Brumbaugh leaving West Carroll schools Superintendent has accepted top job in Geneseo Shool District BY PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – Adam Brumbaugh’s term as superintendent of the West Carroll School District will last only 2 years. Brumbaugh’s resignation was approved during a special meeting of the school board Dec. 21. He was hired Dec. 14 to be the Adam Brumbaugh next superintendent of the Geneseo School District. There, he will replace Scott Kuffel, who is retiring at the end of the school year. The Geneseo Republic newspaper reported that Brumbaugh’s post in Geneseo will be a homecoming of sorts. He taught math at nearby Cambridge High School early in his career. “My oldest daughter was actually born at Hammond-Henry Hospital,” Brumbaugh told the newspaper. “I’m excited for the chance to come back to Henry County and work for an outstanding school district.” Brumbaugh has been with the West Carroll district for 4 years, having served as high school principal the first 2 years. He was selected from a field of 29 candidates for the Galesburg job.

Volleyball program for middle schoolers coming to end BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate MOUNT CARROLL – The woman who has been operating a volleyball program for West Carroll fifth- and sixth-graders for the past 5 years will be dissolving the group, the school board learned during its meeting Dec. 21. The organization was not sponsored by the school district. After unsuccessfully seeking a replacement leader, Shelley decided to end the program. Equipment she purchased – including 30 volley lights, two portable ball baskets, a travel bag and cart, three nets and 45 uniform tops – will be donated to the school district to use in sports and physical education classes. In a letter shared with the board by MidGeneseo school board President Doug Ford said the board was impressed with Brumbaugh’s ability to lead and an initiative he created called “Thunder Way.” “We say there’s a wrong way to do things and a right way,” Brumbaugh told the Geneseo paper. “The right way is

Chicago-based JJack Productions has chosen Carroll County as the location for its indie film, “Hunting God.” Most of the film will be shot at Grandpa’s Cabin, part of the Bill Delp Photo Studio on Zion Road, about 6 miles outside Savanna. The Whiteside County Economic Development and Rock Falls Tourism offices are funding the film office, which is running on a shoestring budget of about $10,000 a year. Some other organizations recently have stepped up as financial sponsors. Rock Falls Tourism Director Janell Loos has done most of the heavy lifting in setting up the office and coordinating the area’s efforts with the Illinois Film Office. OBITUARIES HELEN KOSTER MILLEDGEVILLE – Helen Koster, 109, of Milledgeville, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at Sterling Pavilion Nursing Home. She was born May 30, 1908, in rural Sterling, the daughter of Bernard and Marguerette (Hohlen) Eilers. She married Albert Paul Koster on Dec. 11, 1928, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sterling. He died in April 27, 1979.

They are excited about finding yet another purpose for their architectural masterpiece. “We love this cabin, and we’re glad we can share it with people,” said Rhonda Lampe, Delp’s girlfriend and business partner. “We moved it onto the property because we wanted to incorporate it into the studio, and Bill did all of the work himself.” Filming is supposed to take between 2 and 3 weeks. They are expecting about 25 people on

The cabin owners don’t expect the shoot to be much of an inconvenience. “We really don’t have to do much – just make sure they use it exclusively, make plenty of room for the crew to do their work, and give them a spot to relax,” Lampe said. “We’re just really excited about seeing the film.” Jackola said 98 percent of the film is set in the woods, so the cabin was the biggest selling point. An Illinois native, the director wanted to make the film in his home state, which offers a 30 percent tax credit – one of the highest in the country.

JJack Productions was started 6 years ago, and after doing a lot of commercials to help pay the bills, the small enterprise is ready to make its mark in the film industry. Two TV shows, which Loos couldn’t yet identify, are looking at the region, including a reality series that is interested in shooting in the Sterling-Rock Falls area. Word-of-mouth communication is important in the film industry, so officials hope the Carroll County film can open the door to more projects. “We’re hoping that there will be a snowball effect from this film,” said Diane Bausman, executive director at

The region has had a few film projects over the years, but now the area is sending the industry a message that it is film-friendly, Bausman said. “Now there is a concentrated effort to take advantage of the huge economic impact of the film industry,” Bausman

said. “The region has a lot to offer, but everyone needs to get on board and work together.” The film industry is now infusing nearly nearly a half-billion dollars into the state’s economy. When the 1989 release, “Field of Dreams,” was made in Dyersville, Iowa, Universal Studios spent more than $5 million in the tiny town of 4,000 people. Tourists would spend millions more in Dyersville, thanks to the film’s success.

Activities at the Senior Center Recycling

Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/ haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Senior Services Would you like to get a discount on your license plates?

If you qualify, you can apply for the Benefits Access Program, formerly Circuit Breaker, and receive a discount on your license plate sticker. Income guidelines per year are: for one â€“ $27,610; and for two â€“ $36,635. The age requirement is 65 or disabled. Also if you have applied before please check with us to see if it is that time of the year to reapply for your license plate discount.Â Call us at 815-244-1800 to make an appointment for help with your application. If you applied in 2014, you will need to apply again this year. Remember to bring proof of all income for 2015 (i.e. 1099 from Social Security, or your 1040 or 1040A income tax form, etc.) to complete your license plate discount application. The Department on Aging has notified us that starting Jan. 1, 2017, you will need to bring proof of income for 2015 and 2016 in order to qualify for the license plate discount.

Seniors Around the County The Table

The Great River Outreach Table is part of the Great River Outreach Center in Savanna and offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School, 926 Viaduct Road, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, 216 S. Main St. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. The food is brought to Mount Carroll on Wednesday. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often!

Are You Turning 65?

Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you. Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Court House to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become

eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months following your 65th birthday. Your IEP will span from September 2016 to March 2017. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first three months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums. The Senior Center is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Stop by and get your questions answered.

Grandpa spots scammers This is a true story of how scammers try to get your money. So please beware. A recent story involves Lou, who picked up the phone and spotted the scam almost as soon as he heard the young man call him “Grandpa.” The caller said he’d been arrested for drunk driving, needed money for bail, and wanted Lou to call a “lawyer” who would explain everything. (All while not telling “Mom.”) “I played along with it,” said Lou, 87, who was curious to hear the scammer’s pitch. But Lou also called his daughter, a consumer lawyer. She knew this scam — someone pretends to be a friend or family member in need of money for bail, a medical emergency, or other trouble. His grandson was fine. The scammers used common tricks. They tested Lou to see how much money they could get. They first claimed bail was $7,000, but when Lou said he only had half that amount, the fake lawyer said he could get the bail reduced. Usually, scammers ask you

to wire the money or get a prepaid card and give them the numbers on the card. If you do, your money will be gone. They tried to keep Lou from talking to anyone. They even told Lou he could be arrested and fined if he told anyone about their conversation. Why? Scammers don’t want you talking to anyone else. They want you to act fast, without thinking too carefully. The scammers used information Lou gave them to make their story seem more real. For example, the fake grandson told Lou the accident occurred “in the city.” When Lou named the District of Columbia, the fake grandson said, “Yes. In D.C.” Scammers also get information from social networking sites, or by hacking a loved one’s email account. If you get a call like this, get off the phone and check it out. Call your loved one using a phone number you know is theirs, or call another family member. Then, tell a friend your story. By talking about this scam, you can help someone else avoid it. And please, tell us too.

Exercise equipment at Senior Center The Carroll County Senior Center now has six pieces of professional-grade equipment available: Treadmill, rowing machine, stair stepper, E-Force cross trainer, and recumbent bicycle. You are welcome to use any of these anytime the Senior Center is open, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. These fine pieces of exercise equipment have been donated to help seniors get some needed movement and cardio work that can improve both their physical and mental states. As anyone can tell you, a few minutes walking or riding a bike can go a long way.

We have moved the exercise equipment to the downstairs area for more privacy for those who wish to use it. So bring a few friends and all of you can work out together, and the best part—it’s free!

What do you do with your old cellphones? Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. There is one box at the Senior Center now. If the program goes well, we will increase the number of boxes and place them in other areas around the county. If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones, ask them to drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. BOYS BASKETBALL RESULTS FRIDAY Newman 67, Milledgeville 42: The Comets shot cold to start their third-place game at the Forreston Holiday Tournament against the Missiles, but warmed up in the second half. Once a couple of shots fell from the outside, things opened up for the Comets inside. Two Cade Gorzny 3-pointers early in the third quarter led to plenty of room to operate for Newman big men Travis Williams and Devon House, and that sparked the Comets. Missiles coach Brad Grenoble was called for two technical fouls in the fourth quarter, where Newman pushed the lead past 20 points. What had been a six-point Comet lead at the break turned into a 25-point win. Lena-Winslow 50, Pearl City 49: The Wolves came back from a 31-19 halftime deficit to take a late lead against the Panthers, but fell short. Isaiah Bruce led the Panthers with 28 points. Lucas Peterson led the Wolves with 11 points. THURSDAY Winnebago 63, Newman 54: The Comets’ normally reliable long-range marksmanship went missing for most of its semifinal game against the Indians at the Forreston Holiday Tournament. By the time the Comets found it, it was too late. The Indians rode a third-quarter scoring blitz to seize control, then withstood a late Newman rally. Newman led 24-23 at halftime, and was up 30-27 after Devon House dropped in a pair of free throws with 6 minutes left in the third quarter. Winnebago, however, owned the rest of the period. It went on a 19-2 run, capped by a layup from Brennan Burkhart, to seize a 46-32 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Newman finished with 17 turnovers, and was 7-for-26 from 3-point range. Travis Williams was the lone effective Comet on offense, with 29 points on 10-for-20 shooting, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Devon House added 14 points for the Comets. Kenzell Jones paced a balanced Winnebago attack with 16 points, and Andrew Morrissey scored 14 points. Byron 63, Milledgeville 54: The Missiles’ unbeaten start after nine games came to a crashing halt in a Forreston Holiday Tournament semifinal game with Byron. The Tigers did much of the crashing on rebounds, especially on their own missed shots. Byron outrebounded the Missiles 44-26, and had a 17-4 advantage pulling down offensive rebounds after three quarters. Along with having plenty of rebounds, the Tigers saw the continuing resurgence of senior Pauly Rico. GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS FRIDAY Moline 60, Sterling 50: In their final game at the Sterling Shootout, the Golden Warriors picked up their intensity on defense and their efficiency on offense, finishing strong in a loss to the Maroons at Musgrove Fieldhouse. Trailing 47-21 with 4:43 left in the third quarter, the Warriors found a spark. Gabbi Schilling scored on a pretty post-to-post pass from Gretchen Gould to start the surge, then Josi Borum hit two free throws and scored a layup on an assist from Schilling. Moline pushed the lead back to 23 (52-29), but Borum scored the final seven points of the period, the last coming on a coast-to-coast layup with 4.5 seconds left after cutting into the passing lane in the frontcourt.

Sterling shot 14-for-26 (53.8 percent) and turned the ball over just four times in the second half. It was a marked improvement from the 21.7 percent shooting (5-for-23) and the 12 turnovers before the break. Schilling scored six of her 12 points in the fourth quarter for Sterling, and Genea Garza added eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Eastland scored the game’s first 10 points in 2½ minutes, while Milledgeville missed its first seven shots of the contest before Mady Frederick scored seven straight points. A transition layup by Katie Krogman stopped the Missiles’ run and started a 7-0 stretch for the Cougars to end the opening quarter. Eastland led 32-22 at the break, and kept momentum early in the second half by going on an 11-4 stretch. Milledgeville again answered the bell with its backs to the wall with a 15-5 run to end the third. Eastland had the final spurt, an 8-0 run to make it 56-41 with 5:36 to go, enough distance to breathe comfortably.

Frederick poured in a game-high 35 points, including a 10-for-10 performance from the charity stripe. She also added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. West Carroll 42, Polo 36: The Thunder topped the host Marcos in the seventh-place game at Polo. WEDNESDAY Milledgeville 49, Prophetstown 40: When crunch time came and with the outcome in the balance, the ball was in Mady Frederick’s hands. That meant good news for Milledgeville, and bad news for Prophetstown. The senior guard scored a game-high 25 points, including the last six points of the game to help the Missiles past the Prophets at the Polo Christmas Classic. A 3 by Prophets guard Dena Johnson cut the Milledgeville lead to 43-40 with 1:29 remaining, but Frederick answered on the next possession with a jumper. After Frederick missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Rebecca Waite snatched the offensive rebound, and Frederick made her next four attempts at the charity stripe to preserve the victory.

Prophetstown cut it to a one-possession game, down 37-35 after starting the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run, and to three after Johnson’s second 3 of the game, but never tied it or recaptured the lead. Frederick added team highs in rebounds (6), assists (5) and steals (3) to go with her 25 points for Milledgeville. Jocelyn Folkers added 14 points and four rebounds, controlling the paint for most of the game with effort. Milledgeville took the lead to start the fourth quarter and never looked back. She finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, and hit all five of her free throws. “It’s my best game ever; I had never shot that good before,” Folkers said. “We were just feeling it. We definitely made good cuts, and had never been able to get open like that. Annual meeting brings end to an era in Carroll County T

his past week, we held our 98th Annual Meeting. At the meeting, an era came to an end. The Carroll County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee was founded in 1955. This year, after 62 years, it was decided to retire the committee. While the women have always found a way to keep busy and have hosted some very successful programs, they have aged along the way and found it a good time to come to an end. I have yet to find a full list of those who were chair and for how long for the Women’s Committee. I can tell you most recently Jan Appel has been the committee chair since 2000. The committee would rotate the office of the chairperson. In the records I have, I found the following

women who served as chair: LaVeda Alexander, Laurie Foltz, Cindy Hook, Sharon Hook, Evelyn Krum, Edna Buchholz, Mary Holesinger, and Jan Appel. I am sure there are plenty of other ladies who served that I hope to surface in looking into the 100th Anniversary of the Carroll County Farm Bureau in 1919. A big thank you goes out to all of those who have served as the chair and as part of the committee. We vow to not let those programs that are still viable and applicable to our mission die off. At our annual meeting, we also elected our new

directors and officers. Remaining as president is Ed Livengood, Vice-President Nate Wiersema, Secretary Keith Rath, and Treasurer Bill Weber. Newly elected to our board is Ryan Stoner. Jeremy Flikkema continues as Young Leader chair. The rest of the directors include Larry Alexander, Branden Alexander, Allen Derrer, Brad Smith, Jon Lower, Dan Lamoreux, Mike Behrens, and Leo Gelwicks. ••• Let there be peace on earth, ... or at least peace at home! Our Christmas miracle is that Maggie and Nibbles the cat are becoming friends! Something we thought would NEVER happen! Now if only we can get Sassy the cat to give Maggie a chance, but I am not going to start asking for

too much. Sassy won’t leave the basement if Maggie is home. • • • Just a reminder that our office is closed this week for the holidays. Andrew Sucher, 25, of Rock Falls, was being moved to another cell in the Carroll County Jail around 3:40 p.m. Dec. 19 when he became “verbally combative” and smacked Chief Deputy Craig Dimmick on the left side of his face, Dimmick said in a probable cause
