Erie volunteer EMT marks 48 years of service

The Erie Fire Protection District has expanded its ambulance services over the years and one volunteer has seen it all.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Jeff Wirth joined the department 48 years ago, on July 1, 1977, because “they were looking for people on the ambulance service” that “had only been running since the fall of 1976,” Wirth said.

“We have a good relationship between fire and ambulance. I enjoy doing it. That’s why I’ve been there that long,” Wirth said.

Wirth said the one call that sticks out to him the most is a house fire in 1979.

“The Bealer fire. They always called it,” he said. “I was a new EMT at that time, just graduated.”

In December that year, a fire erupted at 1003 Main St. in Erie, killing four members of the Bealer family – Warren E. Bealer Jr., 38; Patricia Bealer, 36; Elizabeth Bealer, 13; and Bernard Bealer, 5. The fifth member, Warren Bealer III, 15, survived but was badly burned, according to newspaper records.

The parents, Warren and Patricia, were at a Christmas party set up at their work, came home and died in the fire, Wirth said.

Firefighters that day used four water hoses to fight the flames and had to crawl on the floor wearing respirators to find the Bealers because the house was filled with smoke, according to newspaper records.

Being on the frontlines of those types of tragedies, “you ‘just suck it up, buttercup’ because somebody’s got to do it and you do it,” Wirth said.

“The biggest thing that I always have a hard time with is dealing with kids, because I had kids at home. So I would go home and hug my kids after a call with a young child,” he said.

Since then, the ambulance service has undergone a lot of changes.

“We went from basic to first aid to EMTs and then advanced EMTs and now we’ve got paramedics,” Wirth said.

Now the service has paid paramedics that are on 24 hours a day, Wirth said.

“You can never go backwards, you always want to go up,” he said of working to become a better service. “You can’t go from paramedic back down to a lower service.”

service, Wirth said. “They all praise us for the kind of service that we give them.”

To keep it up, they have to keep bringing on new people, he said.

The fire department side has “a waiting list most of the time,” and the ambulance service has “good numbers. It’s just that we’re always looking for more,” Wirth said.

1985: School year begins at Fulton High admid summer repairs

60 years

August 18, 1965

Five new teachers will be joining the faculty at Fulton Community High School. Their assignments are Mr. Brown, business education and social studies; Mr. George, instrumental music; Mr. Vogel, mathematics and science; Mrs. Miltner and Mrs. Yellman, English.

Vernon Krahn assumed his duties as Chief of Police succeeding John Voss, who resigned effective August 1. Mr. Krahn, a native of Savanna, comes to Fulton from California, where he had been working as an electrician for the past year. For many years before that he had been engaged in police work in the Chicago area.

50 years

August 20, 1975

Fulton Community Fund board members rejected a plan, by a four to five vote, to join with Clinton’s United Fund to form an organization called “Gateway United Fund.” Under the plan accepted, Fulton will run their campaign independently of Clinton and all funds will stay in Fulton, with the exception of a few civic organizations in Clinton, which are used frequently by Fulton residents.

Seven young ladies entered the competition for the title of Miss Flame of the Albany Fire Protection District. Contestants include Belinda Jordan, Cathy Bronkema, Jill Gooch, Lois Nichols, Cindy Ammon, Cathy Ziegler and Belinda Gonz.

August 21, 1985

Repairs to the Fulton High School building will not be completed in time for the opening of school, but only the gymnasium will not be ready for use, it was reported of the River Bend Board of Education. School officials hope that leaks in the gymnasium roof may be repaired shortly. Final work on the gymnasium floor also has been suspended until the leaks are repaired.

Marcella Waack, owner of a new business that opened for business at the River City Mall, stands by a display of clothing that is being offered by the business. The new business is the Maternity and Baby Boutique that will feature maternity clothing and infant through toddler clothes.

August 16, 1995

Shelly Baker and Bethany Jordan, the new owners of Words of Wisdom Christian Bookstore, have announced their Grand Opening Celebration. The store is located at 1004 Fourth Street. They will be giving away over a thousand dollars in prizes through drawings and free gifts with purchase.

City of Fulton explained that from July 25 to August 7 the water supply in a portion of the city’s water was contaminated with coliform bacteria. When the Aug. 7 samples were taken and sent to EPA in Springfield, contaminants were not present in the samples. It is believed that the method of taking the sample was flawed and not the water itself.

One huge motorized claw began destroying the old J.T. Cullen manufacturing plant on Sixteenth Avenue. Before the day ended a huge portion of the brick and cinder block building was down on the ground. The site is now owned by the City of Fulton, which plans to use the area bordered by Illinois Rt. 84 for Fulton improvements.

The first item on the City Council agenda was an ordinance adding territory to the Whiteside County Enterprise Zone. The ordinance was approved by the Council members. Second item was an agreement between the City of Fulton and Gary Milnes for condominium construction at the former coal fields behind Kelly’s Food Mart. The City of Fulton agreed to allow for the construction of 17 new condos in that area.

Fulton Fire/EMS would like to thank the Illowa Thrift Store for a recent $500 donation for the purchase of an FMx extractor, a special tool used for quick removal of a facemask from football and other helmets. The Sterling Newman Athletic Director held a training seminar at Fulton Fire Department on its use.

At the meeting of the City Council, aldermen voted to approve a resolution to dedicate and name the new public park in Fulton’s Third Ward as “Neighborhood Community Park” to commemorate the outpouring of donations and support from the Fulton community.

School in Chicago on June 23, 1942. At 18, Ken joined the 2nd Marines Aircraft Wing. At 20, he held the rank of Master Technical Sergeant.

Ken served in the Marines from July 1942 until his honorable discharge on November 23, 1945. He earned the following medals: Good Conduct, Sharpshooter, and Asian-Pacific Campaign.

Ken married Marilyn Lois (Rufolo) on December 7, 1946. Ken and Marilyn had three children: Karen Margaret (Pifke) Asta Crossman of Prophetstown IL, Kristine Louise (Pifke) Burke-Bielema, wife of Bart J. Bielema of Lyndon IL, and Kenneth Michael Pifke (deceased 1989).

Ken was a tool and die maker in the Chicago area for over 40 years. Ken and Marilyn retired to the Prophetstown Illinois area in 1988; they thoroughly enjoyed their retirement.

Ruth Ann is survived by her husband, James, and their four sons: Brad Sibley (Katie) of Dixon, IL; Scott Sibley (Dionne) of Bettendorf, IA; Jesse Sibley (Shelly) of Coal Valley, IL; and Josh Sibley (Haley) of Prophetstown, IL. She was a proud grandmother to 13 grandchildren — Brady Sibley, Jacob Sibley, Hunter Gehrt, Landon Knigge, Lauren Sibley, Erin Sibley, Ben Sibley, Grant Sibley, Jack Sibley, Sydney Sibley, Connor Sibley, Reagan Sibley, Kaelyn Sibley, and one great-granddaughter, Vivian Sibley.

Ken spent his youth living upstairs of his family Garden Plain grocery store and working in his father’s field. Before school he picked vegetables to peddle market to other grocery stores in the area. Ken attended Garden Plain schools and graduated from Fulton High School in 1953, and has lived his whole adultlife two doors west of the old Garden Plain Grade School.

Ken met the love of his life, Helga (Ibs) while cruising the streets of Clinton in his new red/white ‘56 Chevy Bel Air convertible. The handsome guy with that bright smile and the shiny classic car, caught her eye and they had their first date at a Maid-rite in the Quad Cities. They married in the Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton, IA on August 20, 1960.

Ken participated in the Q-C Honor Flight to Washington DC November 10, 2010. He was a member of the Prophets Hills Country Club. He built and repaired golf clubs. He was an active member of the Rock River Carvers. He also served on the board of the Prophetstown Lyndon Tampico Education Foundation. He worked part-time for Good Samaritan Retirement Home as a handyman. Ken was a devoted member of Saint Catherine’s of Sienna Catholic Church. In his later years, he enjoyed assembling small log cabins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister, his wife, Marilyn, his son, Kenneth, his son-in-law, Phillip Crossman, and his beloved dog, Rufus.

Ken was blessed with 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Michelle (Asta) Duke, husband, Paul; children - Preston and Madison.

Ruth Ann is also survived by her brothers, Art Meier (Janet) of Prophetstown, IL, Frank Meier of Erie, IL, and many loving extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Maryann Jacobs; and her sister-in law, Pat Meier.

Ruth Ann enjoyed spending time at the river and being with family and friends. She was there to cheer her sons in their activities as they were growing up and made her loved ones feel special with annual “birthday song” phone calls. Ruth Ann had a willingness to share her perspective and was teasingly called “Truth Ann” on more than one occasion. She loved pastel colors and Post-it notes, but not

They also wintered in Donna, TX for nearly 20 years in their motorhome. Ken’s greatest joy in life was spending time with family and special hugs from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arla Kay Tomman, age 82, of Fulton, died Monday, August 11, 2025 at Mercy One Genesis in Davenport, IA. Arla was born December 24, 1942 in Fulton, IL, the daughter of Marvin and Margaret (Schaver) Van Zuiden. She married Ronald “Skip” Tomman on August 29, 1960 in Fulton. He preceded her in death on January 2, 2024. One of Arla’s first jobs was at Dew Drop In in Fulton which is where she and Skip met. She was later employed at Nielson’s Garment Factory, Woody’s, and Fulton High School for several years. Arla and Skip were snowbirds who enjoyed camping in Texas. She also enjoyed crafts, most recently wood burning.

Laurel Martha Reiss, 85, of Erie, IL, died Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at MercyOne Genesis Davenport Medical Center, Davenport, IA. Laurel was born August 31, 1939, in Tampico, IL, the daughter of Frank and Audrey (Anderson) Thomas. She graduated as co-valedictorian from Tampico High School in 1957 and went on to study Library Science at Sauk Valley Community College. Laurel was united in marriage to Larry D. Laurel loved her work for the library. She also served her community as an EMT on the Erie Ambulance for 20 years. Laurel was a longtime member of the Erie Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in many ministries. She enjoyed being a farm wife and caring for the many farm cats over the years. She also was known for nursing numerous wild animals back to health that had been injured.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Reiss, Erie; 3 children, James (Pamela) Reiss, Callawassie Island, SC, Lucinda D. Betty Lou Helen (Schmitt, Stone) Stralow, age 90, died on July 11, 2025 in Madison WI. She was born on July 18, 1934 to Richard & Martha (Geleng) Schmitt in Chicago IL.

Pre-deceased by husbands Reverend Robert (Bob) Stone, Jr., and Donald (Don) Stralow; son John; Daughter Kathryn (Kathi) Biller; daughter-in-law Shannon (McMullen); her mother and father; brother Bob; sisters Eleanor (Sis) and Lois.

Survived by sons Robert & Deborah (Port) and David; daughter Deborah & Christopher Boles; grandchildren Raechel & Daryl, Rebecca & David, Luke, Robert, Andrew, Danielle & Erich, Michael & Haley, Chad, Cassandra, Ashley & Tyrell, Heather and Michelle and great-grandchildren Elijah and Oliver; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and great grand-nieces and

She attended secretarial school after graduating from Steinmetz High School in 1949. She was President of her local Luther League. While helping to assemble the newsletter, she met her first husband, Bob Stone, who was attending seminary school at Carthage College. They were married on May 26, 1956. Their first son was born in 1959 followed by two more sons and two daughters in the next 5 years. After a few years, they finally settled in Morrison, IL at Bethesda Lutheran Church in 1966.

Betty became very involved in the Morrison Music Theatre Association, both as a cast member and later on as a director. She joined the church choir where she shared her beautiful soprao voice, and served as choir director for a number of years, also singing solos on occasion. She shared her love of music with her children and many long car rides went by quickly as everyone sang the miles away. She was very active in the church group Women of Bethesda (WELCA - Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) where she served as secretary and president. She was also the president of the PTA.

After nursing her first husband through

kidney failure, where she learned how to operate a dialysis machine in their home, he died on July 9, 1974. A month later she rented and learned to drive a 27 foot RV, and took the 5 children on a two week vacation to the Wisconsin Dells so they could all deal with the loss of their father in private.

Later that year she began dating Don Stralow, who was a member of Bethesda and the church council president. They were married on August 2, 1975.

After her children married or moved on with their adult lives she became involved with Clown Ministry as the mute clown Flutterbye, entertaining and sharing Jesus’s good news with many other congregations as part of a group of clowns.

Her job history includes being part of a secretarial pool for a large company, a secretary at Whiteside County Special Education and at a law firm. She worked for Pinkerton Security (complete with a badge!) at the local JCPenny store to help catch shoplifters, then back to being a secretary at the Whiteside County Health Department. She retired from that job, but not being one to sit around, she began working with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois Prison Ministry for the Storybook project,

As students across Whiteside County head back to school, I want to remind drivers, parents and the community to take extra precautions to keep children safe.

Tampico woman strives to create healing community

The health industry will tell you its remedies are grounded in research. Carol Camper will tell you her remedies are, well … just grounded.

For her, our health should be something that comes naturally. She’d rather see people turn to plants than pills when they can, and she’s doing her part to help teach people how to build relationships with plants.

Camper owns Avalon Unity Garden, a 100-by-150-foot patch of land located just outside her Tampico home that’s open to visitors by appointment – but this isn’t your grandma’s garden: no neatly hoed rows of tomatoes and carrots and corn here. The 5-year-old garden is a carefully crafted maze of plants and fruit trees, a gathering place for people to relax, meditate and learn nature’s ways. It’s here that she offers classes on a host of plantbased topics – medicinal mints, flowers as food, plant identification, herbs for pets, and more – along with offering a place where people can gather for supportive ceremonies and events.

Growing up gardening with her father in Sterling, Camper has long been fascinated with Mother Earth’s offspring and the health benefits they can offer, something that has fallen by the wayside in the past century as modern medicine has given us no shortage of concoctions and chemicals designed to cure what ails us. She’s constantly researching to get the most out of what plants have to offer, even ones people consider pesky, like dandelions and creeping Charlie. If it worked hundreds of years ago, it can work today, she said – it’s just a matter of learning.

That’s where Camper comes in.

“I feel like I’m that bridge between the past and the future,” she said. “People really are not taught. We haven’t been encouraged to eat healthy, to really look at ingredients, and we think that if it’s on the ground, not to touch that. We’ve been conditioned to instant gratification and ‘I want it now.’ I come from a generation where Dad would pull a radish out of the ground, wipe the dirt off on his pants and eat the radish.

“Times have really changed.”

Camper considers the top four most nutritious herbs to be, in order, stinging nettle, lamb’s quarter, purslane and dandelion; each can be found in the garden. Stinging nettle, Camper said, “is the most nutritious herb that people can consume; it is like a multi-vitamin that’s loaded

“Lamb’s quarter tastes good, and I really like it,” Camper said. “It’s high in iron, and it can be used as a green. For example, if you’re making tacos, it can be a lettuce substitute. I like to take purslane, dehydrate it and make it into a cracker. That way, when you’re snacking, you’re eating something that’s healthy for you that can clear any issues from normal grain like glyphosate, that can bother people’s stomachs.”

Classes on medicinal mints (such as creeping Charlie), edible weeds, and flowers as food are offered, as well as those on plant identification and what herbs are good for dogs.

Amaranth is a unique plant that has healthy effects for young women who are going through their menstrual cycle, Camper said, and while it can be a challenging time in their lives, Camper inspires them to embrace it. She can host puberty rites of passage ceremonies in the garden to help girls understand that their transition into womanhood is a blessing and not a curse, she said.

– typically in their late 50s or early 60s –which celebrates the wisdom that the years have given them and helps instill confidence in them as they age.

“These rites of passage ceremonies, when you say that you are honoring a menstrual cycle, it changes the energy,” Camper said. “Right now, we have a society that invalidates our young people and invalidates our old people. You’re honoring the intuitive messages you get. That is going to change that pain to enlightenment or power. It helps her go out and say that they can face the world.”

The garden’s embrace offers an oasis of serenity that welcomes people to step in and step back from the hustle and bustle. The space can be rented for special ceremonies, private women’s circles, meditation, yoga classes and more. Camper even welcomes campers, renting the space to overnight RVers.

The things that seem to grab their attention aren’t here. We have yoga mats and coloring books for the kids, and they can just come sit in the garden and focus and let everything disappear. It’s a place that people are going to be able to gain the benefits of the plants.”

Feeding people, nourishing the air, keeping stuff out of the scrap pile, solar power, biodiversity, helping pollinators … they’re all roles the garden plays on her little corner of the world’s stage –important parts that help people connect with the planet and its plants. Those weeds we complain about can actually be greens that we snack on; it just all comes down to learning their benefits.

“When we find how valuable it is, it’s a game changer,” Camper said. “These plants are connecting you back to the food, the history, the connections that we once had with it.”

Post-pandemic rebound boosts SVCC enrollment

Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon is seeing a steady boost in enrollment, part of a post-pandemic rebound that college leaders say reflects a growing interest in its workforce-focused programs.

Vice President of Academics and Student Services Jon Mandrell said the number of students has been climbing for the past three years – from 1,507 two years ago, to 1,586 last year and now 1,686 this fall. That’s about a 10% jump from last year alone.

“We’re traditionally somewhere between 1,500 [and] 2,000 students,” Mandrell said. “We’re excited that our initiatives toward public service workforce efforts are way up. That includes education, criminal justice and our health care programs. We’re seeing those programs have considerable growth.”

Mandrell said the increase is showing across the board – from first-time and returning students to transfers – and reflects a post-pandemic rebound.

“We’re seeing a lot of students come to

The Impact Program also is boosting interest in SVCC. It covers up to three years of tuition and fees for local high school students who complete 100 community service hours and meet program benchmarks.

SVCC Vice President of Advancement Lori Cortez said Sauk is welcoming its first cohort of Impact students this fall –16 students from Fulton and Prophetstown who enrolled in the program four years ago.

This year, 15 students from nine area high schools are starting at the Sauk Academy. Dixon High School senior Keegan Shirley is one of them.

“They have done over 100 hours of community service right here in our area to be able to earn their tuition and fees,” Cortez said.

Cortez added that Sauk’s new sonography program is drawing more students as well. The program was designed to address workforce needs in local hospitals, and the college is renovating facilities to give students access to state-ofthe-art technology.

Another standout for the school is its police academy – the eighth in Illinois – which opened to address challenges in accessing training and recruiting local officers.

“We have a full class, with 35 officers that graduate this month, and then another class starts next month, also with 35 officers,” Mandrell said.

Before the SVCC’s police academy was created, the nearest facility was more than two hours away, posing significant barriers for area law enforcement agencies. In 2021, representatives from SVCC and regional law enforcement began advocating for the program, and with support from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, local agencies and elected officials, it received approval in 2022.

For some, Sauk is more than a stepping stone – it is a launching pad. Michelle Diaz, president of the Association of Latin American Students and a sophomore sonography student, said the school’s affordabil-

ity and close-to-home location made it the right choice for her.

“My experience has led me to make connections with the president and the vice president,” Diaz said. “We help organize events, and it has led me to build a better leadership role here on campus.”

Alumna Anelli Salgado, who started at Sauk as a dual-enrollment student in 2012, went on to work for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers and now works on the Home & Garden Television cable channel. She credits Sauk’s programs and connections for helping her to succeed.

“My education at Sauk and my experience not only as a student, but also for AmeriCorps and other programs like the Association of Latin American Students, definitely helped me broaden who I was as a student and now who I am as a professional,” Salgado said.

Mandrell said the college’s growth reflects its core mission.

“It’s the access to education right here in our community, the relationships that we have built, the responsiveness to the community and the affordability,” Mandrell said.

Fulton hopes to build off strong finish after missing playoffs

Over the past decade, Fulton’s presence in the playoffs has been a given.

From 2014 to 2023, only once have the Steamers been on the outside looking in. That was in 2015 when Fulton went 4-5 to come up just short of extending its season to a 10th week.

A run of seven consecutive playoff appearances came to a halt last year. Three losses in its first four games, followed by back-to-back losses to start October added up to a 4-5 finish.

“All five of our losses were to teams that ended up in the playoffs,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “But at the end of the day, we didn’t play well enough through to have a Week 10.”

With a new season on the horizon, Lower hopes Fulton can mark its fifth year as members of the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference by beginning a new run.

“Towards the end of last season, we were playing our best football,” said

Lower, who begins his 19th season at the Steamers helm just five wins shy of the 100-win mark. “It just didn’t work out that we were as sharp as we needed to be, and in the NUIC, that’s not going to get it done.

“Walking off the field at 2-5 [after a 60-36 loss to eventual Class 3A quarterfinalist Durand-Pecatonica in Week 7], we as coaches told ourselves that for these last two weeks, we had to get the guys ready to go, even though there wasn’t going to be a Week 10. I’m proud of the way our guys bounced back.”

Finishing with wins over Knoxville and longtime rival Morrison, the latter a 41-7 decision in the teams’ first Wooden Shoe Bowl meeting since the COVID-shortened 2020-21 spring campaign, was an ideal way to salvage a playoff-less season as Fulton placed sixth in the nine-team NUIC with a 3-5 mark.

“There was all kinds of pride for Week 9, playing for the Wooden Shoe,” Lower said. “We didn’t have an issue getting the guys up and ready to go for that one.”

Looking ahead, the Steamers will have some key holes to fill in their bid to get back on the right side of .500 and into the playoff picture.

Among their losses to graduation were a pair of first-team All-NUIC standouts in quarterback Dom Kramer and lineman Josiah Heald and all-conference second-team linebacker Skylier Crooks.

However, Fulton does return an important player in senior Braedon Meyers, who stepped in under center for an injured Kramer in the final third of the season and threw for more than 600 yards and 11 touchdowns in a 2-1 closing stretch.

Joining Meyers, an All-NUIC firstteam selection, will be senior lineman and honorable mention pick Mason Kuebel. Kuebel and classmate Jonah Lutz will join Meyers in the offensive backfield, with Lower also looking to senior linemen Wyatt Becker and Kody Schipper and senior wide receiver/defensive back Landen Leu

as key contributors.

“Going into last year, we were somewhat young with some veterans, and we’re that way again this year,” Lower said. “One of the things we always talk about is leaving the field at the end of practice better than when we walked on it at the start.

“We don’t talk much about last year, but it’s in both of our heads, the coaches as well as the seniors. They don’t want to be the group to not make the playoffs in their junior and senior year.”

A charter member of the Three Rivers Conference, Fulton will kick off its fifth season of NUIC football Aug. 29, traveling to Eastland-Pearl City before its home opener the following week against Du-Pec.

“I think it’s been a good move for us,” Lower said. “Du-Pec is a solid 3A team, but it always starts with LenaWinslow, which has been the cream of the crop in 1A the last 15 to 20 years. We’re hoping to be right in there with those teams.”
