MORRISON – A Morrison woman died in a single-vehicle accident Friday, about 3 miles southwest of town. Adariana A. Willis, 24, was westbound on Mason Road, near Henry Road, around 5 p.m. when her Toyota 4Runner left the roadway. She attempted to regain control but Adariana overcorrected, causWillis ing the vehicle to roll over, according to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office. She was thrown from the SUV and later pronounced dead at the scene by Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald. The crash remains under investigation.

Rachel Helm, 16, of Rock Falls, appears in Whiteside County Court Wednesday morning with her attorney, Jim Lancaster. She is charged with concealment of homicidal death and arson in the murder of Peggy Schroeder, 53, of Morrison, in July. Her girlfriend, Anna Schroeder, 15, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, concealment of homicidal death and arson. Investigators say she shot her mother in the head with a .38 revolver on July 6 in their Morrison home.

A familiar face behind the wheel finds a new home behind the bar in Milledgeville BY GAVIN T. JENSEN Sauk Valley Media gjensen@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 MILLEDGEVILLE – When customers walk in to Wally’s Playce, they’re likely to find a friendly face behind the bar, popping a cap off a brew and chewing the fat with folks. His name’s Walt (Wally) Mennenga, and he’s not only the bartender behind the bar, he’s the Wally behind Wally’s Playce, which opened May 14. And as far as the owners are concerned, he’s also one of the bar’s best assets. The 76-year-old Milledgeville resident recently retired from Chadwick Oil & AG Services, where he was a familiar face to farmers, having delivered fuel to farms for years before taking on the post-retirement gig as bartender – a fitting position for the amiable fella. Owners Ken Duncan, 52, and Marcy Lawrence, 57, knew they could put Wally’s reputation to good use when they decided to open a bar. “Wally is one of those guys that when you meet him, you instantly like him; and he’s chatty, which will make him a perfect bartender,” Duncan said. That friendly familiarity helped him land a spot behind the bar – and in front of it, too, on the business’s sign. “We wanted to name the bar in honor of him and his retirement,” Duncan said.

APPLE RIVER – Eagle Nature Foundation had a Spring Big Bird Day May 12 at Apple Creek, 8384 N. Broadway Road. Naturalist Terrence Ingram documented as many bird species as possible that were living on, or in some way using or flying over Apple Creek. This annual event was started to try to document the loss of birds due to agricultural spraying in the area. Ingram saw many migrant birds this year. The 16 birds seen last year, but not this year, are the black chickadee, red-tailed hawk, Cooper’s hawk, sharpshinned hawk, bald eagle, northern harrier, nighthawk, chimney swift, Eastern kingbird, tree swallow, cliff swallow, warbling vireo, Northern parula warbler, yellow warbler, redstart warbler, and cedar waxwing. Ingram only saw a single bird of 11 other species, including the killdeer, great horned owl, common flicker, East-

The Mustangs in question are sophomores Nick Allen, Nathan Mickley, Keegan Anderson and Koby Brackemeyer, who rolled to a dominating win in the Class 1A 3,200 relay at the IHSA Boys State Track & Field Meet on Saturday on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Mickley, Anderson and Brackemeyer competed at state as freshmen, and Allen, a baseball player as a freshman, was the final piece of the puzzle. Together, they rolled to a time of 8 minutes, .59 seconds. It bettered their own school record of 8:08.43, set in Thursday’s preliminaries. “At the beginning of the year, I just wanted to practice,” Allen said. “I didn’t even feel like going to the meets. The first meet, I knew this group was something special with everything that they could do. I never really imagined a 4-by-8 team with four sophomores could be placing first in 1A. It’s crazy. It’s something crazy.” Allen ran the first leg of the race, and was in ninth place among 12 runners before handing the baton off to Mickley. By the time Mickley completed his two laps, he moved up to sixth place.

“My job was to make up some ground so we could get Keegan and Koby a chance,” Mickley said. Anderson took over for the third leg, and put the Mustangs in control. He caught the leaders on the backstretch, and with about 200 meters to go, put on a burst that left other racers eating proverbial dust. “Nathan gave it his all, and I knew he was going to get me in a relatively good spot where I could do what I could do,” Anderson said. “I just ran my pace. I passed some people, and the last 200 meters I just gave it my all. I was about 10 meters ahead when I handed it off to Koby, and I knew this is where we wanted to be. “I could almost predict what was going to happen, because we’ve been through this so many times since junior high. Once I got it to Koby, it was over.” Indeed, it was. Brackemeyer was never challenged, with a lead of 40 to 50 meters most of the race. The runner-up, Pleasant Plains, had a time of 8:06.14. “Koby had a nice kick that last 200 meters and gave me a head start,” Brackemeyer said. “I knew when I got the baton, I wasn’t going to let anyone pass me. I wanted this medal so bad.” Bianchi adds two more golds: The season was largely one of frustration for Newman senior Easton Bianchi, but it had a sweet ending.

Tough way to end a great season

Missiles on wrong end of call, Broncos’ clutch homer in sectional title game BY ADAM FEINER Sauk Valley Media afeiner@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5550 FREEPORT – Milledgeville’s softball season was eventually going to end in one of two ways: Reach the 1A state tournament for the first time in 5 years thanks to a double-digit winning streak, or bow out earlier than they had hoped. The Missiles were just one run and four outs from a berth in the supersectionals during Friday’s 1A Aquin Sectional championship game when Orangeville decided to play the role of heartbreaker. Hannah Holland cranked a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the sixth off of Milledgeville pitcher Ciara Miller, breaking a tie and lifting the Broncos to an 8-4 win. Milledgeville (20-7) saw its 13-game winning streak snapped, and also was on the wrong end of a controversial call that ended the top of the sixth with the score still tied 4-4. Natalie Brown drew a two-out walk, and Alli Schmidt slapped what looked to be an infield single while Brown raced all the way to third. Schmidt appeared to beat the throw to first by Orangeville third baseman Payton Meier, but was called out by the first-base umpire. “That’s a horrible call,” Milledgeville coach Brad Grenoble said. “We would have had first and third with my best hitter coming up in Miller. I asked [the umpire], and he said he may have missed it. You can’t say that. All three umpires

saw it. The Orangeville girls were laughing coming off the field because even they knew she was safe. That’s a game-changer. “But we didn’t fight through it. They took the momentum, and the girl hit a three-run bomb. That’s the game.”

Bianchi successfully defended both of his Class 1A sprint titles at the IHSA Boys State Track & Field Meet that wrapped up Saturday on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Those titles were in serious jeopardy due to a hip flexor injury suffered at the Riverdale Invitational in early April that sidelined Bianchi for more than a month. By Saturday afternoon, however, he was on top of the world. “It feels amazing,” Bianchi said. “My times would have been better had I been injury-free, but in a way it’s sweeter knowing I overcame adversity and having a whole month off during track season. Repeating under those circumstances was awesome.” In the 100, Bianchi cruised to a win with a time of 10.6 seconds, well ahead of runner-up Diondre Lewis of Warrensburg-Latham, who had a 10.89. There was the uneasiness of a false start on Walther Christian’s Charles Stamps Jr., a delay Bianchi tried to use to his advantage. “It’s a second chance for everybody,” Bianchi said. “I wasn’t sure if that was my best start or not. As soon as that kid false-started, it gave me another chance to get my mind right and focus. I was like, ‘All right, remember your mechanics, remember everything you’ve been taught to do.’” There were no incidents in the 200

Valentine added a sixth-place finish in the 100 (11.2), and Bruce added a seventh-place showing in the shot put (50-9.75). In addition to winning the 3,200 relay, Morrison got a fifth-place finish from Keegan Anderson in the 400 (50.13), while the 1,600 team of Nathan Mickley, John Winkelman, Koby Brackemeyer and Anderson took seventh in 3:26.35. The Mustangs placed 14th with 18 points. Newman’s 800 relay team of Nate Ahlers, Karter Decker, Connor McBride and Easton Bianchi was sixth in 1:30.89. The Comets accumulated 24 team points to tie for ninth place. Narrowly missing out on individual medals were Newman’s Shay Hafner, 11th in the 3,200 (9:54.39) and Brackemeyer, 10th in the 800 (1:58.39).

SECTIONAL SEMIFINAL Milledgeville 8, Lena-Winslow 1 Missiles pitcher Ciara Miller retired the first eight batters she faced, and it was enough to help Milledgeville soar past the Panthers on Wednesday. The Missiles scored two runs in the first inning, and answered a short Panther rally with three runs in the bottom of the third, and tacked on insurance runs in the fourth and sixth. Miller tossed a complete-game two-hitter against the Panthers, striking out 13 and throwing 75 strikes to just 24 balls. Zoe Johnson took the loss in the circle for Le-Win, going six innings and striking out four while allowing eight runs, 12 hits and two walks.

Former Aquin basketball star to offer camps LANARK – Freeport Aquin High School basketball player and former WNBA player Sophie Brunner will offer twp basketball camps this summer for local basketball players entering third through 12th grades. Camps will be from June 27 to 29 at Eastland High School, 500 S. School Drive, Lanark, and Stockton High School, 540 N. Rush St. Brunner led the Aquin Bulldogs to back-to-back state titles in 2012 and 2013. She was the third-leading scorer and second leading rebounder in Arizona State University history, and was a member of the USA team at the 2016 Junior Nationals in Toronto. She signed to play with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury team, and continued her professional career last fall in

Italy. Sessions will be broken up by age. Boys and girls entering third through fifth grades will attend from 8:30 to 10 a.m., while girls entering sixth through eighth grades will attend from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and girls entering ninth through 12th grades will attend from 1 to 3 p.m. Campers will receive a T-shirt, snacks, an autographed picture of Brunner, a picture with Brunner, and other memorabilia, prizes and awards. The cost is $50 per camper from third through eighth grade, and $65 for campers from ninth through 12th grades. Each session will be limited to the first 60 campers to sign up. help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states. As anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way. Also in July, we will be hosting another Defensive Driving class on Monday, July 23, and Tuesday, July 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On Friday, July 27, we will be hosting another Rules of the Road

Class from 10 a.m. to noon. We still haven’t heard anything from Tri-County regarding Summer Cooling. If they do offer it, they usually announce it on WCCI Radio. It’s not too early to be thinking about “Open Enrollment,” which starts Oct. 15 and goes until Dec. 7. We are taking appointments for that time frame, as we fill up rather quickly. Seniors Around the County The Table The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often! Vintage 405 Lanark UMC has launched a new group within the Lanark community.This will be called “Vintage 405” and will reach out to those in our community who are lonely and need social interaction. We will offer games, coffee and refreshments, as well as space for conversation. It is air conditioned and heated for comfort. If you need transportation, please call Carroll County Transit at 815-244-0011 for a ride. Are You Turning 65? Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you. Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums. The Senior Center is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Stop by and get your questions answered.

New Medicare cards coming in 2018 New cards will automatically come to you in the mail. This has been put in place to remove all Social Security numbers from your cards for your identity protection. There will be no gender and no signature line on new cards, and the cards will arrive in an HHS envelope. Please be aware: No one will call you for your information. If you receive a call about

your new Medicare card, IT IS A SCAM! New cards will start being mailed in April 2018 and all will be replaced by April 2019. So watch your mail, and shred your old Medicare card as soon as you get your new one. If you do not have access to a shredder, bring your old card to the Carroll County Senior Center and we will shred them for you.

Do you qualify for Extra Help with prescription drug cost? What is Extra Help with Medicare prescription drug plan costs? Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare prescription drug coverage. Some people with limited resources and income may also be able to get Extra Help to pay for the costs – monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments – related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. The Extra Help is estimated to be worth about $4,000 per year.

Many people qualify for these important savings and don’t even know it. To qualify for Extra Help: • You must reside in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia; • Your resources must be limited to $14,100 for an individual or$28,150 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count your home, car,

personal possessions, life insurance, burial plots, irrevocable burial contracts or back payments from Social Security or SSI.) Your annual income must be limited to $18,090 for an individual or $24,360 for a married couple living together. Even if your annual income is higher, you still may be able to get some help. Some examples where you may have higher income and still qualify for Extra Help include if

you or your spouse: —Support other family members who live with you; —Have earnings from work; or If you have Medicaid, a Medicare Savings Program or you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you should get Extra Help automatically. Activities at the Senior Center RECYCLING Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. We are doing things as little different this year, with the Ag Olympics being on Sunday instead of during the week. We hope to have more teams participate due to fewer conflicts. The age groups will remain the same, starting at age 8. The event will kick off at 3 p.m. There will be new games, T-shirts for participants, and more! A whole revitalization! Summer library programs will be kicking off here in June promoting ag education to children ages 3-12. In June, we will be learning about wind. A story will be read, along with an interactive hands-on activity and snack. There is no cost to attend, but we are asking for reservations in order to ensure we have enough supplies. On Wednesday, June 20, we will be at the Mount Carroll Public Library at 10 a.m., and Savanna Public Library at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 21, and at the Chadwick Public Library at 10 a.m. The Lanark Public Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday the 27th, and the York Public Library on Thursday, June 28, at 10 a.m. Contact your library to RSVP by 2 days prior to its event. Plant scientist to test fields for crop diseases PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF FREEPORT – Dr. Nathan Kleczewski, a University of Illinois Extension plant pathologist, will test fields during the next few years statewide to assess the effectiveness of seed treatments and cover crops in preventing yield robbing diseases.

Kleczewski will track pythium, rhizoctonia, and other diseases. He is looking for producers in northwest Illinois who may want to work with him on studies in 2019. New farm bill before deadline a ‘hard lift’ BY JIM TAYLOR FarmWeekNow.com Midterm elections, the immigration debate and major differences between the House and Senate versions of the farm bill are among reasons why it’s unlikely a new bill gets approved before the current one expires, says Bloomberg political reporter Alan Bjerga. There are many hurdles standing in the way, including conference committees and gaining approval from both chambers. “It is hard to find the plan that would pass a majority of House of Representatives and the 60 out of 100 votes that’s needed in the Senate, especially as you get closer to the November election,” he said. “Right now, any plan that the Sen-

ate comes up with, reconciling it with whatever the House of Representatives tries is going to be a very hard lift before Sept. 30.” A motion to reconsider the farm bill expires June 22, so a second House vote could happen any time before then. However, timing remains uncertain since members of the House Freedom Caucus continue to demand a vote on immigration before they support the farm bill. “Part of the chip isn’t just about trying to force a vote on immigration,” Bjerga said. “It’s pretty much part of everything that goes in legislation.” The current farm bill expires Sept. 30, and midterm elections loom shortly after. “Democrats are looking at pos-

sibly taking over the House if the Republicans don’t want to be on record for whatever they need to

swallow out of a farm bill that’s heavily influenced by Democrats,” Bjerga said.

And in this current climate of agricultural trade uncertainty, the farm bill’s safety net provisions become more important than ever. A ‘no’ vote on reconsideration is unacceptable.” Guebert also thanked lawmakers for their help defeating an amendment by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif. The proposal would have phased out commodity programs and crop insurance risk premium support during the next decade. “The strong opposition – 380 votes against the McClintock amendment – was a resounding statement about the value you and your colleagues place on making critical risk management tools available for farm-

ers,” Guebert wrote. The House voted down the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, H.R. 2, by a vote of 198-213. The legislation needed 218 votes to pass. Members of the House Freedom Caucus continue to demand a vote on immigration before they support the farm bill. Timing of a second vote remains uncertain.
