Savanna to sell or trade its old ladder truck for training By MICHAEL MILLER For Prairie Advocate SAVANNA – After a public hearing held before the Dec. 9 meeting, the Savanna City Council received a request from the First in Response training group from Chadwick, requesting the city donate its old ladder truck to them in exchange for training. Alderman Bill Robinson said the committee recommended Mayor Tony McCombie secure storage for the truck, which has been done, and then have Fire Chief Shawn Picolotti attempt to sell the vehicle according to city codes until April. If the truck is not sold by April, then they recommended to open up negotiations with First in Response for its proposal. The council directed Picolotti to get an ordinance ready that would allow them to go ahead with selling the vehicle. The public hearing to open the meeting was held to determine whether or not to honor the request of Ken Smith, of Iris Street, for the city to vacate a portion of that street in order for Smith to more freely utilize the area. After lengthy discussion, the council elected to take no immediate action on the matter, adjourn

Nashville musician coming to play at The Crooked Roof LANARK – Chris Clark is a singer/songwriter/producer who has spent the last 20 years in Nashville working with artists such as Joe Nichols, Hank Williams Jr., Bomshel, Eric Church, Cledus T. Judd, as well as appearing in the movie “Country Strong,” starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tom McGraw. Chris is scheduled to perform Dec. 27 at The Crooked Roof in Lanark. He relayed a request for funding for Draw 9, a bank Services, for the waste water treatment plant design, in the amount of $14,255, as well as $18,012 for its design engineering services for the in-system sanitary sewer component. In addition to these monies, the draw would encompass $2,000 to the grant administration work done by Community Funding and Planning Services related to the CDAP Grant fund for these projects. In other action, the council passed the second reading of ordinances providing for the city’s annual tax levy, as well as the abatement of both 2004A and 2004B bonds.

West Carroll Agronomy Team places highest in school history The West Carroll FFA Agronomy Team of Christy Ralston, Rachel Badtke, Brianna Kampmeier, and Cassie Johnson, recently placed 14th at the State FFA Agronomy Career Development Event on Dec. 6 at the University of Illinois. “West Carroll’s finish is

believed to be its highest in history and rated them as a red rating team,” stated Don Mathey, WC FFA advisor. There were 39 teams and 153 individuals competing at the State CDE. Individually, Christy Ralston received a blue rating and scored 258. Rachel Badtke also rated blue and scored 246. Brianna Kampmeier rated red

with a score of 221, and Cassie Johnson rated white with a score of 177. The contest consisted of judging rings of corn, soybeans, oats and wheat; identifying 25 live weeds and 25 live crops; completing a soil practicum; and taking a written agronomy exam. The top 3 scores were used for the team score.

“If state funding to Eastland was reduced in order to give more funds to less affluent districts, proponents of SB16 said that districts like ours would have the ability through referendum to tax ourselves at a higher rate in order to restore our funding to the level of adequacy,” Hansen continued. “Any district can choose to raise taxes on itself with the approval of its taxpayers, but the truth is that as a state, Illinois is not adequately investing in core public services. Unfortunately for those who like to argue otherwise, all objective metrics show that the result of over-spending on core to accept, but as someone once said, ‘facts are stubborn things.’” “Our residents have supported education with a higher tax rate, while the State has not kept their constitutionally-required support for GSA,” Mathers stated. “By prorating GSA at 89 percent, you

further punish low EAV districts like West Carroll who do not have the ability to raise taxes to replace the lost revenue.” Regardless of the temporary stop to SB16, Hansen referenced another fact: “We still have the income tax that is about to be reduced on Jan. 1, and the proposal to shift the state’s pension costs to local districts. And as long as we continue to tell ourselves in this state that we have a spending problem, rather than a revenue problem, some sort of reduction to Eastland’s funding is going to occur. All of this because we continue to debate proposals from the false premise that Illinois cannot afford to pay for core services.” “I am heartened by the fact that Governor-elect Rauner has stated repeatedly that education is his priority, and making Illinois schools the best in the nation is his goal,” stated Schurman. “It would be contrary to that stated goal to come in and decimate our budget. I am hopeful that he will bring in some expertise to help and create some opportunities for increased funding for elementary

and secondary education. “But allow the income tax increase to sunset? It would be too much of a shock to the budget to all of a sudden, have this billion dollar hole. I would think that the legislature will sunset the income

tax increase in an incremental fashion, staggered over the course of the next 2 years. It just doesn’t make sense to eliminate the tax increase where we can cut a billion dollars from the budget.”

Daniel enjoys working with calves - that is, if they’re healthy and thriving. He’s already had a tough time with illness, etc. with the calves he has had in the past. Midnight is quite stocky and seems to be healthy and doing well. Hopefully it can stay that way. Yesterday I made a batch of granola. I thought maybe that would be something you’d like to try. Homemade Butterscotch Granola

10 cups oatmeal 2 package graham crackers (Crushed) 2 cups coconut 1 cup chopped pecans (optional) 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups of butter 1 cup of butterscotch chips Melt butter and add to dry ingredients. Spread evenly on 2 large cookie sheets. Bake at 300 for 40 minutes. Stir every 5 – 10 minutes. Add butterscotch chips during the last minute of baking. Yield: 1 gallon

Grandmaâ€™s cook stove breakfast in those days. By the time you read the news, it was already long outdated. Heaven forbid it could be something important. The old cook stove also had another very vital part on the farm. Many a morning in the winter or spring, newborn calves or lambs were brought in to warm up after being born out in the barn on a cold winter night. The kids loved this part most By Marc Gravert As we start to settle into the idea of winter now, try to think about the winters of old. No electricity, no cars, no central furnace in the house. Doesnâ€™t sound very appealing, does it? Back then, you did what you knew and had always done, so for the most part it was business as usual. Most homes were heated with wood, and a very few had fuel oil burners, but the smell and warmth from wood heat is so much better. And when I say wood heat, it wasnâ€™t like the neat outside wood boilers you see on so many farms and homes today. It was the wood cook stove and pot belly stove that sat right inside the home. You had to cut, split and stack a yearâ€™s worth of wood ahead of time, so it was dry and cured enough to the time you had cut this yearâ€™s wood supply last year. And all the felling of trees and sawing and splitting were done by hand. No fancy chain saws or wood splitters at that time. The old timers always use to say you got several good heats out of cutting and splitting wood: once when you cut it, and once when you burned it. The old cook stove that sat in every kitchen took a special kind of wood. It had to be small enough were not that big. You always had to get it started, and then you could

got going good. In most houses, the kitchen cook stove was the location to be during the winter months. I remember my dad saying that they had no heat in the upstairs bedrooms in the old farmhouse where he grew up. Waking up in the morning with frost on your blankets does not sound like much fun in my book! He said you either grabbed your clothes and headed to the kitchen to put them on by the wood stove, or you pulled them into bed with you and put them on under the covers. Mornings around the cook stove must have been a memorable time with Mom or Grandma cooking eggs with bacon or sausage, and the smell of coffee brewing, and maybe bread baking in the oven. Makes me wonder if we have advanced or not from that time period. If nothing else, they sure seemed to have more family time; not a hurry up, fast-paced, outthe-door, breakfast-on-the-run type that so many familyâ€™s face today. It was more leisurely in the old days, not a big hurry to jump out into the cold of the morning. Breakfast started long before most people do today. Most farmers had half a dayâ€™s work done already by breakfast time. But the warmth of the cook stove on a cold winter morning was also a nice time for Grandpa or Dad to read some of the weekly paper by oil lamp, to see what was going on in the area. No Facebook or Twitter to see what Cousin Tom was having for

rub and scratch them to help warm them up so they could go back to the barn to be with their mothers. A good many baby chicks spent a few days in the kitchen by the wood stove when a batch arrived early from the hatchery. I donâ€™t know what it is about a wood cook stove, it just seems to warm you to your soul. Wood heat seems to warm better, lasts longer, and also makes you feel better. But it took a real cook to know how to use one, and that was something that was learned, not anything you can read about in a book and then know. Many a farm wife was oven was to bake bread just by sticking her hand inside for a moment. To test if a cast iron skillet was hot enough drop a bit of water in it. The old stove was also a magical place to be around for a kid when Christmas time neared. The smells that came from her oven would make a kid drool with anticipation for the goodies that would soon be coming out. The smells of ginger bread and fruit cake, and maybe a Figgie pudding! but it took a lot of elbow grease to accomplish this. Not many people still use wood cook stoves â€“ just a few, and most of the Amish still do. It takes too long to get going, and they sure arenâ€™t microwaves. But there is still something about cook stoves that draw attention from people. Several years ago, my wife was able to bring home her grandmotherâ€™s wood cook stove. It had come all the way to Iowa from Connecticut after her grandmother passed away. Her father had then used it in his shop for a heat source for many years. When my wifeâ€™s parents decided to move into town, no one had room for the cook stove, so it stayed in the country for the new owners. Well, one day on the drive to her parents for a visit, I asked Catherine to show me where here parents had lived, so we took a drive down a gravel road and back down a short lane to the home where her parents once lived. I asked her if she still thought they had her grandmaâ€™s cook stove. So Catherine ventured to the door to ask. Nobody was home, and we left a note detailing what our intentions were. Later that evening, the phone rang and the party asked to speak with Catherine. As Catherine was talking on the phone, tears began to run down her face. I thought something bad had happened to someone. As she hung up the phone, I asked what was going on and she said, â€œOh, nothing bad. That was the man that owned Grandmaâ€™s stove.â€? he had not used it in years and being it was her grandmaâ€™s, he would like to give it to her! A few weeks later we borrowed a small trailer and drove down and hauled it home. We have yet to install it anyplace, but sure have full intentions of doing so. There is something about a wood cook stove that warms your heart. Blessings to you all!

Morrison to cover cost increase for residential, commercial garbage fees By LYNNETTE FORTH For Prairie Advocate MORRISON – The City of Morrison, but not the residents, will be paying an increase in garbage disposal fees taking effect Jan. 1. Moring Disposal General Manager Denny Pate was present at the Dec. 8 city council meeting, asking that the city approve an increase of 50 cents per month per home. The city would see about a 10 percent increase, going from $10.64 to $11.14 per household, from when the initial contract began in 2011. Pate noted that his company is asking the increase of all communities due to payroll and health insurance increases. The council approved the rate increase as presented. Continuing on a similar topic, Lester Matthews spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting, reporting concern over the lack of recycling facilities at Grand View Estates. Matthews noted that there are currently two receptacles for garbage, but none for recycling. City Administrator Barry Dykhuizen reported that recycling services are available in town. living in private residential units or condominiums are responsible for their own garbage removal arrangements. Early morning home invasion in Milledgeville

WCPS Students of the Month

MILLEDGEVILLE – The Milledgeville Police and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department were called to 503 Ninth St. in Milledgeville at 4:15 a.m. Dec. 10 for a reported home invasion. The home owner reported that three unknown subjects confronted undetermined amount of cash. It is

unknown if the subjects had any weapons. There were no injuries. The Milledgeville Police Department was assisted at the scene by Carroll County Deputies and the K-9 unit, as well as the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation unit. This complaint is still under investigation. Carroll County Crime Stoppers is requesting your help in solving this crime. Information leading to an

arrest could earn the caller a reward of up to $1,000. The identity of any tial. Seventy-four scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $7,500 per year, will be awarded a total of $179,800 for the 2015-2016 school year. All applicants must be high school seniors accepted for enrollment or students already enrolled at an accredited college, university or community college. Scholarships are awarded for exceptional academic ability, leadership and financial need. Previous winners of an IAA Foundation scholarship are eligible to apply again. A full listing of available scholarships, eligibility guidelines, and application documents are available at the Foundation website, www. iaafoundation.org.
