Savanna couple charged in March 9 murder Man faces multiple murder charges; girlfriend charged with concealing homicide and obstructing justice BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com Bond has been increased to $2 million for a Savanna man accused of beating his girlfriend’s husband to death with his bare hands before investigators say he and she dumped his body in the Mississippi River. Levi “T.J.” Meyers, 35, is charged in JoDaviess Circuit Court with five counts of first-degree murder, concealment of a homicidal death and aggravated battery in the death of Keith A. Heidenreich Jr., whose body was found March 10 at Miller’s Boat Landing, about 4 miles north of Savanna at the northern entrance to Mississippi Palisades State Park. If convicted of murder, Meyers would be sentenced to 20 to 60 years without parole. He was appointed a public defender; he has a preliminary hearing April 21 via Zoom. Initial reports had his last name as Meyer, and said he is from Freeport, but Meyers has a Savanna address, according to charging documents. Investigators say he was living in Hanover with Danielle Heidenreich, 39, who also has a Savanna address, court papers show, and that their residence is where Keith Heidenreich was killed. She is charged with concealment of a homicidal
Levi “T.J.” Meyers and Danielle K. Heidenreich death, punishable by 2 to 5 years, and obstructing justice, which carries 1 to 3 years. She is being held on $250,000 bond. She also was appointed a public defender and has a preliminary hearing April 21 via Zoom. Meyers can be convicted of only one of the five murder charges; the state’s attorney files multiple charges to give a jury a variety of elements of consider when determining a verdict.

Event is scheduled to run Aug. 17 through 21 MORRISON – Organizers of the Whiteside County Fair are working to prepare for the 150th fair while keeping an eye on the COVID-19 pandemic. “An impressive lineup of entertainment is on tap at this year’s fair and is sure to please all who attend,” Todd Mickley, Whiteside County Fair publicity and advertising, said in an April 6 news release. The fair is slated to open Tuesday, Aug. 17, and conclude Saturday, Aug. 21. “The 150th annual fair, held at the fairgrounds in Morrison, will include an outstanding carnival, amazing food, games, livestock, harness racing, a large variety of exhibits, a lineup of evening entertainment that is sure to please and much, much more,” Mickley said. “It was a difficult decision to cancel last year’s fair due to the COVID-19
restrictions and we are excited for the fair to return in 2021.” Mickley said fair officials will continue to monitor COVID-19 concerns in the coming months and will adhere to state guidelines and regulations to assist in maintaining the safety of all who attend. “Be on the lookout for future press releases or visit our Facebook page as we begin to release the sensational entertainment lineup for the 150th fair,” Mickley said. “We greatly appreciate you supporting the Whiteside County Fair and look forward to everyone joining the festivities in celebrating 150 years of heritage, community, family and fun. Husband and wife killed in rollover near Fulton FULTON – Two Morrison people were killed in an April 9 rollover on U.S. Route 136 just west of Sand Road. According to Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker, a black SUV, driven by Stephen E. Higdon, 71, was eastbound when it left the road-
way, traveled through the southbound ditch and rolled, ejecting Higdon and his wife Catherine, 70. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. The Higdons had lived in Fairfield Iowa, prior to moving to Morrison. Booker said Stephen Higdon was a minister in
Fairfield Iowa for many years. Deputies were assisted at the accident scene by Fulton and Albany Police, the Illinois State Police, and Fulton Fire and Ambulance. The traffic crash remains under investigation by the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office.

MORRISON – A Deer Grove man charged with misdemeanor DUI in an Oct. 21, 2020, head-on crash that killed the president of Astec Mobile Screens in Sterling now is facing more serious felony charges. The misdemeanor case against Alan E. Thompson, 49, was dismissed March 4 on a motion from the state that indicated the case was under review. A citation for improper lane usage also was dropped. Thompson now is charged with aggravated DUI, which carries 3 to 7 years in prison, as well as misdemeanor
DUI drugs and/or alcohol, improper lane usage, and failure to reduce speed. He is free after posting $7,500 of his $75,000 bond, and has a hearing April 26. According to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department, Thompson was northbound on state Route 40 at Green River Bridge north of Osage Road around 5:30 p.m. when he crossed the center line and struck the southbound vehicle being driven by Timothy D. Gonigam, 58,

SAVANNA – The Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main St., will have a showcase of arts, crafts, talents, and skills called “Creativity on the Move” from April 16 to 18. This free event will exhibit the works of many local artists and artisans, some of whom will demonstrate their skills. e have officially announced our 2021-2022 Carroll County Farm Bureau Foundation Scholarship Award winners. I will be announcing the winners here over the next couple weeks. Each recipient received a $1000 scholarship. Four of the general winners are listed below. • Nikki Ebersole, daughter of Sheldon and Julie Ebersole of Sterling. Nikki will be graduating from Milledgeville High School in May. During high school she was active in FFA where she was president for two years. She was also active in 4-H. Nikki will be attending Sauk Valley Community College studying Agribusiness. • Alyssa Miller, daughter of Lyle and Codee Miller of Lanark. Alyssa will be graduating from Eastland High school in May. During high school she was active in FFA where she was the secretary and vice president. She was the captain of the Eastland girls basketball team. She was also active in 4-H. The traveling trophy, awarded to the winner of football games between the Steamers and the Morrison Mustangs, won’t be played for in the near future due to the Steamers moving to the NUIC next year. April 9’s 56-0 Steamers shutout at E.M. “Bud” Cole Field assured bragging rights to the trophy – a real wood shoe fastened to the bottom of a plaque base – until whenever an opportunity arises that the two schools play each other again. Fulton (3-0) will hold on to it for a long time, but it didn’t take very long for the Steamers to have complete command of the game. Kyler Pessman ran back the opening kickoff more than 90 yards to put the Steamers up 7-0, and when the Mustangs returned the ensuing kickoff, it wound up being a disaster for them. The Mustangs (1-3) fumbled the ball and it landed within Zach Dykstra’s reach to give the

Dykstra called it a bit of luck, but it was his quick actions that kept the Steamers’ momentum sailing. “I saw one of my guys right in
front of me, and Morrison all around me,” Dykstra said. “All of a sudden I see this ball pop up above everybody and it falls down, one guy went for it and missed it, and I just jumped on it, hoping I could have it. I don’t
know how, but I somehow got it and I was hanging on for dear life.” Ethan Rash covered those 20 yards on the next play, running in for a 14-0 lead. The pair of blows took just 28 seconds. Pessman later added a touchdown reception and a rushing TD as he scored three different ways. “The kickoff return was big-time,” Pessman said. “We wanted to get off to a fast start, and that kickoff return was so important because it really boosted our confidence. From then on, when we scored [next], we just had so much confidence in ourselves and got the job done.” Pessman’s rushing score and a Jacob Jones TD reception put the Steamers up 28-0 after one quarter; Fulton had outgained Morrison 120-3 at that point, and also had two potential touchdowns called back due to penalties. “They got us from the kickoff,” Mustangs quarterback Nathan Helms said. “They ran it back, got the momentum, and they played really well, they played aggressive,

It sucked losing the Wooden Shoe, so this year we came in here really motivated from losing last year, and we got off to that fast start and went from there.” Morrison managed only 37 total yards, and was stopped in the backfield nine times. Helms was picked off twice. “All we can do is go into practice next week and just forget everything
that happened,” Helms said. The trophy was created years after the Lincoln Highway rivals played their first game. According to a written history by former Mustangs coach and athletic director Gus Linke, “The purpose was to provide motivation to the intense football rivalry and lend a sportsmanship flavor to the strong Dutch heritage of both communities.” The two schools played their first football game in 1901, but the series was played intermittently until 1946. The shoe, which came from Morrison High custodian Ralph Keiser, was first fought for in 1977. Morrison leads the series 56-29-5; that record includes playoff games. With both schools being in Class 1A for the foreseeable future, the chances of the Mustangs and Steamers playing again aren’t entirely gone. “They shut us out last year, and our seniors and our juniors knew that, ever since we were in second grade, knew that this was going to be our golden year,” Rash said. “Now that our season’s cut short, it sucks because we wanted to have a shot to take it all the way, but it feels really good to get revenge on Morrison.”
