Sauk Valley mass vaccination clinics fill up fast BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com All four of Sauk Valley’s first COVID-19 mass vaccination clinics announced last week, which are being done with the help of the Illinois National Guard, filled almost immediately, within a day or two, health department officials said. Carroll County held the first clinic on March 31; Ogle County went all day on April 1 at Byron Middle School; and Lee County’s is set for Saturday at Sauk Valley Community College. Whiteside County’s held one on Monday at the McCormick Event Center in downtown Rock Falls. Appointments were required; no walk-ins were taken. The clinics are only for people who live or work in the county in which the clinic is held. The vaccines are free. Out of concern for an uptick in COVID-19 cases in Region 1, which includes the Sauk Valley, the state announced in a news release Friday that it was sending Rapid Response Vaccination Teams made up of Guardsmen and support staff to all four counties, “to bend the trend in a region seeing increased vulnerability

Getting people signed up was quite an effort. “We received very little advance notice, so once this date was confirmed we reached out to Jim Klinefelter [the county’s County Emergency Services & Disaster Agencies director], and he was able to coordinate a group of volunteers, phones and computers to help us make over 600 phone calls,” Holland, who coordinates the county’s vaccine clinics, said in an email Tuesday. “We worked like crazy Friday and Saturday,” to notify everyone on their waiting list, Holland said. “Together, we filled all of the time slots in two days ... we are very thankful for the help that we have received.” The steady stream of residents flowing in and out of the Chadwick Elementary School gym during today’s daylong clinic was a tes-

Big plays spark Newman win over rival Morrison BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com STERLING – A double dose of Newman proved to be just enough in this year’s annual grudge match against Morrison. Senior linebacker Brett Newman spearheaded a stout defense for the Comets, and they were able to hang on for a 14-7 victory on April 1 at Roscoe Eades Stadium. Newman (2-0) was coming off a running-clock win against Bureau Valley, but was pushed to the limit by Morrison (1-2). “Coach [Brandon Kreczmer] always talks about being tougher than the other team and hitting them in the mouth,” Brett Newman said. “I feel that’s what we did tonight. We gave it our all, and that’s all you can ask for really.” “Hats off to Morrison,” Kreczmer said. “[Morrison] Coach [Ryan] Oetting does a great job. That was an old-fashioned football game – a lot of hard hitting, a rivalry game. To get a game like this, early in this shortened season, could definitely springboard us forward.” Newman’s offense played keepaway a good chunk of the second half, as it churned out tough yardage against a stout Morrison D. The Mustangs had just three second-half possessions, and Brett Newman ended two of them. Morrison pieced together a drive that began on its own 16 and reached the Newman 15, where it was 4th and 7. Mustangs quarterback Nathan Helms dropped back to pass, but was sacked by Brett Newman back at the 22. Morrison had one last chance. On a 3rd-and-5 play from the Mustangs’ 43, Helms threw a pass that glanced off the fingers of 6-foot-7 receiver TC Ottens and into Brett Newman’s hands with 1:54 to go. The Comets were able to run out the clock, as the Mustangs were out of timeouts. After a scoreless first quarter, Morrison pieced together a 9-play, 52-yard march capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Helms to Alex Anderson. Helms’ extra point made it 7-0. Newman responded with a 6-play, 54-yard drive, with Andrew Velasquez rumbling in from 14 yards for the score. Jacob Donald tacked on the tying extra point. The Comets’ go-ahead score came right after halftime, an 11-play, 67-yard drive finished off by Velasquez from 4 yards out.

They have a lot of big receivers that went up and got it. A lot of the plays TC had, we were right there. He’s 6-7 and went up to go get it. It was good team defense, and anytime we can win the takeaway battle, we’ll take it.”

Charles wins in Equine Science Placement

Tri-County Opportunities Council scholarships available

Olivia Charles was selected as the State FFA Proficiency Winner in Equine Science Placement. Charles is a member of the West Carroll FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association FFA. Supervised Agricultural Experiences allow students to learn by doing by either owning and operating an agricultural business, working or serving an internship at an agriculture-based business or conducting an agriculture-based scientific experiment and reporting results. Charles was selected as the State Winner by a committee of agriculture teachers knowledgeable in this work-based area. She is the daughter of Terry and Christy Charles from Mount Carroll. Receiving this honor now makes Charles eligible to compete in the National FFA Awards Selection process in July 2021.

At least 12 scholarships will be awarded by the Tri-County Opportunities Council to income-eligible students residing in the agency’s service area. The scholarships are worth up to $1,250 and have been made available by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development through its Community Services Block Grant funds. All low-income students, racial or ethnic minorities and previous scholarship winners are encouraged to apply. To be eligible for the scholarship competition: • The applicant must be a member of an income-eligible household. • The applicant must be attending an Illinois accredited post-secondary educational institution of higher learning during fall 2021. • The applicant must be a resident of Bureau, Carroll, LaSalle, Lee, Marshall, Ogle, Putnam, Stark or Whiteside counties in Illinois. • Students must be considered full-time (minimum of 12 semester hours) to qualify for the full $1,250 scholarship. • Part-time students will be considered, however, scholarship awards will be pro-rated if they are selected as a winner. OBITUARIES EUNICE G. DAGGERT

FAYE L. HONCHELL

MOUNT CARROLL - Eunice G. Daggert, 98, of Mount Carroll, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Allure Nursing Home, in Mount Carroll. A private funeral service was held in her honor at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Mount Carroll, on April 6, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Mt. Carroll. Eunice was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Clinton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harold and Verna (Voltz) Best. She attended Clinton schools, graduating from Clinton High School. On June 1, 1941, Eunice married Sherman C. Daggert. The couple enjoyed 47 years of marriage before Sherman’s passing in 1989. Eunice spent years working for Shimer College as a cook and server, while running the college grill on campus, and also at Oakville Golf Course. Her most important work, however, was that of a wife, mother, and grandmother. She valued her family more than anything in life and took great pride in caring for them in every way she could. Luckily for her family, this included her excellent baking! The delicious scent of fresh-baked bread and cinnamon rolls was commonplace in the Daggert household. In her free time, Eunice truly loved reading her Bible, attending church service, and listening to and even playing church hymns. She served as an organist at Trinity Lutheran. She also enjoyed needle point, and playing cards, especially cribbage and 500, with her friends and family. Eunice will be dearly missed by her son, Douglas (Marilyn) Daggert of Mt. Carroll, and Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, daughter-in-law, Dottie (Darrell) Daggert of Texarkana, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Corey (Cory) of Freeport, Nikki (Eric) Yerly of Byron, Chris (Karen) Daggert of North Port Alabama, Mark Daggert of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, David (Bonnie ) Bishop of Fort Collins Colorado, and Kelly (Robin) Bishop of Texarkana, Arkansas; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Verna; husband, Sherman; brother, Levere Best; and son, Darrell Daggert.

MOUNT CARROLL – Faye Loris Honchell, 89, passed away peacefully March 23, 2021, at her home in Mount Carroll, surrounded by her loving family. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the funeral home. Masks will be required by all attendees. She was born at her grandmother’s house in Riverdale, to John and Mabel (Bishop) Needles on Dec. 12, 1931. Faye was a lifelong resident of the neighboring Chicago south suburbs of Riverdale, Dolton, and South Holland, until settling in Mount Carroll over 15 years ago to be close to her granddaughters, Kathleen and Nicole as they grew up. Faye graduated in 1949 from Thornton High School in Harvey. After graduation, Faye took the train into Chicago and began working in the hat department at the Carson Pirie Scott department store. She often told her granddaughters stories of how exciting and glamorous this job seemed to her at the time. She later found her career working in medical records for the Illinois Central Railroad Hospital. She became active in the union while working for the ICR hospital and it was during this time that she met the love of her life, John S. Honchell. Faye and John married on May 31, 1969. Faye retired as the assistant librarian of medical records in 1971 upon the birth of her son, Steven. John passed away suddenly in 1977, leaving Faye to raise Steven with the help of her family and her friends from their Cregier Avenue neighborhood. Faye volunteered in many capacities for her local parish and the larger community over the years, especially working in roles to benefit her son and his peers. Later in life, Faye had a second career working for the Motel 6 in Highland, Indiana as a desk clerk and made many great memories and friends there as well. Being a grandmother was Faye’s favorite and most beloved job. Faye created many fond memories with her girls and was the “fancy” grandma who seemed to have an endless supply of

costume jewelry, elegant hats, and silk scarves for the girls to enjoy. Faye collected Disney movies for the girls and was always ready to shop for the latest movie release to ensure she nabbed it before it went back into “the vault.” Faye loved shopping for her girls and made sure they always had beautiful dresses to wear for every occasion. She especially loved dressing the girls up and bringing them to Sunday church services with her. Faye’s faith and her family were the center of her life; her devotion to both was a worthy example to all who knew and loved her. Faye was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, John and Mabel; her brother and beloved sisterin-law, Jack and Yoshi Needles; stepson, John P. Honchell; her cousins and lifelong friends, Arlene and Louis Ursitti; friends and “Sisters,” Theresa Matusak and Kathleen Doherty; and friend and “Guardian Angel,” Benjamin Stepanian. Faye is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steven & Amanda Honchell; her beloved granddaughters Kathleen and Nicole Honchell; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Kathleen

Needles; nephew Gene (Charlene) Needles and their children Alexander, Coleman and Paige Needles; niece Colleen (Thomas) Steward and their children Thomas, Jack and Annie Steward; and niece Carol (Chris) Kaas. She is also survived by her “adopted” grandkids Roman, Jessica, Jennifer, and Nathan Timm; her beloved friends and “Sisters,” Elsie Vogel and Kathleen Schall; and several cousins.

MILDRED A. KAUL CHADWICK – Mildred Alice Queckboerner-Heffelfinger-Kaul, 104, died March 27, 2021. She was the first child of Albert and Olive (Barnhart) Queckboerner, born on Sept. 21, 1916. She was educated in rural Beede School and Chadwick High School. She was married 40 years to her husband, Charles Heffelfinger, who died in 1975. DEAN ‘SPEED’ ROBINSON THOMSON – Dean “Speed” Robinson, longtime resident of Thomson, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at the Sarah Harding Retirement Home, Clinton, Iowa. A private family service was held at the York Community Church in Thomson with burial in Lower York Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Tipton Auction House, Thomson. Carroll County 4-H to host Northwest Illinois Livestock & Dairy Judging Contest April 10 MILLEDGVILLE – The Carroll County 4-H Foundation will have the Northwest Illinois Livestock & Dairy Judging Contest on April 10 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds, 28374 Milledgeville Road. The contest will be held rain or shine. Registration will be 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. and the contest starts at 10. At this time youth will judge two rings of beef, sheep and swine, and four rings of dairy with one production ring in each livestock species. The eleventh ring will be a questions class. Walk-ins are welcome. Before the contest, the judge will go over what to look for when placing the classes. After the contest, the judges will give reasons and placings. The contest is open to all youth from any county. The cost is $5.00 per person judging, payable at registration. A box lunch will be provided to participants and helpers. Adults are needed to serve as ring leaders. Due to COVID virus, a waiver will need to be signed at registration by everyone attending. Social distancing practices will be observed, wear a mask. She was also preceded in death by her sons James Heffelfinger in 2011, and Kenneth Heffelfinger, in 2019; a great-great-granddaughter, Kambri Folkers; and her six siblings (and their mates); Robert, Ray, Russell and Lyle Queckboerner, Lenora Bushman, and Margaret Hartman. Mildred loved reading, word puzzles, crocheting, and sewing. She made and hand quilted her first queen-size quilt at age 93. She and husband Charles operated a café in Chadwick for many years where her day began with baking five pies before their first breakfast customer arrived at 6 am. Later, during her marriage to Clayton, she took on the responsibility for the farm bookkeeping and delivery of eggs through several counties, all the while sewing, hemming and mending for many customers and family. She leaves a blended, loving family of adult children, Ronald (Lorie) Heffelfinger of Winnebago, Nancy (Richard) Janssen of Milledgeville, Eldon (Kathy) Kaul of Blaine, Minnesota, Kenneth (Chris) Kaul of LeClaire, Iowa, Theresa Heffelfinger of Sterling, and Sandi Heffelfinger of Englewood, Colorado; grandchildren, Daniel (Debbie) Janssen, Joseph (Donna) Janssen, Deana Janssen, Rhonda (Tom) Stead, Tim (Amy) Heffelfinger, Ted (Lynn) Heffelfinger, Todd (Michelle) Heffelfinger, Trica (Nick) McNiece, Kristen
