PEARL CITY – A Stephenson County farm family’s work in conservation and other practices has earned them national recognition. Chad and Deb Bremmer were picked as national winners of the 61st annual National Outstanding Young Farmers Awards Congress, held Feb. 9-12 in Greenville, South Carolina. The Bremmers are one of four national winners of the award, organized by John Deere Co., Outstanding Farmers of America, the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, and the Jaycees. Chad, 40, said he and his brother, Ross, are the fourth generation on the farm. The Bremmers operate a 750-head Holstein replacement heifer facility, which raises calves from weaning until 30 days before calving. The family also raises corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and winter wheat. “My brother and I have ownership through inheritance and purchase. We’ve run it since 2002,” Chad said. The Bremmers were named Stephenson County’s conservation farm family in 2009, and have implemented grid soil testing and a

They’re also building a new grain storage site, which will use natural gas in the drying process. “It’ll be built this summer. We have the site picked out, and we’re ready to start as soon as the weather allows,” Chad said. The Bremmers also invite legislators to tour the farm, with tours typically set in late July or early August. Chad serves on an ag advisory board for 89th District state Rep. Brian Stewart, and has been a state young leader

committee chairman for the Illinois Farm Bureau and a delegate to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Chad and Deb have three sons, Benjamin, Ethan, and Eli. Ross and Melanie have four children, Addison, Ava, Lucas, and Jayden. Chad said the savings bond which comes with the award, from John Deere,

SAVANNA – With cleanup of the Radke Hotel Building complete, it’s time for new owner Vicki Covarrubias and her family to start a massive facelift of the property. Covarrubias, an electrical contractor from St. Charles, took ownership of the building in January 2016, about 4 years after learning the Radke was for sale. She said she had been looking to purchase and renovate a building like the Radke, 422 Main St., for 10 years. A large portion fo the hotel was closed around 2010, though about a quarter of it was still functioning as late as 2015. “I want it to be a place where families can come together and gather,” Covarrubias said. “I want this to be very communitycentered.” She said she’d like to have

two banquet halls where people could have baby showers, wedding showers and wedding receptions. She’s also like the hotel to have its own restaurant. “The place needs to be gutted from the studs up,” Covarrubias said. But, seeing that she owns and operates Total Electric Controls and Maintenance, her son, Elliot is an electrician; and her husband works with her, the challenges of the Radke property “didn’t really scare me because I see it all the time.” She said her family has found the building had secrets. They included nine “hidden” rooms that were when found when there were missing feet on the blueprints she had done for the building. Hammers to walls revealed rooms within a room. Obituaries Ruth L. Witt LANARK – Ruth Lucille Witt, 96, of Lanark, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll, where she was a resident. She and her twin brother, Robert, were born March 15, 1920, in rural Lanark to Virgil and Esther (Plock) Traum. Ruth attended the Lanark schools through high school. She married LeRoy “Dick” Witt on Nov. 4, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. Ruth enjoyed many years as a cook in the Lanark School District, where her cinnamon rolls were a huge favorite of all the students. Along with being a wife, she was mother of three boys, sister to Raymond, inseparable twin sister to brother Robert, and a wonderful mother-in-law, aunt, and friend to many. Grandma, Great-Grandma, and GreatGreat-Grandma were her favorite titles. She taught

“We have no electric, no gas, no heat, we have nothing,” she said. Covarrubias doesn’t want services turned back on until replacement work is done; with the age of the structure, she doesn’t want to risk a safety hazard. She estimates the work will cost about $3 million. Covarrubias hopes to have two storefronts ready by the end of summer. “Then next summer, we should have a quarter of the hotel up and ready, and every year a few more rooms,” she said. There are about 220 rooms in the structure now, she

There are many fond memories of Euchre, marbles, Uno, and a host of other fun-filled games that today bring a smile to everyone’s face. On March 15, 2010, Brian and Sharon Witt escorted Ruth to surprise her twin brother, Robert, after several years, to celebrate their 90th birthday. Robert was a resident at a nursing home in Clinton, Iowa and was elated to be reunited again. When they were 9 years old, their mother Esther took them to Lindo Theater in Freeport for a twin gathering, where 42 pairs attended. As twins, they shared many wonderful memories in their 90 years of life. Ruth was a member of First Brethren Church of Lanark where, in her earlier years, she was active in the WMS, Women’s Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Grange and enjoyed many fun-filled years in the Red Hat Society. Surviving are sons Jerry (Pat) Witt of Stow, Ohio,

Ron (Linda) Witt of Chillicothe; daughter-inlaw, Sandy Witt of Lanark; seven grandchildren, Brian (Sharon) Witt of Lanark, Brad (Renea) Witt of Lanark, Jim (Leslie) Witt of Hudson, Ohio, Tim (Cheryl) Witt of Northville, Michigan, Christy (Jeff) Schofield of Hudson, Ohio, Stacey (Brandon) Tipsword of Champaign, Illinois, and Aaron (Jenn) Witt of Edelstein; 13 greatgrandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy “Dick” Witt; one son, Teddy Witt of Lanark; her mother and father, Esther and Virgil Traum of Lanark; and two brothers, Raymond Traum of Lanark, and her twin brother, Robert Traum of Camanche, Iowa. The funeral was Saturday at First Brethren Church in Lanark. Interment was at Lanark Cemetery. MILLEDGEVILLE – Shirley E. Nye, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Shirley was born March 1, 1925, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of LeRoy and Laurine (Hardesen) Warehime. She married Homer Nye on Jan. 21, 1945, in Milledgeville. He preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1990. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Milledgeville, a 50-year member of the Order of The Eastern Star, and a proud cancer survivor of 26 years. Homer and Shirley sponsored several Rotary exchange students throughout the years. Shirley loved to travel and play golf, but her greatest love was her family. Survivors include four daughters, Barbara (Ivan) Miller, Janet (Andy) Barkley, and Donna (Randy) Landis, all of Milledgeville, and

SAVANNA – For the second time in 2 weeks, there has been a change on the Savanna City Council. Second Ward Alderman John Peterson submitted a letter of resignation last week because he has found employment outside of town. He offered his help “while I’m living in Savanna,” and said it had been a pleasure working with everyone. He wished all city officials and the city good luck. His resignation was accepted with regret at the Feb. 14 City Council meeting, and Samantha Ritchie was sworn in as the 2nd Ward’s new alderwoman. The previous week, Chris James joined the council, replacing Gary “Scott” Law, who resigned as 4th Ward alderman. The council on Feb. 14 also had a public hearing on, and then approved, vacating Portland Avenue between Poplar and Iris streets.

McCombie bills tackle tax break and tax credit

SPRINGFIELD – More seniors would get a tax break, and a tax credit that’s a little rough around the edges would stay alive if a pair of bills filed by an area lawmaker make their way to the governor’s desk. State Rep. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, filed two bills during the spring legislative session in Springfield. The new 71st District lawmaker is sponsoring House Bill 2834, which would keep the EDGE Tax Credit program alive to spur economic development. The much-criticized Economic Development for a Growing Economy program was set to expire

MOUNT CARROLL – Carroll County law enforcement personnel and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad police arrested four Savanna residents Friday in connection with the January theft of TVs from a railroad car at BNSF’s Savanna yard. Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran said Carroll County deputies, with Savanna and BNSF police, carried out search warrants starting about 8:45 a.m. Friday.

Arrested for possession of stolen property greater than $500 were Blake C. Atherton, 41, Kyle D. Schnitzler Jr., 36, Carla K. Siegwarth, 46, and Richard L. Haring Jr., 35. Haring also was charged with violation of the Cannabis Control Act. All four were held at the Carroll County Jail pending Tuesday appearances in Carroll County court. She said her biggest challenge to date has been has been getting used to the stark differences between city and state government systems. “In city government, if someone has an idea, we talk about it, and it gets through the process pretty quickly, but unfortunately, the House Speaker has so much power, that if the votes aren’t there, good bills can get pulled and they never see the light of day,” McCombie said. Friday was the deadline for introducing bills in the House’s spring session.

The Women’s Committee will be hosting a meeting on Healthy Eating – Dinning Out Done Right at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, here at the Farm Bureau office. The

program will be presented by Janet with the Stephenson County Health Department. The meeting will focus on what to eat when going out to dinner and looking at the best options and choices. This program is one of eight in the Heart to Heart Curriculum. So far, we have chosen only a couple to focus on, but might move on to more in the future. It is open to anyone and everyone! So, please join us at 1 p.m. March 8. We will again be doing a Freezer Meal Fundraiser for our Ag in the Classroom program. ith every bag of soybeans he sells, Mike Cady is reminded that the grain-grower’s landscape is changing, and that he and his partners need to consider following suit. Cady, 48, of Prophetstown, and his partners, Matt and J.C. Henrekin, traditionally farm twothirds corn and onethird soybeans on their 3,700 acres in western Whiteside County. He and Matt also own an Asgrow seed sale business, C&H Seed Systems. Entering a 2017 season in which, yet again, soybeans will be closer to king than corn, the corn seed sales are steady. Soybean seed sales? They’ve doubled, from about 1,500 units – which equate to about 1,500 acres – to 3,000. “From our dealership standpoint, we’ve sold more beans than we ever have,” Cady said. Meanwhile, back on the farm? “We’ve discussed the potential of changing some this season, and we’re still talking about it,” Cady said. Old habits die hard, though, and corn is less demanding when harvest time arrives. Whereas corn can be harvested anytime, soybeans are temperamental – sensitive to moisture and liable to cost the unwary or reckless farmer who brings a water-logged crop to the elevator. “I think people just like growing corn, because no one likes sitting around waiting to harvest beans,” Cady said. Corn is more expensive to produce, but farmers have banked on knowing they could always grow it. The tide it turning,

Grain merchandiser, AgPerspective though. The USDA projects the average corn price to be at $3.30, and soybeans at $9.35. Corn is expected to yield 90.49 million acres, down 3.5 million compared to 2016. Soybeans? Up 5.2 million, to 88.65 million. Buyer beware to the farmer who doesn’t listen to the market. “A lot of people do pattern farm,” Cady said. “You’ve got to be ready to change and try new things.” He’s been farming since 1991, and had his first crop in 1992. He and the Henrekins have slowly taken over the operations from Cady’s dad, Jim, over the past 10 years. Two-thirds corn and one-third beans is the way they’ve always done it. “But they always say the most dangerous thing is doing things they way you’ve always done them, right?” Cady said. “If a grower can shift to more soybeans, profitability tells you to do so,” said Scott Stoller, grain merchandiser with the Dixon-based, family-owned grain consulting firm AgPerspective. “Corn used to be king, but now it’s definitely not there. It’s highly on edge, as we’ve not really seen an opportunity to sell the 2017 harvest and make a profit.” Farmers know it and, perhaps more forebodingly, so do lenders. “It’s a concern, and there are quite a few lenders whose antennae are up,” Stoller said. 4SOYBEANS CONTINUED “I don’t want to be Debby Downer, but commercial ag and production ag on the lending front had a big spotlight on it from the former [presidential] administration,” Stoller said. “From an oversight standpoint, they’ve spent a lot of time the past 12 months under a lot of scrutiny and regulation. That means it’s coming down onto the grower. The buck stops on the grower.” The Midwest is coming off its second-largest crop in history, including a 197-bushel-per-acre soybean crop in Illinois that was 23 bushels above trend. Nationally, the 174.6 bushels per acre were 10 bushels above the trend line. A lot of farmers are still sitting on a considerable amount of their 2016 crop. Some of the storage resulted from holding on to the 2015 crop, but a lot of it came from gambling on corn rallying – and losing. When corn touched $4 for about 2 weeks in mid-June, many farmers didn’t sell enough, Stoller said. That ended up being their only golden selling opportunity of the season. “It’s tough to sell one-third or half of your 2015 crop, and half of your 2016 crop, all at once,” he said. “Committing on selling that much all at once, it’s tough mentally. What happens if this $4 corn goes to $5? I want to make sure I’ve got some bullets left in the gun to sell.” Cady and the Henrekin brothers have on-farm storage and don’t take a lot to the local elevator, and the bulk of their 2016 harvest is marketed. About 20 percent of their 2017 crop has already

LANARK – Young Eastland students who have significant trouble reading might get some extra help this summer. The School Board heard Feb. 14 about a proposed remedial summer reading program for K-2 students. Research shows that not being able to read at the proper level by third grade can have long-term effects, impacting when a student graduates, Eastland Elementary School Principal Angela Mahoney said. Data from spring 2015 to spring 2016 indicated that only 16 percent of Eastland students in the bottom 25 percent of reading skills were meeting their reading growth target. Likewise, only 40 percent of students with individualized reading programs were meeting their reading growth target.

The remedial program also would help combat ground lost during summer break. It would be mandatory, as would parent involvement, and run for 4 hours a day from July 5 to Aug. 4. At present, the proposal calls for a class of 12 or 13 children, with three certified staff and a driver for transportation. The projected cost would be $13,983. “We want to keep it small right now and make sure it’s working right, and work with kids who are at the lowest level,” Mahoney said. The board will hear more information at its March 13 meeting.

Pilgrim said a study from the University of Chicago and the Urban Education Institute rated how supportive an environment various schools are, with 100 being the most supportive. Eastland rates at 65, compared to 54 for similar schools and 48 statewide.

Freeport Aquin (2012) led 30-29 with 5 minutes to play before Galena (28-1) went on a 13-1 run. The Lady Pirates’ Katie Furlong scored 24 points to lead Galena to the return matchup in the final against Eastland, a team it defeated in December. Eastland 62, Pecatonica 45: The Lady Cougars extended a 5-point halftime lead to 14 in the third quarter and coasted. Makenzie Fink and Katie Krogman accounted for 21 of Eastland’s 23 third-quarter points. Fink led the Lady Cougars with 20 points, and Krogman added 19. Alyse Southard’s 15 points topped Pecatonica, with teammate Laura Schulze adding 14 points. Feb. 16 Galena 63, Eastland 58: As Galena inched closer to back-toback sectional titles Thursday night in Pearl City, there wasn’t a soul in the gym that thought Eastland would give in and not push the Pirates in the fourth. Finally, with 3 minutes to go, the Cougars’ surge came. “We told the kids that they were going to make a run,” Galena coach Jamie Watson said, “that they weren’t going to go away.” “It shows that we never give up,” Eastland’s Makenzie Fink said. “We knew how much we were down.” But in the end, after the Pirates were up 13 at half and 10 after the third quarter, they held on for a 63-58 victory in the 1A Pearl City Sectional championship.
