SCHULTZ Shaw Media SAVANNA – Poopy’s Pub ‘n Grub, which opened on Friday, May 8 for curbside service and was allowing patrons to dine on site on well-distanced picnic tables, was told by the state today to cut it out. The popular and colorful bar and grill at 1030 Viaduct Road, one of the biggest biker bars in the region, was allowing patrons to come inside to pick up covered containers of food and drink as long as they wore masks and adhered to social distancing. Hard alcohol was not sold, owner Kevin Promenschenkel said on Facebook. They then were allowed to dine on the outdoor patio on tables spaced 10 feet apart. “Poopy’s is different, because we have the outside room to facilitate. Nobody ate or drank on the inside premises.

The Illinois Liquor Commission issued Promenschenkel a ceaseand-desist order, which he posted on Poopy’s Facebook page this afternoon. “Please be advised that your establishment is unlawfully operating amidst a declared limitation on services that is necessary and proper to prevent further spreading of the COVID-19 pathogen,� the order said. “Consistent with the general heath and safety actions taken by many public officials and under the advice and authority of state public health officials, the governor of the state of Illinois has ordered that on premises consumption cease at establishments serving food and beverages.� Poopy’s will continue to offer curbside service, carry-out and delivery, as is allowed. “No consumption of food or alcohol can be consumed on the property. You must leave the property with your products to consume,� Promenschenkel wrote. “Thank you to all of the customers who supported us.�

Tony McCombie has written a letter to the governor urging opening up campgrounds and allowing more than two people when boating. McCombie, R-Savanna, said she’s concerned that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Restore
Illinois plan limits boating to two people and “keeps campgrounds shuttered for most of the prime summer camping season.” Families should be able to boat together, and boating can be safer when there’s more than two people in case there’s a medical emergency, the boat overturns after hitting a stump or a boater is knocked off by getting hit in the head by an Asian Carp, McCombie said. “This outcome of a two-person limit merits further review and correction based on safety concerns alone regardless of the common-sense arguments

Deadline for Carroll County grants for teachers extended

The deadline for the Excellence in Education Grants for Teachers program has been extended to Oct. 1. Carroll County Unit of Retired Teachers Association Foundation Chairperson, Jean Ferris said the IRTF is making $36,500 in grant money available to provide additional funds to Illinois public school educators in pre-K through grade 12 so students will have the means to participate in special projects. Grant recipients will be chosen in the fall, and the awards will be presented thereafter. The maximum award is $750. Grants will be awarded for enduring projects that help impact students year after year, and will not be awarded for field trips, consumables, or awards-rewards. The Regional Transportation Committee is responsible for the development and implementation of the Human Services Transportation Plan. HSTP identifies transportation needs and develops solutions to improve transportation services for the general public. LANARK – Josh “fuzzy” Meador, 31, of Lanark, died February 25, 2020 at UW Madison Hospital. Josh was born August 16, 1988. He was the son of Larry Meador and the late Linda (Muth) Meador. Josh was a graduate of Lanark High School in 2006. He was a was previously employed by Lake Carroll Restaurant and Meador Ag Service. Josh had a smile that was infectious and spirit that couldn’t be broken, even by an accident that left him paralyzed in 2008. He became an inspiration to other paraplegics by going to NIU and sharing his story of strength and determination. In May 2017, Josh graduated Magna Cum Laude from Highland Community College with an Associate of Arts Degree. Josh continued to live his life to the fullest, continuing to ride and take many trips in his Harley side car, including a trip to the Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee with his dad and brother.
GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY His supportive friends and family made sure he always and lots of fun and he was able to enjoy life, leaving many stories to share and memories to hold close. Josh is survived by his father, Larry (stepmom Lori Meador); his brother and best friend, Jeff Meador; nieces, Madelyn and Grace Meador and nephew Breyden Meador; stepbrothers, Dylan Simler, Daren (Anna-Cheri) Simler and their children, Olivia and Lucas; and stepsister Daniel (Mario) Misiaszek and their children, Brynlee and Evan. Josh is also survived by many aunts, uncles (including his devoted great-uncle Bill Meador, who visited often, bringing him special treats), cousins, special friends, his long-time caregiver Stella Allen, and his other wonderful special angel caregivers. He also leaves behind his faithful furry companions, Bronx and Harley. His example of living with adversity will never be forgotten as he made the best of every day, most would never know the pain he felt. Josh wanted it that way. Josh’s mother, Linda (Muth) Meador, and his grandparents Dean
and Dolores Meador and Leonard and Veronica Muth, preceded him in death. A memorial fund has been established for FHN Hospice in honor of the great care they gave his mom, who he missed greatly. Josh requested no services. A celebration of life originally scheduled for June 6, 2020 has been rescheduled for a later date.

Parade held for Missile’s state music champs BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com MILLEDGEVILLE – The COVID19 pandemic truncated the Illinois High School Association music sweepstakes, but the fallout didn’t take anything away from Milledgeville High School musicians, who still excelled. With the solo and ensemble portion of the state contest already complete, the organizations portion, set for April 17 and 18, was canceled. At the time of cancellation, Milledgeville was tops in solo and ensemble in Class D, and on April 23, the IHSA awarded its sweepstakes champions to those already in the lead. The musical champs were honored with a parade through Milledgeville and Chadwick on May 8. It wrapped around town from the south side to the northwest side via the downtown, and proceeded along state Route 40 to Chadwick. Scott Mattison, who is in his second year as choral director, called it a great achievement for the students. “They got it in their heads that they could do this, and worked hard
to become state champions,” Mattison said. “The success comes from our students buying in to our program and knowing that with hard work they can achieve the success they want.” Competition began March 7 at West Carroll High School in Savanna, where Milledgeville performed along with several local schools. Schools compete to earn points determined by judges based on criteria established by the IHSA. After the competition, the points scored by each school are compared with other performance sites. Milledgeville scored 249 points, well above runner-up Grant Park High School’s 165. Four vocal performances were considered “best of day” by judges: solos by Ali Mertz and Anthony Lapp, a duet by Olivia and Marissa Sturrup, and a mixed duet by Sydney Pauley and Kyle Lapp. Each performer picked their songs, Mattison said. Winning state has been a dream for years, Pauley said. “Hours upon hours were spent in

Band, choir, and our music educators have been instrumental in shaping all of us. “Nearly half of the members of arts programs at MHS are seniors, and even though our senior year ended in a less-than-ideal way, it means the world that we accomplished this dream together.” Milledgeville received 28 “superior” scores among nine vocal solos, six vocal double duets, five vocal duets, three sets of vocal choirs, one each of a vocal double duet and saxophone quartet, and one each from its handbell, percussion and woodwind choirs. An additional 19 “excellent” scores came from six vocal solos, six instrumental solos, a vocal duet, a vocal double duet, mixed percussion ensemble, brass choir, and mixed brass, percussion and woodwind ensembles. Milledgeville has plenty of success at the state level in recent years. The program won the Class C state championship in 1999, 2 years after taking home its first trophy after placing second in 1997. In the 14 years since they moved into Class D, the state’s smallest level in terms of enrollment, Milledgeville took runner-up honors in 2013, 2016 and 2019, and had third-place finishes from 2007-09, 2011-12, 2014-15 and 2018. Among local schools, Rock Falls was fourth in Class A with 396 points. In Class B, Oregon was fourth with 498 points, West Carroll fifth with 375, and Byron ninth with 216. In Class C, Forreston was fourth with 201 points, and Eastland was fifth with 198; Newman, Morrison and Prophetstown also competed in Class C.

No shortage of livestock, just a delay in processing I know there has been talk in the news about meat shortages. There is not a shortage of livestock there was just a delay in processing. Currently packing plants are opening back up after hiccups with the virus. May is National Beef Month. Annually the average American eats 62 pounds of beef. Beef cattle production represents the largest single segment of American agriculture, with more than 800,000 ranchers and cattle producers in the United States. Texas leads the nation in beef cattle production. In Illinois, about 23 percent of farms raise beef cows. Everyday 76 million Americans eat beef. More beef is consumed on Memorial Day than any other day of the year. The Fourth of July and Labor Day typically tie for second place. Beef is one of the most important dietary sources of iron. To obtain the same amount of iron found in a 3-ounce serving of beef, you’d have to eat at least 3 cups of raw spinach. Cattle were first domesticated in 6500 B.C. The first meat inspection act was in 1890. Once cattle reach market weight, (typically 1,200-1,400 pounds and 18-22 months of age) they are taken to the processor. Once the meat has been processed, it is inspected to ensure it is safe, wholesome, and currently labeled and packaged before it heads out to the stores for consumers. So for those who were unsure of the process, our farmers have the animals needed to keep meat on our tables. It is unfortunately after the farm where the hiccups happen. With the virus, it caused plants to be closed to ensure the meat is safe. With patience and buying what you need, it will help others be sure they can get what they need as well.

Vita Plus supports local farmers and food efforts
MADISON, Wisconsin — Food pantries throughout northwest Illinois will be able to provide dairy, beef, and pork products to families and individuals in need thanks to $3,000 worth of contributions from Vita Plus. These contributions are part of the Vita Plus Serving Customers & Rural Communities Project. Vita Plus, an employee-owned livestock feed and nutrition company, has committed $100,000 to support rural food security initiatives throughout the Upper Midwest. The purposes of the project are to assist those in rural communities during the COVID-19 pandemic while also supporting dairy, swine, and beef producers by purchasing their products as dairy and livestock farms face subsequent market challenges. Through this broad-based effort, local Vita Plus nutrition consultants and facilities will identify opportunities to make a difference in the communities where they and their customers live and work. “It’s easy to take for granted things like a refrigerator full of food,” said Augusta Witt, Vita Plus dairy consultant. “This has opened my eyes to the need right here in our local communities. We need to help our
neighbors and, at the same time, anything we can do to support dairy and livestock farmers by decreasing the surplus in their markets is valuable.” The following contributions have been made as part of the Vita Plus Serving Customers & Rural Communities Project: • The Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency in Freeport received $500 to purchase and distribute milk, ice cream, and yogurt to senior citizens in Stephenson, Carroll, Jo Davies, and Whiteside Counties through the Golden Meals program. • The Lena-Winslow Pantry received $500 to purchase dairy products from local processors and distribute them to area residents. • The Pearl City School District received $500 to purchase additional dairy products to be distributed to families via the school breakfast and lunch programs. • Faith Community Church in Davis received $500 to purchase dairy, beef and pork products for distribution through its food pantry. •A $500 contribution was matched by the Carroll County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Livestock Feeders,

COVID-19 stalls Morrison, Milledgeville charters Local bus companies hit hard by pandemic travel restrictions
the moment is set for May 30 in Illinois. “Some of my customers have rebooked for 2021, but are afraid to travel until there is a vaccine for it,” Cheeseman said. Wiersema Charter has lost 30% of its yearly income, a figure that grows daily, Wiersema said. Cheeseman expects to make only half of what he made last year. The charter bus industry has high overhead and insurance costs: A new bus can cost around $500,000. Wiersema’s insurance provider refunded a percentage of his payments, but that alone isn’t enough to control the financial decline. Cheeseman paid $4,600 to renew his annual state bus licensing on
March 10 – exactly a week before the state shutdown began – and most of it won’t go to good use, he said. He switched his insurance to bus storage status, and cut staff. “I feel bad about laying off my employees, but come June, I don’t expect to have enough work to keep one person busy,” Cheeseman said. “I will just do the small amount of trips by myself. Right now, we have only 11 days of trips out until Aug.1.” The financial hit will be felt by customers when nonessential travel does return, whenever that will be. “Our prices, unfortunately, will have to go up to help with the significant loss we have had,” Wiersema said.
At least one bus will move from Wiersema’s garage this week, but it will be traveling at a far cry from full capacity. Gregg’s father and mother, owner Larry Wiersema and his wife, Jan, will be among 1,000 owners of motorcoach businesses throughout the nation who will meet Wednesday in Washington D.C. to rally support for federal government funding of motor coach businesses. Nearly 1,000 buses from 400 companies in 46 states will make the trip. Some federal relief may be on the way. In a bipartisan effort to obtain CARES Act assistance, two senators and two representatives have written to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, seeking support for bus and coach businesses. The CARES Act provides loan programs to help companies “bridge the coronavirus crisis,” but the rules “do not fully recognize some of the unique challenges motorcoach companies face, particularly the high level of capital investment needed to maintain vehicle fleets,” Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island said in their letter. The $15 billion-a-year motorcoach industry provides 600 million passenger trips a year, and now about 3,000 bus motorcoach operators and their fleet of 36,000 vehicles are at a virtual standstill, they said. “This important industry faces a long road to recovery and requires immediate assistance that is flexible and meets both its short- and longterm needs. “We must ensure that the motorcoach industry is still there for our communities when this pandemic has passed.”

Buses at Wiersema Charter Service in Morrison haven’t moved since March 14, and at Cheeseman Coaches in Milledgeville since March 8. The halt couldn’t have come at a worse time: This is their peak travel season. “We are just in a waiting period as of right now,” said Gregg Wiersema, vice president of his family’s 53-year-old company, which was started by his grandfather, Marvin. “All we can do is wait and try even harder to reduce our costs, but we want to continue to provide the same service.” Trips to Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Washington D.C. were planned for Wiersema’s buses in the middle of March. Last week, Cheeseman had two trips to New England and one to Niagara Falls and upstate New York in the fall canceled. Customers were given refunds. Even when travel restrictions are lifted, in Illinois and elsewhere, fear may linger. Paul Cheeseman, whose company has three coaches, said most of his riders are senior citizens who may not want to travel immediately after shelter-in-place is lifted, which at

Brackemeyer ran with Nick Allen, Nathan Mickley and Keegan Anderson 2 years ago to win the Class 1A 3,200-meter relay state championship in 8 minutes, 0.59 seconds. He teamed with Mickley, Anderson and Hunter Newman to repeat as state champions last season with a time of 7:57.85. The Mustangs took fourth place in last year’s 1A state meet. Brackemeyer also teamed with Mickley, Newman and Alex Anderson to take second place last year in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:24.85. The year prior, he teamed with Mickley, Keegan Anderson and John Winkleman to finish seventh in 3:26.85. In individual races, Brackemeyer took home his third medal from last year’s state meet with a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run in 1:57.49. He also finished 10th in the 800 2 years ago in 1:58.39, and eighth 3 years ago in 1:57.56; and also qualified in the 1,600 run as a freshman. Brackemeyer helped form Morrison’s first cross country team since 1969 and is a four-time sectional qualifier. He qualified Eastland’s Lydia Coatney for the state meet his sophomore year, when he finished in 15:49, Eastland’s Lydia Coatney and his senior year with a time of 17 minutes.

A state title in girls basketball has brought home more accolades to Eastland High School. The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association honored four local coaches for its Coach of the Year Award in their respective geographical districts. Two coaches were honored for each district per enrollment classification In girls basketball, Eastland’s Nicole Brinker was honored in Division 10 for Class 1A and Amboy’s Mike McCracken in Division 11 in 1A. Eastland won the 1A state championship this past season and finished with a record of 34-3. Amboy gave Eastland two of its losses before falling to the Cougars in a sectional final. The Clippers had a record of 30-2. In boys basketball, Newman Central Catholic’s Ray Sharp was honored in Division 11 for 2A, and Fulton’s R.J. Coffey in the same for 1A. Newman was 27-6 last season and advanced to the sectional final. Fulton finished 24-10 and won its first regional title since 2000.
