Savanna mayor Chris Lain resigns effective May 6 By MICHAEL MILLER

For the Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – Mayor Chris Lain announced his resignation at the April 26 council meeting. His last official day will be Friday, May 6. Mayor Pro Tem Pat Sanchez will fill the role until the city council appoints a replacement. Sanchez chairs the Finance Committee, TIF Committee and Streets Committee. An election for mayor will appear on the April 2023 ballot as a two-year unexpired term. “It has been the greatest honor of my life serving the citizens of Savanna as their mayor,” Lain said in a news

release. “And this was not an easy decision. However, sometimes life takes you in directions you didn’t expect. “I am so proud if all we have achieved in my time as mayor [is to] know future Chris Lain leaders will benefit from the plans and financial stability we are able to leave for them. I thank all of the citizens of Savanna who believed in me and put their faith in my abilities. Savanna will always have a big place in my heart. I wish everyone the best. I can-

not wait to watch Savanna continue to grow from the private sector.” The council accepted his resignation with regret. Other Action In other action, the council approved the second reading of three ordinances that would allow for the annual 3% rate hike on water rates and the basic user rates for citizens of the city. The council also approved the second reading of an ordinance approving the annual budget for fiscal 2022-23 and an ordinance that will allow recycling and garbage collection fees to increase by 3.5%.

Kaitlyn Dugan was hired as an administrative employee at a hourly rate of $17 an hour starting May 2. The council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would approve city employee pay increases, a 3.5% increase for the police department and public works, a 3.5% increase for the administrative department and a 4% increase for the department heads. Council members also approved a first reading of an ordinance that would approve loans with the Savanna Thomson State Bank to help finance the purchase of a new tanker/pumper truck for the fire department, the cost of which will be $310,635.

No injuries after bridge hit by barge near Savanna SAVANNA – The Savanna-Sabula bridge that spans the Mississippi River was temporarily closed April 24 after being hit by a barge around noon. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said traffic was halted for both lanes of the bridge. On April 25, the Savanna Fire Department issued a news release stating the fire department was dispatched for several barges that had broken free from their tug at 10:48 a.m. April 24 and were drifting toward the bridge.

“It was also reported that three employees were on board one of the sections that had broken free. The Savanna Fire Department responded with two fire boats and were quickly able to remove the three employees from the barge,” the release said. The 6-barge section occupied by the employees, a 2-barge section and a single, already had made it past the bridge before the fire department arrived on the scene, the release said. The Savanna Police Department told the fire department that the single

barge had struck the bridge and was taking on water, the release said. “A tug from Sabula (Larson) had been contacted and was able to gain control of the six and two section units on the Iowa side while the sinking single eventually ran aground out of the channel on the Illinois side,” the release said. “While this was taking place in front of Savanna, the tug that lost the barges was busy gathering up additional barge sections that were

still north of the bridge. “Due to the collision with the bridge, the Illinois Department of Transportation along with the Savanna Fire Department, Savanna Police Department and law enforcement from Iowa shut down the bridge for several hours while crews inspected the bridge for damage. IDOT opened the bridge just after 2 p.m. No injuries were reported.”

White pelicans and gulls feed behind one pilot boat as it moves a barge north on the Mississippi River recently while another boat waits to pass through the lock at Lock & Dam 13 between Fulton and Thomson. Several barges broke loose from their pilot boat April 24 and stuck the Savanna-Sabula bridge causing traffic to be closed on the bridge while crews performed safety inspections. The bridge reopened later in the day.

MOUNT CARROLL — Bucky Halker, a folk singer and historian who tours throughout the U.S. and Europe, will perform “This Land is Your Land: The Folksongs of Woody Guthrie” at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Community House, 101 N. Main St., Mount Carroll. The event, which is sponsored by The Friends of the Mount Carroll District Library, NFP, is free and open to the public. Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) is Ameri-

ca’s most legendary folksong writer. His music continues to uplift and excite musicians around the world. Inspired by Guthrie’s most famous song, “This Land is Your Bucky Halker Land,” the show features a performance by Halker (gui-

tar and vocals) of several Guthrie songs, as well as commentary on the time period of each song. Halker has 15 albums to his credit, including “Anywhere but Utah: Songs of Joe Hill,” a musical tribute to martyred labor songwriter Joe Hill and “The Ghost of Woody Guthrie,” an original music tribute to the wellknown historic folksinger. The event is made possible through a grant from the Illinois Humanities

McCombie launches summer reading program STERLING – State Rep. Tony McCombie is launching her sixth annual Summer Reading Club for elementary school students who live or go to school in the 71st District. The “Reading BUZZ” program is offered to encourage students to start or continue positive reading habits. “I have always been an avid reader and, as you can imagine, goal driven! I want kids to join our reading challenge and hopefully make memories they share later in their lives. Reading was a passion of my Grandma Reagans and we shared a lot of time together read-

ing. This program could be a time for families to unplug, enjoy the quiet and each other’s company,” McCombie said. Participation in the program can overlap with any other summer reading program offered through area libraries, schools or other organizations. Omer Lyle Deets Born in Carroll County to Glenn and Avis (Buxton) Deets. Graduated from Milledgeville High School in 1945 and was the last surviving member of his class. Long time member of Harvest Time Bible Church. Omer married Joyce Rogene Zier in 1951 at the First Brethren Church in Milledgeville, IL. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and Sister-in-Law Opal (Paul) Deets; Daughter Leanne Deets Reecher of Jacksonville, FL and Son Norman O.L (Marti) Deets of Milled-

geville; Special granddaughter Lindsey (Andy) Pfister and great grandsons, Ben and Jack of Plymouth, WI.; Special grandson Tim (Erin) Deets and great grandchildren, twins Liliana and Cillian, Cian and Lorelai of Winnebago, IL. Farming more than 70 years was his joy in life. Omer enjoyed many winters in BareFoot Bay, FL playing golf and softball. He relished attending his grandchildren’s school and sports activities. A private burial took place at the South Elkhorn cemetery in Milledgeville. A memorial service will be held at the Polo Senior Center in Polo, IL May 7, 2022 at 10:30 AM with a meal afterward. The Cardinals scored 66 points and the Panthers finished with 60. Woodstock North won the team title (91), followed by Rockford Christian (86) and Winnebago (76).
