STUDENT NEWS Scholarships awarded by Cornerstone Credit Union FREEPORT – Cornerstone Credit Union has awarded its 2018 Founders’ Scholarships to Ruth Emily Castillo-Espinoza of Sterling High School and Jenna Skarlupka of Freeport High School. Each will receive a $4,000 in graduated payments over 4 years Ruth Castillo- to encourage degree completion. Espinoza Castillo-Espinoza will attend Loyola University to major in biology to serve children in the health care field. Skarlupka will attend Highland Community College and then transfer to a Jenna 4-year program to focus Skarlupka on a mass communications degree. Her goal is to write for the media to make a positive impact on society.
Scholarships awarded by Carroll County Help Center SAVANNA – Carroll County Help Center has awarded four $500 scholarships to graduating seniors in Carroll County. Selection was based on financial
need, academic achievement and future goals. Funding for the scholarships come from memorial funds, donations, and income generated by sales at Carroll County Thrift Shop in Savanna, which is a cooperative effort of the faith communities in the county. A 5-year scholarship, through the Lois Frank estate, was presented May 2 to Grace Merkel of Milledgeville High School. Merkel will attend Educators of Beauty College of Cosmetology in Sterling. Frank, who died in 2014, was the first president of the Help Center when it was organized in 1972. Three additional scholarships were presented to Katie Hoffman of West Carroll High School, who study animal science at Highland Community College in Freeport. Eastland High School recipients are Jared Wilczynkisi, who will study prosthetics at Highland Community College, and Nate Strong, who will pursue a career in welding. The Carroll County Help Center Thrift Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday at 126 S. Fourth St.

Morrison, Newman students participate in Youth Advisory Council SPRINGFIELD – Students from Newman Central Catholic and Morrison high schools took part May 3 in State Sen. Neil Anderson’s bi-annual Youth Advisory Council at the Illinois State Capitol.
About 30 students from seven high schools in Anderson’s district, selected by teachers and principals, learned about how the government in Illinois operates, heard stories from Anderson’s experience in
the Senate, and discussed how to become a legislator. The group toured the Capitol and visited the Senate floor during a session. They also participated in a mock debate about the legalization
of marijuana, where students played roles such as lawmakers, proponents, opponents, and lobbyists. Anderson (R-Moline) will host another Youth Advisory Council day in the fall.

IN BRIEF MORRISON – Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois’ Whiteside Service Unit will give Girl Scouts’ highest award, the Gold Award, at 7 p.m. Monday at Northside School, 520 N. Genesee St. Local recipients are: • Carolyn Graham of Fulton, who addressed the need for pollinators through her “Pollinator Garden” project. She worked with Andresen Nature Center in Fulton to create a garden of native plants, and created a public awareness campaign on how people can help prevent the decline of pollinators.
• Samantha Carpenter of Fulton, who earned her award through her project, “How Smoking Can Affect a Family.” After losing her father to lung cancer, Carpenter worked with medical professionals to gather and share information before giving an in-person presentation at a local middle school to more than 250 students. She also recorded her presentation on CDs, to share with schools nationwide. Carpenter will be unable to attend the ceremony. A bridging ceremony will take place, where Girl Scouts at each level can walk across a bridge to the next
level. Girl Scouts who have earned the Bronze Award, the highest award for Girl Scout Juniors in fourth or fifth grades, and the Silver Award, the highest which a Cadette in sixth through eighth grades can earn, also will be recognized.

“Here Comes Willy Banks,” released by McIver Publishing, is about a little pig, Willy Banks, who can no longer be cared for by his owner. Willy is given to Kelly, who becomes so excited about the new pig that she forgets to care for the other animals she owns. The other animals become jealous, and begin to play tricks on the little pig. Margosein is a retired high school teacher who also has experience in elementary, junior high, and college teaching. She wrote another book with Flaska, “Waddling Walter Runs Away to the Wide, Wide World.”

More scholarship winners announced!
ere are the final scholarship award winners. An additional $500 General Ag Scholarship was awarded to: Alan Osterhaus, son of John and Monica Osterhaus of Chadwick. Alan graduated from Milledgeville High School in 2015 and attends the University of Wisconsin at Platteville. Alan is pursuing a degree in dairy science and ag business. During his time at Platteville, he has become a resident assistant and been on the Dean’s List. Alan participates in Pioneer Dairy Club, where he holds the secretary position. This year’s Harold Schmidt Memorial Forestry Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is being awarded to Ashley Beyers. Ashley Beyers, daughter of Jason and Heather Beyers of Lanark, attends Gannon University in Pennsylvania and is studying prevet med. Ashley is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, vet club, and made the Dean’s List. She has assisted with Give Day, Fall Festival, and Wellness Fair while at Gannon University. During high school, Ashley was very active in the FFA, and was reporter her senior year.

Since the Carroll County Farm Bureau Foundation was started in 1990, it has given out $91,200 in scholarships. Wow! The crazy part is $91,000 would barely cover 4 years of schooling at a 4-year school at this time. The Foundation also provides grants to teachers to attend the Summer Ag Institute, and it also has donated ag books to libraries and day cares in the past. ••• It is hard to believe it is graduation time. For myself, I have one more year. Time has certainly flown. School gets out next week. This means we have library programs coming up in June! Watch for dates and times to be released here in the next 2 weeks. ••• I hope you are out there trying out which burger could be the best burger in Carroll County!

MORRISON – Art sales and other activities are taking place at the Loft 112 art gallery, 112 E. Main St. In a news release, Morrison resident Anne Frame said the gallery features 37 artists. They include painters, jewelry makers, photographers, potters, and greeting card creators showing and selling their wares. Woodlawn Arts Academy in Sterling partnered with Loft 112 for art classes in April for children and adults. Voice lessons are underway, and while they will end in midMay, other courses will be offered during the summer. The gallery also can be rented for birthday parties, open houses, and other functions for a fee. A birthday party, an after hours program for Main Street, and other activities took place in April. New members are welcome, and will receive a reduced rental fee, early sign-up for art classes, and a quarterly newsletter. Fee information and membership cards are available at the gallery. Old-time radio show in Morrison MORRISON – Morrison Music Theater Association’s 2018 production will be “1940s Radio Hour,” at 7:30 p.m. May 31 and June 1 and 2 p.m. June 2 at the Morrison Institute of Technology auditorium, 701 Portland Ave. The musical tells the story of a weekly evening variety show broadcast from WOV, a 5,000-watt New York City radio station. Jalayne Riewerts of Fulton will direct the production, while Doug Harridge of Morrison will provide musical direction and play Zoot Doublemann, the band leader. Nancy Brzezinski of Morrison will be the accompanist. Other cast members, by city and role, are: Fulton: Olivia VanderBleek as Ginger Brooks. Hospice memorial program set in Sterling

Rochelle rapped out 13 hits against three Sterling pitchers, and scored in every inning. The Hubs had plenty of help from a Sterling club that struggled in all facets. The Golden Warriors committed five errors, issued seven walks, hit two batters, and allowed runs to score on both a wild pitch and a passed ball. Sterling had a chance to stay in the game, as it had runners on second and third with one out in the first, second and fourth innings. All it had to show from those opportunities was an RBI single from Reilly Hay in the fourth. Sterling’s other run came in the first, on an RBI single from Willman. John Kisner got the win for Rochelle. He went the distance, allowing two runs, six hits, a walk and a hit batsman, with seven strikeouts. One of the hits allowed by Kisner was from Trey Morse, a single in the first inning. It gave him 125 hits for his 4-year varsity career, tied for the top spot in SHS history with Danny Matznick. Dylan Bryant took the loss. He gave up seven runs (six earned), seven hits and five walks in three innings. He also struck out three. Preston played 4 years of volleyball for the Cougars. She was a part of the 2016-17 state runner-up team, and as a senior helped lead her team to a regional championship. Preston plans to pursue degrees in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

Butterfly monitor training session set PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF THOMSON – Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge will offer a monarch butterfly monitoring training from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 1 at Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, 7071 Riverview Road. Since 2015, the learning center’s prairie has been part of the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project through the University of Minnesota’s Monarch Lab. Weekly monitoring is expected to start once milkweed emerges. Snacks and beverages will be provided; attendees are asked to bring a sack lunch.
