STERLING – Auto repair, criminal justice, digital media arts – take your pick. Eastland Junior High School eighth-grade students received information on a variety of career training paths Thursday during the 2017 Career Quest tours at Whiteside Area Career Center. A pool of 44 students was divided into six groups that stopped at various classrooms in the center to hear about available programs. Jerry Winger, student services coordinator at WACC, said the number of schools participating in the tours, which were held May 3-5, has grown from 15 to 23 during the past 7 years, allowing the center to reach out to more and more prospective students. More than 1,100 eighth-graders attended this year’s event. “They are getting exposure to all of our careers and much-needed skills they are going to use for the rest of their lives,” Winger said. The tour guides were center students who volunteered out of a pool of about 630 high schoolers from throughout the area, most of whom were in the eighth-graders’ shoes just a few years ago. “They’re proud of what they’re doing, and they’re sharing that pride with others,” Winger said. “It takes the whole building to put this together, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their efforts.” Emily Dawson, a

Milledgeville High School senior studying criminal justice at the center, on Wednesday led one of the 14 groups of students from David L. Rahn Junor High School in Mount Morris. It’s beneficial to gauge the students’ interests early on, to help them find what career direction is best, Dawson said. “It’s not just about how great these programs can be for their future; it’s about all the people they’ll meet, too,” she said. “It’s important to let them know how important it is to be around other people in a different element.” Dawson plans to major in biology at Sauk Valley Community College and eventually transfer to a 4-year university. At the criminal justice presentation, WACC students talked with the eighth-graders about fingerprinting, police equipment, crime scene investigations and more. Some of the students donned drunk driving goggles, which distort vision to simulate intoxication, and attempted to walk a line taped on the floor – to varying degrees of success. LANARK – Everyone old is new again. The Lanark City Council swore in new members at its May 2 meeting, with former Ward 3 Alderman Ken Viglietta sworn as mayor. Viglietta replaced Mayor John Huggins, who will be moving out of the city and did not seek re-election. The council voted 4-1 to approve former Ward 3 Alderman Mark Macomber to fill Viglietta’s seat. Macomber, a 16-year alderman, did not run again on April 4. Alderman Lara Tallman voted against the

Next meeting The Lanark City Council’s next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. May 16 at City Hall, 111-A S. Broad St. appointment. The council also approved an offer of $3,500 to purchase the lanarkil.com domain name from Huggins, who had maintained the site for the past 12 years. The agreement also includes Huggins doing up to 2 hours of design changes or updates, and up to 2 hours of training for an official or employee to make minor updates. In addition, Huggins

offered to continue to do updates and changes for $22.50 per hour. “I have some clients in Rockford whom I charge $36 per hour. I want to give back with the $22.50 per hour (fee),” Huggins said. Steve Kruzek also approached the board about future website updates and corrections. “Because Lanark is my town, I would charge a flat fee, which is $100, a little less than $10 per hour. I love doing it, and I love the town,” Kruzek said. Viglietta referred the question to the city’s public relations committee, for a report back at the council’s May 16 meeting.

CLINTON, Iowa – A team of 8 people will begin a run from Clinton, Iowa to Chicago on May 17, planning 4 days of raising awareness of mental health illness and suicide prevention. The first-day’s route will cross the bridge into Fulton, continue to Morrison and end in Dixon. Members of the public are welcome to join the run. The Defeat the Stigma Project has made previous runs in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The project was created in 2013

Chadwick-Milledgeville school board members heard an update May 1 from OpTerra Energy Services representatives about the proposed work. The project would include replacing the school’s HVAC system and selected windows, remodeling and repurposing existing classroom

The next meeting of the Chadwick-Milledgeville School Board will be at 7 p.m. May 15 at Milledgeville High School, 100 E. Eighth St. space, and asbestos abatement. The possible addition would include a gymnasium and office space. First Midstate Investment Bankers Senior Vice President David Pistorius spoke to the board about bond financing options for the project. The overall cost is estimated at $10.5 million. Superintendent Tim Schurman said he thought the board was hesitant to invest that much money at this time. “It’s up to the board. I think they’ll

come to a conclusion this next board meeting (May 15).” Schurman said. The project has been discussed since July. “I think we’ve exhausted that,” Schurman said of whether the district might go back to the drawing board on the project. OpTerra representatives toured the school in April to assess possible costs and what work needed to be done. In action at the May 1 meeting, the board voted to: • Appoint Dave Wagenknecht to fill a vacancy on the board. • Elect Sandy Baylor-Schmidt as president, Brad Smith as vice president, and Pam Eubanks as secretary.

MORRISON – Morrison High School senior Emma Melton received a Gallon Grad award from the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center for donating blood at least 8 times (approximately 1 gallon) before graduating. Students are eligible to begin donating blood at age 16, with a signed parental permission form, provided by the Blood Center. Most begin donating at a blood drive hosted by their high school. “These students have done something really special,” said Sharee Hoegerl, donor

relations consultant for MVRBC. “As dedicated blood donors, they provide Emma Melton a resource that helps save lives at hospitals throughout our region.” Gallon Grad award recipients receive an award certificate and a Red Cord that signifies the connection between the blood donor, the Blood Center, and patients who have been helped by the student’s donations. With permission from their school, students

may choose to wear the Red Cord in their high school graduation ceremony. Key Club advisor Kris Bielema said of Melton, “She has been a Key Club member all 4 years. ... It is the MHS Key Club that hosts the annual student blood drives. We have hosted blood drives for 19 years; the Mississippi Valley Blood Center has been our provider since 2009. Emma has not only donated at those drives, she has also assisted at them. Last year, both Krysta Mapes and Ryan Tillman were Gallon Grads and Key

Clubbers.” MVRBC is the provider of blood and blood components to Genesis Health System, Morrison County Hospital, and UnityPoint Health-Quad Cities. Blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 1 hour. Donors must be at least 16, in good health, and weigh at least 110 pounds. An MVRBC Donor ID card or photo identification is required to donate; 16-year olds must present a signed parental permission form, available from the Blood Center or online at www.bloodcenter. org.

University of Illinois Extension recently organized a celebration of science program for Earth Day at Andresen Nature Center in Fulton. Attendees could take part in scientific experiments and explorations, such as why toast always lands jelly-side down, whether there are iron fillings in breakfast cereal, and more. A scale walking tour of the solar system was one of the displays. RIGHT: Extension naturalists and others spoke at the program. West Carroll High School science teacher Abby Bradbury discussed 3D printing of hands for children. Biologist Shay Bradbury talked about restoring the Plum River. Local kids mark Earth Day

have been saying we have something fun coming up. Something we haven’t tried before. Well. here is the scoop. The chance to take a farm tour and enjoy our local foods is coming to you this fall. The Carroll County Farm Bureau Young Leaders are sponsoring their first Farm to Fork, Carroll County’s Tasteful Agricultural Experience. The event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 27, beginning at 4 p.m. at Livengood Barn in Chadwick. A limited number of tickets will be sold for this local dining event. Cost is $30 a person or $50 a couple. The evening will kick off with a local beef farm tour in which guests will be transported to the farm. Following the tour, the Young Leaders have a local chef, Scott Heeren with Custom Catering and BBQ, lined up to prepare local grown and raised ingredients into mouthwatering dishes. Each course of the meal will also be paired with local brews or wines. During dinner, we will be having local producers speak on their farm. Currently participating in the program

are Hunter Haven Farms, Lamoreux Farms, Livengood Family Beef, Lower Farms and Neumiller Farms, along with Generations Brewery.
