Hundreds remember longtime Rock Falls firefighter Bill Milby ‘cared about life’ and’ ‘loved being a fireman’ BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@saukvalley.com ROCK FALLS – Emergency responders sobbed, grown men held onto each other, and others reflected on treasured memories last Thursday as they mourned longtime Rock Falls firefighter Bill Milby at a public park. Milby, 60, died Aug. 27 from complications of renal cancer. “He loved being a fireman,” said RFFD firefighter, chaplain and Rev. Brian Tribley. “He dedicated years of his life to this city, and we’ll never know how many lives he’s truly touched or saved through medical calls, accident scenes and fires involving smoking structures.” A former Twin City Joint Fire Command Deputy Fire Chief, Milby retired from the Rock Falls Fire Department on Sept. 30, 2018, after serving 33 years. He had been an active Whiteside County Board member since 2006, heading its Judiciary and Wage and Salary committees. Hundreds of Milby’s colleagues, community and family members, local first responders and city and county personnel attended his funeral at RB&W Park. The ceremony, touched by the coronavirus through masks and social distancing, featured bagpipes and a procession of emergency response vehicles from the Rock Falls and Sterling fire and police departments. Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue on has designated three counties in Illinois as contiguous natural disaster areas. The declaration, made Sept. 3, includes Carroll, Rock Island and Whiteside counties. It was made in response to damage and losses suffered as a result of the Aug. 10 derecho. “The extent of damage to crops, equipment, facilities and the ag

STAFF REPORT FULTON — For the second time in two days, the Whiteside County Health Department has issued an alert about a potential COVID-19 exposure involving a bar —this time in Fulton. The Whiteside County Health Department is working with Denny O’s in Fulton after an asymptomatic individual who was later determined positive, visited the main bar during their infectious period, health officials said in a Sunday news release. “After working with the location to review the situation we have decided to issue a general release. This is due to the extended potential for exposure, typical visit duration and difficulty identifying all close contacts. We are working with Denny O’s to review plans and ensure a safe environment and appreciate their

Erie woman dies in crash OBITUARIES JOHN EDWARD BOELKENS MOUNT CARROLL — John Edward Boelkens, 78, a longtime resident of Mt. Carroll, passed away at home Saturday, August 29, 2020. John was born June 17, 1942 in Elgin, the son of John and Jacoba (Schol) Boelkens. When John was young, his family moved to Huntley and later near Mt. Carroll, farming north of town. He graduated with the Mt. Carroll High School Class of 1960. Living in different communities, John met the love of his life, Mary Jane Hartman while in high school.

ERIE – One person is dead and another injured after a Sunday night crash in rural Erie. Joyce M. Kaecker, 76, of Erie died after her vehicle was struck by Nathan D. Bearsley, 35, of Erie around 6:45 p.m.

Bearsley was driving south on Albany Road near Burns Road, about 3 miles north of Erie, when he crossed the center line into the path of Kaecker’s vehicle, according to the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office. Joyce was pronounced dead at the

scene by Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald. Bearsley was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He was cited for improper lane usage and the crash remains under investigation.

They went to each other’s proms and after four years of dating they tied the knot on June 13, 1964 at the Mt. Carroll Church of God. They raised two children and celebrated 56 years of marriage together. Sightseeing was one of their favorite pastimes and gave John a great reason to practice photography. They could also be seen enjoying their four grandchildren’s full range of events in Ohio giving John another reason to use his camera. John worked thirty-five years for General Electric in Morrison, retiring in 2000. John was an active member of the Mt. Carroll community and was a past City Alderman along with being a member of the Community Development Corporation.

He loved to volunteer wherever he could, including with the Savanna Food Pantry Board. He was a member of the Mt. Carroll Church of God, where he was a former Trustee. He loved to help with Church mission work in Haiti and the Southwest. John will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary of Mt. Carroll; a son, Edward C (Diane) Boelkens of Millbury, Ohio; a daughter, Christine S (Glenn) Hoehne of Ottawa, Ohio; four grandchildren Lindsay Boelkens, Jacob Boelkens, Gage Hoehne, and Hanna Hoehne, two brothers-in-law, Donald Dyke of Janesville, Wisconsin and Lloyd (Colleen) Hartman of Tucson, Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Ralph) Geesey and Elizabeth Hartman, both of Mt. Carroll; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Thelma Dyke and

Gladys Boelkens; a brother and sisterin-law, Wesley (Sheila) Boelkens; and a Father and Mother-in-law, Harold (Zella) Hartman. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Mt. Carroll Church of God. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Church. Masks are required. Memorials may be made to Church of God Missions in John’s honor. HARRY L. WENGER TUCSON, Arizona – Harry Leslie Wenger died on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at age 87, surrounded by his loved ones in his home in Tucson, Arizona. Harry was born on Sept. 20, 1932 in Milledgeville to Ida and Bruce Wenger. Harry grew up in Milledgeville and was the youngest of 5 children, Harlan, Emerson, Lila, and Eileen. Harry’s parents had little money to spare, but supported him being the first in his family to attend college at Cornell College in Iowa. He married his true love from high school, Gale Francis Nicholson on Aug. 24, 1952, in Coleta. After spending two years in the service stationed in Germany, Harry and Gale settled in Elgin, and had four chil-

Harry was generous, had a mischievous sense of humor, and possessed the ability to view the world in a realistic way; yet it did not keep him from valuing its beauty and wonder. He loved music and tried his hand at the guitar and piano ,and made his own “best of” CDs for popular, classical and opera music. He worked hard to eventually become an owner of a small business, often noting that his success was based on “hiring good people, a good memory, and a little luck.” He took an opportunity to retire early to Tucson, Arizona so he could travel with his wife and to pursue his lifelong passion for nature and landscape photography. When he was not involved with his photography, he and Gale made sure to spend each summer in the Midwest pulling their trailer along and parking it at each of their children’s homes. Golfers get reinforcements from football team Morrison football players move to links from gridiron for 2020 season BY ERIC INGLES Shaw Media The Mustangs boys golf team brings back some experience this fall. Five of the six Mustangs who teed it up in the regional last October at Lake Carroll will be in a Morrison shirt again, with Mason Dykstra, Isaac Melton, David Stralow, Dayton Young and Adam Tichler bringing in that experience. “It’s looking pretty sharp so far,” Dykstra said. “We’re putting in a lot of work during and after practice, taking it into our own hands.” Dykstra, Melton and Stralow were on the varsity roster as freshmen in 2018, so as juniors this fall, they are entering their third year as Mustang varsity players. “They have the experience and, more than anything else, they’ve watched and seen what good golf shots look like,” Morrison coach Justin Stevenson said. “It’s really just picking a specific thing we can work on with each of them. We know their games, so what can we work on to improve?” Morrison also has some reinforcements, in the form of several football players who have chosen life on the links this fall over sitting on the couch waiting for the COVID-delayed start of football season in the spring. Danny Mouw has been playing golf with family members most of his life, so the chance to do so while representing Morrison was one he couldn’t pass up. “I’ve learned how far I can hit certain clubs,” Mouw said. “[I want to work on] my drives. I tend to slice the ball a lot.” Beau Brackemeyer is a lineman for Morrison most falls. This fall, he is on the golf course. “I’ve always liked golf, playing in my free time, and I thought what better chance to go out and get some fine-tuning and stuff to my game since football is delayed,” he said. In a normal fall, Nathan Helms would be taking snaps for the Mustangs football team. This year he has gone from being an adept signal-caller for one of the better teams in the Three Rivers to breaking out a golf game that,

The trio of football players will be playing golf for the Mustangs for this season. he admits, struggles at times. He already sees improvements in his short game, though. “That’s what I’ve struggled with since I’ve played golf, and practicing every day has made it a lot easier,” Helms said. He’s on a fall baseball team as well as suiting up for the Mustangs on the golf course, but there was zero chance that Helms was going to spend the fall on his couch. “I haven’t played a competitive sport since last fall, and I definitely missed it,” he said. “When we finally got to practice [football] a little bit before it all got shut down, it was nice to get out and get to do something. When the opportunity presented itself, I decided I was going to play [golf] to do something.” Brackemeyer did think a bit about sitting back and relaxing this fall. “I’m so used to doing sports and work and everything like that where I figured I might as well come out,” he said. “Get along with some new people I haven’t really talked to that much.” A lot of the veterans have been helpful with ways to improve his game, and he has seen it improve, he said. “A lot of them have played golf or known of golf before, so it’s not like we’re teaching them the basics,” Dykstra said. “It’s just fine-tuning and fixing up parts of their game here and there.”

One of the big things that needed fine-tuning, Stevenson found, was the short game. To help boost the play around the greens, Stevenson had his players out at Kiwanis Park in Morrison chipping at targets and nets. The 2020 season is a very different beast, as teams have to worry about safety protocols in the midst of a pandemic, and the schedules look somewhat different, with smaller tournaments on the weekends and no nonconference opponents from out of the region. To add to the degree of difficulty,

the guidelines have changed a couple of times since golf got the green light to proceed with its season. “Our athletic director, Gregg Dolan, does an unbelievable job of keeping me up to date on how quickly things change,” Stevenson said. “We’ve never played golf with masks on, so that’s new. Obviously, with the heat we’ve had, making sure the guys stay hydrated. We’re doing everything we’re supposed to do. We take temperatures when they show up to practice. We take temperatures when they show up to school.”

COVID-19 cancels youth soccer, football in Morrison BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com MORRISON — Options for youth sports in Morrison got a little bit smaller this past week. Kids who were planning to participate in soccer and flag football this fall will be unable to do so, as those were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. The latest Illinois guidelines for youth sports in Phase 4 deemed soccer and flag football as medium risk activities. Safety concerns and a likely dip in participation were the main reasons cited for postponement at a meeting on Aug. 25 with Katie Selburg, Parks and Recreation Coordinator for the city of Morrison, mayor Everett Pannier, and the Morrison city council. The Prophetstown Park District had postponed its fall youth sports activities the week before, while the Sterling Park District had done so in early August. Selburg noted other entities used as a benchmark in the decision-making process were Morrison Junior Tackle, the Morrison School District, the IHSA and the IESA. “Seeing other communities and organizations take this action let us know this was the right thing to do,” Selburg said. “We needed to fall in line.” In 2019, there were 87 participants in soccer

Even though activities have been cancelled this fall because of the pandemic, maintenance at the facility continues. (pre-K through 5th grade) and 71 participants in flag football (1st through 5th grade). Soccer nets will remain up at the Morrison Sports Complex, for those who wish to use them on their own. Yet to be determined will be the fate of winter

activities in Morrison. Boys and girls basketball (1st through 5th grade), table tennis (6th grade through adult) and co-ed volleyball (adult) are usually offered, but school facilities are used to host those activities and will need the schools’ approval.

STAFF REPORT news@saukvalley.com LANARK – A Lanark resident is a finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Awards. Delana Erbsen of Lanark was selected as one of four national finalists to compete in the area of Agri Science Integrated Systems, the National FFA Organization said Sept. 1. Erbsen is one of four people chosen from around the country to compete for the award at the National FFA Convention. Proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness, agriscience and production agriculture gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. The Agri Science-Integrated Systems award is one of 47 proficiency program areas FFA members can participate in to develop valuable experience and leadership skills at the local, state and national levels. Erbsen, a junior in the Eastland

Science Fair along with her research partner, Alyssa Miller. Erbsen is supported in her research by Furst-McNess Co. in Freeport. She is the daughter of Kevin and Wendy Ersben of Lanark.

Sterling Newman takes Rocket Invite title BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com ROCK FALLS -- Newman had two of the top four golfers at Rock River Golf and Pool on Sept. 5 to take first place at the 20th annual Rocket Invitational. The Comets shot a 328 as a team, beating Dakota by 14 strokes and Sycamore by 20. Kyle Wolfe’s 78 powered the Comets, led by his strong short game, with a chip jump-starting his game early and a putter that was on fire on the back nine. “I chipped and putted extremely well, and that helped me out a lot,” he said. “It started on the first hole. I was just short off the green on No. 1 and chipped in about a 35-footer, and that really got me going.” Newman also got an 80 from Logan Palmer and an 82 from Blake Wolfe. “Obviously it’s not what I wanted,” Blake Wolfe said. “I feel like if I had gotten a couple of breaks here or there it could have been 79 or 78. I had a couple of unfortunate kicks, but 82 is nothing to be too mad about. Hope to capitalize on that
