Drinking alcohol can increase someone’s risk of cancer in many ways. When the body breaks down the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, it produces a toxic chemical that damages DNA and proteins. Heavy alcohol use can cause genetic mutations, impair tumor suppression and limit the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from foods that help protect against cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research developed the Continuous Update Project to review and publish evidence of the effect of diet, nutrition and physical activity on cancer risk and survival. Their first CUP report was published in 1997, with subsequent

reports coming out every 10 years. The first report confirmed a link between alcohol consumption and increased risk for several cancers, including the mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, breast, colorectal and liver. In each of the reports that followed, the number of cancers for which alcohol consumption increases risk has expanded. The last CUP report, published in 2017, identified at least 13 cancers for which there is now evidence of increased risk attributable to alcohol consumption. Speaking of CUPs, women should understand that being “in your cups” can affect what’s in your “cups.” Alcohol consumption can raise estrogen levels, which elevates the risk of breast cancer. Also of note, the incidence of early-onset breast cancer, diagnosed in women younger than age 40, has been increasing. A recent study showed a distinct correlation between binge drinking and increased risk of early-on-

set breast cancer. A recent study suggested that rates of binge drinking among both men and women were increasing, with women experiencing steeper increases than men. Binge drinking is defined by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as a pattern of drinking that brings blood-alcohol concentration to 0.08% or higher. For a typical woman, this corresponds to consuming four or more drinks in about two hours. Alcohol-related cancer deaths are on the rise, almost doubling between 1990 and 2020. Even moderate alcohol consumption, defined as one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, can increase our risk for some cancers. More of us should be aware of this, and further aware of the increased risk of the occasional binge.

child reviewed for bone and joint development. If your child has feet pointing inward or outward or complains of foot pain, they can be seen at this clinic. There is no charge for any services at this clinic. The Elks will provide financial assistance to the best of their ability for children needing further treatment or specialty equipment when the family lacks sufficient resources. In the past, the Elks have purchased therapy services, corrective shoes, braces, wheelchairs and augmentative communication devices to help children overcome a variety of physical challenges.

The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, passed by the U.S. House on Dec. 15 and the Senate in November, would overturn the USDA’s 2012 restrictions that have limited schools to providing only flavored and unflavored, low fat, fat-free and lactose-free milk. The legislation would help revitalize an industry that has steadily lost market share and reconnect children to the benefits and taste of milk. Agriculture groups, including Illinois Farm Bureau, have supported the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids legislation. “This is a significant win for Illinois dairy farmers and, most importantly, for school children,” IFB President Philip Nelson said. “With passage of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, students will once again have access to a fortified, nutritious whole milk option at school, supporting healthy growth and development. This is an initiative we have worked toward for years, and we are grateful to see strong bipartisan support in Congress.” The legislation would amend the National School Lunch Program to exclude milk fat from calculations of saturated fat in school meals and let students receive non-dairy beverages such as soy milk without a doctor’s note. “It’s also important to remember this legislation does not require any student to drink or any school to serve whole

It required school meals to include more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, protein and low-fat dairy and less sugar, sodium and fat. Starting in 2012, whole and 2% milk were not permitted in school meals because those prod-

ucts are higher in saturated fat and calories than lower-fat options. “Once the bill is signed, the USDA, through its Food and Nutrition Service, will issue updated guidance and regulations that reflect the new statutory authority,” AFBF Economist Danny Munch said earlier this month. “Individual school districts will then decide if and when to offer whole milk or 2% milk in their cafeteria menus. Many school districts adjust those menus between semesters or on an annual cycle, so adoption could occur within the start of the new year or months later when they set up for

next year.” Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins said the legislation is a significant step forward in strengthening school nutrition and supporting America’s dairy farmers, and “is more than a policy change; it’s a practical tool for promoting health nationwide and ensuring that America’s next generation thrives.”

Livestock prices favorable; risk management remains key By RHIANNON BRANCH FarmWeek Livestock markets in 2025 have been more favorable than in recent years compared with crop markets, but a high price environment does not mean producers should ease up on risk management. Brittney Goodrich, assistant professor of ag economics at the University of Illinois, points to the cattle industry where several years of drought have drastically cut domestic beef supplies and border closures due to New World Screwworm have interfered with imports, pushing prices higher. “During this last year, we haven’t decreased the herd size as much as we had previously. We’ve also not slaughtered as high of a percentage of cows and

heifers as we had in previous years. So there may be some modest indications that we’re starting to think about expansion, but it’s going to be slow,” Goodrich told FarmWeek. “USDA projects no real significant expansion until between 2026 and 2027. Then we might start to see herd sizes increase, which would put downward pressure on feeder and fed cattle prices.” USDA reported an estimated 11.7 million head of cattle on feed as of Dec. 1, down 2% from last year. Placements in feedlots (1.6 million head) declined 11% while marketings of fed cattle (1.52 million head) were down 12% from a year ago. Despite slow progress to rebuild the U.S. cattle herd, beef markets experienced some downward price movements this year and recently fell from the peaks

seen in September. “I think that was just a seasonal thing that we kind of expected to happen. It was just much more drastic than we’re used to seeing,” Goodrich said. “But that’s kind of highlighting that even in these relatively good times, there can be huge price swings that we need to be prepared for.” Goodrich said all livestock producers should keep in mind that even in times of high prices there is downside price risk. “Things like knowing your cost of production and hedging – if you’re large enough in futures and options markets – can be good tools to use,” she said. “There’s also a relatively new risk management tool provided by USDA that is basically a subsidized option for hogs, feeder cattle and fed cattle. Folks can use that to protect against some of that down-

side price movement if they’re not big enough to be a player in the futures and options markets.” Livestock producers should continue to monitor the situation with New World Screwworm into 2026. “If they open live cattle imports back up from Mexico, that may put some downward pressure on our beef prices here in the U.S., particularly on the feeder and fed cattle side,” she said. Goodrich shared her livestock market outlook during the Illinois Farm Economics Summits held in DeKalb, Peoria and Mt. Vernon on Dec. 16 and 17.

Illinois praises judge’s order to restore school mental health grants By JUDY HARVEY jharvey@shawmedia.com A federal judge ruled that the U.S. Department of Education acted unlawfully by abruptly discontinuing grants to fund extra mental health professionals in K-12 schools, the Office of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said. Raoul and a coalition of 16 attorneys general filed a lawsuit in July arguing that the education department violated the Administrative Procedure Act when it told grantees in April that it would discontinue the mental health grants program because it conflicted with the

Trump administration’s new priorities, the announcement from Raoul’s office said. As part of the decision, the two sides will meet and agree on a timeline for the department Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul t o m a k e l a w f u l grant continuation decisions, the attorney general’s office said. “I applaud this ruling that ensures mental health professionals stay in

schools in Illinois and across the country,” Raoul said in the statement announcing the ruling. “These services not only support our students, but they keep our schools and communities safe. I will continue to stand beside my colleagues to oppose illegal actions that directly impact our communities.” After the deaths of 19 students and two teachers during a 2023 mass school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Congress appropriated $1 billion to permanently bring 14,000 mental health professionals into the schools that needed them most. Since then, the National Association of School Psychologists, reported that grant-

ees served almost 775,000 students and hired about 1,300 school mental health professionals during the first year of funding, the attorney general’s office said. The Department of Education attempted to discontinue the grants that provided ”essential services” from schoolbased mental health professionals for countless students throughout Illinois, Raoul’s office said. Illinois joined California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington and Wisconsin in filing the lawsuit.

Illinois winter heat disconnection rule now in effect By JUDY HARVEY jharvey@shawmedia.com The Illinois Commerce Commission is reminding customers that the state’s winter weather rule is in effect now through March 31. The winter weather rule limits utilities from disconnecting eligible customers who use electric or gas as their primary source of home heating. “Illinois winters are known for frigid temperatures and frequent snowfall,” ICC Chairman Doug Scott said in a news release from his office. “The winter weather rule protects customers who might otherwise struggle to stay warm during the coldest months of the year.” The winter weather rule protects residential customers from disconnections when temperatures are forecast at or below 32 degrees, and on days preceding holidays and weekends when the temperature is expected to drop to freezing, according to the release. Koltin Swaim led Morrison with 19 points and Brayden Rubright had 12 in the loss. Newman led 42-21 at halftime as four players were in double figures. Evan Bushman scored 15 points and Asher Ernst and George Jungerman each added 12. John Rowzee scored 10 for the Comets (13-0). The Mustangs fell to 2-8.

Boys basketball West Carroll 58, Morrison 55:

The Mustangs fell short after the Thunder’s 18-14 run in the fourth quarter. Rubright led Morrison with 21 points and Swaim had 16.

Orion 95, Morrison 40:

Orion stormed to a 60-15

halftime lead in the setback. Rubright had 15 points and Charles Pruis added 10 for the Mustangs.

Kewanee 59, Fulton 45:

Landen Leu led Fulton with 19 points in the setback at the Erie tournament. Riverdale 72, Fulton 52: Leu led the Steamers (3-8) with 17 points in a second tournament loss.

Girls basketball Bureau Valley 50, Morrison 22: The Fillies fell to 0-14

after trailing 24-5 after the first quarter. Emily Wright led BV with 12 points. E-P wins two: The Panthers beat Morrison 51-21 and Bureau Valley 43-27 in their home tournament. E-P improved to 7-5 for the season. Fulton splits two: T h e Steamers (7-4) beat Monmouth-Roseville 52-35 and fell to Kewanee 47-32 at the Fulton’s Landen Leu takes a shot in a recent game.
