STERLING – One of the law’s most enduring symbols is Lady Justice, blindfolded to prejudice and weighing right and wrong in her scales, a tireless advocate of fairness. Not unlike the Sauk Valley’s own lady justice, Vicki Wright. Wright, 59, was elected in November to her second 10-year term as a judge for the Third District Appellate Court, one of seven judges in the district that includes Whiteside County among its 21-county region. It’s the capstone to a career in law that’s spanned decades and built an enduring legacy of fairness, something she first got a taste for at her father’s diner. As a girl growing up in Sandwich, Wright was informed with a strong sense of right and wrong by her parents. Her father owned Wright’s Diner and would never turn away a homeless person. He would give them a meal in exchange for doing a chore, such as sweeping the sidewalk. It was there that she became accustomed to being around the public and ordinary people who do extraordinary things, like her father, something she’s carried with her into her adult life and that continues to drive her passion for the law. Wright started her law career as an appellate prosecutor for the Third District Appellate Court in 1982 after graduating from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago. She became an assistant state’s attorney in Whiteside County in 1984 and was appointed the first female associate circuit judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit in 1991. She became the

Wright said she credits her career’s longevity to her strong work ethic and passion for neutrality. “Maybe my biggest accomplishment that I’m most proud of is my work ethic,” Wright said. “I never – and I say never – had a scheduled afternoon off in my entire judicial career that allowed me to pursue private hobbies.” One week out of every month, Wright travels to the appellate courthouse in Ottawa to hear cases, but most of her time is spent at her Sterling office. As she looked out of her office window during a recent interview, she said she’s constantly reminded of her small-town upbringing. Across the street is The Big Red Church, run by Wright’s long-time friend, the Rev. Jeff Coester. Wright and Coester have known each other since attending Sandwich Junior High School, now Herman Dummer Middle School, and both graduated from Sandwich High School, Coester in 1974 and Wright in 1975. “I love looking over there and knowing that he’s in that building,” Wright said. “Life just kind of brought us to the same corner but it tells you a lot about the values that we grew up with.” Coester started at the

MORRISON – Two 15-year-old boys are accused of blowing up four mailboxes in Morrison. The boys, arrested after being interviewed at the Sheriff’s Department Jan. 30 and Jan. 31, were released to their parents. They are charged in juvenile court with five counts each of criminal damage to property, of well over $500, Whiteside County Sheriff’s Lt. John Booker said. In Illinois, criminal

damage to property valued at more than $500 is a felony that can carry 1 to 3 years in prison for adults. The penalties usually are less severe for juveniles. The vandalism took place on Dec. 28, Jan. 7 and twice on Jan. 12. A Crime Stoppers tip lead to the arrest of the Morrison boys, Booker said. Christina Wetzell and her family fell victim to the first incident, when an explosion in the mailbox attached to their house in the 600 block of West Lincolnway damaged the siding, a shutter, a railing and an awning outside

Obituaries Joseph R. Evans

SAVANNA – Joseph R. Evans, 87, of Savanna, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, with family by his side. Joseph was born March 4, 1929, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Isabelle (Finley) Evans. In Mason City, he attended Holy Family Catholic School, and then graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School with the class of 1948. Joe served in the Army, attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, then returned to serve in the Army during the Korean War. On April 12, 1958, Joseph married Irene Catherine Whittle at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa. They celebrated 58 years of marriage. Joe had worked in sales for Westinghouse of

Waterloo, Iowa. He then began his 35-year career with Interstate Power in West Union, Iowa, then Elkader, Iowa, and in 1970 they moved to Savanna. At Interstate Power, Joe worked in sales, and later was an easement agent working out of the Dubuque office. Joe was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Savanna, where he also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was instrumental in raising funds to build the new Antl Hall at the church. He was proud of his service to both the Elkader and Savanna communities. In Elkader, he was president and a founding member of Four Oaks Golf Course and member of the Jaycees. Elkader Chamber of Commerce named Joe Elkader’s “Man of the Year” in 1966. In Savanna, he was a Lions Club member and past president of the Chamber of Commerce. Joe mostly loved spending time with family, friends

and neighbors. He was especially involved with the many activities of all his grandchildren. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tending his fruit trees, watching birds, playing euchre, golfing, discussing history and politics, and mostly, Irene’s cooking. Joe will be dearly missed by his wife, Irene of Savanna; six children, Mary (Steve) Haas of Savanna, Paul (Paula) Evans of Algonquin, Tom (Nan) Evans of Seoul, South Korea, Pete (Lisa) Evans of Jerseyville, Pat (Jenny) Evans of Marietta, Georgia, and Helen (Jim) Kovacs of Troutman, North Carolina; 12 grandchildren, Margaret and Anna Haas, Katie and Nathan Evans, Sarah (Andrew) Lohse, Megan, Rachel, and Shannon Evans, Emily (Taryn) Stark, Ali and Matt Evans, and George Evans; two greatgrandchildren, Rory Stark and Vivien Lohse; and two sisters, Pat Diebold of Thousand Palms, California, and Jeannie Herring of Chicago. The next 10 years are sure to hold a lot for Wright, and she looks forward to helping shape the next generation of lawyers, especially women lawyers. When Wright was appointed the first female associate circuit judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit, she had no footprints to follow and she said she wishes she knew half of what she knows now. One thing she stresses to women who apply to be her law clerks is that they are welcome to start a family. Wright, who lives in

Tampico with her husband Karl Kovarik, the 911 Coordinator for Whiteside County, and their two high school and college-aged children, said she waited to have kids until later in life because she was so invested in her career. When the time came for Wright to go on maternity leave, she said she felt like she was burdening the male attorneys who had to cover for her. “So, I tell all the female attorneys that come in here to interview: maternity leave is something that is built into this job. If you want to get pregnant, it’s a given,” she said. Wright sees amazing potential in her current

law clerk, Mitch Johnston of Sterling. She said she hopes she can help him learn from her mistakes so he can get the most out of his life in the legal world. From starting her career on one side of the appellate court bench to ending her career on the other, Wright’s life has come full circle, and although her second term just started, she’s already thinking about the fact that she will be almost 70 when her term is up. She said this will probably be her last term – but then again, who knows? She thought the same thing last year before running for appellate judge for a second time.

CHADWICK – Wilma Jean Baumgardt, 89, of Chadwick, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Good Samaritan Society – Mount Carroll. Wilma was born Aug. 10, 1927, in Wysox Township, Carroll County, the daughter of Edward and Ella (Schreiner) Kness. She attended Chadwick High School, and graduated with the class of 1946. Wilma married Vernon Baumgardt on Feb. 28, 1947. Wilma worked at several jobs over the years in Freeport, most recently at Walmart. She was a member of the Elks Club, and loved to travel, bowl, and spend time with her family and friends. Wilma will be dearly missed by one son, Rick (Janet) Baumgardt of Chadwick; one son-in-law, Eugene Thulen of Savanna; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;

MORRISON – Quinn James of the Cottonwood 4-H Club in Morrison was named the February 4-Her of the Month by the University of Illinois Extension, Whiteside County 4-H Program. James, a 5-year 4-H’er, regularly attends monthly club meetings and is president of her 4-H Club this year. She also is a part of the Federation, the county’s 4-H teen group. She is entered in many different projects this year, including some livestock areas. Each month, 4-H members and volunteers

can be nominated to the be the 4-H’er or volunteer of the month in Whiteside County 4-H. Extension staff then votes on the top nominee after all entries are entered. This year’s theme was “Shatter the Myths,” with students taking a short drug facts quiz. They also signed brick-looking pledges that read, “What I Will Look Like to a Friend Who Might Try to Drink (alcohol). I’m the

Wall Between My Friends and Alcohol.” Aubrey Winslow, middle school SADD sponsor, said, “This week is all about getting the real facts to our students. he Carroll County Farm Bureau Foundation Scholarship applications are out. This year, the Foundation will be giving away $5,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors and college students pursuing ag degrees. Some years we get a lot (like 10) of applicants, and some we get very few (3-4). I think one of the reasons we get so few sometimes is students do not realize how many ag related careers are out there! They see ag and think production agriculture. There is so much more out there, though. More than 200 careers are related to agriculture. Stop and think about the production agriculture. A farmer would not be able to do any of his job if he didn’t have the banker, the agronomist, the seed salesman, the implement dealer with its employees and the repair technician, the meteorologist, the trucker, the insurance man, etc. The list goes on and on. Once the farmer sells his product, think of the grocer,

Most of us have a job related to agriculture that we don’t even realize! So parents, get those students filling out their applications. Also, make sure they fill them out completely. It never fails; we end up with a great application that is missing a key component. The CCFB Board has decided this year to focus on priorities versus strategic planning. One of the areas of focus is getting more responses on Farm Bureau Action Requests. It is more crucial now than ever before that we voice our support or opposition on bills, rules, and regulations that are going to affect our industry. Therefore the board has developed an incentive program. First off, we need more farmers signed up to take part in the request. We are offering an incentive to sign up, along with an incentive to respond to requests, report requests,

Pizza Ranch, a franchise known for a buffet that features pizza, chicken, and a variety of sides, salad, and desserts, will open Monday at 3900 E. Lincolnway. The restaurant will have a pickup window, and it makes deliveries.
