Savanna-Sabula bridge opens after 2-year build PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF SAVANNA – After more than 2 years of construction, a new bridge over the Mississippi River connecting Savanna and Sabula, Iowa, was opened to traffic Friday. The Dale Gardner Veterans Memorial Bridge was clear for vehicles after a ribbon-cutting ceremony with transportation department personnel from both states, local officials and

community leaders. The bridge cost $80.6 million. “The new Savanna-Sabula bridge greatly improves safety, better connects our communities, and strengthens commerce in an important part of our state,” Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said. “The new design is modern and eye-catching, but the biggest benefits will be enhanced quality of life and more economic opportunity

for a vital gateway into Illinois.” The previous bridge, which opened in 1932 as a private toll bridge, will be dismantled and removed in the spring. At just 20 feet across with no room for shoulders, the old bridge was a safety concern because it was too narrow to accommodate bicycles or disabled vehicles, with wider vehicles often overlapping the opposite lane. Construction began in 2015

on the new bridge. The structure is more than 2,400 feet long, stretching from the middle of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife & Fish Refuge on the Iowa side, to the high bluffs of the Mississippi Palisades State Park in Illinois. It is 40 feet across, with two wider lanes and shoulders. The focal point of the new bridge will be the main span, a steel tied-arch over the river. While the Illinois Depart-

ment of Transportation served as the lead agency on the project, Iowa and Illinois share jurisdiction of the bridge. Both states worked closely with the cities of Savanna and Sabula to coordinate the new bridge alignment and construction activities, minimizing the work of the project while maximizing the potential for economic growth.

Adam Brumbaugh gave another presentation on the proposed tax referendum to beef up the struggling educational fund.He noted that the overall district tax rate will remain the same, that it is only the Educational fund that would see a hike. He said that even with the rate remaining the same, revenue has gone up because the district EAV has gone up roughly 3.4 percent this year, rising to about 122.5 million dollars. This development, Brumbaugh said, will generate over $250,000 more in tax

money for the district.He attributed the change to severalfactors; the rise in Savanna property values, farmland values going up, new construction,and additional railroad tracks. Before the vote, Superintendent Adam Brumbaugh said a tax levy increase is just one option for the board regarding future finances. He said the district needs between $1.2 million and $1.6 million in additional revenue over the next 3 years to meet collective bargaining agreement obligations. Trimming expenses is

He passed away in 2014, at the age of 65.

OBITUARIES&LOCAL NEWS FLORENCE E. MOSHURE MOUNT CARROLL – Florence Evelyn Moshure passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday Nov. 14, 2017, after a long illness. Florence was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Carroll County, to Eugene and Erma (Kenyon) Kruse. She graduated n 1952 from Lanark High School, and married her one and only love, Ralph Moshure, on Nov. 15, 1952, in Mount Carroll. Over the years, Florence busied herself being a mother, homemaker, helping Ralph with his various endeavors, and assisting at the family business. She enjoyed spending time at their farm in Wisconsin with Ralph and the family, and she loved following sports, especially watching the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Bulls.

Florence is survived by her four children, Larry (Karen) of Freeport, Deb (Brian) Bolen of Forreston, David (Lisa) of Erie, and Jane Shaw of Mount Carroll; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her siblings, Clarence “Sammy,” Ethel Smith, Mabel (Leroy) Hasbrook, and Harold “Bud;” and a sister-in-law, Vivian Rycus. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Ralph, on May 17, 2013. The funeral was Monday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Donna Hoffman officiating. Continued from Page 3 Board member Beverly Kilpatrick felt that fear of loss would be a stronger motivator. “The thought of what you’re going to lose if this doesn’t happen is really what I think should motivate people to vote for this.” Brumbaugh said the 50 cent tax hike would give the district “long-term sustainability” by generating about $610,000 annually. He emphasized that with the refinancing of the district bonds, the Bond and Interest portion of the district levy would be reduced by 20 cents, which would help to counteract the 50-cent hike, making the aggregate increase one of 30 cents, if all rates remain the same. He said the district’s

Education Fund rate is only the 24th highest among 36 Northwest region schools. The tax increase, if approved, would move that ranking up to 8th or 9th, Brumbaugh said. Board President Jerry Anderson said a group effort was needed by administrators and the community to inform the public about the benefits of the rate hike, including the fact that a 50 cent hike didn’t mean the district would always ask for that much, depending on its future needs. “We need to make them think about it,” Tipton said.“To understand the consequences of their vote.”

vention in Indianapolis. The students toured a mineral museum, the University of Illinois, the Expo Center in Indianapolis, and other venues. They learned about welding, and about various colleges and post-high school career opportunities.They also attended a learning session called “What’s in Your Closet?” during which they learned how to choose a wardrobe for an interview. Mathey said that 450 booths are set up at the convention, running the gamut from colleges, trade schools and businesses. Anderson said the board was “very proud of our FFA.”

Nursing home staff thank responders BY LUANN BREWINGTON Administrator, Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll On Oct. 28, our community responded in a massive collaborative effort as a full scale evacuation drill took place at the Good Samaritan SocietyMount Carroll. Planning for this emergency exercise began 2 years ago as GSS staff and the local emergency management team met regularly to strengthen our disaster plan with intense focus on planning for the center’s drill for the past 6 months. The emergency evacuation drill was successfully and safely completed and would not have been possible without the unified efforts of the following: the Carroll County Emergency Management Team, Greg Miller – Carroll County Emergency Services & Disaster Agencies coordinator, first responders from Mount Carroll, Savanna, Thomson, Lanark, Shannon, Chadwick, Milledgeville, Stockton, Mount Carroll Police, Carroll County Sheriff, Illinois State Police, Mount Carroll Fire Department, Savanna Fire Department, Thomson Fire Department, Charles’ Farm, Carroll County Transit, West Carroll School District and Carroll County Health Department. We thank the Church of God for providing a place of shelter for the evacuation and the ladies of the Church of God for providing lunch for 200 first responders and volunteers. We are grateful for the tremendous response during this full-scale evacuation drill from GSS staff, family members and friends for

serving as stand-ins for our residents, GSS Advisory Board and GSS Auxiliary members. Thank you to our neighbors for your cooperation and understanding. Again, a huge thank you to all emergency management team members, GSS staff, volunteers and community partners for participating in this amazingly well-organized evacuation drill. We will use what we have learned to strengthen our emergency plan to ensure the safety of our residents, staff and community.

FFA and sports BY NATALIE BROWN Milledgeville High School When you think of FFA, do you only think of farms and farmer kids who just want to learn about tractors and corn? If you do, I want to show you the whole other side of what FFA really is, and how it can be just as beneficial as sports can be. Both of these extracurricular activities have many benefits, but I want to show why FFA should not be put behind sports. I am well aware of the benefits that sports can provide. I have been actively involved since I was a little girl, my brother and sister have both been in sports, and my parents were also actively involved. Playing sports, you learn leadership and learn how to work well with others. You learn that communication is important not just on the field, but off the field as well. The list could go on and on about

what you can learn, but some people do not realize that FFA provides these same benefits. I have been in FFA since I was a freshman in high school. Really the only reason that I heard about it was because my older brother had joined it when he started high school. I went into this organization thinking I would not fit in because I did not know a thing about farming. After about a week I began to realize what FFA really was, and everything that I could learn from it. Leadership was the skill that I started to gain right away. Just like in sports there are leadership roles and leadership opportunities. Becoming an FFA officer was where I began to really become a leader. I took charge of what our chapter was doing and how certain things were being ran.

The big ticket item – a 16-pound turkey – came in at a total of $22.38 this year. That’s roughly $1.40 per pound, a decrease of 2 cents per pound, or a total of 36 cents per whole turkey, compared to 2016. The shopping list for Farm Bureau’s informal survey includes turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and coffee and milk, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10 with plenty for leftovers. Missiles’ Waite signs to run at Illinois State BY ADAM FEINER Sauk Valley Media afeiner@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5550 This past Wednesday was the last day of the early signing period for high school studentathletes in the Class of 2018 to decide where they wanted to continue their athletic careers in college. Athletes who weren’t sure could wait until the spring to sign. Milledgeville senior Rebecca Waite knew where she wanted to go and figured, “Why wait?” The three-sport star will continue her track & field career at Illinois State University in Normal in the spring of 2019, specializing in the sprints. She has yet to take her official visit, but took a normal trip to see campus and visit with her future coaches and teammates. “They were really interested, and I was interested already,” Waite said. “So I said ‘Let’s get it done now.’ It’s a good town with a friendly atmosphere. They had a great coaching and team that I met, and they’re the next level I was looking for.” Waite will become the first

She will also be the first track athlete from the Milledgeville-Eastland co-op to go D-I since 2011 Eastland grad Kevin Glastetter signed with Loyola. “It definitely makes me stand out at a small school,” Waite said. “But no matter where you go to school, you’re going to have to work hard to go to a big school.” Milledgeville-Eastland girls track & field coach Jason Wroble knew pretty early on that Waite had the potential to turn into a Division I athlete. “She performed really well her freshman year at the conference meet, and got even stronger as a sophomore,” Wroble said. “Sometimes there’s a regression between those years, but not with her.” Waite has made it to the state meet in Charleston in her first 3 years of high school. She won the NUIC 100-meter dash title her freshman year, and qualified for state in the 100, 200 and long jump. Her 11th-place finish in the long jump finals was

a sign of greater things to come. In the spring of 2016, Waite burst onto the scene in Charleston, finishing second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 at state. She won the long jump and 100 title at the Bureau Valley Sectional, and was the 100, 200 and 400 champ at the NUIC meet. Waite picked up second-place finishes in the 200 and 400 at last spring’s state meet, and also finished sixth in the 100. She qualified for state by winning the long jump, 100, 200 and 400 titles at the Bureau Valley Sectional, and won all four events at the NUIC meet the week before to lead the Missiles to the team title. The coaching staff at ISU easily noted Waite’s dominance on the track, but marveled at her overall athleticism and passion to not specialize in just track & field. She was selected to the allNUIC East first team in volleyball after her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, and was an all-NUIC East honorable mention pick in basketball after averaging 11.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Missiles.

Sign-ups wanted for winter nature tours PRAIRIE ADVOCATE STAFF APPLE RIVER – Eagle Nature Foundation is accepting registration for bus tours to view bald eagles in February and nature and historical sites in March in Nebraska. Two 4-hour tours will take place at 8 a.m. Feb. 10 and 24, each leaving from Best Western Motel, 9923 U.S. Highway 20, Galena. Terrance Ingram, ENF president, will lead the trip, discussing eagles’ life histories and efforts to prevent their extinction. The cost for each tour is $75 per seat per adult and $50 for children younger than 17. Groups of four or more will receive a discount of $65 per adult and $40 per child. Galena motels offering discounted rates for tour participants include Best Western, Country Inn & Suites, and Ramada.

Freeport business to help pantries

The Nebraska trip will be from March 12 to 15, leaving at 8 a.m. from the Ramada parking lot, 11383 U.S. Route 20, Galena. The trip will stop at the 1865 Steamboat Bertrand, the Mormon Trail Winter Headquarters, Stuhr Museum and Pioneer Village, Nebraska’s World War II prisoner of war camp, Fort Kearney, Hastings Museum, and the world’s largest display of whooping cranes. Between stops, Ingram will discuss bald eagles and other birds The tour also will stop at several prairie dog villages. A $400 down payment per person is due by Feb. 1. The cost is $895 per person, or $845 for double occupancy. Groups of four or more will receive a discount of $795, or $745 double occupancy. CLINTON, Iowa – Ashford University Field will receive a facelift for next season.

In a news release, Erik Oas, Lumber Kings Director of Media Relations, said the ball club is working with the Clinton County Development Association, the City of Clinton, and the Friends of Riverview Stadium to make changes to the 81-year-old ballpark. “During the course of the offseason, the main concourse will see new concrete laid, a freshly painted facade, new picnic garden pergolas, high definition starting lineup, standings, and league leaders monitors, and the stadium’s first ever ribbon board,” Oas

Also, when you are an officer you learn what people like, and how they like things done, so not only are you learning to become a leader, but you are also learning people skills. You learn how to communicate with your team, advisor, and your whole chapter. You communicate about everything that is planned. Each month there are a series of contest that you can sign up for, and you need to be able to get the word out about them. You can also learn a whole new set of skills. These contests range from judging high quality meat to knowing how to properly restrain an animal to keep yourself safe and the animal safe. Being in the organization you can learn about almost anything you want. FFA not only gives

Being in FFA also helps make a college application look better, and could possibly increase your chances into getting into the college that you want. Also, you get the chance to travel to some different states. National Convention, which is held either in Louisville, Kentucky, or Indianapolis, can allow you to talk to colleges and let them know that you are interested. This convention can also help with finding a career. They have career booths set up all over and you can walk around and go to the ones that interest you, and see if that is actually something you may possibly want to do for the rest of your life. If you were to run for a national office, you will have the opportunity to go all over the U.S. and even possibly visit Puerto Rico.

in the Missouri Valley Conference. Waite has never been one to slow down in a sprint, so complacency shouldn’t be an issue according to her or her current coach. Just because she’s signed to a Division I program doesn’t mean she’s going to ease up as she nears the finish line of her high school career. “It should motivate her With all of these qualities you can gain from FFA I believe that it should be as glorified as any of the sports that schools have. Our FFA chapter in the last 4 years has been absolutely incredible. We have taken our dairy judging team to state and placed third overall, our vet science team went to state, food science went to state and placed eighth overall, and just this year we went to state for soil judging. I myself, have gone to state twice on our dairy judging team, and went to the vet science team. Our team this last year had one-member placed fourth overall, another placed seventh, and one had placed sixteenth overall. Our FFA chapter is out here doing amazing things, but we do not get the recognition that we deserve. People judge the organization right away thinking that it is only for farmers. If schools would glorify FFA as much as they do for sports, then maybe

There are so many incredible opportunities and skills that can be gained from joining. This is why I believe that FFA should be glorified just as much as sports. It cannot be put to the back any longer, it deserves to be put in the spotlight so many more can benefit from all that this great organization brings.

Opening day is April 7, 2018, with the LumberKings playing against the Kane County Cougars. The LumberKings club is the only remaining charter member of the Midwest League, and are preparing for its 63rd season in the league and their 10th as an affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Since the club’s inception in 1937, 274 former Clinton players have made it to the major leagues. The LumberKings play at Ashford University Field, 537 Ballpark Drive, off of Sixth Avenue North.
