Students may also attend an out-of-state school within commuting distance of Carroll County. Carroll County gets on same page as neighbors with a program offering free books to kids BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 MOUNT CARROLL – Call it the reading program that could. About 20 people – many of them parents with young children – attended the recent launch of the Imagination Library program in Carroll County, offered through United Way of Northwest Illinois. The program, started in 1996 by country music artist Dolly Parton in Sevier County, Tennessee, provides one free, age-appropriate book per month for children 5 and younger in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia. The program not only helps prepare kids for school, but it gets them excited about reading. The first book sent is “The Little Engine that Could,” while the last is “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come.” Connie Kraft, executive director of United Way of Northwest Illinois, said Parton started the program as a tribute to her father, who couldn’t read and wasn’t able to finish school. In a letter on the program’s website, Parton said her father was “the
smartest man I have ever known but I know in my heart his inability to read probably kept him from fulfilling all of his dreams.” “She believed every child should have access to books,” Kraft said. “Recently, they sent out their 100th millionth book, dedicated to the Library of Congress.” United Way of Northwest Illinois has partnered with donors to help open the door to a library of books for budding young readers in Carroll, Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties. Carroll County is the most recent addition to the list of counties the regional United Way works with for the program. Janice Morse with The Morse Group, a Freeport-based electrical contractor that helps fund the Jo Daviess and Stephenson Imagination Library, approached Kraft about doing the same for Carroll County. The program was launched there March 28. So far, the response has been good. “Since we made the announcement 2 weeks ago, we’ve had 83 children signed up,” Kraft said.

at Mount Carroll Library, 208 N. Main St., and United Way of Northwest Illinois will reach out to other libraries and schools in the county to distribute forms. Families can register for the program at uwni.org/imaginationlibrary. A parent or guardian must be the one to register the child. Donors also can go support the program at the same site.
In Whiteside County
Imagination Library is a familiar program in Whiteside County, where it’s called Literacy Is Fundamental for Everyone. Since LIFE’s launch in 2003, about 150,000 free books have been distributed. Pam Martinez, director of programs and services at the United Way of Whiteside County, said 1,756 books will be mailed out in April,
and 39 children will graduate out of the program as they turn 5. “We partner with CGH Medical Center [in Sterling] to give the first book. Parents can sign up for the program then,” Martinez said. Parents who move into Whiteside County with age-eligible children also can sign up to receive books. Call the United Way office at 815-6257973 or go to uwwhiteside.org.

GAYLE I. YENNEY MOUNT CARROLL – Gayle I. Yenney, 91, of Mount Carroll, died Sunday, March 25, 2018, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. Gayle was born on May 19, 1926, the daughter of Leroy and Mabel (Brunner) Schubert in Pleasant Valley Township, Jo Daviess County. Gayle married Clarence A. Yenney on April 13, 1946, in Mount Carroll. Clarence died Feb. 22, 1998, in Mount Carroll. Gayle was a homemaker who cherished taking care of her family. She was a caring and compassionate person who enjoyed helping others. Gayle worked as a nurse’s aide, and in the cafeteria at Lincoln School in Savanna. She also babysat in her home and enjoyed the companionship of her dog, Fanci. Most of all, Gayle cherished spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Gayle will be dearly missed by one son, Steve (Linda) Yenney of Savanna; five grandchildren, Troy Yenney of Savanna, Travis (Cami) Yenney of Mount Carroll, and Trent (Nicole) Yenney of Savanna, Andrea (Jim) Neuschwanger of Forreston, and Amber (Nathan) Cruz of Goodyear, Arizona; four great grandchildren, Preston and Andrew Yenney and Brandon Hutchinson and Hailey Yenney;
one brother, Gerald (Barbara) Schubert of New Boston; four nieces, Val (John) Vranicar of Naperville, Angie Rockow of Freeport, Sherryl (David) Charles of Rockford, and Shelley (Ray) Comeau of Mount Carroll; and three great-nieces, Monica Charles, Natalie Comeau, and Mallory Comeau. She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Dixie Mesch; two brothers, Leroy and Wayne Schubert; and two sisters, Maxine Labar and LaVonne Rockow. The funeral was March 31 at LawJones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll. MOUNT CARROLL – Arlene Ellen Dietz, 93, of rural Lanark, went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Arlene lived most of her life in Lanark, coming from the Walnut and Harmon, Illinois area. Bud, her devoted husband of 75 years, was continually by her side during her last week of life. Her children and grandchildren provided care and comfort during her final days. She was a woman greatly loved, as was demonstrated by the many children, their spouses, grandchildren and friends who came to say their goodbyes. Her devotion to her family knew no bounds. Her family was her life. She was a very gracious lady, and had the ability to make anyone who met her feel comfortable and accepted. She was a woman of great faith. When her 12 children were small, and she wasn’t able to watch them as she wanted, she simply turned them over to God’s care and asked him to protect them which He did given the many close calls they had. They all grew to adulthood, healthy and with only minor mishaps along the way. Music was an important part of her life. Her ability to play the piano, organ and guitar was amazing given she never took lessons and was able to play beautifully by ear. Her husband and children received a blessing every time she gathered them around to play and sing. One of her greatest joys in her later years was hosting hoedowns, where she, her children and neighbors would play various instruments and sing. Her awesome cooking and baking abilities were known throughout several counties. She was greatly loved and respected in the community as was demonstrated last September at her and Bud’s 75th wedding anniversary celebration where over 100 people attended to share in their celebration. Arlene is survived by her husband, Bud; her 12 children, Carol Dietz, Nancy (Steve) Shellhause, Jane (Mike) Mullins, Bill (Deb) Dietz, Larry (Julie) Dietz, Ed
(Pat) Dietz, Bob (Nancy) Dietz, Rick (Sandy) Dietz, Connie (Bob) Zuck, Linda (Monte) Ballard, Don (Vonnie) Dietz, Anita (Bill) Pinnow; her 33 grandchildren (two of whom are deceased); 54 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brothers, Elmer and Merle (Anita) Von Holten; and her sister, Lois Fulfs. She also was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Beulah Von Holten; brothers, Bill, Ray, Ed, Les and Roland Von Holten; and her sister, Minnie Toben. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, and a celebration of life service at 11 a.m. Saturday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Her family would like to thank Dr. Werckle and Hospice Care of America for the outstanding care that was given to her. She appreciated her aide, Sheryl, for the care she received. A special and heartfelt thank you goes out to her nurse, Nick, who went far above and beyond being her caregiver. He became part of the family and a dear friend. Lanark receives sign for state honor PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF LANARK – A group of 23 guests witnessed the March 20 installation of the city’s sign as one of 14 project winners of the 2017 Governor’s Hometown Award. In a news release, the FYI, Lanark group said that the sign
was set permanently on the south wall of the Lanark Municipal Building, about 10 feet high, so it can be seen above the Visitor Information Center. Floyd Roberts, a member of the Lanark Brethren Church who conceived of the project in 2015, said Workcation 2016 was selected from

the small community category. This marks Lanark’s first time chosen for the honor. Workcation is a volunteer work week in June. The first program, in 2016, had 930 hours of work on more than 30 different projects, including mowing, weeding, trimming, minor painting, window and house clean-

IN BRIEF FULTON – A fundraiser to help a Morrison boy and his family with medical and other costs will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road. Brayden Houzenga, 12, was born without a parathyroid gland, and his body does not retain Brayden the natural calcium Houzemga needed to stay alive. He was diagnosed last year with calcium deposits in his kidneys and stage 2 chronic kidney failure, and recently with swelling of the kidneys. “They’re trying to manage the calcium with medicine. They do believe he’ll grow out of it by the time he’s 16 to 18,” Pastor Ralph Beidler of Spring Valley Reformed said. Donations will be accepted for the Houzenga family to help with travel to and from Madison, Wisconsin, lodging, and other expenses. The Trinity Quarter, Beidler, and the church’s praise team and ladies trio will provide music, with desserts provided after the concert. A bake sale and silent auction will take place. Cougars’ bats expected to be potent again this season BY ERIC INGLES Sauk Valley Media eingles@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5555 Scattered around the gym at Eastland High School are stations where hitters can hone their craft: a tee where a hitter can hit into a net, a red bag hanging from a post hitters can take swings at, a batting cage. From station to station around the gym, the Eastland softball team will swing its bats, and fine-tune what was already a formidable offense. “We do a lot of hitting,” Eastland coach Keali Eich said. “The first couple of weeks when they’re inside, we do mostly hitting because you can’t do very much fielding in the gym. The girls are focused and ready to go. “I think Eastland has a special kind of girl where every single sport they are dedicated to, no matter what their sport is. Erin Henze, obviously her sport is basketball, but she’s here every day and she’s only dedicated to softball during softball season.” The Cougars spent most of last season putting up eye-popping numbers on offense, and that has continued unabated this spring, to the tune of 54 runs and 58 hits in the first four games of the season. In fact, the first and fifth innings against West Carroll on March 22 and the second inning against Warren-Stockton on March 27 are the only three innings this year in which the Cougars have failed to score. That averages out to 2.7 runs per inning. “I think we have a very explosive lineup,” Eastland pitcher Emma Norton said. “You can’t count anybody out in our lineup, which is awesome, and everybody brings something different to the table, so that really helps us get a bunch of runs across.” Norton leads the team so far this year with three home runs. She and her battery-mate, sophomore Jenna Green, share the team lead with three doubles each. For both, that’s a continuation of a stellar freshman campaign last year, in which Green hit .468 and had an .894 slugging percentage and was among area leaders in doubles (13), triples (3) and home runs (7), and Norton recorded an .810 slugging percentage with five homers. Though she had the ninth-highest slugging percentage among area hitters last season, Norton’s was only the fourth-highest on her own team, behind Green, Gabby Snyder, and the now-graduated Makenzie Fink. “As a hitter, I just go up there and tell myself to make contact and everything will work,” Green said. “I just try to relax and not think too much. I just go out there and have fun.” “I just try to concentrate and relax to hit the ball,” Norton said. “As long as I know I’ll make contact, I know that the ball is just going to work out, and then I just try to get as many bases as I can.”

BASKETBALL Fulton’s Bruggenwirth headed to Illinois Central College Steamers standout Tyler Bruggenwirth announced on Twitter that he will continue his basketball and academic career at Illinois Central College next season. The 6-foot-5 Bruggenwirth averaged 15 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game this past season, and was a unanimous first-team all-conference pick in the Three Rivers West. Illinois Central, located in East Peoria, is an NJCAA Division II, Region 24 team that plays in the Mid-West Athletic Conference. The Cougars were 10-17 last season under 19th-year head coach Tony Wysinger.
Pierce to coach at RVC Former Eastland coach Kristy Pierce was named head coach of the Rock Valley College Golden Eagles on March 28. Pierce, who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for AFC, ranks fourth in Illinois history with 939 career wins at Shannon (1982-1985) and Eastland (1986-2015). She led Cougars teams to state championships in 2008, 2009, and 2015, as well as seven sectional titles, and 19 regional titles. Her daughter, Kelsey, is the current Eastland coach. Rock Valley, which won a NJCAA Division III championship in 2012, finished 18-17 this past season. Pierce takes over for Alyssa King.
llinois Farm Bureau is accepting applications for its Illinois Veterinary Education and Training (IVET) loan program. Loans are available to students attending any accredited college of veterinary medicine in the U.S. The program lends up to $40,000 to as many as three veterinary students each year. Loans are made over a period of 2 to 3 years. IVET awards recipients a $1,500 stipend during their fourth year in school, to help pay expenses associated with clinical rotations. Loans are repaid over a 5-year period, during which graduates must commit to working in a food animal practice that services Illinois livestock producers. Applications are due May 1, and can be found here: www.ilfb.org/ IVET. The selection committee will interview applicants in the spring at the IAA building in Bloomington. Successful applicants will be notified by mail. IFB established IVET in 2005.
