Sullivan’s Foods customers donate to Bark Park
Rep. McCombie launches Summer Reading Program State Rep. Tony McCombie is officially launching her 5th annual Summer Reading Club for elementary school students who live or go to school in the 71st District. The Reading BUZZ program is offered to encourage students to start or continue positive reading habits. “I have always been an avid reader and, as you can imagine, goal driven,” McCombie said. “I want kids to join our reading challenge and hopefully Tony McCombie make memories they share later in their lives. Reading was a passion of my Grandma Reagans’ and we shared a lot of time together reading. This program could be a time for families to unplug, enjoy the quiet and each other’s company.” Reading BUZZ challenges elementary school students to read eight books before Aug. 13. Pamphlets are being electronically distributed to schools and libraries, and paper forms are available via direct mail upon request or online at RepMcCombie. com. Participation in this program can overlap with any other summer reading program offered through area libraries, schools or other organizations. Participants will receive a special treat to reward them for their reading and also will receive a certificate from the Illinois House of Representatives. To participate, a parent or guardian must fill out and sign the form and return it to Rep. McCombie’s office by Aug. 13. Students or their parents may fill out the form online at repmccombie.com.
Heritage Canyon will host May Day event
May 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 515 N. Fourth St. in Fulton. Buildings will be open and volunteers will dress in clothing to demonstrate what life was like during that period. There will be a petting zoo, storytelling, live music, Native American flute playing and beading. Professor B-3 and his bubbles will be in attendance. Children can make a May basket to take home. All events will have COVID-19 protocols in place and socially distancing will be practiced. Parking is limited at Heritage Canyon. A free shuttle will be available at Cross View Church, 703 14th Ave., to take visitors to and from the event. There is no charge to attend. Donations will be accepted. Coffee, tea, water, popcorn and ice cream will be sold.
5k for brain health slated for May 22 in Coleta Coleta Sportsmen’s Club, 21038 Pilgrim Road, will have a Run for Brain Health 5k trail road race starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 22 to raise awareness for mental health month. The race is sponsored by McKenna’s Flooring. All participants registered by May 15 will receive a t-shirt. The cost is $25. Proceeds will benefit NAMI Sauk Valley. An after party will be at noon at Wally’s, 6 Washington St., Milledgeville with appetizers and drinks, participants will receive one complimentary drink. MILLEDGEVILLE – Terry Jo Dykema, 61, of Milledgeville, previously of Chadwick and rural Thomson, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 11, 2021 at home. She was a loving wife, caring mom and doting grandma. A private family graveside service will be held at the Chadwick Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to share in Terry’s life at www. lawjonesfuneralhome. com. Terry was born Jan. 26, 1960 in Kodiak, Alaska at the naval station, the daughter of Elmer and Joanne (Winkel) Ferris. The family moved around to follow Elmer’s Navy career, taking them to Minnesota, California and finally to Savanna. Terry attended Savanna schools, graduating with the Class of 1978. After high school, she worked at the Savanna Army Depot. Terry found the love of her life, Arlyn Dykema, who grew up near Thomson. They were married Feb. 14, 1981 in Savanna at the Community Church of Christ. Terry and Arlyn had 40 years of marriage.
Terry mostly enjoyed the satisfaction of watching her grandchildren dance and play. A highlight was attending the Grandparents’ Tea event at their school. She also enjoyed the title of “Pancake Queen” cooking large family meals, and baking her scrumptious treats including cakes, cookies, and brownies. She liked movies that made her cry, especially on the Hallmark channel. Diet Pepsi was her drink of choice and Pizza Hut was her favorite place to eat. The simple things in life meant the most. Supporting her children’s dreams and spending time with her husband Arlyn provided the fabric of her life. Terry will be dearly missed by her husband, Arlyn Dykema of Milledgeville; two daughters, Jessica (Aaron) Weires of Chadwick and Caitlin Dykema of Mt. Carroll; her son, Ryan Dykema of Sterling; three grandchildren, Lillian, Reid and Jax; and a brother, Mark Ferris of Chadwick. She is preceded in death by a son at birth, Joshua James; a grandson at birth, James Michael Weires; and both parents.

day, March 24, 2021 after a courageous 15-month battle with uterine sarcoma. She was born Sept. 1, 1951 in Sterling, the daughter of the late Paul and Betty (Gilbert) Sites. Anne married Ray Schubert on September 6, 1975 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milledgeville. In October of 2019, she retired from MetLife after 22 years. Previously, Anne had worked 26 years in payroll and human resources at Structo/Thermos. For 40 years, she enjoyed cashiering hundreds of auctions with Freeport Auction Service, Lobdell Auction Service and Calhoun Auction Service. Anne also volunteered for Freeport Lincoln-Douglas Kiwanis fund raising and service projects. She also enjoyed reading, working in the yard, antiquing, and playing cards with Tom, Peg, Linda and Virginia. Anne also loved to travel, taking trips to Alaska, going on cruises in New England and Canada, attending Rose Parades, fall trips to Michigan and Door County, visiting Amish Country, and exploring wineries. She was also a Packer fan, and would
watch the games with Ray, keeping his emotions in check. She is survived by her husband, Ray Schubert of Freeport; sister, Jane (Wayne) Bossler of Crofton, Maryland; nieces, Susan Hammert and Marcia Bossler both of Maryland; nephew, Chris Kingery of Maryland; and stepbrother-in-law, Larry (Tresa) Randecker. She was preceded in death by her parents. A very special “thank you” to FHN Hospice and to Pat and Pat for their loving, tender care to keep Anne comfortable and at peace. A celebration of life/time of remembrance will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to FHN Hospice or Lincoln-Douglas Kiwanis. Condolences may be shared at www. walkermortuary.com.

Believe it or not, your teens do need your guidance about how to avoid drinking alcohol. Disappointing their Parents is the number one reason teens decide not to drink alcohol. As a parent you may have the greatest influence over a teen’s behavior. In fact, experts believe parents play a key role in preventing teen car carshes and deaths. Here’s what you can do: • Understand that most teens who drink do so to get drunk. • Recognize the dangers of teen drinking and driving and that teen drivers are at much greater risk of crashing after drinking alcohol than adult drivers. • Provide teens with a safe way to get home (such as picking them up or paying for a cab) if their driver has been drinking. Providing alcohol or places for teens to PARTY, carries serious consequences. Under Illinois State Social Host and Parental Responsibility Laws you can be fined up to $2500 and/or imprisoned. If someone is seriously injured or dies because YOU provided the alcohol or the places for teens to party, YOU can be found civilly liable, and this can COST YOU Everything … Your HOUSE, your CAR, your FUTURE.
