State’s attorney chosen as new associate judge Scott Brinkmeier to replace Associate Judge Kane BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@shawmedia.com MOUNT CARROLL – The man who’s held the position of Carroll County state’s attorney for 20 years is stepping up to the bench. Scott J. Brinkmeier, 52, of Mount Carroll, elected to a sixth term in November, will be filling the vacan-

cy created when 15th Judicial Circuit Associate Judge John “Jerry” Kane advanced to resident circuit judge. Before becoming Carroll County’s top prosecutor, Brinkmeier worked for seven years as an assistant state’s attorney in Whiteside County. Brinkmeier was among seven attorneys to apply for the position. He was chosen by a vote of the eight judges in the 15th Judicial Circuit, who interviewed applicants and sought input from members of the bar and the general public. During his two decades as state’s attorney, Brinkmeier has contributed to the formation of the Carroll

County Juvenile Justice Council, to obtain funding for a part-time Victim’s Assistant position and establishing a Carroll County Victim Impact Panel. He received his undergraduate degree in 1989 from Millikin University in Decatur and his juris doctor in 1992 from the University of Illinois in Champaign. It will be up to Carroll County Board Chairman Kevin Reibel to appoint a replacement for the top prosecutor. After the board vacates the position, Reibel will call for suggestions from both county party committees, but because Brinkmeier is a Repub-

lican, so, likely, will be his replacement, Reibel said. Once the position is vacated, he has 60 days to make his choice. Kane, also a Republican, was elected to the Carroll County circuit judge spot in November, defeating Democratic candidate and Lanark attorney Betsy Shaulis. His resignation as associate judge took effect Dec. 7. The 15th Circuit covers Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle and Stephenson counties. All judges handle essentially the same type of cases; associate judges are appointed and district judges are elected.

Planning continues for aerial combat memorial Motto is: “To Honor – To Educate – To Inspire” In early 2018 a handful of veterans and some community members met in Lena to explore the possibility of creating an F-4 Phantom Jet Memorial Park in northwestern Illinois. The site in Lena on Main St. was selected for the site as the land was donated to the committee for the purpose of the Memorial. Shortly thereafter, the group became the owners of one of the last remaining F-4s. Due to the generosity of the northwestern Illinois communities, organizers were able to pay the initial cost of bringing the aircraft to Lena. On one of the coldest days in history the jet was delivered to its temporary position at Rafters Restaurant just outside of Lena.

The aircraft will remain there until it has been restored and painted. To date, more than 100 walkway paver bricks have been engraved. All donations are appreciated, but there are additional donation levels: Bronze $250 – Silver $500 – gold $1,000 – Platinum $5,000 – Diamond $10,000. It is the committee’s intention to recognize higher donation levels separately at the park. As with most everyone, 2020 was not kind to fundraising efforts, but that has not diminished the enthusiasm for completing this project, organizers say. What’s been going on includes pylon engineering, ongoing fund raising and “Buttoning Up” the jet for display. What lies ahead is painting of the jet, lifting the jet up onto the pylon, moving the jet to the permanent site, and construction of the pylon. Officers and directors of the project are:

Local band to release album amid pandemic Morrison native is one of the band members BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com For a lot of college students, spring 2020 was a trying time as the COVID19 pandemic shut down campuses and sent them packing for home. For Gabe Zeigler and his Monarch bandmates, it provided an opportunity. The result will be an EP album slated to be released Feb. 1. Zeigler is a senior at Augustana College in Rock Island. He plays guitar in the band that also includes lead singer Luke Steinke, guitarist Devin Lott and drummer Ben Vanderlaan. Zeigler, Steinke and Lott are from Sterling, Vanderlaan is from Morrison. Steinke and Vanderlaan are seniors at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, while Lott is a graduate of the Madison Recording Institute. They formed Monarch about three years ago, and have played at different events in the Sauk Valley, including the Petunia Festival and Gardenstock. They played a gig at Champs Bar in Sterling on March 14, just as

of time that we could work with,” Zeigler said. “Essentially, we met mid-to-late March and developed a plan for this, and over the next month and a half, we put together fragments of old songs that we had worked on, but never really finished.”

That writing process resulted in six songs. “It was entirely fresh,” Zeigler said. “We wrote all of the songs over Zoom. We flushed them out to the point where we knew we had something good. Then it led to three- to four-hour rehearsal sessions while getting baked by the sun. It was really, really tough and required a lot of effort and coordination from the group. It was a totally different approach, and it really shows.” In May and June, the group got together at Jordan Creek Recording Co., a facility operated by Zeigler about 5 miles north of Sterling. They would rehearse in the driveway, while staying socially distanced from one another. Douglas Ganster, a Braidwood native who graduated from Augustana a few years ago and whom Zeigler got to know during their time together there, was brought in to play bass, allowing Steinke to concentrate on vocals. “It was a really intense and different process,” Zeigler said. Jordan Creek Recording is in an old barn on property that has been in Zeigler’s family for a long time. He’s had other bands work there in the past. “It’s just a fantastic acoustic chamber. It brings out a warm and powerful sound, for drums especially.”

The six-song album is called “The Sunroom EP” and is a sign of the times in two ways – the world in which we all live in now, as well as the evolution of the band Monarch. “The reason we called it The Sunroom EP is because it really felt like we were looking at the whole world through a window, both as a band and a society, at the time of writing it,” Zeigler said. “We still kind of are. People were staying inside for weeks. They weren’t seeing their friends. They weren’t seeing their family. It kind of felt like we were watching and waiting for something to happen. “Also, the sunroom metaphor alludes to what it’s like to be a small town local band, where you’re got 8 to 10 years of musical experience, you’re working hard and you’ve made some really cool connections. You know at the point in your life where you’ve made it so far, but there’s so many people out there that haven’t met you or your musical personality yet. It’s kind of like a bubble, and you’re trying to break out of that bubble.” The Sunroom EP will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, Prime Music and YouTube. It is the second album for the band, following “Mask” in 2018. They also released four singles in 2019. With the band members all in

The 79-year-old, agile and fun-loving woman knocked on her friend’s window when she was ready to take the plunge, fell background with confidence and proceeded to make her beautiful snow angel. When she was finished, she stepped back and took a look at her work and said, “Not bad ... It’s beautiful!.” Her peers at Resthave were impressed and talked about the snow angel all day.

These seminars will focus on transportation laws and regulations as they pertain to the agricultural industry. Rodney Knittel, IFB assistant director of transportation and infrastructure along with enforcement professionals will discuss new and old trucking rules and regulations and how they pertain specifically to farmers. “These live, online seminars provide farmers a great opportunity to ask their transportation questions firsthand for discussion and feedback with enforcement officials,” said Knittel. “This program will introduce farmers to new rules, remind them of the current ones that still apply and help them figure out whether exemptions are available.” Representatives from enforcement agencies such as the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police will participate in the virtual meetings to discuss the rules and issues they see

New Ogle County Brewery plans to open soon Beer brewing starts in Ogle County BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com One of the final steps of opening a brewery is, of course, brewing the beer. That’s what Ogle County Brewery owners Joshua Skinner and Brian Wynn are working on this week ahead of their opening within the next two months. They, along with their third business partner, Mike Basciak, haven’t yet set a concrete date for their downtown Oregon location. Before getting into the old National Clothing building on the corner of Illinois 64 and Illinois 2, beer was brewed in Skinner’s garage. “We have the same system in my garage,” Skinner said. “It’s just on a bigger scale. It’s not that difficult moving up. Getting larger mill and pumps, but it’s the same. It will be easier to brew here when it’s all set up and it’s less-cluttered. We’ve brought in light beer, a stout, brown ale, maple brown ale, IPA and a seltzer. Just brewing some stuff having fun and letting the guys test it out and give us feedback.” The brewery will have at least 11-12 beers on tap after opening. Nine will be exclusive to the location and three or four others will be imported from Hilsenbeck Bier, a brewery partner in South Germany. Skinner got connected with Hilsenbeck through his accountant, who knew a relative of the brewery that lives in Naperville. Some seasonal beers may be on tap in Oregon from the foreign brewery as well. “Really good beer, a solid company,” Skinner said. “It’s just been great to work with them and bring in more products. Having them in collaboration with us will be fun and we’ll do collaboration beers with them at some point when the master brewer can come here.” Ogle County Brewery will have a full food menu including mini pizzas, sandwiches and wings. “Pretty much all the food will be unique to our place,” Wynn said. “There’s nothing on our menu you can get at another restaurant or bar here locally besides wings. Our sauces you can’t get elsewhere.” The brewery will have video gambling as well when it opens. Later this year there are plans to expand downstairs, where there will be bags, darts and video games. The ownership group has a desire

to source ingredients and resources locally. “Our yeast comes from Chicago,” Skinner said. “Our hops come from Amboy. We used local spec cranes. Haven’t found a local grain source yet. We’d like to.” Building owners Mark Gale and Kevin Wiegmann renovated and transformed the historic building to pave the way for the building. Wynn’s favorite part is the floorto-ceiling front window, which also functions as a garage door for warmer weather. “The aesthetic of the old building is very welcoming,” Wynn said. “It

feels like home. It’s been pretty cool seeing it transform especially these front windows. We saw pictures of what it used to look like. It’s completely different and opens it up.” Wynn is most excited to get into a rhythm and see people come in and enjoy the beers they make. He believes Ogle County Brewery will be a good compliment to other places in town, not a competitor. He imagines someone going kayaking with White Pelican on the river and coming to get a craft beer afterwards. “A great place for the community

to come and gather and have something unique to this community,” Wynn said. “Just a lot of unique things coming alive here in Oregon. It’ll be fun.” Skinner told patrons to keep an eye on the Ogle County Brewery Facebook page for an open dates. The Indians led 14-7 after one quarter, 30-24 after two, and the score was tied 36-36 after three before the Indians closed things out by outscoring Eastland 13-8 in the fourth.

Eastland senior post player Karlie Krogman scored her 1,000th career point with 1:03 left in the first quarter in a Feb. 6 game against Aquin. The senior flashed into the lane and received a perfect pass from a teammate and laid the ball up and in to give the Cougars a 13-8 lead en route to a 57-44 win at home. Krogman is the 10th Eastland girls player to reach the mark. She finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Talena Rogers and Natalie Hughes each scored 11. Rogers also had six assists. Eastland led 15-10 after one quarter and 29-18 at halftime before Aquin chipped away at the lead with a 14-point third quarter.

Eastland 74, Aquin 69: The Cougars led 18-17 at halftime, then outscored the Bulldogs 22-18 in the third quarter to en route to an NUIC victory in Lanark.
