Pannier won’t seek third term as Morrison mayor Four aldermen up for election are running unopposed BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com MORRISON – Mayor Everett Pannier will not seek a third term this spring, he confirmed Tuesday. Pannier, 77, said in an interview that his choice to walk away from the office was personal. “It’s just time,” Pannier said. “Eight years is long enough, and with my age and health and everything, I thought it was probably per-

tinent to not re-run.” Pannier was first elected in 2013, and was re-elected in 2017. Mayors serve 4-year terms and run without a political party affiliation. He won’t completely abandon his involvement with city government: He plans to stay in touch with how the city moves forward, but from a distance, Pannier said. “My intent is that when a new regime takes over, they take over – but I’ll be watching what happens with the redo of five blocks of Main Street.” According to petitions to run in the April 6 consolidated election filed in the last week, city residents will have a choice between two candidates for mayor: acting City Clerk Scott Vandermyde and current

Ward 3 Alderman Vernon Tervelt. Vandermyde, 57, a retired insurance executive, has been the acting city clerk since mid-July. Tervelt, 77, a retired manager and Everett Pannier sales representative, first was elected to represent the 3rd Ward in 2015. He ran unopposed in 2019, and was re-elected to a second term. Tervelt’s term is slated to expire in 2023, meaning that were he to be elected mayor, he could appoint, and the council could approve, someone to fill his spot as alderman. The petitions to run further show that every current alderman intends

to run for re-election, unopposed. Two alderman from each of the city’s four wards are elected to 4-year terms, except when the term is 2 years. In Ward 2, Alderman Harvey Zuidema is running seeking a fourth 4-year term. In Ward 3, Alderman Josh West is running seeking re-election to a 4-year term. In Ward 4, Alderman Kevin Bruckner Jr. is running seeking the 4-year term, while Alderman Arlyn Deets is running seeking the unexpired 2-year term. Deets won the 4-year term in 2017, after being elected to the 2-year term in 2015. Bruckner secured the 2-year term in 2019.

Eight attorneys apply to fill associate judge vacancy BY TIMOTHY EGGERT teggert@shawmedia.com MOUNT CARROLL – The county’s top prosecutor and top defender, along with six other attorneys, have applied to fill the vacancy created by 15th Judicial Circuit Associate Judge John “Jerry” Kane’s advance to resident circuit judge. Kane, a Republican, was elected to the Carroll County circuit judge spot in November, defeating Democratic candidate and Lanark attorney Betsy Shaulis. Kane’s resignation as associate judge was effective Dec. 7. His replacement will be determined by a vote of the eight circuit judges in the 15th Judicial Circuit, after they have interviewed applicants for the position. They include: Scott J. Brinkmeier, 52, of Mount Carroll, who has served as the Carroll County state’s attorney since

2000. Voters re-elected him to a sixth term in November. Before becoming Carroll County’s top prosecutor, Brinkmeier worked for 7 years as an assistant state’s attorney in Whiteside County. During his two decades as state’s attorney, Brinkmeier has contributed to the formation of the Carroll County Juvenile Justice Council, to obtain funding for a part-time Victim’s Assistant position and establishing a Carroll County Victim Impact Panel. David J. Brown, 62, of Loran, who was appointed Carroll County public defender in Jan. 2019. He has worked as a sole practitioner since 1987, managing a practice in Rockford since 1990 and a second office in Mount Carroll since May 2019. Brown previously served as a public defender in Ogle and Winnebago counties, as an assistant state’s attorney in Ogle County, and an attorney for the city of Rochelle.

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com MILLEDGEVILLE – Thanks to a group of community-minded men, the missile mascot on the south side of Milledgeville High School is looking good and ready for action. Once an actual working nuclear missile in Huntsville, Alabama, the decommissioned version has been standing guard outside MHS since 1970. The 27-foot missile was propped up by two brick supports, with an old-style message board underneath. In recent years, however, the missile and supports had began to show their age. The school looked into having them professionally refurbished, but the price tag on that project was about $40,000. That’s when members of the Milledgeville Men’s Club stepped in. “They had just deteriorated and had weathered and had started to kind of become an eyesore,” club member Brad Smith said. “We knew that something had to be done. The missile itself, the paint was getting faded. We could tell the missile needed repainting and the supports needed to be redone, so it was a good community project for the Men’s Club to take on.” The project, dubbed “Make the Missile Great Again,” began in late August when the 2,000-pound projectile was hauled to the shop of Brad Stewart, who owns Stewart’s Boom Service. Stewart sandblasted and primed the missile, and got it ready for Ken Duncan to paint. Duncan used about 5 gallons of white paint, as well some orange and black – Milledgeville’s school colors – for the trim. It looked like

It’s going to last a long time.” Once the missile was removed, a host of club members went about cleaning up the site. They tore out the bricks that had once supported the missile, and skid loaders put those bricks in dump trucks to be hauled away. The new support for the missile now could be installed, and that’s where Mark Dettman came in. He designed a 7-foot pedestal made of sturdy carbon steel with a cradle on

top that would support the missile. It also pivots at the top, so the missile can be pointed toward the south or the east by hand, after unlocking the cradle. There had been some debate in town over which way the missile would be headed. “It was talked about spinning it 360 degrees, and I said that probably wasn’t going to happen,” Dettman said with a smile. “You don’t need to go up and spin the missile.” With either donated or discounted materials and labor, it cost the Milledgeville Men’s Club less than $10,000 to complete the project, onefourth of the original bid. “It made a big difference to just do

it locally with local talent,” Smith said. “We’ve got good craftsmen in the area, so it was nice to get them involved.” Milledgeville School Superintendent Tim Schurman needs only to look out his office window to view the missile makeover, and he truly likes what he sees. “We couldn’t be more pleased with how the missile turned out,” Schurman said. “It looks great as you drive up to the school – the profile of it – and really, it enhanced the missile all the way around. “We’re grateful to the Men’s Club. They are a great community organization, and we’re indebted to them for making our missile great again.”

OBITUARIES TIMOTHY M. BURKHOLDER LANARK – Timothy Michael Burkholder, 61, of Lanark, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at Serenity Hospice House, Oregon, after an short illness. On Oct. 8, 1994, Tim married Tammy Kinder. Together, they raised two children and celebrated 26 years of marriage. Tim worked for the CP Railroad for 42 years as a track builder, repairman and truck driver. He was a morning person and a hard worker who believed in doing the job right the first time. He liked working for the railroad and appreciated the friendships he made there. He loved his Harley and collecting toy John Deere tractors, but his truest of all joys in his life were his family, friends and of course his grandchildren. Timothy was a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. Geerts on Oct. 16, 1946, in Morrison. She was employed by the Rations Board, was a telephone operator, and was a deputy clerk at the Whiteside County Circuit Clerk’s office. She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and active with the church quilters. Ila was also a member of the Morrison Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the former Morrison Country Club. She enjoyed sewing, golfing, camping, and antiquing. Survivors include her husband, Marvin; two daughters, Lorinda (Joseph Ste-

Jim went on to study and receive his degrees, majoring in computer science and minors in liberal arts and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls, graduating with the Class of 1985. Jim worked 18 years for the Westlaw Division of the West Publishing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota. At Westlaw, he began his career in computer programming. After several years, he transitioned to work in customer service, helping law firms to integrate the Westlaw software, enabling attorneys’ quick reference in their legal research. h as we look back at 2020. All the typical summer programs had to be done anoth-

er way. We did only one month of library programs which was held virtually. The Young Leaders missed out on hosting any pedal tractor pulls and we also missed out on hosting the Night on the Farm. But while some things struggled, we more than doubled our peach orders this year. It was remarkable to have over 300 boxes sold. Thank you goes out to the Boy Scouts for helping along with board members as well. The biggest shout out has to go to Fred at the Home Center as we could not have unloaded them as easy as we did without his allowing of an employee to come over and take the peaches off the truck with a forklift. Life changer for sure!

Leaders Excellence in Ag award. We have a strong group of leaders in our Young Leader program and take a lot of pride in them. Fair season came and went without. It is still really hard to wrap my head around all that did not happen this year. I am sure you had plans just like I did to make it a great year. Those items are now being pushed till 2021 in hopes of better times. We cancelled our bus trip to see the Cubs and Brewers play and a trip to see Frozen on Broadway. Luckily Mother Nature provided us with good weather to get everyone through harvest this year. I would have never guessed the day would come where we did a virtual IAA Annual Meeting and a virtual Carroll County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. Oh how I missed going to Chicago. I know most dread it, but it is sort of like my happy spot. I light up when driving in there…yeah, I know most cannot say that nor would they want to, but there is something about the city. So as we lay this year to rest and look ahead, I wonder how long till we can again hold meetings in person. How long till we no longer have to wear masks? How long until we can go sit down in all restaurants? How long till we

can again hold town festivals? How long till we can go sit and watch a movie in a theater? Will we be able to host our trip to Milwaukee to watch the Cubs beat the Brewers? So many things we wonder as we sit here patiently awaiting. I think we dare not say what can 2021 bring. I for one feel it still holds lots of uncertainty. We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!

Jim struggled with mental illness and addictions in his adult life, but he always tried to make the best of it. In the last several years he had maintained a level of stability that provided him with a better quality of life. He appreciated the caring assistance given by his friend and caretaker, Marty Niesman. Some of his most cherished moments were with his family, taking trips with his parents, spending time with Mom, and caring for “Cat,” his cat of many years. Jim will be dearly missed by his mother, Maurita Scharman of Freeport; his brother, Karl (Donna) Scharman of Rolling Meadows; two nephews, Austin and Kaleb; and his “adopted” siblings, Patrick Fortune and Debbie (Bruce) Anderson. He was preceded in death by his father, Jim in 2003. Please remember and pray for those who struggle with mental illness and addiction. It’s a hard life.

IRMA JEAN ZIER LENA – Irma Jean Zier, 96, relocated from her apartment in Lena to her mansion in Heaven on December 12, 2020. Her family is rejoicing for their matriarch, as this move has surely restored the spring in her step and her laughter to full volume. Born Oct. 25, 1924 in Wacker, to Harold and Neva (Fulrath) Merchant, she was the eldest of three children. At the age of 12, her

family moved to their farm in Lanark. Before her freshman year, Irma left her family to work for her room and board, so she could attend Mt. Carroll High School. Neighbors reported seeing the teenager cutting through their backyards on her lunch break, so she would have time to serve lunch to her employer and do the dishes before rushing back to school. After graduation, she briefly worked for the War Rationing Board as a compliance agent. It was considered an exceptional job at the time, but after having to cite and testify against rural market owners who struggled to adjust to the system, her conscience forced her to resign. As a young woman, she attended a friend’s party, where Allen Zier, a garage mechanic 7 years her senior, spotted her and saw his future in her smile. On April 2, 1943, they were married at a parsonage in Mt. Carroll. Not long after, he was drafted by the Army to serve in Japan. To cope with the stress of his departure, Irma bought her first pack of cigarettes, which also happened to be her last. She didn’t like them, but her frugal nature demanded she smoke the entire pack. She and Allen settled in Lanark where they raised two children, son Daryl and daughter Deb. She cherished her role as their mother. Even after they grew into adults, she loved fixing delicious Sunday meals and holiday feasts for their families. After her children left home, she enrolled at Highland Community College. She completed her associate’s degree in 1972 and went on to work as secretary/ office manager for the Illinois Education Association until her retirement. Irma had an excellent instinct when it came to the stock market, and she enjoyed making her own trades and following the companies she invested

each of her children and grandchildren to an adventure of their choosing. This resulted in precious memories made across the globe, from the Cliffs of Moher to Athens’ ancient Parthenon (which she noted was less impressive than Nashville’s fully intact version). When they visited, she never failed to greet her family with joyful warmth. When it was time for them to leave, she would always tell them what a blessing they were and thanked them for making time for her, right up until her final day on earth. Irma was proceeded in death by her husband, parents and her brother Van Merchant, who passed just one month before her. She is survived by son, Daryl (Joanne) Zier of Neillsville, Wisconsin.; daughter, Deborah (William) Dietz of Lena; sister, Ellen (Joe) Beja of Hot Springs, Arizona.; grandchildren, Rodney (Dennae) Dietz, Sara (Curtis) Derrer, Tabitha (Ryan) Engel, Darlene (Anthony) Fenner, and Donna Zier (Zeshan Anjum); and 11 great-grandchildren. Irma’s children are making future plans for a celebration of life, though they know Irma is already celebrating with her Heavenly Father - and perhaps enjoying a game of bridge with her dear friend Margaret. They would like to offer a special note of gratitude to Irma’s wonderful in-home caregivers, Joyce Shelly and Marsha Larson, as well as FHN Hospice. Condolences may be sent to Irma’s family, care of Deb Dietz in Lena. Plans for a memorial are in the works.

in. She also was a vital helpmate to her husband at Zier’s Garage, often picking up part orders or going with him on wrecker calls. While Irma remained a devoted and loving daughter, there was one lifelong point of contention between her and her mother, who declared Irma a redhead and discouraged her from wearing any clothing with a similar hue. Claiming the last word, in her mid80s, Irma bought a shiny, red Buick to compliment her collection of cherry-colored blouses. Irma’s favorite pastimes included travel, laughter, volunteerism, laughter and bridge club. And laughter. She was an active member of the Lanark United Methodist Church until moving to Lena in 1999, when she began attending Martintown Community Church until her health made outings difficult. A woman of honesty and integrity, there was a singular occasion when Irma succumbed to temptation during a visit to Chicago. She sneaked into a chocolatier convention with her daughter and a friend, where they were assumed to be buyers. The ruse paid off, because Irma discovered her longtime chocolate allergy had lifted! Even as her appetite dissipated in her final days, she handily transformed snack sized Hershey bars into empty wrappers. Irma loved weekly visits and holiday sleepovers with her five grandkids. Black Friday cookie baking was a favorite annual tradition, where messy little hands were celebrated rather than chastised. Her grandchildren’s summers were filled with family vacations spent exploring mountain ranges, national parks and ocean coastlines in their grandparents’ motorhome. For those of you who have not been in our new building yet, please note when you enter the front door Senior Center will be to your left and VA will be to your right. We are working on ways to make the entry way more welcoming for our clients. Our new address is 17612 E. Benton St., Mt. Carroll, Illinois. I received notice from Sandra Aude, Local Coordinator for the AARP Taxes, that they will not be doing any in person tax preparation this year. AARP is working on other alternative ways they would be able to do taxes returns. As soon as we are updated we will let you know. We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to help with paper pick up in Lanark and at Lake Carroll. The volunteer that was doing this is no longer able due to health problems. So if you would like to volunteer to help please give me a call at 815-244-1800. We received a notice from SHIP that the new monthly Medicare Part B premium for 2021 will be $148.50 and the annual deductible for Part B for 2021 will be $203.

Carroll County Transit is taking applications for drivers. You would need to pass a DOT Physical. Please stop by to pick up an application if you are interested in joining our team. Our exercise and book room will be closed until further notice. We decided to close this room to help stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Thank you so much for your cooperation in this matter. Since our Book and Exercise Room is currently closed down we ask that you refrain from donating any books to the Senior Center. Unfortunately in our new building we do not have the room for them as we did in our old building. Please be aware of COVID-19 vaccine scams!! Following recent approval from the FDA, the COVID-19 vaccine is being distributed across the country. Unfortunately, this gives scammers an opportunity to trick those who are eager to get vaccinated. The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office is warning the public to be wary, especially during the holidays when scam calls tend to increase. If you receive these types of calls it’s important not engage in any type of conversation. Right now, these types of vaccinations aren’t available to the public. Don’t tell them any kind of information, don’t tell them you know it’s a scam just hang up the phone. There haven’t been any locally reported scams yet but if you start to receive calls or messages that sound like one you can report it to the FTC. You can also file a complaint through your state or attorney general. According to The Federal Trade Commission

(FTC), consumers should be advised to the following: • You likely will not need to pay anything out of pocket to get the vaccine during this public health emergency. • You can’t pay to put your name on a list to get the vaccine. • You can’t pay to get early access to the vaccine.

• No one from a vaccine distribution site or health care payer, like a private insurance company, will call you asking for your Social Security number or your credit card or bank account information to sign you up to get the vaccine. • Beware of providers offering other products, treatments, or medicines to prevent the virus. Check with your health care provider before paying for or receiving any COVID-19-related treatment. • If you get a call, text, email — or even someone knocking on your door — claiming they can get you early access to the vaccine, STOP. That’s a scam. Don’t pay for a promise of vaccine access or share personal information. Instead, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or file a complaint with your state or territory attorney general through consumerresources.org, the consumer website of the National Association of Attorneys General.

Activities Recycling Senior Service earns a great deal of money each year through the efforts of those who gather newspapers and aluminum cans in their respective communities, and those who bundle the paper and haul it to the local distribution centers. We need more help with this project. The “gathering” people work just a couple of hours a month in their respective communities. The “bundlers” work at the Senior Center just about any day when they have an hour or two to spare. And the “loaders/haulers” help load and/or haul the papers to the distribution center. Seniors Around the County Are You Turning 65? Do you need help understanding Medicare A, B, C and D? Then come and see us at the Senior Center. We will help make this time easier for you. Turning 65 can be very confusing with all the information you receive in the mail about which Medicare D Plan to take or which supplemental to get. If you are about to turn 65 and have questions, stop by and see our SHIP Counselors, Deb Connor and Karen Holm, and we can help you sort through the confusion. Also remember to stop at the Carroll County Courthouse to complete your Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption application and affidavit. When you turn 65 and become eligible for Medicare, the best time to enroll is during your Initial Enrollment Period. Your IEP includes the 3 months before, the month of, and the 3 months following your 65th birthday. If you enroll in Medicare during this time, you will avoid late enrollment penalties. The date when your Medicare coverage begins depends on when you enroll during your IEP. For your coverage to begin as soon as possible, it is best to enroll in the first 3 months of your IEP. Your Medicare coverage will then go into effect starting the month you turn 65. To enroll in Medicare, please stop by the Senior Center and we can do this for you. It is important to be proactive and take the steps to enroll during your IEP. If you miss your IEP, you may be limited to specific times when you can enroll in Medicare in the future, and you may face a penalty for late enrollment, resulting in higher premiums.
