Ag in the Classroom helps students celebrate 100th day of school As part of its 100 days of school celebration, Ag in the Classroom visited classrooms in German Valley, Kings, Chadwick Milledgeville and Stillman Valley. During the program, students were read “Ms. Bindergarten Celebrates 100 Days of Kindergarten.” In the book, each of Ms. Bindergarten’s students brings in a collection of 100 items. For example, Adam brought in a fort made of 100 popsicles sticks. Students worked together to put each of the items in the book into one of the following categories: cotton, trees, pigs, soybeans, sugar, cows and corn. They learned how these agricultural commodities play a role in their everyday life. At the conclusion of the program, students used their imaginations to create something new and agriculturally related

using the number 100. Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society. Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them – on their plates, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics. Ag in the Classroom is offered through the University of Illinois Extension-Ogle County in partnership with Ogle County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Ogle County Soil & Water and Carroll County Soil & Water. MORRISON – The Morrison Music Theater Association has announced the cast for its performances of “Steel Magnolias.” The production will be at 7 p.m. March 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. March 13 at the Morrison Institute of Technology. “Steel Magnolias” began as a successful off-Broadway play, which was adapted into a blockbuster film starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley McClain, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis. It takes place at a beauty parlor in a small Louisiana town, where the ladies share the town news and their joys and sorrows. The MMTA production is directed by Joplin James Self of Sterling. Cast members Kelsey Bumann as Annelle Dupuy-Desoto and Jordann Langner as Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie are from Dixon. Angie Lobdell of Rock Falls portrays M’Lynn Eatenton, and Nicole Pfieffer-Oberg of Sterling is cast as Truvy Jones. Completing the ensemble are two Morrison actresses: Bonnie Phend as Clairee Belcher and Senietta Porter as Ouiser Boudreaux.

TimberLake Playhouse to have auditions Feb.12 and 13

MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse will have auditions Feb. 12 and 13 for children who would like to play orphans in “Annie,” and local adults and non-equity actors. TLP is seeking children ages 6 to 16 who can sing and move well to play the roles of orphans in “Annie.” Auditions will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at TLP. “Auditionees are asked to prepare 32 bars of a song. Please bring sheet music as TLP will provide a piano player,” said Dan Danielowski, TLP executive director. “Orphans or local auditionees may bring a CD with audition tracks instead of sheet music if preferred. Each auditionee must also register for a dance audition taught throughout the day. Make sure you are in attendance for one of the dance sessions and wear clothes you can move in with appropriate shoes (no heels). Yes, we are looking for a current college student to join us for the summer planning programs, leading events and learning more about Farm Bureau. If you know of someone who would fit this role, have them reach out to our office. With Valentine’s Day just a few days away, we have a selection of nuts and candies available for your sweetie. Yes, that does include cashews! I made sure we had plenty on hand this year. Did you know that today is National Pizza Day? Melinda, our Ag in the Classroom coordinator, does a program teaching students about all the farmers it takes to make a pizza. With the Super Bowl coming up, it is even more fitting to talk about pizza as it is the day in which more pizza is consumed than any other day! Last year, more than 12.5 millions pizzas were ordered, with the most being ordered an hour before game time. That is a little too close for me. It is also the largest tipping day, as well. Will you order pizza for the big game? There are so many varieties of pizza. The crust is where it all starts. You can

Chicken wings, followed by pizza, are the top foods. We have always heard the football being called the pigskin. However, that is not the case anymore. Most footballs made for competitive sports are made from cowhide. One cowhide can make about 20 footballs. The only football manufacturer the NFL allows to make its game balls is Wilson Labs. Footballs are created by hand by 120 employees. These hardworking folks produce 4,000 footballs daily.

Pearl City FFA pork chop dinner is Feb. 11

The dinner will include a pork chop sandwich, chips, cookie and drink for $8. The Pearl City FFA and FFA Alumni hosts the dinner along with a silent auction to raise funds to benefit the Pearl City FFA.
