SAVANNA — VFW Post 2223 presented the Carroll County Sheriff’s office with a donation of $15,000 for a new K-9 team. “It will cover the cost of the K-9 as well as training for both the K-9 and deputy,” the sheriff’s department said in a Facebook post. “Training will take place in mid February and you will see the new K-9 team on patrol in the Spring.” Any additional funds received will be used for necessary equipment for the team as well as any future K-9 related expenses, the department said.

Husband said Nov. 24, at the council’s Zoom meeting that he had decided to seek reelection. He said he encouraged someone from his ward to step up and fill the role. In other action, the council briefly reviews an update by MSA Engineering regarding the Wacker Road project. That update included the following items. Soil testing was completed by subcontractor Conin Inc and determined that some of the top soil at the site lacked nutrients. The report said that they plan to inter seed and add additional fertilizer most likely in the Spring. The council also approved the annual tax levy ordinance and annual revised budget ordinance, on first reading only.

One COVID-related death in Whiteside BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com The Whiteside County Health Department announced an additional COVID-related death on Sunday, this one involving a person in his or her 90s. There also were 23 new cases involving three people younger that 20, two in their 20s, one in their 30s, two in their 40s, six in their 50s, five in their 60s, three in their 70s and one older than 80. Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics Sunday. Whiteside County has had 3,905 cases and 80 deaths. Lee County has had 1,844 cases, 1,027 recoveries and 18 deaths. Ogle County has had 2,685 cases, 2,009 recoveries and 29 deaths. Carroll County has had 1,057 cases, 944 recoveries and 24 deaths. The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has had no consecutive days under the 12% threshold needed to return to Tier 2 mitigations. MORRISON – The fundraising efforts of the recent Friends of Odell Public Library were far exceeded. The goal was to raise $2,650 to benefit the library in the purchase of new books, and the final total was $5,494.53. The monies will be divided between young adult books, juvenile books, classic movie CDs for kids, and large print books. There will be a new timely, monthly column featuring various aspects of the library. The first column will appear the first part of December,

library board. She will review several of her favorites and others that are found on library shelves for children. Virtual storytime is 7 p.m. every Wednesday night. The Memorial Garden is designed to honor those whom have passed and also to celebrate those whom have recovered, and to thank dedicated staff. The garden highlights pictures of residents that have passed with an angel looking over them. Many of Resthave’s staff wrote messages on candles and it is just beautiful when it is lit up at night.

Pearl City Elevator offering scholarships $500 for ag students PEARL CITY – Pearl City Elevator, Inc. is sponsoring two $500 scholarships. The company has been sponsoring the ‘Agriculture First’ scholarship program, which has been created to improve and support the agricultural industry, for over 15 years. Pearl City Elevator, Inc. will award up to three $500 scholarships to qualifying students furthering their education in an agricultural field. Any high school senior graduat-

ing in 2021, pursuing a two or fouryear degree in livestock production, crop production, or closely related agricultural field is eligible. Free COVID-19 tests will be offered in Freeport FREEPORT – The State of Illinois, through the Stephenson County Health Department, is sponsoring a community test site for the COVID-19 virus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5 in parking lot C at Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Road. Participants are asked to use the Pearl City Road entrance. Anyone can get tested at no cost, even if they do not have symptoms. Arizona inmate killed in fight at Thomson prison BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com THOMSON – A 37-year-old Thomson prison inmate from Arizona died Nov. 27 after a fight, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in a news release. According to the release, 37-yearold Edsel Aaron Badoni, who was serving nearly 14 years for assault with a deadly weapon, assault resulting in serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm during a violent crime, died around 2:30 p.m. after an altercation with another inmate. The other inmate, who was not identified, was treated at the prison

for unspecified injuries, the release said. The FBI is investigating and no staff or other inmates were injured, the release said. No further details were provided. Badoni, of Blue Gap, Arizona, was sentenced Feb. 13, 2018, to 166 months; he was sent to Thomson on Nov. 25, 2019. According to published reports, Badoni, who had a history of discharging a firearm in the victim’s neighborhood, shot the man in the chest when he approached him and asked him to stop. There are 1,366 male inmates at the facility.

AUSTIN ASSEN FRITZ LANARK – Austin Assen Fritz, 20, a thoughtful, loving, polite son, died Friday, November 20, 2020 at home. A private family funeral Mass was held at SS. Austin was born Feb. 17, 2000 in Targovishte, Bulgaria, and was welcomed into his new family by Stanley and Linda (Ritchie) Fritz in May 2002. He graduated from Eastland High School in 2018. Austin was an accomplished dancer, and an exceptional cook with new recipes in the kitchen. He had a great love and talent for music. He especially loved Celtic Woman songs and knew them all by heart. R. DEAN LOWER LANARK – R. Dean Lower, 89, of Lanark, passed away November 22, 2020 at Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Remembered as a “forever farmer,” Dean grew corn, soybeans and raised livestock on land that has been in the family for six generations and more than 150 years. The only child of Joe and Ruth (Eckerle) Lower, Dean was an honors student and graduate of Lanark High School. He married Barbara Isenberger on Feb. 24, 1951. The couple had six children. Barbara died Dec. 12, 1998. Dean married Connie on Dec. 23, 1999 and welcomed her three daughters and families into his clan. Dean loved and was proud of his entire family. He was a well-known collector of antiques and insisted on having the largest tree the house could hold at Christmas, his favorite holiday. He could often be found in his woodworking shop creating gifts and heirlooms.

Dean was fun loving, had a zest for life, and was always on the move. He was curious and enjoyed discovering better ways to do things. He was a good friend and a “father figure” to many outside the family. Dean is survived by his wife, Connie, of Lanark; children, Denise Myers (Tom) of Rockford; Chris (Mindy) of Lanark; Mark (Cherie) of Lanark; Marti Palmer (Rich) of Naperville; Laura Morey (Stephen) of Peoria; Sarah Bates (Ernie) of Lanark; stepdaughters Meri Boyer (Jeff) of Overland Park, Kansas, Lori (Tom) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Keri Heeren (Kevin) of Lanark; and 27 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Dean was a long time and active member of the Lanark United Methodist Church. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family funeral will be held at the church on Saturday, Dec. 5. JOHN B. ROE GRAND DETOUR, Illinois — John B. Roe, known as Jack, of Grand Detour, Illinois and Holmes Beach, Florida, died November 27, 2020, at the age of 78 from a very rare untreatable form of cancer known as Myelofibrosis. He enjoyed horse racing, golf, reading and traveling. He attended Oregon, Illinois schools and graduated from Centre College of Kentucky in 1964. He attended American University, George Washington University, with political honors and the University of Illinois Law School 1967. He was elected Ogle County State’s Attorney in 1968 and was the youngest state’s attorney in Illinois history. He taught Criminal Justice at Sauk Valley and Kishwaukee Colleges for 5 years. He was admitted to practice in the United State’s Supreme Court in 1969. He served two terms in the Illinois Senate 1973-1979. While in the Senate

he sponsored the Illinois Campaign Disclosure Act requiring candidates for public office to disclose their contributors and their expenditures. He sponsored Governor Thompson’s Class X anti crime bills providing for mandatory sentences for crimes of violence such as murder, armed robbery, rape etc. He sponsored the Horse Racing Act of 1976 completely revising the administration of horse racing in Illinois and the No Fault Divorce Act. He also obtained the money necessary to construct the Rochelle, Illinois overpass. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Illinois Court of Claims by Governor Jim Thompson in 1979. He was a member of the Rochelle Grade School Board Dist. 230 from 198284. He practiced law in Rochelle from 1973-1995; first as JOHN B. ROE; then as ROE & MALLON; then ROE, MALLON & TESS. He was appointed Circuit Judge in 1995 by Illinois Supreme Court and was elected Circuit Judge in 1996. After retiring as a judge in 2000, he was a member Governor’s Commission to Revise and Rewrite The Illinois Criminal Code; a member of The Board of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Springfield, Illinois; served as faculty at Stetson University College of Law, St. Petersburg, Florida, Adjunct Professor; was a Certified Florida County, Circuit and Family Mediator; was a Certified Mediator U.S. District Court Middle District of Florida and U.S. District Court Northern District of Illinois; was a Florida Bar Association Arbitrator and Mediator; was Certified Mediator and Arbitrator 12th Circuit, Florida and 15th Circuit, Illinois; was a Manatee County Florida Administration Hearing Officer; and was an arbitrator for New York and Nasdaq Stock Exchanges. The Roe family has lived in Ogle County since 1837, his great grandfather John B. Roe was the first Doctor of Ogle County. She was a devout Christian, steadfast in her faith throughout her lifetime. She enjoyed playing the piano, baking, and gardening. Dorothy was a talented oil landscape artist and exceptional seamstress. She also appreciated the beauty of nature through flowers and birds. Despite her prolonged battle with multiple sclerosis, which exceeded 30 years, Dorothy lived consistently in grace and peace. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold Newendyke; sister, Joyce Newendyke; former husband, Edgar Walvoord. She is survived by her children, Michael (Sandra) Walvoord, Katy, Texas, Barry (Elizabeth) Walvoord, Lake Forest, and Cindy Lett (Harold), Smithville, Missouri; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Marian (William) Reiling, Lena, and Carol June (Ernest) Eads, Fulton; brothers, Vernon (Mary Alice) Newendyke, Lanark, and Melvin (Barbara) Newendyke, Litchfield; and several nieces and nephews. Why getting a good night’s sleep is so good for you A t a wellness conference a couple of years ago, I attended a session on sleep, and it was one of the most impactful messages I heard and remember to this day. Since we’re just a few weeks past moving our clocks back an hour, I hope it’s not too late for you to consider using that “extra” hour to focus on getting more sleep. The presenter at the conference was Dr. Param Dedhia, formerly of Johns Hopkins and now director of sleep medicine at the Canyon Ranch Wellness Center in Tucson, Arizona. Dedhia went into great detail about what happens in our brain and body during the various stages of sleep and how important it is for us to get 7 to 9 hours of good, quality sleep each night.

According to Dedhia, during the first few hours of sleep, when your sleep is deepest, your body is focused on physical repair. Growth hormones and proteins are released to repair and regenerate muscles. Inflammation is reduced and the lymphatic systems clears damaging substances. This is also when your brain transfers memory from short term storage to long term storage. During the latter hours of sleep is when you experience dreaming. Dream sleep rules your emotions

and this is when your brain clears negative thoughts like fear and anxiety. This may also be the time when creativity and problem-solving are enhanced. Getting enough of both deep and dream sleep keeps us feeling great physically, mentally, and emotionally. If you have trouble sleeping enough, or don’t get good quality sleep the first thing you might try it to improve your “sleep hygiene”. Good sleep habits include: • Going to bed at the same time each night, and getting up at the same time each morning. • Making sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature. • Removing electronic devices (television, phone, computer) from

the bedroom. •Avoiding large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime • Being physically active during the day. If none of these seem to help, it may be worthwhile to visit with your doctor and see if a sleep study is in order. I’ve heard people say jokingly that they can sleep when they’re dead. According to Dedhia, sleep deprivation will kill you sooner that food deprivation. For that reason, it might be more important than you think to focus on your sleep.
