Fulton students get jumpstart on computer literacy Learn code in program brought by PBS BY PHILLIP HARTMAN Prairie Advocate phartman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5525 FULTON – Computers are everywhere, accessible to nearly everyone of any age these days. But kindergarteners doing code? Some kids in the kindergarten through second grade at Fulton Elementary School are getting ahead of the learning curve. About 170 students picked up basic computer coding skills from Oct. 10 through Nov. 15 in an initiative using the PBS KIDS Scratch Jr. computer app. The storytelling program lets children use simple coding instructions to animate characters from PBS shows. WQPT Quad Cities PBS partnered with teachers at the school, with funding from Fulton resident Rosemary Huisingh, 69, who knows Mary Pruess,

tablets to the school, with each of the nine classes receiving 225 minutes of coding instruction. Michael Carton, WQPT’s education and outreach director, said the students learned both the app’s interface and how to determine which symbols would make a character do a certain action.

OBITUARIES RUTH A. WOLF MILLEDGEVILLE – Ruth A. Wolf, 63, of Milledgeville, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll. She was born July 4, 1954, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Chester and Joyce (Fey) Strehlow. She married William Wolf on Dec. 9, 1972, at Milledgeville Brethren Church. Ruth was a custodian with the Milledgeville-Chadwick School system for 23 years. She previously had been employed with Franz Manufacturing for 10 years. Ruth enjoyed the outdoors, flowers, and working in her yard. She loved to decorate for any holiday, attending horse shows, her grandchildren’s sporting events, and camping with her husband, Bill. In her leisure time she liked to sit by the pool. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her, and she supported them every chance she had. She and Troy had a very special bond. The smiles and laughs when one would enter a room always will be remembered. Surviving are her husband, William of Milledgeville; two daughters, Jennifer Kendall of Milledgeville and Billy Jo

a member of Evangelical Free Church in Lena. Mary Ellen loved Bible study, bridge, knitting, and the Chicago White Sox. Oscar and Mary Ellen lived in Columbus, Ohio, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Boston, Saginaw, Michigan, Streator, and Paris, Illinois, during his 35 years with International Harvester, and finally retiring to Lena. Mary Ellen is survived by three sons, Clark (Susan) Miller of Lanark, Joe (Mary Jane) Miller of Bloomington, and James (Barbara) Miller of Polo; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oscar, on June 14, 1991; four sisters- Jean Oates, Martha Azzam, Opal Nesef, and Charlotte Snow; and a brother, Clyde Clark Junior. Visitation was Monday at Leamon Funeral Home in Lena. A graveside service was Monday at Lanark Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick

ASPINWALL PEARL CITY – Gerald Edgar Aspinwall, 77, of Pearl City, passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, surrounded by his family, and Tiger, his beloved dog, while watching “Gunsmoke.” Gerald was born June 9, 1940, in Freeport, to Kermit and Leona (Peck) Aspinwall. Gerald married Linda DeSutter on Feb 3, 1968, on the family farm in Freeport; they were married 49 years. Gerald hauled milk and gasoline in the Pearl City area, was a longtime mechanic at Meyer’s Ford in Freeport, and retired in 2006 from Iroquois Foundry in Browntown, Wisconsin. Gerald enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River teaching his daughters to water-
ski, and spending time with his two grandsons, Christopher and Kyle Aspinwall, his granddaughter, Tanya (Mike) Truman and their two sons, Tyler and Trae, as well as his three neighbor girls Shyanna, Laney, and Charlee (Adam and Heidi) Ditzler. Gerald is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Lindy Aspinwall and Dena (Joe) Blakely; sister, Sharon (Stan) Johnson; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were both of his parents, Kermit and Leona Aspinwall; and his brother, Russell and his wife, Janet, Aspinwall. Gerald requested that his remains be donated for medical research.There will be no funeral services, but there will be a celebration of life at 10 a.m. Dec. 10 at Slurp and Burp in Loran. City Council OK’s pursuit of trail head project funds

For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council voted unanimously Nov. 28 to apply for an IDOT Transportation Enhancement Program grant that would fund a trail head to help improve the Great River Trail and the Train Car Museum. At its previous meeting, the council approved spending the money on cost estimates. Alderman Roger Husband questioned some of the proposed engineering numbers, but Mayor Chris Lain reminded him the city can put the work out for bid and is not locked into any firm numbers. “When it comes time to bid out the work, there’s no reason we can’t bid that out, ... and we would be silly not to,” he said. Lain said the project is important because it “will be the entrance to our downtown, a huge update and a huge tourist attraction for us. ... This is a project that’s going to elevate that whole area.” Husband agreed, but said he had issues with what is perceived as some high costs for engineering.
Lain delivered what he thinks will be the final update on the city’s long running wastewater treatment plant project, in-system sewer project and Bowen Street Water Main Project. The mayor said that a new gate that would help mute odors from the plant had been delivered, though some parts were missing and would be shipped. He noted ongoing software training for the plant, and said Superintendent of Public Works John Lindeman had indicated the project and associated items had progressed enough so that they could be removed from future agendas. Aldermen Husband, Jeff Griswold, and Christine Lee advocated for a 6-month report from Lindeman on cost savings realized with the new plant, in terms of energy output, manpower and other items. The council also approved the annual tax levy ordinance, which would appropriate a total of $10,540,222. The amount paid for by sources other than taxation would be $9,786,777, and the amount paid for by taxation would be $753,886.

PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SHANNON – Illinois Livestock Development Group and Illinois Pork Producers Association recently helped the Krogman family celebrate the completion of a 2,450-head wean-to-finish pig barn near Shannon. First-generation farmers Chad and Julia Krogman moved in 2015 to the Shannon area and found a farmstead with an existing pig barn, but wanted a new barn. The Krogmans have three young sons. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place to open the barn, and a pork chop lunch provided. The new facility will receive its first load of pigs this week. During their 6-month stay, pigs will come in at about 12 pounds and staying on-site until they reach market weight of about 280 pounds.

Eastland 60, Stockton 50: The Cougars picked up an NUIC West road win and avenged a loss from
the Forreston Tournament. Erin Henze paced Eastland with 21 points, four steals and five assists. Lydia Coatney added 17 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jordan Miller and Katie Krogman each scored eight points. Eastland (6-1, 3-0 NUIC West) jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter and led 31-21 at halftime. After the Blackhawks scored 14 in the third quarter to tie the game at 35 after three, Eastland went on a 25-point tear in the fourth to pull away. Sterling 56, Morris 41: Morris dared post players Gretchen Gould and Gabbi Schilling to beat the Redskins offensively, and they happily obliged. When the two weren’t finding each other in the half court, junior Josi Borum and sophomore Grace Gould were racing up the court and converting fast-break layups after swiping steals. Sterling (3-5) used a swift and aggressive defense and crisp passing on the offensive end to beat Morris in a NIB-12 crossover matchup inside Musgrove Fieldhouse. The Redskins tried to doubleteam Schilling in the short corner, but the senior unloaded the ball quickly to the elder Gould, who found openings in the Morris zone for a team-high 15 points. Schilling was solid as well, finishing with eight points, five rebounds, and three assists. NOV. 30 Sherrard 35, Fulton 23: The Steamers were unable to get past Sherrard in their home opener. Rockridge 37, Morrison 32: The Rockets outscored the Fillies 12-2 in the fourth quarter to take the come-from-behind win in Morrison. Rockridge led 12-8 after one quarter, and the game was tied 20-20 at halftime before Morrison scored 10 points in the third quarter to take the lead. Princeton 54, Newman 45: The Comets fell at home to Princeton
in a Three Rivers East matchup. Newman led 16-9 after one quarter before Princeton scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a 33-28 halftime lead. Asche steps down at EPC Longtime coach cites other job as reason for resignation

The veteran coach has called it quits after 11 seasons at the Wildcatz’s helm, where he amassed an 84-33 record that included three consecutive undefeated regular seasons, capped by the Class 2A state championship in 2014. “It’s just time,” Asche said of his resignation. “I’ve been thinking about it for a little while now, with more demands at work and needing to be available to do more in my job. I just can’t commit the time that coaching football really needs.” Asche, a former dairy farmer,

is the head of customer service at Lanark Ag, and felt that the responsibilities in his day job were affecting his performance for his night gig. “My head’s not in it as much as it should be when I’m coaching,” Asche said. “I have to give the final answer on everything related to customer service and sales [at Lanark Ag], and it’s time to become the coach there instead of on the football field.” Asche took over the EPC program from Bill Johnson in 2007 and continued to build the perennial playoff contender. The Wildcatz made the playoffs in all but one of Asche’s years as head coach, but lost in the first round five of those 10 seasons. This fall, EPC finished 5-4 before losing to eventual 2A state champ Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley 50-14 in the first round. “I was a little disappointed in this past season, because these
kids are better than 5-5,” Asche said. “They’re great kids with a lot of talent who work their butts off for me, and I don’t want them to suffer because I’m not all-in all the time. It’s time to get out when you start underachieving, and I didn’t think I was being fair to the kids.” The Wildcatz won the NUIC Northwest title in 2010, ’12, ’13 and ’14, and didn’t lose a regularseason game from 2012-14. The 2012 season ended with a firstround playoff loss, then 2013 was halted in the second round by a Newman team that eventually won the 2A state title. But in 2014, EPC finally got over the hump. With a talented, experienced group of senior leaders, the Wildcatz ran the table that fall, culminating in a 41-12 rout of Maroa-Forsyth in the 2A state championship game.
Pate, Clint Schielein and Dylan Messer all scored pins. Morrison’s Ryan Kennedy scored a pinfall at 120 pounds, Augustus Linke scored one at 132 pounds, and Reilly Dolan scored one at 152 pounds. WC splits, Newman goes 0-2: The Thunder beat Newman and fell to Byron at home, while Byron also beat the Comets. West Carroll beat Newman 36-27 behind pins from Dalton Coyer at 160 pounds in 1:30 and Eli Dertz at 220 pounds in 3:06. Newman got pins from Cael Sanders at 1:33 at 145 pounds and Brody Ivey at 58 seconds at 152 pounds. Newman’s Kyle Tunink won his 126-pound match with Ethan Doty on a 2-1 decision. VOLLEYBALL NEWS Krogman headed to Clarke Eastland senior Katie Krogman will continue her volleyball career at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa. A 4-year member of the Cougars varsity team, she was part of the statechampionship team in 2015 and runnerup in 2016. Eastland won regional titles all 4 years Krogman was part of the program. She will join a Clarke Pride squad that went 27-9 this year, 13-6 in the Heart of American Conference.

Over the years we maybe beat some team that we shouldn’t have and also lost to some teams we shouldn’t have, but I always went to bed knowing that the better team had won that night, and that I did the best I could to get the kids prepared.â€? Eastland athletic director Scott Hartman knows the co-op has no easy task in replacing Asche, and said the players are the ones who will miss him the most. “The kids loved Randy’s energy, and they’d run through a brick wall for him. A lot of them are crushed right now,â€? Hartman said. “He put the program on his shoulders and ran with it, took full responsibility in the down times and gave the kids all the credit in the up times, and they loved him and worked hard for him and played hard for him.â€?

He says he’d love to stay involved with the EPC program, mainly to continue building relationships through the game he loves. “I’ll always remember the relationships; they’re special to me, the best part of this, and that’s
the biggest reason I’m sad to be leaving,� Asche said. “When you’re not around the kids everyday, you don’t get that opportunity, and that’s tough because it was always special with the kids. every year a group would come through and impact this program, always do everything I asked of them. “That camaraderie and those relationships with the great kids, great parents, and great fans, that’s what I’m saddest right now. But it’s time for me to go, and I want to make sure this current group gets the best opportunity to succeed.� EPC will lose only five seniors to graduation, so that success may come very quickly. “The cupboard is definitely not bare,� Hartman said. “Randy built this program back up, and he’s leaving it in a very good position. Whoever fills in for jim with keep moving in the right direction.� Hartman said that the principals at both Eastland and Pearl City will start the search for a new coach together, and that both school boards will be involved in the process of hiring Asche’s replacement.

Disabled hunters take double-digit deer PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SAVANNA – A group of 68 hunters with various physical disabilities harvested 21 deer Nov. 11 and 12 during a special hunt at the Lost Mound Unit of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge. In a news release, refugee staff said the harvest included 15 bucks and six does. The largest buck taken was a 193-pound, field-dressed weight buck with 11 points, by Maine resident Michael Liscomb. Paraplegics, quadriplegics, amputees, and other hunters took part.
Savanna residents who harvested deer were: Dennis Shaw, with a four-point buck weighing 139 pounds fielddressed, and one doe Dennis Kleckner, one eight-point buck, 152 pounds field-dressed Tim Anderson, one eight-point buck, 119 pounds field-dressed Paraolympian Charles Melton, a member of the 2016 American rugby team at the Rio de Janiero games, harvested an eight-point buck weighing 170 pounds field-dressed. Refuge and Down Deer Recovery helped hunters recover wounded deer.

West Carroll represented at national FFA convention PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF MOUNT CARROLL – West Carroll FFA members were among 65,000 attendees at the 90th annual National FFA Convention, from Oct. 24 -27 in Indianapolis. Attending from West Carroll were Ty Aljets, Jacob McCluckie, Deacon Hill, Aiden Bates, Brady Handel, Sophia Guenzler, Izzy Fredericks, Lakin Getz, Maddie Dauphin, and Briar Nevils. The convention’s theme was “I Can, We Will.” Activities started with tours Oct. 24 of the Funk Family Farm in Shirley, and the University of Illinois’ College of Agriculture. On Oct. 25, members could visit the National FFA Center, FFA Mega Shopping Mall, and FFA Expo and Career Show, with more than 450 booths for colleges and businesses. Later that afternoon, the opening convention session took place, with National FFA Advisor Steve Brown challenging all FFA members. The keynote speaker was Laila Ali, daughter of the late Muhammad Ali and an undefeated women’s boxer, TV host and author. On Oct. 26, members were able to attend Student Leadership Sessions in the morning and the Expo in the afternoon.

his candidacy in September to fill retiring Republican state Sen. Tim Bivins’ spot but has decided not to file for the March 20 primary. “In the months since I announced my intent to run, there have been a
number of changes at both the city of Dixon and within my businesses,” he said in a statement announcing his withdrawal from the race.

Morrison hopes to cut millions from sewer plant bill BY PAM EGGEMEIER Sauk Valley Media peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 MORRISON – More than 2 years after signing off on an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency loan for its new sewer plant, the city is still awaiting word on the exact terms. The pact with the EPA is for a 20-year loan for $15.16 million with an interest rate of 1.86 percent. The city, however, is seeking changes that could make a big difference in the overall cost of the project. Morrison has requested that the city be allowed to refinance the debt over 30 years instead of 20.
Next meeting The Morrison City Council next meets at 7 p.m. Monday in the Whiteside County board room at 400 N. Cherry St. in Morrison. Morrison is also seeking hardship status under the agency’s new rules, which could automatically wipe away a large percentage of the debt. A complex formula for assessing the city’s ability to pay for the plant could forgive 30 percent or more of the loan’s principal. City officials are hopeful that the EPA’s affordability criteria will uncover significant savings. “We should qualify for a significant amount of loan relief from hardship
status – it could be several million dollars,” Mayor Everett Pannier said. The EPA’s system also makes the general assumption that cities like Morrison, with a population of less than 5,000, are ill-equipped to pay for large infrastructure projects. “Morrison should automatically qualify for a 30 percent forgiveness of principal,” City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said. The city is trying to get two additional EPA
