Students look to touch, change the world Region’s young Servant Leaders help program celebrate 20th year BY TONY CARTON For Prairie Advocate
FREEPORT – Hundreds of area students gathered Saturday in the Highland Community College Student Conference Center for their regular monthly Servant Leadership training session, but their March meeting brought something more to the table – it also was a celebration of the program’s 20th anniversary. “In 20 years, our servant leaders have clocked more than a million hours of community service in our 4-county region,” Highland Community College Servant Leadership Coordinator Kim Pool said. “They’ve completed thousands upon thousands of service projects and helped countless community agencies through volunteerism.” The Highland Community College Servant Leadership program draws its membership from 17 area high schools, 13 of which are active in the program. “We ask each participating chapter to accomplish one community service project annually, but many of our schools do more,” said Pool, who is retiring from the position in the spring. “It looks like the next journey for my husband and I is a move to Kansas City, and we are looking at the possibility of overseas missions,” Pool said. “I’m excited for the next 20 years of Servant Leadership activities. A change in leadership can be an exciting time, so I look forward to the next director coming in with expanded vision and expanded enthusiasm for our young people. “I think Servant Leadership will remain a strong program in our communities and at Highland, and I’m looking forward to coming back as an alumnus of the program.” West Carroll High School has nine students participating in this year’s
program. Their mentor, Mariah Pratt, said they have undertaken a pet shelter drive with the goal of helping the Safe Haven facility in Elizabeth as their chapter project. West Carroll senior Jenna McGinnis said the group visited area businesses collecting donations for supplies needed at Safe Haven. “With those donations we purchased items like dog and cat food, cat litter, blankets, cleaning products and much more,” McGinnis said. “We were able to collect more than $400 for those supplies, and kids at our school brought items, too.” McGinnis said she will attend Highland College next fall, and intends to continue her work with Servant Leadership. “I’ve seen the good accomplished through the annual Hearts and Hands for Hunger project at Highland, and will return to work with that,” McGinnis said. “There were a lot of people involved with Hearts and Hands last year, and it’s an exciting project.” Hearts and Hands for Hunger is entering its 8th year and has collected, packaged and delivered nearly a half million meals to children around the world. Eastland High School Senior Anna Kuper said Hearts and Hands for Hunger is always a major undertaking. “We stage a series of

“We have to create as many opportunities as possible, so she is able to see the outside world without actually going out,” Kuper said. The Eastland group discussed its project at length before beginning construction. “We’ve included an entire glass wall or window, and a flower garden outside it, so she can see the beauty of nature without going outside,” Kuper said. “We’ve designed a ventilation room or air lock on the side of the house so the girls’ parents and friends can visit. And inside we’ve put a lounge area with multiple screens, so she can see the world and communicate without having
attended this program over the years,” Stewart said. “And more importantly, to their contributions to the communities they’ve come from. That’s what it’s all about. “Seeing young people
to leave.” She noted the importance of community service, saying the act of working together makes the world a better place. “Just a simple act like picking up garbage or reaching others through events hosted at our school sends a message that if we all contribute, we all move forward,” Kuper said. State Rep. Mitchell Clodfelter of the Genesee Hillbillies 4-H Club in Sterling was named the March 4-H’er of the Month in Whiteside County.

The University of Illinois Extension, Whiteside County 4-H Program named Mitchell Clodfelter its March 4-H’er of the Month. Clodfelter is a 9-year 4-H’er and is a member of the Genesee Hillbillies 4-H Club in Sterling. He regularly attends monthly club meetings, and is president of his 4-H Club this year. Clodfelter also is vice president of the Federation this year, and has been a camp counselor for the past couple years. In a news release, the Extension wrote: Mitch is a reliable and hard working 4-H’er who is a great role model to many younger 4-H members.
Mitch has shown in many different project areas, but this year he is showing beef, woodworking and welding. Something that stands out with Mitch is his helping hand when it comes to the younger members, especially in the livestock areas. He is always willing to help them learn and even lets others help show his steers. The most important thing about Mitch is that he is friendly, encouraging and very welcoming to everyone in 4-H. He includes everyone and has great input and ideas for all county meetings he attends. He is a great asset to the 4-H program and we are proud to name him 4-H’er of the Month for March!

ERIE – Some legislators have been shying away from their constituents lately, but some aren’t. Newly elected state Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, met with area residents and talked about her legislative experiences so far during Rep. Tony McCombie an “office hours” session March 6 at the Erie fire station. The midday visit is part of a series of office hours planned this month and next throughout the 71st District. “Everybody’s really been wonderful in Springfield,” McCombie said when asked about her reception. She was elected in November, defeating incumbent Democrat Mike Smiddy, and was sworn in Jan. 11. She’s received bipartisan welcomes from other

meeting with McCombie. “Today was really to introduce myself.” Paul Huizenga of Erie met with McCombie to pass along his granddaughter-inlaw Sarah Moore’s support for the Home Birth Safety Act, which would provide a license for certified professional midwives. “Sarah is a midwife,” Huizenga said. After meeting with McCombie, he said, “She’s definitely what we need.” Some of the legislation McCombie has sponsored includes a call to continue distributing money from several state funds to local governments even in the absence of a state fiscal appropriation, and increasing the income threshold for freezing senior citizens’ property taxes, from $55,000 to $60,000.

t figures. This week I got some numbers I could have included in last week’s column on ag in Carroll County. In 2016, Carroll County ranked 5th in the nation for corn yield and 6th for soybean yield. This is according to USDA-NASS. That is pretty cool when you think about it. So, let’s take a poll. As you read this, I should be headed to or at my first high school baseball game of the season. ... So, did Mother Nature cooperate or not!? Let’s hope so, as I am ready for spring and very excited to see what our Eastland Cougars baseball team can accomplish this year. This Thursday, our office will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. I am manning the office this week, as Jessica is enjoying a vacation. Not often does it happen that I am on my own, but she deserves it. So if this week you had issues contacting our office, I hope you left a message, as there are times it can be crazy. I also was left the job of delivering nearly all the backpack program bags this week. No one knows how much I appreciate all Jessica does!
I believe we have a tractor drive route! This year it will be held on Friday, July 21. We will be leaving from Thomson, heading to Mount Carroll, over to Savanna, and then back to Thomson. The route will be about 40 miles, so we will have a little of travel after we have lunch. Registration information will soon be available. If you are interested in learning more about either of the trips we are sponsoring with Tri-State Travel, we are having a trip preview meeting at our office at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 29. We will have info on the Branson, Missouri, trip coming up in November, and we will be sponsoring a trip to San Antonio in March 2018. “Meetings had been postponed, and we have been wondering when they were going to tell us something,” Morrison Mayor Everett Pannier said. “Then they announced there would be no four-lane expansion from Fulton to Rock Falls around Morrison.” IDOT cited several reasons for not doing the project in Morrison, but Pannier said emphasis was put on studies that showed declining traffic count numbers along that stretch of the highway. “They said the traffic counts since 2011 between Rock Falls and Fulton have been down to the point where they can’t rationalize spending nearly $500 million for an expansion in the area,” Pannier said. A lack of public support was cited as another reason for the decision. While leaders in other corridor towns such as Fulton, Rock Falls, and Clinton, Iowa, have been solidly behind the four-lane expansion, Morrison’s level of support has been mixed at best. At its last public meeting, 67 percent of those in attendance voted for the no build option. There wasn’t enough room to do the expansion through town, and there was concern that Morrison would be isolated by the bypass. “We have about 18 businesses around the
corridor that will be happy about this decision,” Pannier said. “Now that the uncertainty is gone, we will reach out to the Route 30 businesses, and do whatever we can to help them.” Pannier said the decision removes a huge barrier to planning for the city’s future. The U.S. Route 30 corridor feasibility study began in spring 2002, and results of that study determined that the project was necessary to meet projected growth and transportation demands in northwestern Illinois. The project suffered a major setback in 2013, when the Federal Emergency Management Agency drew up new floodplain maps in Morrison and along the Rock River at the state Route 2 corridor. The new maps expanded the floodplain areas, affecting the planned road routes. The project was basically back at square one, requiring new route determinations and public impact meetings. Morrison is still focused on U.S. 30, but the objectives are now clear. “We’re not saying that the four-lane expansion won’t ever happen here, but now we must work with IDOT on improving Route 30 through town because it’s not in good shape,” Pannier said. Whiteside County Economic Development Director Gary Camarano said the decision is disappointing news for the future of economic development in the county and region.
“Along the east-west corridor between Chicago and Iowa, the Iowa side is complete, and most of it in Illinois is completed except a small portion in Whiteside County,” Camarano said. Camarano said he would have liked the process to have been more representative of all of the communities involved. “I understand Morrison’s situation, but we need to look at the big picture,” Camarano said. “The town hall is not a scientific poll by any means – it’s a single event where the results depend largely on who organizes it.” Camarano also questioned the validity of the traffic projections in determining a need for the expansion. “If you don’t improve the road, it becomes a selffulfilling prophecy and people aren’t going to use it as often,” Camarano said. Camarano hasn’t been in Whiteside County throughout most of the U.S. 30 process, but he said he plans to gauge support for continuing the fight. “Part of this could be political dysfunction at the state level, but with the renewed emphasis on infrastructure in Washington, maybe we just need to present a better case,” Camarano said. The proposed project area, 24 miles long and 10 miles wide, had extended from state Route 136 east of Fulton, bypassing Morrison, and continuing to state Route 40 in Rock Falls.

Pearl City Wolves Head coach Darrell Pauley and assistants Dylan Stichter, Tim Pauley, Ryne Plager, John Schroeder and Blake Voss lead the Wolves this season. Last year’s squad finished with a 6-18, 4-10 record. “We have seven players that appeared in at least 15 games last year,” Pauley said, “all underclassmen. We have two seniors, four juniors, 11 sophomores, and five freshmen on this year’s team. As a team, good fundamental baseball will be the key to our success.” Greatest strength? Athleticism. Weakness? Youth. In closing, Pauley said, “The conference should be very competitive.” Sterling Golden Warriors Head coach Nick Pepper and his assistants Ben Anderson, Gary Stewart, Bob Stone and Jarred King lead Sterling this season after the Golden Warriors finished the 2016 season with a record of 17-18, 5-7. West Carroll Lady Thunder Head coach Don Mathey is back for his 11th season at the helm for West Carroll. His 2016 squad finished the season with a 12-15 overall record and 8-6 in the NUIC West, which was good enough for fourth place. Last year’S team lost 7-6 to the host team in a semifinal of the Oregon Regional. Returning starters include: junior catcher/infielder/outfielder Emma Aljets, junior pitcher/ outfielder Riley Sullivan, senior infielder/catcher Josi Anderson, senior infielder Shelby Skiles, senior infielder/pitcher Emily Suiter, and sophomore infielder/ outfielder McKenna Sullivan. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS Continued . . . Team weaknesses? “Learning how to win, our roles, and playing as a team,” Mathey said. “This group of players has not experienced a lot of success through winning. Depth and experience are also major concerns this year. A few key injuries would be devastating to us. We have the very low numbers again this year, with only 22 players reporting in grades 9 through 12. We generally average 32 to 36 players total. Although we only graduated three seniors off the 2016 team, all three played major roles for us, and two of the three were first team all-conference. Who will step up to fill those roles? Riley Sullivan pitched the majority of games for us last year, but is coming off rotator cuff surgery. How will she come back? Who will be that second varsity pitcher? We only have four players who play ASA or travel softball, which is a weakness. We have some questions that will be answered as we start our season.” Who are the top teams in the NUIC and around the area? “In the NUIC West, all the conference teams will be tough for us. No one can be overlooked. Pearl City has been and is the top team until someone can knock them off. Le-Win should be good. Eastland is much improved, as they were young last year and gained experience.” When asked his final thoughts on the upcoming season, Mathey finished with, “We have a very challenging schedule. The nonconference schedule is as tough as it gets. We play many of the top teams in our area and even the state for that matter. The first scheduled game is March 13th versus perennial power Orangeville. We will have to find pitcher(s) who can ‘hit spots,’ a defense that can make plays, and then worry about scoring runs to see how successful we can be. I think we might have to concentrate on improving each game, one at a time, and not worry about wins and losses. The wins and losses will come with improvement that we hopefully will make.” Pearl City Lady Wolves Head coach Mark Melville and assistant coaches Emily Dixon and Jamie Melville lead a Pearl City squad that finished the 2016 season with 28-4 overall record and 13-1 conference mark. That squad took its fifth consecutive NUIC West conference championship, a third consecutive regional championship,
and first sectional championship before losing to Princeville in the supersectional. Key returning players include senior pitcher/ infielder Kendra Melville, senior infielder Taylor Brudi, senior catcher/infielder Meg Tessendorf, senior infielder Macayla Pilson, and junior catcher/infielder Tyra Clark. Key newcomers are junior infielder/outfielder Kilynn Perdue, junior infielder/outfielder Kayla Niehaus, sophomore pitcher/ infielder Tia Clark, and many talented freshmen and sophomores. “Pitching, our infield and hitting will be our strengths,” Melville said. “We must develop an outfield with our younger players. They are great kids to coach.” Other area teams to watch? “All the teams from the NUIC are a challenge to play,” Melville said. “In the West, East Dubuque has all their team back. Also, Le-Win will be very good, as will Eastland and West Carroll. Morrison Fillies Head coach Tammy Deter takes the field for another season with her assistant coaches Mike Wiersema and Lynn Patten. The Fillies finished the 2016 season with a record of 23-8 overall and 11-3 in the conference. Key returning players are second baseman Emma Melton, shortstop Jaeden Workman, catcher Lauren Vos, third baseman/ outfielder Emma Sitzmore, third baseman/outfielder Madison Steines, pitcher/first baseman Brooke Stralow, outfielder Emily Szabo, pitcher/first baseman Lauren Rice, and outfielder Ellie Schmidt. Key newcomers include outfielders Kassidee Church, Ally Noble, and Makenzie Stoecker. Strengths? “We will have experience on the field, as seven of the girls are seniors,” Deter said. The leadership and experience they have will be huge as the season gets rolling as well as the postseason. Mady Ferris will move to center field and help secure up the outfield; she is also a 2015 and 2016 All-Stater. We have three sophomores who started at the varsity level last year and know what to expect. All three were allconference as freshmen and Craft was third team All-State.” Team weaknesses? “Every year we talk about bringing it all together, and every player has to know their role on the team. the Golden Warriors, as they fell to the Panthers in the semifinals of the Peoria Sectional. That, combined with Washington’s pressure defense which produced 17 Sterling turnovers, led to the loss. The Warriors made just 13 of 44 field goals attempts. Washington led 17-11 at the half, and extended its lead to 28-19 heading into the final quarter. The Panthers extended that lead to as many as 17 points (3619) with three and a half minutes to play, and both teams emptied their benches as time ran down. Sterling finishes its season with a record of 23-9, while Washington improved to 24-6. Dimitric Young led Sterling with 9 points. MARCH 6 Highland 89, Kennedy-King 86 (OT): The Cougars outlasted the Statesmen in overtime to win their first Region IV championship title in 3 years. Highland held the lead for most of the game until Kennedy-King managed to knot the score as regulation expired. Deang Deang led the Cougars with 27 points, as teammate D’Angelo Jackson added 24 points. The win advances the Cougars (26-6) to the District IV championship. A win in that game would give Highland its first NJCAA Division I National Tourney spot in 3 years also.

MARCH 6 Sauk Valley 79, Highland 70: The Skyhawks held off a late Highland charge to capture the Regional IV championship by 9 points. The contest was tied at 24-24 after one quarter. Sauk Valley (15-12) took the lead in the second quarter and held a 45-35 advantage at the half. The Cougars (14-16) would not go quietly, though, as time after time they battled back to close the gap, but Sauk managed to hold on. Dabriona Williams led the Skyhawks with 32 points, 24 of those in the first half. Highland was led by Dakota Toney’s 20 points.
