LANARK – Lanark has a new utility clerk – and she should be familiar with helping a city take care of business. She’s served as Shannon’s village clerk for more than 20 years. The City Council voted unanimously Sept. 5 to appoint Denise Bormann of Shannon as utility clerk, a week after Sabrina Yoeckel resigned from her dual role as city clerk and utility clerk, amid veiled threats of “legal
proceedings� and allegations of fraud. The council went into executive session for a half hour before emerging with its decision. Bormann, 55, has been the village clerk in Shannon since 1994. She’ll continue in that role, while setting up office hours in Lanark, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, effective immediately. She’ll earn $13,000 as Lanark’s utility clerk. Mayor Ken Viglietta said previously that the dual position Yoeckel held could be split into separate positions – a city clerk and utility clerk – and that he would appoint someone to serve out the remainder of Yoeckel’s term as city clerk, through April 2021. “The way our ordinance reads, the position can be the same
person, but doesn’t have to be,� he said. “The utilities part of it, if it’s not the same person, is appointed by the mayor, with Denise Bormann the consent of the council.� For the foreseeable future, Viglietta will split the city clerk’s duties with Bormann. He said his hope is that they could fill the position in a month. “It all depends on who comes forward,� he said. As of Sept. 5, there was one candidate, but Viglietta said he was not at liberty to disclose a name, since the person was only a “maybe.� The city clerk’s position pays $11,000 a year. Yoeckel, 20, was elected
city clerk in April, after Jackie Hawbecker, who held the position for 19 years, decided not to run again. Before her resignation, Yoeckel was working with city treasurer Carol Kruzek to determine who owed what part of about $84,000 in unpaid water bills found in late April in a filing cabinet drawer at City Hall. The city won’t issue water bills for this month, while it works on getting its billing issues sorted out, but will send out combined statements for 2 months’ service next month. Those bills will be due by Oct. 20, according to a notice on the city website. Concerns about Yoeckel’s job performance – that she was not checking the mail, making bank deposits or completing QuickBooks accounting training –
were raised publicly at the Aug. 1 City Council meeting. At the next meeting on Aug. 15, Yoeckel told council members that she was making deposits, gathering the mail and had completed her training. “Everything had kind of calmed down,� Yoeckel said previously. Then her attorney called her on Aug. 28 and told her “they’re going to go ahead with certain proceedings,� she said. She signed her letter of resignation the next day at City Hall, with Viglietta, City Attorney Ed Mitchell, also a notary, and an unnamed Lanark police officer present. By state law, if an elected official resigns in a municipality with fewer than 500,000 people, the resignation must be in writing, signed by the person resigning, and notarized.

FREEPORT – A city alderman is running for the state’s 89th District seat following the incumbent’s recent decision to pursue another office. Andrew Andrew Chesney, who Chesney was elected to the Freeport City Council in 2015, aims to replace state Rep. Brian Stewart next year. Stewart, a 59-year-old Freeport Republican, was appointed to the position in 2013 and announced his candidacy last week for outgoing Dixon GOP state Sen. Tim Bivins’ 45th District seat. As an at-large alderman, Chesney, 35, said he has focused on prioritizing city funding for public infrastructure, blight reduction and law enforcement in Freeport as well as streamlining city services, improving policies to foster economic development, and reducing taxes and fees. Voters signed off on
transitioning from a mayoral form of government to a city-manager form last year. “We’ve made great strides over the past 2 years in changing how Freeport’s government operates,� Chesney said in a news release. “It’s that same commitment to change, progress and working together to solve problems that I want to take with me to Springfield.� Chesney is a division sales manager with Freeport vending machine manufacturer Seaga Manufacturing and is chairman of the Stephenson County Republican Central Committee. He was born in Freeport, raised in Shannon and graduated from Eastland High School in Lanark in
2000. Chesney received his bachelor’s degree in communication from Arizona State University in 2004. He married his wife, Kelly, in 2013. “My family, my home, my church, my business, all my priorities are focused here in Northwest Illinois,� he said. “I want to make sure that the opportunities that I have been afforded in this part of Illinois are available for generations to come.� Chesney will compete against Democrat Ann Williams, a 51-year-old professional photographer from Galena, who announced her run in June. The 89th Illinois House District is made up of parts of Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago Counties.

Bill Fawell, 63, of Galena, a real estate broker, wants to take another shot at the seat, but this time he plans to put his name on the ballot. He declared himself a writein Libertarian candidate in 2014, but lessons from that experience have him running as a Republican. “I learned exactly what Ron Paul found out – if you want to make a change in government, especially in Illinois, you have to go with the two major parties,” Fawell said. He has compared his political leanings to Paul, the former Texas congressman who ran for president once as a Libertarian, and twice as a GOP candidate. Fawell wound up with 16 votes in 2014, as Bustos took nearly 56 percent of the vote in defeating Republican Bobby Schilling a second time. “You need 698 signatures as a Republican, and as a Libertarian I needed 24,000, and probably more to survive a challenge,” Fawell said. “By the time you get around to campaigning, it’s too late.” Fawell first must defeat Galesburg businessman Mark Kleine in the March primary for the right to challenge the incumbent. Kleine has no prior political experience, but is selling his business experience as a plus in carrying out his agenda of cutting government spending and creating jobs. In February, Bustos

Fawell said his desire to run is driven by two bills in the House, that if enacted, would change America. “These critical bills would change the daily operating structure of the federal government, and give control of government back to the people,” he said. One of those bills is the Regulation from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act, which supporters believe is an important piece of regulatory reform. The REINS Act would require Congress to approve new major regulations and review those already in place. The second piece of legislation on Fawell’s radar is the Federal Transparency Act. That bill would require the Government Accountability Office to complete audits of the Federal Reserve Board and Federal Reserve banks within a year. The other part of Fawell’s “Libertarian legislation” is the institution of term limits. “Most of our laws are written by lobbyists,” Fawell said. “Whether you voted for Bernie Sanders or Donald Trump, the 2016 election was about Americans voting against the system.” Illinois’ 17th Congressional District covers Carroll, Fulton, Henderson, Henry, Jo Daviess, Knox, Mercer, Rock Island, Stephenson, Warren and Whiteside counties. term expires next year. Obituaries Mary K. Rapp MOUNT CARROLL – Mary Kathleen Rapp, 74, longtime resident of Mount Carroll, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society Mount Carroll Nursing Facility, with her loving family by her side. Mary was born Nov. 17, 1942, in Chicago, the daughter of Leslie and Marie (Connelly) Janco. They moved in 1949 to Bellwood, where Mary graduated from St. Simeon Grade School. She was a 1960 graduate of Nazareth Academy of LaGrange Park. She received a history degree from Loyola University in 1964. On July 3, 1965, Mary married John Walter Rapp Jr., in Bellwood. In 1965, they moved to Mount Carroll, where they raised three children and celebrated 45 years of marriage. Mary “never let grass grow under her feet.” After graduating from college, she was an elementary school teacher in Cicero and Mount Carroll. She worked as a substitute teacher for 16 years, and participated in many church, charitable, and community organizations, including SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church,

Church Ladies Society, Regional Board of School Trustees, Mount Carroll School Board, Cooperative Extension, Mount Carroll Community Foundation, Knights of Holy Sepulchre, the Dorothy Footitt West Carroll High School Scholarship, and the Vaughn Hungerford West Carroll High School Scholarship. She thoroughly enjoyed life with her husband and best friend, “Jack,” their children, and their grandchildren. She traveled throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, traced her heritage back to County Clare, Ireland, and central Europe, and delighted everyone with her delicious cooking and baking, her home was always a place for friends and family to gather. She was especially thankful for friends with whom she shared her time on earth. Mary is survived by her three sons, Mark (Tamara) of Greeley, Colorado, Matthew (Mindy) of German Town Hills, and Martin (Amy) of Mount Carroll; and her grandchildren, Sydney, John W. Rapp III, Leslie, Emma, Colton, and Hayley. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Julie and Maura; and a sister-in-law, Sue Ellen Brayton. The funeral was Monday at SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church in Mount

SHANNON – Fred F. “Papa” Thompson, 80, of Shannon, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017. He was born July 26, 1937, in Bogota, Illinois, to Clarence and Alta (Ware) Thompson. Fred married Judi Miller on Nov. 29, 1985, in Ogle County. “I love you to the moon and back.” He was a member of the Baptist church. Fred graduated from Forreston High School, where he still attended most sporting events. He was an avid sports fan of all Illinois teams (except the Chicago White Sox). He retired as a union carpenter from Sjostrom and drove truck for Rogers Ready Mix, Jeff Bocker, and Carroll Service Co.. He loved landscaping and reading books. He also enjoyed golfing with his favorite Green Bay Packer Fan, Don Schrader, and spending time with other great friends, Chase Giedd and Family, Jeri Taggs, Lori Murphy, and Selwyn. Fred is survived by his

SPRINGFIELD – The enterprise zone application for Whiteside/ Carroll counties was approved Sept. 6 during a meeting of the state’s Enterprise Zone Board in Springfield. Betty Steinert, who had been the Whiteside/ Carroll enterprise zone administrator since 1999, also wrote the application. Steinert is a past president of the Illinois Enterprise Zone Association. The current enterprise zone designation was set to expire Dec. 31. Twelve applications were on the board’s list Sept. 6, and only six were approved.

Veterans committee request denied BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate
Animosity between factions of the Carroll County Board and the county’s Veterans Assistance Commission resurfaced Thursday during budget discussions. The tensions began about 13 years ago and spiked almost 4 years ago when members of the VAC Board sued the county for increased funding to cover staff wages and expenses. That suit continues in litigation. “There was a tax levy that was approved by this board in 2004, but never implemented,” VAC Superintendent Bill Hanna told the County Board during its meeting Thursday. “So, we are asking that you implement that .03 percent tax levy that was approved in ’04, and we believe that will give us more than adequate funds to take care of our veterans and fund our office.” He also proposed an alternative which carried an increase in dues, increases in funding for mileage and trainings, increases to update equipment, an annual increase in salaries, and a new budget line item that would in effect officially establish an administrative assistant position in the VAC office. County Board Chair Kevin Reibel agreed the state had mandated an increase of .03 percent, and the board had recognized that mandate by voting to allow an increaase up to .03 percent. But it never implemented an
increase, he said. “That has been the whole lead-in to all the discussions we’ve had over the years,” VAC Board Chair Ellis Boughton said. “If that increase was implemented above .02 percent, because .02 percent would probably be sufficient to run the office, but .03 percent is what is suggested through the state mandate. If that was implemented, then these situations that we’ve faced over the last 13 years wouldn’t exist.” He said the VAC would run its own budget, do its own payroll, its taxes, and all the things currently done through the County Board. “We don’t seek to go and spend all that money in a random fashion, but we don’t know the future just as this board doesn’t know what may happen in the future,” Hanna said. “There would probably be a period of time where we would bank that, and as we go from one year to the next we would adjust that levy according to what we needed.” Following considerable discussion covering the VAC’s perceived possibility of a need for increased services, the board voted against the requested increases and against adding a VAC administrative assistant as a line item to the budget. In other budget related matters, both the state’s attorney’s office and the county assessor’s pffice requested a 3 percent wage

increase and a 9 percent increase to cover insurance costs. The coroner’s office requested a 3 percent wage increase and a 13 percent increase for travel. And, Extension, the Historical Society, and the Blackhawk Hills Regional Office all declined to request increases. A proposed draft budget is viewable on the county website. In other business, State’s Attorney Scott Brinkmeier informed the board of a delay in the VOCA grant, which will impact his office’s ability to pay its victim’s assistant. “We learned late in July that there is going to be a funding lapse,” Brinkmeier said. “The current VOCA grant will expire Sept. 30, 2017, and the next time I can receive VOCA funds won’t
be until Jan. 1, 2018. I will have a 3-month shortfall where I won’t have money for my victim’s assistant. “ He asked the board for a budget amendment to the Victim’s Impact Fund that would increase appropriations from that fund to $1,500, which when combined with other funds already appropriated will cover the cost of his victim’s assistant through November. “She will not be working in December, and I will not start her back up until I know I have the VOCA grant approved for FY 2018,” he said. The board voted unanimously to approve the amendment. The Carroll County Board will have its next scheduled meeting at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 21 in the Small Courtroom in the County Courthouse.

“The board could have approved all of the requests or none of them, and they don’t have to give a reason for their decision,” Steinert said. The board had one previous meeting to discuss the applications, and Steinert said she left the first one feeling pretty good about Whiteside/ Carroll’s chances. The designation is good for 15 years, and in year 13, applications are due for a 10-year extension. The process has been extremely competitive because the 30-year life spans on many of the state’s oldest enterprise zones were supposed to expire in 2014. The state, however, backed up the expiration dates by 2 years, and those applications converged with 17 more zones that were to expire in 2017
and 2018. The Whiteside/Carroll enterprise zone offers incentives to a wide range of businesses, from industrial parks to small downtown retailers. It includes some of the area’s largest employers, including Walmart Distribution Center and Wahl Clipper. The villages of Tampico and Milledgeville have been added to the new enterprise zone. In 1987, Sterling put in the first application, and 1 year later, the Whiteside County Enterprise Zone was approved with the cities of Sterling, Rock Falls, Morrison, and several rural areas. In 1990, parts of Fulton, Prophetstown and Lyndon were added to the mix. In 1991, parts of Carroll County, including Savanna and Thomson, were brought into the zone, and areas in Mount Carroll in 2003.

While I may not be in the office, I will be available via my cellphone, the number for which is listed on the office voicemail system. Right now, I know I will not be in the office on Tuesday, Sept. 19. We are taking orders for this fall’s Ag in the Classroom Fundraiser. We are again doing a freezer meal program. We have had very positive feedback on this program this past year. The deadline to order meals is Sept. 18. You can stop by our office and pick up a set of 10 meals. All you will need to do is take them home and cook them! All instructions are provided. The meals included this time in the pack include: Hickory Smoked Pulled Pork, Smoked Meatloaf, Pulled Chicken, Swedish Meatballs, Bourbon Chicken with Green Beans, Cheesy Chicken and Stuffing, Tator Tot Casserole, Lasagna, Beef Stew, and Chicken Pot Pie. All of the topics Melinda teaches includes hands-on activities to help teach students where their food, clothes, and more come from. If you have not had the opportunity, I encourage you to ask an elementary student what Miss Melinda has taught them. You will surely hear the excitement in their voice as they describe what they learned. How is it fall already? It is time for football and pumpkin spice! Fall also means it will soon be time to order holiday fruit and nuts, the 2018 calendars will be coming in before we know it, and it is turning into candle season. We have been reviewing our candle sales for the past year, and they may be on the chopping block. There was once a day, I know I have been around a long time, where we sold many, many candles. The need was there to reorder every other month. Times have changed. We see it more and more every day. Our candle sales have dropped greatly this past year.

Alcohol and judgment The teenage brain is still developing. Alcohol can impair the parts of the brain that control the following: Motor coordination This includes the ability to talk, drive and process information. Impulse control Drinking lowers inhibitions and increases the chances that a person will do something they will regret when they are sober. Memory Impaired recollection and even blackouts can occur when too much alcohol has been consumed. Judgment and decision-making capacity Drinking may lead young people to engage in risky behaviors including getting into a car with someone who has been drinking. These behaviors can result in illness, injury and even death.
Risks associated with underage
Most kids have not yet developed the “cut-off” switch that makes them go to sleep or pass out from too much drinking. They can consume dangerous amounts of alcohol before they realize it’s too late. This can result in alcohol poisoning, which can cause difficulty breathing, unconsciousness and death. Binge drinking can and does kill – killing as many young people as allother drugs combined. If a young person ever passes out from drinking, 911 should be called for immediate medical attention.

lcohol use among children is strongly correlated with violence, poor academic performance and other harmful behaviors. Education alone will not keep your kids from using alcohol because there are constant pressures and opportunities to drink. Further, the areas of the brain that encourage impulsivity and risk-taking develop early in a teen, while the areas that improve self-control don’t develop until the very late teens or early twenties. You must stay actively involved as a parent in bonding with your teen, setting boundaries and monitoring to help your teen remain alcohol-free.

Children who start drinking before age 15 are 12 times more likely to be injured while under the influence of alcohol and 10 times more likely to be in a fight after drinking, compared with those who wait to drink until they are 21.
Alcohol use by teens is a strong predictor of unprotected sexual activity and unwanted sexual advances.
School failure Teens who use alcohol have higher rates of academic problems and poor performance than nondrinkers. Among eighth graders, higher truancy rates are associated with greater rates of alcohol use.
Illicit drug use More than 67 percent of young people who start drinking before the age of 15 will try an illicit drug. Children who drink are 7.5 times more likely to use an illicit drug, 22 times more likely to use marijuana and 50 times more likely to use cocaine than children who never drink.
Monitoring
Be aware that studies show kids are more att risk for drinking alcohol between the hours of 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., while many parents are still at work. Find ways to check on your kids when you are not around, either with phone calls, text messaging or through a neighbor dropping by.

The Evangelical Good Samaritan Society opened its first home in Arthur, North Dakota, 94 years ago. Over the years, the Society has grown from serving a handful of residents to being the nation’s largest not-forprofit provider of care and
services for seniors. The Good Samaritan Society-Mount Carroll doors opened in 1970 and the 47th Founder’s Day will be celebrated with a special program Sunday. Starting at 1 p.m., Professor B3, Steve Behrens, will entertain with

The Thunder (2-1) broke a scoreless tie on a 1-yard plunge by Hartman on the first offensive play of the second quarter. It was set up when Amboy-LaMoille failed to execute a punt from deep in its own territory, as Reece Vaessen was unable to handle a low snap from center. That was the Clippers’ third turnover of the game at that point, but the first one West Carroll was able to cash in for points. The Thunder took that 6-0 lead into halftime. West Carroll was held in check by a stout Amboy-LaMoille defense until midway through the third quarter, when it embarked on a 13-play, 94-yard drive that was capped off by an 8-yard run by Hartman. Amboy-LaMoille (0-3), however, fought back with its only scoring drive of the game. An 80-yard, 11-play march was capped off by a 1-yard sneak by

The Amboy-LaMoille defense then forced a 3-and-out near midfield, only to get stuck behind the 8-ball after a 48-yard punt by Kody Plattenberger was downed at the 2-yard line. He was subbing as the punter for his twin brother, Kaleb, who was injured in the first half. “ My brother is always talking to me about how he’s got the better leg,” Kody Plattenberger said, “and how he can punt better. That was a pretty nice punt. It pinned them pretty deep.” Amboy did get one first down to get out of the shadow of its own goal line, but was soon forced to punt. West Carroll scored two touchdowns in the final 4 minutes of the game, both on short runs by Hartman. The second score was set up by an interception by Derek Tracy. Hartman finished with 18 carries for 95 yards. He did the bulk of his damage in the second half, with 14 rushes for 84 yards.
The four touchdowns is a career high, topping the three he scored the previous week against DurandPecatonica. “In the locker room at halftime, coach told me I was going to get
the ball a lot,” Hartman said. “My plan was to just run mean and not slow down for anyone. That’s what I did.”

SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Continued . . . The Clippers were unable to get too much going all night against the West Carroll defense. Hart threw for just 58 yards, and he was picked off twice. The running game, meanwhile, produced 173 yards, but it took 44 carries to accumulate that yardage. Ben Rhine was the workhorse, with 28 rushes for 118 yards. “We got back in it at 12-6,” Amboy-LaMoille coach Gary Jones said, “but we can’t move the ball. We can’t run the ball. That’s been our inability for three games. Our forte is we run the ball, and we can’t do it.” Stockton 22, Milledgeville 20: The Missiles made a couple of big stops in their NUIC Upstate matchup against Stockton on Friday, but needed to come up with one more in a loss to the Blackhawks. Stockton took over at its own 31-yard line with 6:12 left in the game and a 2-point lead, and pulled all but 1:37 of that off the clock on a 10-play drive. In a last-gasp effort with no timeouts, the Missiles completed three passes to get the ball close to midfield, but turned it over on downs. The Blackhawks also had two other drives last more than 6 minutes in the game, starving the Missiles of possession. “We wanted to keep the ball in our hands,” Stockton coach Jesse Snyder said. “We made a couple adjustments from a blocking standpoint. Basically, just execution. Up front we had to execute, and we did that.” Stockton’s Colin Dvorak rushed 30 times for 168 yards. Chase Rowe added 10 carries for 75 yards, and Jeremiah Hermann rushed 10 times for 61 yards. Stockton led 14-0 after scoring on its first two drives, but after the second score, Christian TomsSmith returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards to set the Missiles up at the Stockton 11-yard line. “I muffed it, so when I gathered myself, I just scanned the field,” he said. “I saw a hole, so I took it, and my blockers did a great job opening up a hole for me.” Two plays later, Carson Boyer put Milledgeville on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run. Milledgeville scored again on its next drive, as Jack Munz hit TomsSmith for a 35-yard passing score. After Blayne Kappes recovered a fumble to end Stockton’s first drive of the second half, Boyer took a sweep left and outran every Blackhawk defender up the sideline for a 71-yard touchdown to make it 20-14 Missiles. “We were having our line step it up, and they were doing a pretty good job today,” Boyer said. Milledgeville stopped Stockton’s next drive on downs at the Missiles’ 9-yard line, but after Milledgeville went three-and-out, Stockton used the short field to score, Dvorak going up the middle on the 2-point conversion for the final margin of victory. SEPT.. 5 Milledgeville 2, Polo 0 (25-23, 25-18): Good teams fight through adversity, and Milledgeville volleyball coach Kurt Folk was pleased to see his team display that quality Tuesday night. The Missiles rallied in each set after calls went against them, and pulled out a hardfought victory over rival Polo in the NUIC East opener for both teams. “The mark of a good player, the mark of a good team, is they fight back from adversity,” Folk said. “They showed good character today, didn’t get down when things weren’t going their way, but persevered.” The first instance came late in the first set. After a missed call on a Polo touch of a Kortney Queckboerner spike that went out of bounds tied the score at 21-all, the Marcos (0-4, 0-1) took advantage. Freshman Becca Wagner tipped a kill, then senior Rilley Peterson served an ace for a 23-21 lead, forcing a Milledgeville timeout. The Missiles (2-1, 1-0) came storming back after that. A service error made it 23-22 Polo, then Jocelyn Folkers ripped a kill to tie it at 23. Rebecca Waite’s block gave Milledgeville set point, then she slammed a kill to finish it off. “You know what you’re going to get with her,” Folk said of Waite, who finished with 11 kills, 2 blocks and 5 assists. “She can get up and put it down, and they didn’t have a block at the net that could stop her, so we took advantage.” That was especially evident midway through the second set. After a kill by Cassie Bushman, an ace by Zoie Sellers, and a kill by Wagner put Polo ahead 8-7, Waite took over. The senior hitter slammed three straight kills for a 10-8 lead, then after Kaleigh Tarbill’s kill broke a 10-10 tie, Waite slammed two more kills and stuffed a block for a 14-10 Milledgeville lead. The next play should have been a Folkers kill, but another Polo touch at the net was missed, giving Polo
a sideout. But Folkers slammed the next one to get the serve back, then Queckboerner tipped one over and Waite got a pair of points on Marco miscues for an 18-11 lead. “We used the calls that didn’t go our way to push harder and get the next points,” Waite said. “We just kept fighting, found a rhythm and kept it going. “My shoulder was hurting at the start, just a little sore, and I was laying off a little bit, but I got it loosened up as the match went on.” The Marcos kept fighting, getting aces from Mallory Patterson and Peterson to get within 19-15, then a Wagner block to make it 21-17, but the Missiles had too much firepower. Smith served an ace for a 23-17 lead, then set up Waite for a kill for match point. The teams traded errors to end it. Folkers finished with 5 kills and a block for the Missiles, and Smith dished 15 assists to go with a pair of kills and 5 service points. Queckboerner had 3 kills and 6 points, and Sabreena Hartman led the way with 8 digs and served for 5 points. Peterson had 4 of Polo’s 10 kills, and also served 2 aces. Sellers had 6 points and 3 digs, Bushman also added 3 digs, and Wagner finished with 4 points, 2 kills and a block. Patterson dished 6 assists, served 3 points and slammed a kill. Le-Win 2, Pearl City 0 (25-17, 25-22): Le-Win’s Madilyn Schultz had 9 kills and 5 digs to lead the Lady Panthers to the two-set win over Pearl City on the road. Teammate Carmen DeVries added 6 kills and Jaden Julius added 5. For the Lady Wolves, Tyra Clark had 5 kills, 4 digs and 1 block. Her sister Tia added 4 kills a pair of service aces and a dig. Fulton 2, Morrison 0 (25-11, 25-22): After making many service errors in a loss last week to Bureau Valley, a point of emphasis for the Fulton Steamers would certainly be firing better serves. In a TRAC West match at Morrison, the Steamers’ work behind the service line paid off. Fulton reeled off 13 ace serves, including 7 in the second set of a win over the Filles. Emily Schipper was the first Steamer to serve in the match, and her jump serve proved difficult for the Fillies (0-8, 0-1 TRAC West) to return. Brooke Huizenga opened the match with the first of her matchhigh 6 kills before Schipper stepped behind the line. Her pair of aces put Fulton up 3-0, which proved to be enough to keep the Steamers (3-1, 1-0) ahead in the first set. Schipper served up 5 aces, including 3 in a row in the second set. Genna Stage served up 4 aces, Huizenga and Kylee Sweenie each had 2, and Kearston Norman added 1 – which started off the second set. The Fillies, who had only 1 kill in the first set, came back after Norman’s ace and strung together 6 points – the first 5 coming on Steamer hitting errors, and the last coming on Makayla Troutman’s kill from the left corner. Morrison’s 6-1 lead would be its largest of the set, but the Fillies trailed by one at 20-19 at the latest. “That has been our biggest goals this season, and it will continue to be working on the transition from Game 1 to Game 2, and to work on the mentality to recover,” Morrison coach Julia Deter said. “Game 1 so
far this season has been our weakest game of the match. Fulton’s always a good rivalry, and the girls were extra pumped for this match.” Morrison held onto its second-set lead until a pair of Stage aces put Fulton ahead 12-11. The Fillies soon regained the lead after a Fulton service error – one of just 5 for the Steamers – and a hitting error, before Emily Szabo’s tip from center put her team up by two. However, a Schipper kill from the left corner narrowed the lead to one, and 4 consecutive hitting errors gave the Steamers their final lead. Szabo led the Fillies with 5 kills and 3 blocks up front, and with 9 digs defensively. MacKenzie Petkus led the Fillies with 20 assists, and Sweenie led Fulton with 11.
