Experts weigh in on vaccination questions Bustos holds town hall for questions about COVID-19 BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@shawmedia.com Everyone who can get one should. That’s the advice medical professionals gave Jan. 27 during a virtual town hall on the COVID-19 vaccine hosted by U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos of the 17th Congressional District. The town hall featured Monica Hendrickson, Peoria’s Public Health Administrator, and Sandy Salverson, Vice President of Pharmacy Operations at OSF HealthCare. More than 100 questions were submitted for the town hall, with about a third asking about eligibility for the vaccine, Bustos said. “The biggest issue that we have is we don’t have enough volume of vaccine right now,” Hendrickson said. Phase 1A focused on health care workers and first responders on the front lines, Phase 1B targets those 65 and older as well as K-12 teachers, and 1C will include those age 16 to 64 with pre-existing health conditions that make them more at risk for the virus, among others. The start of Phase 1C is a moving target, as 1B represents a large population group and will take weeks to cover, Hendrickson said. The department has about 1,200 vaccine appointments a week, and those slots often fill up within an hour, she added. Bustos is optimistic with how quickly President Joe Biden is working to increase vaccine distribution, and he announced Tuesday that they will be purchasing an additional 200 million doses likely to arrive during the summer. That will bring the U.S. supply to about 600 million doses, and the goal is to vaccinate at least 100 million people within his first 100 days in office and 300 million by late summer or early fall. The hope is that supply will catch up with demand and the vaccine will be widely available from different outlets, as is the flu shot each year, she said. A Sterling teacher submitted a question of whether it was fair to vaccinate teachers before those who are more vulnerable. Teachers were higher on the list

because schools are at high risk for fast infection that can lead to super spreader events, Hendrickson said. “Teachers were selected for a reason, and so were people 65 and older,” she said. A Rock Falls resident asked if people who have already tested positive for COVID-19 need to get vaccinated. There’s evidence of a lingering immunity from those who become infected, but it’s temporary and they should still pursue a vaccine, about 90 days after recovering from coronavirus, Salverson said. It’s also possible to be infected more than once. “If you’re able to and can, we want you to get vaccinated,” Henrickson added. In the U.S., COVID-19 has claimed more than 425,000 lives and infected more than 25 million people. Bustos became infected with COVID-19 in November from her husband, Gerry, who’s the Rock Island County Sheriff, and said the vaccine is crucial to returning to normal. “As someone who had it, I can tell you the vaccine I think will be a savior to our nation so we can get on with our lives and not worry about getting COVID,” she said.

The company produces sinks, faucets, water coolers and drinking fountains. Increased demand for the company’s Smartwell Water Deliver System, as well as the ezH2O Water Bottle Filling Stations, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, is the main reason for the expansion. “We’ve seen an exponential increase in demand for our handsfree products,” said Kraig Kniss, vice president of operations for Elkay’s plumbing business. “Where previously convenience, taste and sustainability were among the leading drivers of demand for these products, the recent pandemic has led building managers across the nation and around the world to

reexamine how they are meeting the need to provide access to drinking water in their public places.” Two refrigerated assembly lines and one bottle filler tower assembly line will be added. They are expected to be fully staffed and operational by May. An automated CNC/Laser for sheet metal fabrication also is planned. It is expected to be up and running later this month. Additional hires also are expected to be made at Elkay’s Savanna manufacturing plant and a distribution center in Freeport. On Dec. 15, the Savanna plant produced its 7 millionth water cooler. “I am extremely proud of every team member,” Regional Plant Manager Joe Lentini said. “The demand for our products has been three times our anticipated amount, and the teams’ overall effort, ability to adapt and find ways to improve has been world class.”

New daycare in Morrison has room for 94 BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com MORRISON – Some Morrison children soon will have a new place to spend their weekdays, thanks to the generosity and cooperation of some adults. The Early Years Academy, 508 French Creek Road on the southeast side of town, is set to open in two or three weeks. It is a dream come true for Scott Selmon, owner of Climco Coils, a business adjacent to the daycare. Selmon recognized a need for a new daycare in Morrison, not only for people with young children in town, but also for his employees. He spent about $500,000 getting Early Years built. “One of the big needs for employees is child care,” said Lisa Sage, administrative assistant for special projects at Climco Coils. “One of the biggest reasons for call-off is lack of child care and reliable child care. The community needed it. Our employees needed it. It was always a dream of Scott’s to do this.” The facility is built on 5 acres donated by the Morrison Area Development Corp. Kim Ewoldsen, a volunteer and its former director, was involved with the project and

child-care facility. We do have a childcare facility in town; however, we have outgrown the capacity there.” Morrison Community Daycare was established in 1972 and is in the lower level of the Presbyterian Church at 100 E. Lincolnway. It is

licensed for 40 children. The Early Years Academy, after a meeting with a state official on Friday afternoon, got word it will be licensed for two shifts of 94 children each. “This is super-exciting,” said Jennifer Magnafici, owner/director of the academy. “The demand is so high in this community, and all the surrounding communities. It’s a wonderful opportunity for everyone to have a quality service. Not only are we going to offer daycare services, but we also offer preschool as well.” Magnafici was director of Bright Beginnings Christian Daycare and Preschool in Dixon for about three years, but that ended in April when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. She was alerted via social media about a new daycare in Morrison, and after acing the interview process, took the reins at Early Years in July. Climco Coils owns the facility, while Magnafici owns the business and is leasing the facility. She has been getting calls every day from interested parents and guardians about placing children, many from Climco.

“Scott has always had a dream of having a daycare in the community for his employees,” Magnafici said. “It’s a win-win for him because one-third of my enrollment belongs to Climco employees. It’s a written rule that they speak for those spots first. It’s nice that we can offer that service to his families and employees, but it wins for me, too, as it brings enrollment into my center.” Ewoldsen and her former team at the Development Corp. toured daycare facilities in the Sauk Valley and surrounding area for about a year, looking for what worked and what didn’t. The result was a facility with six classrooms, nine bathrooms and a large multi-purpose room, with a playground outside. A sidewalk will surround the facility and will be painted like a road, for bicycles and tricycles. “There was a lot of due diligence that went into this to make it a perfect center,” Ewoldsen said. Magnafici has hired 14 teachers with six more to handle both shifts, and also will hire an assistant and a cook. She hopes to have the facility up and running by the second week of February, once licensing from the Department of Children and Family Services is officially received. The daycare will be open from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday hours may be added at a later date. With COVID-19 numbers falling once again and vaccines available, the coast was clear for sports to start up again, but now time is running out before the end of the school year, causing the IHSA to have to squeeze three seasons worth of sports into about 20 weeks. That is resulting in quite a bit of overlap, such as in April with the displaced fall sports running through the end of the month and the traditional spring sports allowed to begin practice on April 5. At Sterling, that means a crunch on facilities, where boys and girls track, boys and girls soccer and football will all be looking to practice and

Competition can start after teams have seven days of practices, and seasons will wrap up March 13. Some basketball teams were able to practice already, with the state allowing practices for teams in regions in Phase 4 of governor J.B. Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan. For the Dixon girls, there were open gyms last week and official practices will get going this week. “We’re feeling for all those basketball programs that are not in a Phase 4 region,” Duchesses coach Luke Ravlin said. “We feel blessed we may get a chance to play. We’re excited overall.” At Oregon, boys basketball coach Nathan Green saw a core group of players who have been committed during this long offseason putting in work. “I think they’ve earned the chance to come out and be able to play,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of energy and effort. We’re looking forward to it. We’re going to continue to follow the safety protocols to make sure we can play as long as we can. We’re just hopeful and thankful we’re getting the opportunity.” In July, the IHSA released a revamped sports calendar for the school year, moving traditionally fall sports football, boys soccer and volleyball to the spring and pushing the traditional spring sports to a late-spring/early-summer season. Under that plan, basketball would have

There will also be overlap for some of the athletes themselves who may have been planning to play more than one sport. “I understand it,” King said. “I love this plan except for the overlap. It’s going to cause some problems, kids play two sports, coaches have to work things out.” That issue is especially acute at small schools like Newman, where many athletes would be playing multiple sports in a normal year. Now, athletes may have to choose and coaches may have to work not having a full roster for part of the year. “My initial reaction was what about the health and safety of the kids, having overlapping sports like that and not giving them full time to acclimate to the sports,” Newman athletic director Mike Papoccia said. Papoccia is also worried about transportation to away games, with additional COVID protocols having to be in place to space athletes out requiring additional buses to be used. Not having a postseason in other sports means that, as the plan stands now, teams like Sterling volleyball, Newman football and Eastland girls basketball will not be able to defend state championships won last school year. “I think we’d already kind of mourned that,” Brinker said. “We’ve already moved past that. It definitely is crushing, that’s obviously always the most exciting part of the season. We’ve moved past that part, we’ve mourned that part, and we’re just excited to get out on the court, no matter in what fashion.”

id you know that February is National Potato Lover’s Month? Who loves National Potato Lover’s Month more than Neumiller Farms? When most people think agriculture, they think “typical” row crops, aka corn and soybeans. They think livestock including hogs and beef cattle, they don’t think of potato farmers. I have been fortunate enough to tour Neumiller Farms a few times and work with them on various programs. Did you know they moved their operation headquarters to Carroll County in 1979? They also grow more than just potatoes. They grow green beans, sweet corn, field corn and soybeans. They work diligently with the food manufacturers who buy their product to ensure it is safe and meets the standards that have been set. Their priorities are food safety and sustainability. We are very fortunate to have their family farm in our county. The potato is about 80% water and 20% solids. An 8-ounce baked or boiled potato has only about 100 calories. The average American eats

ran across my first-grade report card once and I was somewhat surprised to see that I got a C+ in reading. Now that I think about it, it wasn’t until the fourth grade at Montmorency School when Mrs. Hunter read books to us in class that I got hooked. After that, I was the kid who read everything, including the cereal box while I ate my breakfast. Turns out it was good practice for what I do now. Most of us eat things that come in bags, boxes, or other packages. Some, if not many, of those foods are not very good for us. Sadly, soda and chips are always on the bestseller list, and while some packaged foods obviously are unhealthy, what should we look for to make better choices? You can’t always go by the front of the package. Like the dust jacket on the latest bestseller that’s meant to draw you in, you can’t judge a food by its cover. Some of the claims on the front of the package might be considered almost fictional, i.e., some cereals that advertise “whole grains” contain a tiny percentage of actual whole grain compared to refined. So, how do you distinguish between the food equivalents of trashy romance novels and foods that would be better for your body and your brain? Enter the nutrition facts label. The nutrition facts label is strictly nonfiction. It tells you pretty much exactly what’s in the package, and if you read carefully, you can steer away from the worst packaged foods. Here are some tips: • Avoid products that have a long list of ingredients or ingredients that you can’t identify or pronounce. Chemicals in the form

of artificial colors and flavors, preservatives, and fillers may cause health issues. • Packaged foods are notoriously high in sodium, and a high sodium diet contributes to high blood pressure, stroke, stomach cancers, and kidney disease. Most of us should be eating less that 1,500 mg per day. If the milligrams of sodium per serving are higher than the number of calories per serving, it’s probably too much. • Trans fats and saturated fats lead to clogged arteries. Avoid products that contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil, palm oil, or coconut oil. • Some sugar is found naturally in foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains, but manufacturers add sugar to many packaged products, and added sugars can really add up. Some labels now separate added sugar from naturally occurring sugar. Just keep in mind that 4 grams of sugar equals one teaspoon. One of my favorite quotes comes from well-known children’s author Tomie dePaola, who said, “Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything.” Reading food labels can help you learn how to improve your diet and your health.

Kable Printing Plant demolition moving along BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The demolition of roughly 25 percent of the old Kable Printing plant in Mt. Morris has brought tears to some of the former employees who worked there. Several cars, driven by past employees, passed by the site at 404 S. Wesley Avenue last Friday morning as three excavators worked on demolishing the brick portion of the once-thriving business. “I worked there 20 years. It’s just so sad,” said one past employee. About 230,000 square feet of the facility will come down including the east end offices and the south side ink farm and press rooms. Village Trustee and former Kable employee Jerry Stauffer said the work is being done to upgrade the property for a future sale. He said the demolition will likely take months. The property has been owned by Phoenix Investors of Milwaukee since 2018 when that firm purchased it the 644,000 square-foot plant property for $200,000. The portion of the facility that is being demolished has been remodeled “too many times” and needs to come down, Stauffer said. Phoenix purchased the property from Mt. Morris Business Park LLC, Downey, Calif., which has no connection to the Village of Mt. Morris. Mt. Morris Business Park LLC bought the property in March of 2013 for $375,000. According to a 2018 article in the Milwaukee Business Journal, Phoenix Investors specializes in buying large, vacant industrial buildings, updating them, and leasing them to new tenants. Quad/Graphics Inc., based in Sussex, Wisconsin, ceased production at the plant on May 13, 2011, ending 113 years of printing at that location. The business was originally called Kable Brothers Printing and was founded in 1898 by twin brothers Harvey and Harry Kable. For decades Kable Printing was the village’s largest employer, at one time providing jobs for more than 2,000 people. Quad/Graphics, Inc., acquired the Mt. Morris plant in January of 2010 when it purchased Worldcolor Press, Inc., for $1.3 billion.
