SCHULTZ Sauk Valley Media kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 POLO – In a story so tragic, yet another piece of information that will shred your heart even further: Sarah and DJ Johnson and 4-year-old Kylia were just minutes away from their Polo home, and on their way back from their 35-week check-in with their Sterling OB, when they hit a patch of ice
in the snowstorm Monday afternoon, and slid into the path of an oncoming pickup. Sarah “Sarah Johnson Rose Johnson, only 26 years old and 35 weeks pregnant, was lost to us forever, and Oliver, the baby boy whom Sarah was so proud to bring into the world for DJ, before breathing his first breath and despite the effort of multiple physicians, followed his mother to the golden shores beyond,” her brother-in-law, Robert “Robby” Shaw, said.
Shaw’s words are part of his posting on the GoFundMe site he and the family have established to help DJ, 27, and Kylia recover. “This fragile, beautiful family was not and could not have been prepared for this tragedy,” Shaw wrote. “With the hard road already ahead, we do not believe that they should be further hindered by funeral and medical expenses out of their reach. JOHNSON POLO – With great sadness, the family of Sarah Rose “Smiley” Johnson announce her passing, along with her son, Oliver Daniel Michael Johnson. Sarah Johnson, 26, of Polo died pregnant with her baby boy, in a tragic car accident on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, only a few miles from her home. Surviving the accident are her husband, Daryl Allan Johnson, 27, and daughter, Kylia Olivia Ann Johnson, 4. Daryl and Kylia were transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital with injuries from the accident to recover surrounded by their loving family and friends. Sarah was born Feb. 13, 1991, in Downers Grove. Sarah grew up in Lanark with her five siblings, 35 first cousins, and many friends. Her days were filled with incredible people making memories, working hard, and living her life with smiles and laughter. Sarah made big holidays and celebrations with family and friends extraordinary with her happiness and special planning and documented family outings with pictures. She made every day something to look forward to for everyone she knew. It was on the conveyor belts of Rolling Hills Progress Center where she met her true love and their high school romance started. Sarah graduated from Eastland High School in 2009 and then attended college at Northern Illinois University. In 2010, she married the love of her life, Daryl “DJ” on Dec. 4. They moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, shortly after, where DJ started his military career, and Sarah worked at the Army and Air Force Exchange Services as manager of hard lines and sporting goods. Their daughter, Kylia, was born on July 19, 2013, in Alaska. They moved back to Illinois in 2013, and started working right away to build their beautiful family life. They made a home in Polo, worked, and got involved in their community and church. Sarah was an assistant manager at Walmart in Freeport. DJ works at Exelon in Byron, volunteers at Polo Fire Depart-

ment, and is in the U.S. Army Reserve. Sarah had a busy schedule, but she made sure to share a smile, sarcastic remark, or made time for those she was close to daily. By far her favorite pastime was spending quality time with her husband, daughter, family, and friends. Sarah and Oliver Johnson are survived by her parents, Mike and Gayle Hall of Shannon; brother, godfather Eric (Jackie, Chloe Higgs, Madeline) Sundquist of Winnebago; brother, Bryan Sundquist of Chicago; sister, Jennifer (Austin, Audrey) Sundquist of Freeport; sister, Kati (Robby, Charlie, Ellery, Berkeley, Magnolia) Shaw of Vesper, Wisconsin; sister, Kaye (Jonathan, Emmalyn (Goddaughter), Vanessa) Nichols of Wahiawa, Hawaii; sister, Leah (Nicholas, Mosheh) Balabuszko of Wonewoc, Wisconsin; and brother, Carl (Sarah) Sundquist of Lanark. ROBERT BOYD “BOB” PHEIL Nov. 21, 1918-Dec. 6, 2017 SAN ANTONIO – Bob Pheil found eternal peace on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, shortly after turning 99 years old. Bob was born in Carroll County at home on the farm his family sharecropped. He graduated from Lanark High School in 1937, and continued to work the land with his father until age 22, when he joined the Air Force. After completing basic training in Rantoul, he was sent to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. There, he met the woman who would remain his life partner, Tommie, at a nearby restaurant/dance hall while out for a night on the town with some friends. After only a 49-day courtship, the two were married and would remain so for the next 73 years. After World War II ended, Bob was stricken with polio and encephalitis. He was hospitalized for two years. After acclimating to life in a wheelchair, he became a payroll clerk for a clothing manufacturer. Later, he retired after working for U.S. Customs at the airport. Bob was a gifted woodworker/carpenter who made many items out of necessity during the Great Depression. Many years later, he used his talent to create items such as clocks

Bob and Tommie enjoyed many wonderful trips together, including Hawaii, Paris and London. They had the pleasure of seeing their sons grow up and form families of their own. Grandchildren and then great-grandchildren held a special place in their hearts. A devout Christian, Bob was an active – and the oldest – member of the Prayer Ministry at The Fellowship of San Antonio. While spending many summers at the family farm in Illinois, he attended services at Lanark Church of the Brethren. He read his Bible daily, and was a true testament to the power of faith, having persevered through many struggles, including World War II, polio, and the death of his beloved wife. The family wishes to thank the many friends who continually visited Bob over the past few years and the staff at Oak Park Nursing and Rehabilitation for the great care and compassion they provided during his last weeks. A devoted husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa, he is survived by his loving family: sons, Robert B. (Lisa) Pheil II and Joe (Carol) Pheil; grandchildren, Christopher (Amy) Pheil, Tomi (Adam) Miranda, Hillary (Stefan) Cadra, and Robert B. OBITUARIES&LOCAL NEWS RICHARD A. SASS HANOVER – Richard Allen Sass, 70, of Hanover, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. Richard was born Oct. 28, 1947, in Freeport, the son of Henry and Alice (Moore) Sass. He attended Shannon High School, graduating with the Class of 1965. After high school, Richard was drafted into the Army to serve during the Vietnam War. He married Debra Klapp on April 12, 1990. Richard worked for Harns Construction in Freeport for several years. He later farmed and milked cows for the Ellis Farm in Forreston. He was a member of the American Legion and the Shannon Bowling League. He enjoyed camping, going out to eat, watching westerns, doing crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR, going on road trips, and in his youth, drag racing. Richard will be dearly missed by his wife, Debra; one daughter, Katherine (Jonathan) Garman-Taber of Free-

Sucher’s charges in beating of DCFS worker upped to attempted murder BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ Sauk Valley Media kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 MOUNT CARROLL – The man accused of beating a DCFS worker nearly to death has pleaded not guilty once again, this time to attempted murder. Andrew Sucher, 25, of Rock Falls, pleaded not guilty Oct. 6 to aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and aggravated battery of a state employee, each of which carries 2 to 5 years in prison. He has since been indicted and pleaded not guilty to attempted first-
degree murder, which carries at least 6 to 30 years in prison, and the two battery chargAndrew es, each of Sucher which carries 2 to 5 years. He is in Carroll County Jail on $200,000 bond, and had a pretrial hearing Monday. For now, his trial is set for the week of Jan. 30; the new charge might necessitate a change. He’s accused of kicking Pam Knight, 59, in the head so severely on Sept. 29 that he fractured
her skull and left her in a coma. The grand jury returned the indictment Dec. 7; Sucher pleaded not guilty the next day. Knight, of Dixon, worked out of the Sterling Department of Children and Family Services office. She still is recovering at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, but never will be able to return to work, and never will be the same – in fact, she will require medical equipment and support the rest of her life, her husband, Don Knight, has said.

Let’s begin with legislation. The Farm Bureau worked diligently all year both statewide and nationally. It launched a new membership benefit program. While our Young Leaders led the pack in our membership group statewide, Young Leaders raised $978,674 for the Harvest for All. The Collegiate Farm Bureau program continues to grow, as it grew to 570 members this year. Externally, IFB hosted three major food companies on farm tours to share the story of Illinois agriculture. Throughout the state, 75 urban legislators have been adopted to be educated by downstate County Farm Bureaus to learn more about life outside of Chicago and the collar counties. Citizens ready to find solutions after recycling center closure BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – About a dozen concerned citizens expressed their willingness to work with the Savanna City Council to “find solutions” to their recycling needs, now that the city’s transfer station is no longer available for this purpose. In March, the council voted to approve a 4-year contract with Moring Disposal, which included discontinuing recycling service at the transfer station except for tires, metal and yard waste. There is a charge for tire disposal. The current contract expires April 30, 2021. Larry Stebbins, the former mayor and owner of Stebbins Appliance,
saidhe’s had a lot of feedback and questions since addressing the council on the matter in March. He said many he’d spoken to were willing to spend time “to find solutions to bring this facility back to service Savanna. People are willing to pay for recycling. ...” “This time, all I’m asking the council is for it to be sent to committee for further review,” he said. Maggie Friedenbach produced a letter with a list of county residents who said they were willing to pay a fee to use the recycling center. These, she said, were people “who actually come into town and shop at the stores when they do their recycling.” She advocated a subscription program for those interested in still
having their recycling needs met. Freddie Preston said she would “never mind paying to bring my recycling up to the transfer station.” She said she takes her recycling items to Clinton, Iowa. “I think recycling is one way we can contribute to keeping our Earth in better shape,” she said. Chris James, one of the few aldermen who were on the council when it made the change said “there was nobody here that wanted to get rid of” recycling. James said the high cost of recycling bins and other costs were just too high to justify continuing the facility.

FULTON – A 29-year-old Savanna woman who police say was caught with a wide variety of controlled substances and who is accused of dealing meth is in Whiteside County Jail on $75,000 bond, facing seven felony charges.

ries 4 to 15 years in prison; possession of 5 to 15 grams of meth, which carries 3 to 7 years; and possession of 10 to 30 grams of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of 15 grams of cocaine, possession of six dextroamphetamine pills, and possession of two alprazolam pills, all controlled substances, and each of which

GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS SATURDAY Sterling 51, Rock Falls 34: The Golden Warriors used defense to fuel a win over Rock Falls in the Sterling Shootout. Sterling swiped eight steals and Josi Borum grabbed six of those, as the Warriors turned a lot of swipes into points. Rock Falls turned the ball over 21 times in the game, and Sterling turned those chances into 12 points. Borum finished with 26 points. She closed the first quarter with a basket to put Sterling ahead 12-10, then opened the second with a layup and a 3-pointer sandwiched around a Kenzie Olson basket for Rock Falls, putting Sterling up 17-12. Sterling led by as many as eight in the first half, with Borum getting a three-point play and a layup to make it
28-20, but Rock Falls closed the half on a small run. Hewitt hit a free throw and Molly Buck turned a long rebound into a layup, then scored again on a jumper to beat the second-quarter buzzer, making it 28-25. Rock Falls shot 11 of 45 from the field in the game (24 percent) and 2 of 26 from the field in the second half (8 percent). Miranda Hewitt led the Rockets with 15 points. Sterling lost to Hononegah, 46-29, earlier in the day. Borum led the Golden Warriors with 10 points against the Indians. Milledgeville 55, West Carroll 23: The Missiles opened up the Polo tournament with a mercy-rule win over West Carroll. Milledgeville led 34-6 at the half, and earned the running clock with 2:34 remaining in the fourth quarter on Adrianna Schmidt’s baseline jumper. Jocelyn Folkers led the Missiles with 13 points off the bench, and Rebecca Waite (12 points) and Mady Frederick (10) also scored in double figures. West Carroll started the first 5 minutes of the third quarter on a 10-2 run, and
were led by Maddie Meek’s eight points. Eastland 53, Warren 32: The Krogman sisters notched a pair of doubledoubles to lead the Cougars to victory at the Polo Tournament. Katie Krogman had 17 points and 10 rebounds , and Karlie Krogman finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and two assists. Erin Henze had nine rebounds and 10 assists, and Lydia Coatney grabbed seven rebounds for Eastland, who led 12-5 after one quarter and 28-12 at halftime. FRIDAY Richwoods 63, Sterling 21: Sterling hosts its annual girls basketball shootout in part to bring in some of the top talent in the state, and it got a firsthand look at some of that talent from the Knights. Richwoods led 13-3 after one quarter, and steadily pulled away. Genea Garza led the Golden Warriors with five points, and Josi Borum led with five rebounds.
DEC. 14 Hall 50, Newman 35: The Comets were on the wrong end of a huge Red Devils’ surge late in a TRAC East home game. Newman led 29-24 at the halfway point of the third quarter. However, Hall responded with a 9-0 run to end the third, and that grew into a 26-6 run to end the game. Gabby Englehaupt hit two jumpers, Hannah Hart nailed a 3, and Madi Soldati had a layup to give Hall a 33-29 advantage after three that the visitors never relinquished. The Comets didn’t have a field goal in the fourth quarter. Adding to their woes was a 24-percent shooting night (13-for-54) that included 1-for-11 shooting from 3, and an 18-percent second half (5-for-28). Hall shot just 33 percent for the contest (16-for-49), but hit 9 of its 23 shots in the second half. Madison Craft had team highs with seven points and seven steals for the Comets.

WRESTLING HIGHLIGHTS SATURDAY PantherHawks, Fleetwood win at Erie: Fulton’s Tyler Fleetwood won his weight class for the fourth consecutive season at the 49th Annual Panther Holiday Tournament in Erie. He also picked up a trophy for being named the most outstanding wrestler in the lower weights.
“It doesn’t matter until Champaign,” Fleetwood said, referring to the state tournament, “but this is nice to get this a fourth time.” Competing at 132 pounds, Fleetwood was a 7-1 winner against Rockridge’s Dallas Krueger in the finals. Fleetwood previously won Panther Invite titles at 106, 113 and 120 pounds. It took nearly 4 minutes of mat time before Fleetwood was able to turn Krueger for three back points. He added a reversal and takedown in the third period for four additional points. “You don’t force anything against him,” Fleetwood said. “He’s funky, so I just made sure it was there. I wasn’t being cautious. I was just making sure my attacks were there.” Lena-Winslow/Stockton, the defending Class 1A state champions, won the 14-team tournament with 230.5 points, well ahead of runner-up Orion, which had 194.

He is accused of dragging the 6-year-old by the foot and striking him in the face with a squirt gun, and of grabbing a woman by the neck, throwing her against a wall, pushing her down several times and taking her phone away, in an incident that happened July 29. He is charged with aggravated battery of a child, which carries 2 to 5 years in prison, and battery, domestic battery, and interfering with the reporting of a domestic battery, all misdemeanors Knight was attacked at his parents’ Milledgeville home immediately
upon her arrival to take a 2-year-old boy into protective custody as a result of the Whiteside charges.​ Sucher pleaded not guilty to those charges on Aug. 14, and a jury trial was set for Nov. 14, but that case now is on hold while the Carroll County case proceeds.
Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello has said he wants to have Sucher’s bond increased, to ensure he will be brought immediately to Whiteside County Jail for adjudication once the Carroll County case is resolved.

Their status is not available, the hospital said Friday morning. Despite multiple injuries” DJ “is making a beautiful recovery,” Shaw wrote. Kylia, who was in the back seat of the car, “is now courageously recovering from her trauma as we anxiously watch.” According to her obituary, Sarah, who was an assistant manager at Walmart in Freeport, grew up in Lanark and graduated from Eastland High School in 2009. She and DJ were high school sweethearts who met when working at Rolling Hills Progress Center in Lanark. They had just celebrated their seventh anniversary on Dec. 4. They moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, shortly after they were married; that’s where DJ began his military career and Sarah was a manager at the Army and Air Force Exchange Services. They moved back to Illinois in 2013. Among others, Sarah is survived by her parents, Mike and Gayle Hall, of Shannon, and sisters Jennifer Sundquist of Freeport, Kati Shaw of Vesper, Wisconsin, Kaye Nichols of Wahiawa Hawaii and Leah Balabuszko of Wonewoc, Wisconsin. We need to show the county that there’s enough interest in it.� The council voted to send the matter to the Water/Sewer/Refuse/ Streets and Alleys Committee for further review.
Finance news The council approved a request from the Public Works Department to replace two fire hydrants and valves at a cost not to exceed $10,000. The council also approved the second and final reading of the annual tax levy ordinance, which would appropriate $10,540,222. The amount paid for by sources other than taxation would be $9,786, 777, and the amount paid for by taxation would be $753, 886.
The council also approved:
• A “hotboxâ€? trailer, a vibratory roller, and a tilt-bed trailer, which will allow for hot pack repair of city streets, for about $35,000. • Granting River Cities Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration $2,160.00
from the TIF fund for each of the next 5 years, for renovation of its new business site. • An additional $15,500 in administrative fees to Community Funding and Planning Services for extra work due to the splitting of the loan administration fees between the city’s two loans (for the in-system sewer project and the waste water treatment project). • The final draw down of $164,000 for the waste water treatment plant and in-system sewer projects. • Appropriating $107,874 of Motor Fuel Tax Funds for maintenance.
