MILLEDGEVILLE – You’d be hard-pressed to have a county fair without car wrecks, garden tractor pulls and, of course, something deep fried – Oreos, anyone? But it’d be downright impossible to have a fair without people – be it patrons, volunteers, or all the clubs and folks who put their hard work on display. If you happened to be at Schell Park in Milledgeville this past week, you found all of those things, and lots of them, at the 65th annual Carroll County Fair. Fair President Liz Hutchison said organizers’ goal was simple: “Offer the best we can in every area� – but reaching that goal was anything but simple.
Hutchison said more than 50 volunteers helped bring the show together. “We were thrilled to have them. They were a great group.â€? The hard work paid off. Hutchison said fair attendance was good, with thousands of visitors heading to the fairgrounds from the fair’s first day on Aug. 6 to its last day on Saturday. There was plenty for them to see and do: a petting zoo, carnival rides, a demolition derby, horse shows, music, judging, bingo, tractor pulls, Funky Munky wrestling, and more. Among all that â€œâ€Ś and moreâ€? was a chainsaw-
wielding artist. Joe Stebbing let his creative side really rip during several demonstrations throughout the week. The Thurmont, Maryland, man fired up power tools to turn logs into art. “I have been doing this for 13 years and I enjoy the process of it,� Stebbing said. He attends about 100 fairs and events a year. Jennifer House of Chadwick, who brought her family to the fair all week, said she enjoyed watching Stebbing’s demonstration. “They’re really cool and he is very talented,� she said. The pleasure horse show drew a good crowd
Saturday. Zoe Fredericks, 12, of Mount Carroll said she’s been showing her horse, Tomahawk, for 3 years. “He’s a people horse; he likes everyone,� she said.
Fredericks earned fourth place in the costume class. As the day wound down, the engines cranked up Saturday and the fair went out with a bang – and lots of them – when the demolition

Obituaries Linda L. Gronewold
LANARK – Linda Lou Gronewold, 71, of Lanark, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 11, 1946, in Freeport, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Bennehoff) Miller. Linda graduated in 1964 from Lanark High School. On Feb. 27, 1981, she married Ronnie Gronewold. Linda was an accountant and insurance agent for Flickinger Insurance, and later Gronewold Insurance Agency, for more than 50 years. Linda worked for Rock Creek-Lima Township for more than 15 years. Linda enjoyed flower gardening and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Linda is survived by her two children, Angie (Judd) Miller and Andrew (Ashley) Gronewold; eight grandchildren, Annika, Konner, Trey, and Austin Wilson, Kodi Miller, and Weston, Colton, and Diem Gronewold; two stepdaughters, Patty (Jim) Rabideau and Cathy (Dale) Mansfield; seven stepgranddaughters; brothers, Wayne (Jo) Miller and Darrold Miller; sister, Judith (Fred) Thompson; special friend, Dan Sweitzer; and her best friend, puppy dog Teeka. Linda was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Gronewold; parents, Ernest and Alma Miller; and sisters, Nola Lomax, Janice Stees, Merdie Rugland, and
Barbie Miller. At Linda’s request, cremation rites have been accorded, and there will be no funeral. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. SAVANNA – Hoping to reduce potential crime hot spots, the Savanna City Council will move ahead with a residential rental inspection ordinance protocol ordinance, after hearing a presentation by City Attorney Phil Jensen at the Aug. 8 meeting. In a memorandum to the mayor and council, Jensen said pursuing an ordinance was within the city’s legal rights and powers to “prevent and abate nuisances.” He said keeping residential rental properties in good condition could be

MOUNT CARROLL – Workers on the new Galena Street Bridge will have a little more light. Mount Carroll Assistant City Clerk Cindy Wiersema said the City Council voted Aug. 8 to approve a new electrical pole and service at the bridge construction site. The service is at a cost of $600 to Jo-Carroll Energy. The bridge is more than a century old, and remains unsafe for any vehicle heavier than 5 tons to cross it. The new bridge, bid at about $2.1 million in late April. is slated for completion by December or January, while the current bridge will remain open for walkers and bicyclists. The council’s next regular meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at City Hall, 302 N. Main St.

MORRISON – City officials are scheduling a second public input meeting as they consider taking on an estimated $1.9 million infrastructure project in the downtown business district. The biggest part of the project would be a road rebuild of a 5-block area of Main Street that would
extend from Orange to Clinton streets. Part of the discussion, however, is what other fixes would be made when the road is torn up. A larger water main is needed in the area, and new sidewalks are needed that meet current standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Several options for the scope of the project are on the table, including not doing it at all. Those

scenarios have been discussed by the council and at the first public input meeting held July 6. “One of the biggest concerns was how much should be addressed,” City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen said. “Doubling the size of the water line would have added about $360,000 to the cost estimates.” There is a clear need for upgrading from a 4-inch
to an 8-inch water main system, Dykhuizen said. “Some of the downtown business owners get water in their basements when it rains, and this would take care of the problem.” Money also could be saved by doing overlay work on the road instead of a complete reconstruction. The type of road work done also drives the sidewalk conversation. While the sidewalks in the area aren’t

STERLING – The 15-year-old girlfriend of a teen accused of shooting her mom in the head is charged with arson and concealing a homicidal death. Anna Schroeder, 15, who lived with her mom, Peggy S. Schroeder, 53, at 805 W. Park St. in Morrison, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, concealment of homicidal death, and arson. If convicted of murder as a minor, she could serve time until she is 21.
Investigators say Schroeder shot her mom the afternoon of July 6, then she and Rachel Helm spent a day cleaning up before setting the house on fire July 8 to conceal the crime. Prosecutors say Helm, of Rock Falls, actually set the fire. She made an initial appearance Aug. 8 in Whiteside County Court in Sterling, the first time her formal charges were read. Anna appeared at a pretrial conference shortly before; her initial appearance was July 11. Arson is punishable by 3 to 7 years; concealment of homicidal death carries 2 to 5 years. Whether either teen will be charged as an adult is yet to be determined. The girls are being held at Mary Davis Detention Home in Galesburg. Judge Trish Joyce granted Whiteside County State’s Attorney Terry Costello’s motion to have staff there
keep the two girls separated at all times. Anna is represented by Sterling attorney Jim Mertes, who told Joyce he is unable to conduct a productive pretrial conference because he has yet to receive evidence and other information, called discovery, from Costello. Costello received reports from the Illinois State Police last week, the state’s attorney said. Helm is represented by Sterling attorney Michael Lancaster. Both girls have hearings Aug. 29. According to testimony July 11 from sheriff’s Detective David Molina, who interviewed both girls: Anna was waiting at home with her mom’s .38 revolver when Peggy, who worked at the Wahl Clipper Service Center, 3001 N. Locust St. in Sterling, came home around 5:30 p.m. Anna met her in the living room, told
her to put a towel over her face and shot her in the forehead. She texted Rachel about what she did, then sent her a picture of her mom’s body when Rachel didn’t believe her. Rachel’s mother gave her a ride to the Schroeders’ home that night, and the girls tried to clean the blood out of the carpet before going to sleep in Anna’s room. The next day, they moved Peggy’s body to her bedroom, laid her on the floor and covered her with a bed sheet, and kept working on the carpet. They also walked to Subway, where they spent an hour eating and where Anna learned that her father, Daryl Schroeder of Walnut, was coming to Morrison. She vomited in Subway’s bathroom. The girls then walked to a nearby store to buy more cleaning supplies. They decided to run away, and that night they dyed their
hair. The next morning, Rachel set fire to the bed sheet covering Peggy and to sheets in Anna’s room, then they walked to Grove Hill Cemetery and hid Anna’s phone and the gun, which later were recovered. Anna went to her father’s home, although it’s not clear from testimony how she got there, and Rachel went back to her family in Rock Falls. Around 1:30 p.m., Peggy’s neighbors reported smelling burning plastic. An off-duty Erie firefighter who was in the area broke down the door as Daryl Schroeder was driving up to the home. He called 911. That day, Rachel confessed to her mother, who drove her to the Sheriff’s Department around 8 p.m. Rachel told Molina what happened and where Anna, who she said might
be suicidal, could be found. At 8:37 p.m., Anna posted a message to her mom on Peggy’s Facebook page: “I don’t even know if you can see me right now but if you can I just want you to know you were my best friend. There were so many things I wanted to say and do with you. I wasn’t always the best daughter and I’m so sorry. I love you so much mom I just want you to know and I’ll never forget you.” The message was followed by two heart icons. Anna was picked up at her dad’s house and taken to the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department for questioning. She broke down, asked for her father and confessed everything – including having researched children who murdered their parents, Molina testified.

About 50 people showed up for the first public input session, Dykhuizen said. A second meeting is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 24, but another one will definitely be held. Letters were sent to area business owners after the first meeting, in case they couldn’t attend. The city wants to hear more opinions on the scope of the Main Street project, but officials also want residents to help them evaluate the bigger budgetary picture. Doing one large project means several others will be moved to the back burner. “The sewer project is winding down, and when it’s finished, we want to
see how Main Street fits into our plans, but we want to do it methodically,” Dykhuizen said. “There are never-ending needs, especially with infrastructure, and a finite amount of resources.” The city is also taking into consideration the inconvenience to merchants and motorists that would be caused by tearing up such a busy area. Input at the first meeting was heavily in favor of doing the project, he said. After voters agreed to double the city’s sale tax 3 years ago, about $215,000 a year is available for infrastructure projects. While sales tax revenue would be used to pay for the road work on Main Street, utility ratepayers could pick up the cost of the water main upgrades.

oday is the big day! School is starting in the county, or I guess it is supposed to start today as long as nothing was affected by the state budget. I don’t need to ask where summer went, as it all flew by in the blink of an eye. The weather is certainly feeling like fall. This year, back-to-school spending is expected to reach $83.6 billion nationally! That is a lot of pencils and notebooks. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, that is an increase of more than 10 percent from last year. The increase is due to consumer confidence and people feeling they are able to spend a little more freely. Now that students carry laptop computers, I feel I spend far less on school supplies. A few pencils, pens, folders and notebooks, and away we go! However, many shoppers are spending on new clothes, electronics, and more! In fact $10.2 billion is spent on clothes alone! Shopping for the start of the school year is just the tip, as we know once school starts there are volleyball shirts, football pullovers, and basketball shoes, ... the list goes on and on! But, regardless, all I can say is, YEAH! School is back in session. The Young Leaders need to give a shout out to those who donated as sponsors for the Ag Olympics at the Carroll County Fair. Those who assisted with sponsorship were Clark Carroll Insurance, 1st Class Insurance, Carroll Service

MILLEDGEVILLE – A districtwide survey has helped the ChadwickMilledgeville School District narrow its options for renovating and expanding Milledgeville High School. About 100 people attended a meeting Monday at which Superintendent Tim Schurman unveiled the results of a survey conducted in July to gather residents’ thoughts about the original $11 million plan and three other options. Formed in the wake of declining enrollment, the first – and most popular – option calls for closing Chadwick Junior High School, adding a gym and office space, upgrading the heating and air conditioning systems, and consolidating
all pre-K-12 classes at the high school, which now also houses pre-K through thirdgrade students. It also requires getting land to the north and west of the school from the Milledgeville Park District. Schurman will report on what he called “very cordial” negotiations with the park board at the next board meeting. The other three options put forth in the survey were: •Ditching the gym and doing critical building upgrades only, which would cost about $8 million. Chadwick would be closed, but its gym would remain open for junior high sports, and again, there would be no tax hike. Thirty percent approved of this option. • Performing heating, cooling and other renovations, but reducing the size of the proposed gym from 900 to 300 or

400 seats, which would cost about $9.5 million, and come with no tax hike. The current gym has 750 seats. Chadwick still would be closed. This garnered the support of 26 percent of the respondents. • Closing Chadwick and cutting junior high sports programs, also at no tax rate increase, proved so unpopular that it has been
dropped. The district can get about $4 million in federal zerointerest bonds to apply toward renovations, no matter the option chosen. Closing the junior high will result in yearly savings that would be put toward paying off the alternative revenue bonds needed to pay for the rest of the project, which is why there
is no tax increase for two of the three options. The most popular, and most expensive option, however – favored by 44 percent of the survey’s 614 respondents – would cost the owner of a $50,000 home about $15 more a year to help pay them back. The board could vote on a final option as soon as its Aug. 21 meeting. It has
until Dec. 31 to get the zerointerest bonds, and must allow for a 30-day period for people to weigh in. Those attending Monday spoke for and against closing Chadwick. Angela Sheddan, who lives near Chadwick, asked how the proposals would enhance academics. SURVEY continued on A194

• When a school bus is traveling on a two-lane roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, the vehicles in all lanes of traffic must stop. Vehicles should stop at least 20 feet before reaching the school bus to allow pupils to cross the roadway safely. • When a school bus is traveling on a four-lane roadway with at least two lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop. Pupils shall not be required to cross four or more lanes of traffic to reach their residence. • When a school bus is traveling on a one-way roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, all lanes of traffic must stop, regardless of the number of lanes of traffic. • CAUTION: The majority of children injured or killed in pupil transportation are not injured or killed on the school bus, but outside the bus. Most of them are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the bus is often referred to as the “DEATH ZONE.” • State law requires all school buses to stop at railroad crossings, whether or not there are pupils on board. The school bus driver will pull to the right-hand lane and display the hazard warning lights, stop the bus within 15 and 50 feet of the first rail of the rail grade crossing, open the driver window and service door, look and listen for an approaching train, and then proceed across the tracks without changing gears. Other vehicles should not try to cross the tracks behind the school bus until the bus has cleared the tracks and there is room for the vehicle behind the bus on the other side. Some rail crossings have limited space between rail crossings and stop signs or signals on the other side of the tracks. If the school bus must make a stop after crossing the tracks, a vehicle following the bus may be trapped on the tracks until the bus moves or the stop signal light changes. This would have tragic results should a train approach the crossing and vehicles are unable to go forward or backward to clear the tracks.
• Supervise children to make sure they get to the stop on time, wait far away from the road and avoid rough play. • Teach your child to ask the driver for help if he/she drops something near the bus. If a child stoops to pick something up, the driver cannot see him/her, and the child could be struck by thebus. A book bag or backpack helps keep loose items together. • Make sure clothing has no loose drawstrings and backpack straps are short so that they don’t get caught in the handrail or school bus door. • Encourage safe school bus loading and unloading • If you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing the location. TEACH YOUR CHILD TO GET ON AND OFF THE SCHOOL BUS SAFELY • When loading, stay away from the danger zone and wait for the driver’s signal. Board the bus in single file. • When unloading, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road). Move away from the bus. • Before crossing the street, take five “giant steps” out from the front of the bus (Illinois has the school bus crossing arm) until you see the driver’s face. The driver will signal you when it is safe to cross the roadway. • Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped. Continue to watch for traffic when crossing.

LANARK – Lowell and Arlene Dietz’s love can be described as defying the odds. The couple celebrated Arlene’s 93rd birthday on Aug. 8 at their rural Lanark home, with several of their children and visitors from Hospice Care of America. The organization helped Arlene in 2016 when she was at the brink of death, but she came back. It’s not the only way the Dietzes have bucked the usual way of doing things. They have six daughters and six sons, and their 75th wedding anniversary will be Sept. 6. “The family joke is that Mom prayed for six and God thought she wanted six of each,” said Nancy Shellhouse, one of the
Dietzes’ daughters. Lowell, now 96, also goes by “Bud.” He met Arlene Von Holten in high school in Walnut. Nancy said her parents met when Arlene snapped Bud’s suspenders while he was umpiring a neighborhood baseball game. “He had a date, and the other girl dumped him, so Mom and Dad went out,” Nancy said. The Dietzes farmed near Walnut, then moved in 1960 to Lanark. They moved once more when the Lake Carroll community was founded, settling at their current address. Dr. Mark Werkle with Hospice surprised the Dietzes by bringing his 1926 Model T Ford out to their farm. The couple sat in the back seat, before the party moved indoors for a cake for Arlene.

As your child becomes curious about alcohol, he or she may turn to you for answers and advice. Use this opportunity to start an open, honest conversation about drinking. Because some questions can be difficult to answer, it is important to be prepared. The following are some common questions and answers about underage drinking.
“I got invited to a party. Can I go?”
Ask your child if an adult will be present at the party or if he or she thinks children will be drinking. Remind your child that even being at a party where there is underage drinking can get him or her into trouble. Use this time to establish or reinforce your rules about alcohol and outline the behavior you expect.
“Did you drink when you were a kid?”
Don’t let your past stop you from talking to your child about underage drinking. If you drank as a teenager, be honest. Acknowledge that it was risky. Make sure to emphasize that we now know even more about the risks to children who drink underage. You could even give your child an example of a painful moment that occurred because of your underage drinking.
“Why do you drink?”
Make a distinction between alcohol use among children and among adults. Explain to your child your reasons for drinking: whether it is to enhance a meal, share good times with friends, or celebrate a special occasion. Point out that if you choose to drink, it is always in moderation. Tell your child that some people should not drink at all, including underage children.
“What if my friends ask me to drink?”
Helping your child say “no” to peer pressure is one of the most important things you can do to keep him or her alcohol-free. Work with your child to think of a way to handle this situation, whether it is simply saying, “No, I don’t drink,” or saying, “I promised my mom (or dad) that I wouldn’t drink.”
“You drink alcohol, so why can’t I?”
Remind your child that underage drinking is against the law, and for good reason. Point out that adults are fully developed mentally and physically so they can handle drinking. Children’s minds and bodies, however, are still growing, so alcohol can have a greater effect on their judgment and health.
“Why is alcohol bad for me?”
Don’t try to scare your child about drinking or tell him or her, “You can’t handle it.” Instead, tell your child that alcohol can be bad for his or her growing brain, interferes with judgment, and can make him or her sick. MORRISON – Morrison head football coach Cory Bielema is looking for his 2017 team to be the opposite of the weather on Thursday night. After a near-perfect morning and middle of the day, torrential downpours around 5 p.m. forced the Mustangs inside. Inconsistency made Morrison change course, just as the program’s own struggles on the field have led to several down years. “[Inconsistency] has hurt us in the past couple years. We haven’t had the record we’ve wanted,” Bielema said. “But we haven’t been a poor team. We’ve played very well at stretches, and absolutely awful in stretches. We’ve lost games I personally think we should’ve won, and pulled out wins in games I thought we didn’t have much of a chance.” The Mustangs’ last playoff appearance came back in 2012. Since then, their 9-27 record hasn’t allowed them to get back to a proud tradition of postseason excellence, highlighted by a 45-6 mark between 2008-11 and 2A state titles in 2009 and 2011. “I was a little kid who got to follow those teams around because my dad

Morrison Fillies The Fillies are coached this season by Julia Deter and assistant Kerrie Tenboer. Morrison finished the 2016 season with a 5-20 record. Key returning players include: senior Libero Madison Steines, setter Ally Noble, setter MacKenzie Petkus, and outside hitter Emily Szabo. Key newcomers are: middle hitter Keylee Shetler, and outside hitter Grace Steines. “Our greatest strength and weakness will be the same idea, and that is we are starting fairly fresh as far as positions are concerned,” Deter said. “After losing a group of six starting seniors from last year’s roster, I am looking for new individuals to step up and fill these spots. With a new lineup in place, anything is possible, which could be a positive or negative and as a team we are choosing to take a fresh start and look at everything in a positive manner.” Other area teams to beat? “The Three Rivers Conference is always a tough conference for volleyball. I am anticipating the top teams on the West Side of the conference to be Fulton, Orion, and Riverdale.”

“Our enrollment is at a point where it is what it is,” Bielema said. “I think we still have some athletes walking the halls, and their friends are trying to get them out here. We’re used to it at this point. “The ones that are out here are doing a really nice job. We have some talent. It’s just going to be about keeping them healthy. They’ve been hard workers. It was a really good offseason in the weight room and conditioning.” A positive sign in the offseason came with ample bodies able to compete in 7-on-7 tournaments. With

Hospice Care also honored Bud for serving 2 years in the Army during World War II. He was part of the Timber Wolves division, helping with cleanup operations against the German resistance, and received five awards. Bud shared some background on his military career. While on the way to France, the boat he was aboard was followed by German submarines, and the crew tossed depth charges over the sides, blowing up at least one sub. “We went to France, then Belgium. We ended up at the Elba River, Americans on one side, Germans on the other,” Bud said. Air Force Ret. Staff Sgt. John Schafman, a hospice volunteer who served from 1966 to 1970, presented
a full roster in the summer, Morrison has been able to open up the playbook sooner; the team has already installed more plays on offense this season than all of 2016, and a few wrinkles to confuse defenses. Once the Mustangs suit up in full pads Saturday, the coaches will decide what stays offensively and what they scrap. Hitting each other in full-contact drills instead of blocking against bags will give the staff and players a good indication of what the regular season playbook will contain. “We learned the plays a lot faster there,” Slater said. “It’s already Day 4 [of camp], and we’re running stuff we didn’t run until Week 6 last year. It’s pretty great.” Bud with a certificate and pin. “Hospice Care of America wants to honor you for you service to our country. It’s my honor to be doing this. We appreciate your service, and your wife’s sacrifice,” Schafman said. Family and friends recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the national anthem before the pinning ceremony. Nancy recalled her childhood as full of music, with her mother playing the accordion, piano, and mouth organ. “Dad was passionate for sports, and Mom was passionate for music,” she said. Arlene said the visit was just overwhelming. “I’ve never had anything like this before,” she said. Bud said he was surprised. “I hope it won’t go to my head,” he added.
“We’ve also been able to put in new formations this year that will hopefully mess with people,” Dolan added. The 2017 team has already accomplished one thing those state title teams never did: On the first day of practice, Bielema has made it customary for every player to run a 300-yard shuttle under a designated time. This year, every player finished the run under their time limit; typically, Bielema has to plan for a couple days for every player to complete the shuttle under their assigned time. An early pleasant surprise is exactly the type of consistency across the roster Morrison will need to get back to their days of playing in Week 10.
