11 minutes.

On third-and-5, Redcliff ran for a 6-yard gain to keep the drive going. Curran kept the drive alive with an 8-yard run on third-and-7.

On fourth-and-3, Curran connected with Hunter Edgcomb for 6 yards. But on the next two plays, Hall was called for a

face mask and a blindside block to make it first-and-36.

Curran threw a 17-yard completion to Redcliff and followed with a 24-yard pass to Chace Sterling for the first down.

Curran was sacked on the next play, but on fourth-and-12 Curran connected with Sterling for a 28-yard TD to cut the deficit to 35-14. Rockridge responded on its next with a 24-yard TD run by Sowards for a 41-14 lead.

But the Red Devils did not quit as the Curran-Sterling connection started to get hot. The two hooked up for 38 and 39 yards to start the drive and later connected for a 16-yard TD to make it 41-21.

“Hall played outstanding in the second half,” Rockridge coach Sam Graves said. “They did some things that we didn’t see on film and I tell you if not for a couple injuries this is a playoff team. I mean this kid (Curran) comes in just a

couple games ago at quarterback and was impressive.”

“I played with these 18 seniors for four years,” Braden Curran said. “It would have been awesome to beat the No. 1 team in 2A, but the effort was amazing. We have had three coaches in four years and we are trying to turn things around and I think we are off to a good start.”

Redcliff led Hall with 97 yards on 12 carries, while Curran had 84 and a TD on 13 carries and also completed 12-of-23 passes for 217 yards and a pair of TD’s. Sterling had five receptions for 145 yards and two TDs.

Sowards led the Rockets with 134 yards and three scores on 15 carries while Dye added 93 yards and a TD on 11 carries.

Hall finishes 3-6 while Rockridge goes to 9-0 for the first round of playoffs this weekend.
