Deadline nears for scholarship applications, meal orders There still are a few days to get those scholarship applications in for the 2022-23 Carroll County Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships. Applications are available on our website at carrollcfb.org. We prefer the forms be filled out electronically. Deadline is March 7. March 7 also is the day orders are due for our freezer meal fundraiser. If you have not placed your order yet, you still have time. You can fill out the electronic order form on our website at carrollcfb.org. You will have the option to pay with a card or send a check to our office. Forms also are available at our office and on our Facebook page. The set includes 10 frozen meals and feeds three to five depending on your eaters. Cost is $170. This spring, the menu is hickory smoked pulled pork, barbecue pulled chicken, country fried steak with gravy, smoked pork loin, sweet chili meatballs, shaved barbecue beef, broccoli cheese soup, baked mostaccioli, chicken bacon ranch pasta and pulled pork macaroni and cheese. Take the hassle out of trying to figure out what is for dinner and having to shop! Pickup will be from 1 to 4 p.m. March 23. The fundraiser supports our Ag in the Classroom program. ••• For years, I have felt Tucker should do something with sports. He has loved sports since he was born. David Schmit named interim executive director for NWILED HANOVER – David Schmit has been named interim executive director of Northwest Illinois Economic Development after the departure of Emily Legel. Legel had been the executive director of NWILED since July 2019. She is pursuing a new opportunity within the economic development industry; her final day with the company was Feb. 18, a news release said. Schmit joined NWILED in September 2020 as the organization’s program coordinator. In his new role, he will work in tandem with the NWILED board of directors to advance the organization’s mission and strategic goals, the release said. “I and the board are wholeheartedly thankful to Emily Legel for her great service to NWILED,” said Joe Mattingley, vice chair of the NWILED Board of Directors. “Her efforts have positively

impacted numerous businesses, led to the partnership and administration of the Genz Memorial Investment Fund, in addition to many key projects and initiatives. “I also want to David Schmit thank David Schmit for accepting the interim executive director position while the board works through the selection of its next executive director. NEWS BRIEF Health Department offers drive up, no appointment necessary SHIELD testing

No appointment is needed for COVID-19 testing through the Whiteside County Health Department’s Community Based Drive-Up Testing Site. Individuals seeking testing simply will be able to drive up to the tent during testing hours. A SHIELD IL account still will be required to view results. To create an account, visit shieldilportal.pointnclick.com and use agency code df5brbrj. Officials hope this change will help individuals more easily access testing as soon as they develop symptoms and keep cases low by identifying positive cases early. The Whiteside County Health

Department also will be expanding testing hours on Thursdays to offer additional evening opportunities for testing. The testing site is closed daily for a meal break from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The schedule is 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday; 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. NEWS BRIEF Wild Winter Wednesday program is March 30

FULTON – The Windmill Volunteer Educators at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton invite the public to attend the Wild Winter Wednesday program Wednesday, March 30. Programs are free and open to the public. The final program of the season will be a Mill Flour Bake Off. All entries must use de Immigrant ground flour. Guests will judge the entries for best tasting, and each of the Bake Off entries

will be available for sale by donation on a first-come, first-bid basis. In conjunction with the Bake Off, organizers will be displaying artwork by local students. Doors open at 9 a.m. for coffee, tea and mill treats. The program begins about 9:20 a.m. The building, located at 111 10th Ave., is disability accessible. MOUNT CARROLL – The Carroll County U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency announced that Kurt Krum of Mount Carroll was elected to represent his local administrative area (LAA 3) during the recent county committee election. Christopher Flikkema will serve as the first alternate. “County committee members are a critical component of the day-today operations of FSA,” said Julie Skiles, County Executive Director. “They help deliver programs at the county level and work to serve the needs of local producers. All recently elected county committee members will take office in March and will be joining the existing committee members.” Every FSA office is served by a county committee made up of local farmers, ranchers and foresters who are elected by local producers. Other members currently serving on the FSA county committee include Christopher Fink and Larry Alexander. Ronda Imel serves as the adviser. County committee members impact the administration of FSA within a community by applying

their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support programs, conservation programs, indemnity and disaster programs, emergency programs and eligibility. County committee members provide a service to local producers through their decision-making and ensure the fair and equitable administration of FSA farm programs in their counties. County committee members are accountable to the Secretary of Agriculture. Members conduct hearings and reviews as requested by the state committee, ensure that underserved farmers, ranchers and foresters are fairly represented, make recommendations to the state committee on existing programs, monitor changes in farm programs and inform farmers of the purpose and provisions of FSA programs. They also assist with outreach and inform underserved producers such as beginning farmers, ranchers and foresters about FSA opportunities. Eighth grader Quinten Atutis from River Ridge wins regional spelling bee Quinten Atutis, an eighth grade student from River Ridge Elementary School, is the champion of the regional spelling bee sponsored by the Regional Office of Education 8. The competition involved spellers from area schools. Because of the pandemic, the competition was a virtual event in which spellers participated through the Scripps Online Testing Platform. Atutis advanced to compete in the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C. The semifinals are June 1 and the finals are June 2 and they will be televised on national networks ION and Bounce and hosted by actor, director, educator and lifelong children’s literacy advocate LeVar Burton. In addition to qualifying for the

national finals, Atutis won these prizes: • First-place trophy from the Regional Office of Education 8 • The Samuel Louis Sugarman Award • The Britannica Online Premium • The Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online • Travel expenses for Atutis and one guardian The Regional Office of Education 8 has sponsored the regional spelling bee for 40 years. The competition encourages students to set goals and dedicate time to study and prepare. Participation also provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in public speaking and performing under pressure.

The conference was geared toward freshmen and sophomore agriculture students/FFA members. There were six breakout sessions spread over the two-day conference. The sessions were Building Connections, My Roots, Opportunities in FFA, Goal Setting, Defining Success and Our Brand of Leadership.

West Carroll FFA members compete for awards Eight West Carroll FFA members competed at the Section I FFA Proficiency Awards on Feb. 21 at Pearl City High School. Tom Falk and Taylor Schmoll won their areas of Ag Sales and Vet Science, respectively, and advanced to the District I FFA Proficiency Awards on March 9 at Geneseo High School. Also competing from the West Carroll FFA were Adrianna Barragan, Vegetable Production Placement; Brayden Reagan, Wildlife Management; Max Eaton, Ag Services; Nathan Veith, Dairy Production Placement;

Chloe Neis, Food Service; and Faith Hovious, Goat Production. To compete in a proficiency award area, a member must have kept at least one full year of FFA SAE records, type up a proficiency award application and interview in front of a panel of judges. The records account for 80% of the total score and the live interview the other 20%. Special thanks to Brandt Hutchcraft for volunteering to help judge for the West Carroll FFA chapter this year. Council considers hike in fees for gaming terminals By MICHAEL MILLER For Shaw Media

SAVANNA – The Savanna City Council is considering affixing a license fee for establishments that have gaming terminals. Mayor Chris Lain said Feb. 22 that the current law allows for a maximum annual fee of $250 per machine within the city. The previous license fee amount had been limited to $25. In the past 12 months, the mayor said, revenue from gaming machines in Savanna totaled $2,781,883. He said the city would gain $16,500 from the 66 machines in use in 13 locations throughout the city. Lain said the city has been in need of a part-time employee in the administrative department and this amount could facilitate the hiring of such an employee. Several members favored enacting the license at the $250 amount, while others favored starting out with a smaller amount and gradually phasing

in higher amounts up to $250. Alderman Jeff Griswold said he felt the gradual increase would help ease the potential impact upon the businesses involved, while Alderman Pat Sanchez said he favored the $250 increase because he felt the phase-in model would produce an undue impact upon the existing administrative staff. Lain said he agreed that phasing in might be the best way to go and commented that he thought they should initially go with at least $150. The council voted to send the matter back to the ordinance committee to gather more information and also to allow the public to be informed and voice opinions. The matter will be taken up again and possibly voted on at the next regular meeting of the council March 8. That meeting will mark the first “in person” meeting of the council in several months. The council had been relegated to Zoom meetings only during the latest COVID-19 wave.

treynolds@shawmedia.com LANARK – The Class 1A Eastland Regional semifinal between Newman and Eastland on Feb. 23 had everything a fan could want: two strong teams trading punches, two star players making big plays and eight ties and 10 lead changes. It even went to overtime. After Ayden Batten banked in an 18-foot jumper from the top of the key to force overtime, Marcus Williams split a pair of free throws to snap a tie in the final six seconds of overtime, and Newman pulled out a 58-57 win Wednesday night in Lanark. “It was a great game. Both teams battled really hard,” Newman coach Ray Sharp said. “I just felt that we executed some stuff late. We got the shot and got lucky to bank one in at the end [of regulation]. I just felt we had some luck on our side tonight, and that was the biggest difference in a 1-point game between two really good teams.” The final five minutes alone were worth the price of admission. seconds remaining. “I never feel like we’re going to lose with Kellen Henze with the ball at the end of the game; he made an incredible play, even though all five guys are trying to stop him,” Eastland coach Tyler Zumdahl said. “It’s been incredible all

year to watch him; nobody’s been able to stop him, even though everybody knows who he is.” Henze wasn’t done yet, but more on that in a minute. With 1.8 seconds on the clock, the Comets (23-9) came out of a timeout and threw a pass from their baseline into the front court, where Lucas Simpson leaped to catch it, then flipped a quick pass to Batten, who took one dribble and hoisted a shot just inside the 3-point line from the top of the key. It hit the backboard dead center and banked in, kicking off a wild celebration from the Newman bench, who thought he had just won the game with a 3. “I did not call bank,” Batten said with a grin. “I did think it was a 3 at first, and then I thought it was a foul, too, because everyone was coming out to mob me and I thought I had a chance to win it at the line. I got a bunch of water dumped on me, thought I hit the game-winner, but almost.” “They just made a good play. We talked about trying to keep the ball in front of us. We had fouls to give, so we

Henze was the star of the show, though. The Eastland senior had a double-double in the game’s first 11 minutes, and finished with 32 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists and two steals. “He’s such a great player, and we just could not stop him – and when we did get them to miss their first shot, he’d get the rebound and put it back in,” Sharp said. “He’s just a tremendous player. Steamers sophomore Baylen Damhoff hit a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation to tie the game 54-54 and send it into an extra period, and senior Brock Mason then hit a hanger from the baseline for a 56-54 lead just 24 seconds into overtime. But Aquin senior Dom Alber nailed a deep 3 from the left wing to give the Bulldogs (17-13) a 57-56 lead with 1:33 remaining, and classmate Ollie Arndt scored inside off a pass from Jack Hiveley with 26 seconds left to make it a three-point Aquin lead. The Steamers (29-4) had another chance to tie. Damhoff and Ian Wiebenga both had 3-point attempts on the next Fulton possession, but their shots rimmed out, and Aquin grabbed the rebound. “At the end, we got down a little bit and Baylen hit a huge, monster shot for us, then we came out and got a
