Obituaries Peggy L. Bell
AVA, Mo. – Peggy Lou Bell, 76 years, 4 months, and 12 days old, passed away Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri, with her family by her side. Peggy was born June 10, 1940, in Douglas County, Missouri, to Arthur and Carrie (Rhoades) Coonts. As a child, Peggy attended East Dogwood School and Evans Church. Peggy enjoyed shopping, yard sales, auctions, watching wrestling, and word searches. She enjoyed cooking for family dinners and spending time with her grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, family, and friends. Peggy is survived by three daughters, Sherry (Gary Shelton) Bell of Ava, Cathy Craig of Stockton, and Connie Downs of Lanark; one son, Gordon (Sharon) Bell of Ava; seven grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Harley, Cecil, James, Paul, Russell, and Junior; four sisters, Betty Critten, Mae Coonts, Vernice Dehaven, and Edwina Schrock; and one grandson, Braxton Bell. Visitation is at 1 p.m. today at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home in Ava, with services to follow at 2 p.m., with Oren Alcorn, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Ava Cemetery.Memorials

MOUNT CARROLL – Jury contamination, a probation officer’s testimony, and other elements are part of a defense motion to reverse the guilty verdict in a Freeport man’s murder trial. Morgan D. Hake, 50, was found guilty Sept. 23 in Carroll County Court of first-degree murder in the Dec. 5 slaying of his wife, Suzanne Hake. Hake’s Moline-based attorneys, Daniel P. Dalton and Nate Nieman, filed a judgment notwithstanding the verdict Oct. 5. The motion asks that a judge reverse the jury’s verdict when the judge believes there was no factual basis for the verdict, or the verdict was contrary to law. An alternative motion would be for a new trial. The defense cited five reasons to consider in the motion: • Spectators’ pre-trial statements contaminated the panel of prospective jurors and infringed on Hake’s right
to a fair trial. The attorneys said some panel members heard statements about the case made by spectators sitting in the gallery before the trial began. Morgan D. Hake • Justina Kidd, Hake’s probation officer from Stephenson County, should not have been allowed to testify on issues concerning Hake’s marriage. Dalton and Nieman said the difficulties were irrelevant, far back in time, and Hake was surprised by the information. • Autopsy photos should not have been sent back with the jury for deliberations. • The state failed to prove the elements of first-degree murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Hake argued self-defense at the trial, and, Dalton and Nieman said “the state failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant was not acting in self defense when Suzanne Hake died.” • Even if the state proved the

THOMSON – A Bowling Green, Florida, man has been identified as the victim in a fatal, twovehicle crash north of Thomson. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release that it responded at 2:55 p.m. Oct. 13 to a report of an accident on state Route 84 near Four Mile Road. A minivan driven by Felix Martinez-Lopez, 36, also of Bowling Green, was
crossing Route 84 from a private lane when it was struck by a car southbound on Route 84 driven by Jon T. Green, 43, of Wayne, Michigan. Leopoldo DeJesus CalixFigueroa, 23, was ejected from the van. He, along with the other passengers, was taken to Mercy Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, where he was pronounced dead. Also in the van were Pedro Martinez-Lopez, 42, Elidio Perez-Ramirez,

SAVANNA – Savanna Mayor Tony McCombie, Republican candidate for state representative from the 71st District, announced the formation of a small business leaders coalition to discuss the issues they face in Illinois. “We have to make Illinois business friendly once again” McCombie said. “It’s time to take a hard look at why so many businesses are leaving our state to set up shop elsewhere. If we keep businesses in Illinois, people will stay in Illinois. As long as people are fleeing the state, our tax rates will continue to climb,

In deciding whether a mitigating factor is present, you should consider all of the evidence bearing on this question.” Hake’s attorneys claim that he did prove that he thought that circumstances justified the use of deadly force, and the jury should have returned a verdict on second-degree murder where Hake adequately proved “imperfect self-defense.” Scott Brinkmeier, Carroll County state’s attorney, recently said the motion will be taken up Nov. 4, at Hake’s sentencing. If the motion is denied, sentencing will proceed.

Financial review score same as last year, district learns BY MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate
SAVANNA – Once again, there are “no significant deficencies” in the West Carroll district’s financial profile, the school board learned during its Oct. 19 meeting. The district’s financial profile is 3.35, the same as last year. But Jenny Blocker, of the accounting firm Benning Group in Freeport, did point out some minor items to the board. People in each of the district’s buildings should be using the same accounting models, she said. And the parent-teacher organization should not be under the same tax umbrella as the district, which should be an easy fix, Blocker said.
Board approves resignations, hires coaches SAVANNA – After a closed session Oct. 19, the West Carroll school board approved the resignations of Amy Foster, Primary School special education pre-K teacher, and Kimberly Sturtevant, an aide at the Middle School. The board also approved the coaching recommendations of Brenden Schultz as a volunteer high school girls basketball coach, Bob Kallemyn, volunteer middle school wrestling She lauded the “tremendous job” done by district bookkeeper Denise Noordoff and the West Carroll staff in preparing for the audit and working with her and her team.

district’s technology infrastructure, with Brumbaugh stating that the district looked to be eligible for 85 to 90 percent rate discount for these items. This would allow the district to upgrade its servers and internet points “to make sure the day-to-day things are running as smoothly as possible for our staff, at a significant cost reduction for the district.” Asked by board member Fred Tipton what the total cost for this work might be, Brumbaugh said that it would be something less than $200,000 over a 4-year period. With the rebate, he said, “you’re looking at a $30,000 investment for the district to get $200,000 worth of equipment.”

No endorsement for unpresidential hopefuls

ewspaper editorial boards traditionally evaluate candidates running for president based on a set of core values. Among those core values for Sauk Valley Media, parent company of Prairie Advocate, are fiscal conservatism, limited government, personal responsibility and accountability, a belief in a strong family structure, and a staunch protection of First Amendment rights. Apply those values to the two major-party candidates for U.S. president, and neither passes. The Republican, Donald Trump, is a shallow, narcissistic – perhaps sociopathic – bully who treats women as sex objects, belittles the handicapped, and has skin so thin he lashes out on Twitter against anyone who opposes him. Just when you think Trump’s campaign has hit bottom, a new, far-worse scandal breaks.
Take the 2005 video and audio recording of Trump’s conversation with then “Access Hollywood” host Billy Bush that broke recently. On the recording, Trump vulgarly discusses kissing and groping women who “let you do it” just because he’s a celebrity. He later apologized for his words, but attempted to deflect the criticism away from himself by cowardly criticizing his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, for her husband’s, former President Bill Clinton, sexual affairs. Trump also dismissed his words as “locker room talk.” Make no mistake – his words went well beyond “locker room talk.” In the audio, Trump was bragging about sexual assault. On policy, Trump is ignorant and dangerously uninformed. He outrageously claimed to know more about the military than U.S. generals. He touted the ridiculous plan to build a thousand-
mile-long wall along the U.S. border with Mexico and make Mexico pay for it. He said the U.S. government should close mosques for no other reason than because Muslims worship there. He said he would place new restrictions on the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of the press by opening up libel laws. These are just a few of his policy positions that are either unconstitutional, economically impossible or, well, scary. Not to mention Trump’s stubborn refusal in Wednesday night’s debate to say whether he would accept the results of the November election if he loses to Clinton. His assertion that the election is rigged is both
unmerited and dangerous. It is disqualifying. Pure and simple, Trump is incapable of taking any action that is outside his own immediate selfinterests. He has the impulse control of a puppy. He is unqualified and unworthy of holding absolutely any public office, let alone being considered as the leader of the free world. Clinton, Trump’s Democratic rival, is an arrogant, out-of-touch, selfentitled career politician who voters don’t trust – and rightfully so. She’s also a fiscal liberal who would likely continue President Barack Obama’s debt accumulation through big government spending programs. Displaying unpresidential
judgment, Clinton used a private email server to conduct official government business instead of a far-more-secure State Department email system during her tenure as secretary of state, which violated State Department rules. She claimed that no classified material was stored on the private server, but a Justice Department investigation revealed that claim to be untrue. Her private system was more susceptible to hacking, which endangered national security. During the investigation, Clinton’s lawyers turned over about 30,000 emails but deleted thousands of others before they could be reviewed. Clinton was slow to take responsibility for the gaffe, and recent WikiLeaks releases reveal that she and her team privately fretted over the scandal while planning to publicly play it down. Her lack of transparency in the scandal is unforgivable.
200 nations met again to search for solutions to global warming, many of them with rising seas lapping at their feet. Yet many politicians, especially Republicans, resist cutting greenhouse gases. Gerrymandering allows the party in power to set district boundaries that favor their candidates. Democrats received 1.4 million more votes for the House of Representatives in 2012, yet Republicans won more seats.
Congress is so deadlocked I doubt if it could decide on a bathroom break. Hardheaded radicals don’t seem to understand that in order for a democracy to function there MUST be some amount of compromise. Politicians of diverse economic, social, and religious philosophies have to find middle ground they can all live with, and the process must be peaceful and orderly. What a tragedy that our right-wing populist candidate who has come to “save us”
from our government’s failures, spends most of his time angrily defending his own massive ego, and threatening to sue or jail anyone who opposes him. Even more alarming, he’s spreading the rumor that the election is rigged. No Donald, studies have shown that U.S. elections are really very honest with just a few technical or clerical errors. There is no “crooked, evil, force” stealing your victory. You’ve won your

In addition, Bill and Hillary Clinton’s involvement in the Clinton Foundation and its dealings with foreign leaders, at best, raises questions about the integrity of Mrs. Clinton’s work as secretary of state. Unfortunately, voters have no good choice for president this year. As we believe with the major-party candidates, none of the third-party candidates are remotely qualified to serve. In these unprecedented times, we find ourselves unable to reach a consensus on a qualified and viable candidate. We regret that the poor choices in this race led us to a non-decision, but we will not lower our standards for the sake of endorsing an unworthy candidate. We encourage our readers to conduct their own research and vote their consciences at the polls, and we encourage all citizens to cast a vote for the candidate they believe will best serve the country for the next 4 years.

German research, examining 800 elections in 20 nations, found that after a major recession rightwing populist candidates increased their vote share by 30 percent. (Rana Foroohar, Time Magazine) The U.S. is no exception. People are looking for a messiahlike figure to change the government they no longer trust, and there’s plenty of room for distrust. The U.S. has one of the greatest levels of financial
disparity in the developed world. Unskilled workers are dropping below the poverty level, while the U.S. is home to 49 percent of the world’s multimillionaires worth $50 million or more. As Donald Trump has made painfully clear, the wealthy are able to avoid their fair share of the tax burden, with plenty of loopholes for both corporations and individuals. While Republicans are balking at maintaining the present level of Social Security payments, Global Age Watch rates the US 29th in income security for senior citizens, with 18 percent falling below the poverty level. As bad as the media has portrayed Donald Trump, it can’t quite overshadow the corruption and dishonesty of Hillary Clinton. If you’ve read about or have any knowledge of Donald Trump the father, the businessman, you would know he’s not a monster, as portrayed by the left. He’s no perfect man, much like the left’s savior, Bill Clinton! And if you find your news from somewhere other than
the mainstream media, you would have a pretty good idea of the corruption in Washington and the Clintons. Eight years of going downhil is enough – Obamacare failing, manufacturing leaving the U.S., illegal immigration, stagnant middle class wages. And, under Obama, most gains have gone to the top 1 percent. Fact check that! We need the gains to go to the job creators, not the speculators or the hedge fund managers. Manafacturing will come back under only an unhostile business climate. Vote for real change. Vote Trump.

As a member of the CASA board, I would like to urge you to consider becoming a CASA volunteer, and I would like to let you know about an exciting event we are hosting. CASA serves the children of Lee, Ogle, and Carroll counties. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are trained individuals who are appointed by a judge to speak for the best interests of a child in court. These children are at risk due to abuse and neglect
in situations they do not deserve to be in. A CASA volunteer provides a judge with factual information regarding the child to help the court make positive decisions for the child’s future. As you can imagine, our CASA board is working hard to keep a balanced budget. Throughout the year we hold many fundraisers to keep help fund the CASA program. On Saturday, Nov.5, we are hosting a Dueling Pianos event at the LaBranche in Polo. All tip proceeds will go to CASA. It’s a fun, entertaining night. If you would like more

llinois Farm Bureau is working with commodity groups on farm bill listening sessions. The current farm bill will be in place for a couple of years, but the discussion for the next farm bill is right around the corner. We’d like to hear your thoughts! You’ll have three opportunities next month to offer ideas on what is important to you in the next federal farm bill. We are working with Illinois Beef, Corn, Pork, and Soybean associations to host listening sessions throughout Illinois in November. The closest session to us is at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau office at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 29. If you are interested in attending, please contact our office to register. Requests have been coming in on doing another freezer meal program. We will be doing one before the holidays. This time, we will offer up another option other than that set of 10 meals. We are going to offer up individual meals. How is that going to work? Well, 5 meals will be portioned individually and you will receive two of each meal. A perfect gift idea for that older couple or widower. Last year for
Christmas, I did this for my grandma. It gave her some good home cooked food with the ease of just having to warm it up. So, keep your eye out as more information will be coming out soon! As I type this, it is Monday and 85 degrees out. I admit I turned the air on in the house this morning, as last night it felt a million degrees with the humidity. It was 71 when I hit the gym at 5:30 a.m.! But then I get here to work ,and we do not have either the air or the heat on and it is 72 in here and I am frozen! The brick building stays cold with its lack of humidity. No wonder my allergies and sinuses are flared! What is your favorite cheese? Right now, Americans have a thing for mozzarella cheese. NICAA Golden Meals program has expanded its services to include more home delivery routes in the Shannon area, for the town of Shannon and the rural areas surrounding it. The home-delivery program is for any senior citizen aged 60 or over who would benefit from having a meal delivered to their home on a daily basis. Delivery will be available Monday through Friday. Carroll County Tax-Aide prepares Carroll County AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation and assistance service, is preparing for the 2017 tax season. This year will see some changes to the program. The IRS has changed software providers; thus, counselors will not be able to access old returns as of October 31. It is extremely important that all taxpayers bring the previous year’s returns to their appointment. Next year, previous returns will be available but not this tax season. Experienced and new volunteers will be training in the new software as well as the ever-changing tax law. Materials arrive in November so that counselors are prepared for the tax season. Patience might be needed as everyone adjusts to the new program. Tax-Aide volunteers will be providing free income tax return preparation services beginning in February. In addition to the Carroll County Senior Center, Thomson York Township Public Library will provide services. Site schedules will be available in January. Training materials arrive in late November with class instruction starting in January. Practice sessions

Beware of tax scams: Tips from AARP Fraud Watch Network Tax scams are increasing with many seniors receiving stressful calls. AARP Tax-Aide urges you to watch out for these common tax scams. IRS Imposters: You get a call from someone claiming to be an IRS employee, saying you owe taxes, and threatening to arrest you if you don’t pay immediately. The call may seem legitimate because the caller ID says it’s from the IRS. The caller may even know part of your Social Security Number. If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone! The IRS will never call and request payment without first sending a for the new software will also be added this year. Last year, the Carroll County site assisted over 600 taxpayers- 99% of the returns were electronically filed and 100% were Quality Reviewed. According to the recent census, this represents 20% of Carroll County citizens aged 65 and older. Activities at the Senior Center Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/ or haul the papers to the distribution center. Exercise equipment at Senior Center The Carroll County Senior Center now has six pieces of professional-grade equipment available: Treadmill, rowing machine, Stair Stepper, E-Force cross trainer, and recumbent bicycle. What do you do with your old cellphones? Carroll County Senior Center has a donation box for old and broken cellphones. We recycle them by sending them to a company that refurbishes them for emergency 911 phones in areas devastated by disasters and for sale to low income persons. We have recently received $15 for phone refunds. There is one box at the Senior Center now. If the program goes well, we will increase the number of boxes and place them in other areas around the county. If you know of anyone looking to get rid of old cellphones, ask them to drop them off at the Carroll County Senior Center during our regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Seniors Around the County GRO – Great River Outreach The Great River Outreach offers a delicious meal, friendship, and good conversation at two locations. In Savanna, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the former Chestnut Park School near Poopy’s, south of town on state Route 84. In Mount Carroll, food is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carroll United Methodist Church. Any age is welcome. Donations are accepted but not required. Penny Von Essen cooks for both locations and food is brought to Mount Carroll. Volunteers are involved in this endeavor. Why eat alone? Consider joining the group often! Are You Turning 65? A total of 393 youth dairy enthusiasts from around the world donned their show whites and entered the show ring to show the judge how well they could present an animal on a halter. Participants were broken into three divisions – Junior (ages 9 to 13), Intermediate (14-17) and Senior (18-21). “I always thought I was going to get beat by my brother and my
cousins,” Erbsen said of showmanship. “I never was in the first- or secondplace position at the local shows until recently. Once I realized I could compete and be in the top, I started to work more with my animals, getting up every morning before school and giving them their show ration and washing them twice a week during the summer.” Erbsen said showing dairy cows allows her to build a relationship with her heifers that continues as they become cows.
“My heifer I am showing this year is from New York,” she said. “Most of the cattle I show we breed on our farm. I am proud of the cattle my dad breeds. He continues to make each generation better, and allows my brother and I the opportunity to show at the national level.” Participants in the show were from the United States, Canada, Germany, Holland and the United Kingdom. Other Lanark participants included Connor and Payton Erbsen in the Intermediate division.

Do you qualify for extra help with your prescription drug costs? Extra Help is the federal assistance program that helps individuals with limited finances pay for their Medicare prescription drug costs. In 2016, individuals who receive $1,485 or less each month and have $13,640 or less in assets should qualify for Extra Help. In 2016, couples who receive $2,003 or less each month and have $27,250 or less in assets should qualify for Extra Help. Do not count your home, vehicles,
personal possessions, life insurance, burial plots, irrevocable burial contracts or back payments from Social Security or SSI as assets. If you have Medicaid, a Medicare savings program, or you receive Supplemental Security Income, you should get Extra Help automatically. Carroll County Court House to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the three months before, the month of, and the three months following your 65th birthday. Your IEP will span from September 2016 to March 2017. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first three months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums. MOUNT CARROLL – The “High Times” website on the computer in the mock bedroom was a telltale sign, but other, less-known details lurked. An emptied deodorant tube was used to hidd needles for injecting drugs. A CocaCola wrapper masked the real identity of a beer can. An unusual numbers of candles sat in case the nonexistent owner of the room attempted to mask the scents of marijuana. The “Hidden in Plain Sight” display, consisting of 35 signs that a teenager might be using alcohol or illegal drugs, was a central part of the Carroll County Substance Education
Coalition’s town hall meeting Oct. 17 at Mount Carroll Church of God. A panel of law enforcement officials and counselors talked about the effects of underage alcohol and drug use, after Carroll County Circuit Judge Val Gunnarson addressed the problem of parental lack of caring. “Very often, kids are there for some kind of substance abuse issue,” Gunnarson said of juvenile court. ‘More often, it’s a grandparent there instead of a parent. I might say, where’s Mom? ‘She’s working, she couldn’t come.’ Suppose Mom is there, and I might ask if Dad’s there. ‘He’s busy.’ Sometimes, there’s no dad.” “Who cares? Who cares?” Gunnarson said, adding, “...
We have to push against the fog of just not caring.” The crowd of about 25 participants watched a video on the effects of underage drinking and ways to fight against it. Several statistics were listed, among them that 1,700 college students die each year from alcoholrelated injuries. Part of the issue is that today, children have reported taking their first sips of alcohol at ages 9 or 10, and that some alcohol tastes like lemonade or other sweet drinks. “Pay attention to where events take place and how we drink alcohol,” the narrator advised. Listeners were encouraged to set a good example for children, and to not provide alcohol or allow easy access
to alcohol. After the video, audience members asked questions of the panel. Tamara Wolf with Sinnissippi Centers listed four risk factors for youth substance abuse. “Look at your family history,” Wolf said. “Also, look at the family tree for mental health issues or struggles. Youth also are at risk if they think they’re different in some way from others, or if they’ve experienced any sort of trauma.” Kyle Simmons, with the Carroll County Probation office, said it is important for parents to talk to parents, even those parents who may act as if underage drinking isn’t a problem.

Superintendent Mark Hansen said. “The upgrades to the wireless [infrastructure] will effectively increase our internet speeds and capacity by five times,” Hansen wrote in an email to Sauk Valley Media. STERLING – Russ Siefken’s last ride as executive director of United Way of Whiteside County is moving at a nice pace. Midway through the 2016 campaign, $361,000 of the target $700,000 already has been raised, he announced Friday morning at the annual campaign kickoff, held at a Business Before Breakfast at Woodlawn Arts Academy. “Really, it’s a little bit higher than it has been in years past,” Siefken said. Then things got mighty emotional. Campaign Chairman Robbie Minor, spoke briefly, then Whiteside County Sheriff Kelly Wilhelmi put the local chapter’s power into perspective. He reflected a few years back, when April House, an advocacy center for abused children in Morrison, was able to scrape together only about $20,000 of its annual budget of $85,000. Partnering with United Way for 2017, April House will have about $79,000 of its $85,000 budget. Wilhelmi lauded April House Executive Director Johanna Hager, who was in attendance Friday. She doesn’t interview kids, but she makes them as comfortable as possible to tell their story once. In years past, they’d be interviewed multiple times. “It muddied the waters and made it awfully hard
to make a conviction,” Wilhelmi said. “After a child was interviewed by maybe a dozen people, it was hard to get the absolute truth. Watching Johanna work is the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen, so a big thanks to United Way and everyone involved.” Minor, vice president of investment services at Sauk Valley Bank, is also a father of three girls. “It’s eye-opening,” Minor said of Wilhelmi’s nod to April House and United Way. “We’re fortunate in this community to have those sort of resources. My kids are going to be born and raised in this community, so you want to make sure there’s different avenues for them. “It also teaches the kids and the high school students who were here that not a lot of communities have the sort of resources we have here.” United Way’s government and leadership divisions already have exceeded their 2015 contributions, by 110 and 107 percent, respectively. Several schools – Rock Falls High and Middle, Merrill Elementary, East Coloma-Nelson, and Sterling High, Challand Middle and Lincoln Elementary, all in Sterling – all increased their penny program contributions this year. As of Friday morning, the penny program had raised 511,593 of its 1 million pennies goal. Penny barrels in Morrison, East Coloma, Tampico and Franklin
elementaries in Sterling were all to be picked up Friday. The major firms division still has a hill to climb – it has raised 14 percent of a $240,000 goal, although Chris Mitchell, a division chairwoman, pointed out that five presentations were given at Frantz this week, and one each at Dana Corp. and Halo
Branded Solutions. CGH Medical Center and Wahl Clipper are coming up. Maybe the hardest thing Mitchell had to do this year, though, is hand a script to Siefken on Thursday. She types up all the scripts leading up to the kickoff event. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s the last script he’s

“We were having trouble stopping them, they’re so dynamic offensively, so once we got it in there, our offensive coordinator had a great call and executed it really well,” Schlemmer said. “I can’t take the credit. The kids executed the play.” The Barbs (7-2 overall) were led by quarterback Derek Kyler, who went 16-for-40 for 272 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, along with rushing for 121 yards and two scores. His favorite targets on the day were Cole Tucker (6 catches, 66 yards, TD) and Zuerek Day (4 catches, 121 yards, 2 TDs). With Sterling (9-0) leading 28-21 late in the fourth quarter, Kyler led the team on a 7-play, 70-yard drive that featured a 27-yard pass to Day on third-and-28 and a 40-yard connection to Tyrese Dyson, and capped it with a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:13 remaining. Then things got wacky. Before DeKalb kicker Connor Tierney could come out and tie it 28-28, the stadium lights went out to extend the suspense another 20 minutes. Weckler laughed that he had never seen that happen before in a game. “We had to keep the kids focused,” Weckler said of the delay. “They’re high school kids, so just like anything else – when something strange happens, you have to keep them focused. The biggest thing was to keep them warm.” For Sterling, running back Nyrel Sullivan had 108 rushing yards and two touchdowns and scored on a 3-yard run to open up overtime. DeKalb answered with a 10-yard run by Day to make it 35-35. In the second overtime, Kyler found Tucker on a slant for a 10-yard touchdown on the first play to give DeKalb its first lead of the game, but Sterling answered with Spaulding’s touchdown and the 2-point

On the second play of the game, Sterling defensive end Treay Martin scooped up a fumble and took it 27 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter, with the Warriors leading 14-7, DeKalb got inside the Sterling 10-yard line but fumbled it again – this time, it was Elias Edmondson jumping on the loose ball on the 9. “All year we’ve been very good at controlling the ball and not turning it over, and the turnover ratio has been been in our favor all year,”
