A harvest season for ice

By Marc Gravert When you feel like having a cold drink on a hot summer day, today all you have to do is get up and walk out to the kitchen, push a button on the refrigerator and get crushed ice, cubes and even water. Not so long ago, it wasn’t that easy. First of all, you had to wait until it was cold enough to make ice at least 10 to 12 inches thick on the river or farm pond. Cutting ice was not the most looked-forward-to task anyone had. It was hard, backbreaking work that took several days and many man hours, just so you could keep your food cool in the summer months. Everyone – well, almost everyone – had an ice box in their kitchen. It was just an insulated wooden box, or metal in the later years, that would hold a block of ice so your food would keep from day to day. While cutting ice took time and was cold work, most times it went pretty well, because it was a community effort. As they said in the old days, “Many hands make for light work.” Ice cutting was almost a social event, with many families working together to get the job done in a timely manner. ice of snow. power and snow scrapers. Most of the time, if horses were used, they were single horses, as two were too heavy to have on the ice. Once the snow was removed, they began marking the ice. This was also done by horse power. The marking sled was pulled back and forth on the ice and one of the marks was used as a guide for the next pass that was made. The sled generally had two or three blades on each side. The front blade was used to follow the groove of the last path, and the next two would cut into the ice a bit. Now some of these had seats on them, so a little extra human weight would help to mark the ice better. The next step was the most interesting, the actual cutting. Although they did use a horse to do this on the larger commercial operations, most of the time, on a small farm pond or river, it was done by hand. The saws used were not just any old saw you had laying around. They were about 4 to 5 feet long, heavy, and the handles stuck out the top sides. The teeth were also extra long on an ice saw so they could take a big slice at one time. Ice saws also only cut on the downward motion as you have more momentum on the downward stroke. As the ice was cut into long chunks, they were generally cut into pieces with an ice bar. An ice bar is a heavy piece of metal with

Sometimes these weighed 100 pounds or more, so the horse was used again to pull these blocks to the bank where a bobsled was waiting to be loaded with ice to be hauled back to the farm for storage. Once back at the farm, the blocks had to be broken loose again as they would freeze together on the ride home. Sometimes the blocks were cut at this time into more manageable pieces to be stored for later use. For this job, they had ice cross-cut saws where a man on each end would pull the saw back and forth to cut the blocks into smaller pieces. Sometimes they would also dig a hole and build a building over it for ice houses. It was always a treat in the summer when Dad went to get a block of ice for the ice box; the kids usually got an ice chip to help cool them off from the heat of the day. It’s a family affair: Group helps those helping others By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com MOUNT CARROLL — Throughout the generations, children have been cared for by their extended families. Today, for a variety of reasons, there is a growing number of grandparents and other relatives who are the main emotional who are not their own. The Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children support group is a response to this dilemma. “Some of our seniors found themselves in situations where they were helping out their families, so the Senior Center was a natural choice for the location to host meetings, and to become more involved,” said Nancy Gable, executive director of the Carroll County Senior Services Organization in Mount Carroll. Relatives raising children is a growing part of the population. According to Gable, 213,265 children younger than 18 in Illinois are living in a grandparent-headed home, 75,000 are living with other relatives, and 101,317 grandparents are directly responsible for the care of their grandchildren. It can happen to anyone, at any time, for any reason. Dixie Bjarnson, facilitator of the group, said her involvement in the program was instigated by Kate Ling, former pastor of Lanark United Methodist Church, who was initially asked to lead the group. After a short time, Ling realized that her responsibilities as pastor sometimes prevented her from being with the group. “I have a background in family and substance abuse counseling, and Pastor Kate asked me if I would asset her as facilitator,” Bjarnson said. “Now that she is retired, I lead the group by myself.” “Most of our participants join cial support is there, too,” Gable said. “We searched out more information about the program, which is

funded through the state of Illinois. CCSSO applies for a $2,000 grant every year, and we budget for the facilitator’s stipend, the free lunch, and assistance to grandparents and ations. Sometimes, they are taking a child in on short notice, and need to buy an extra bed, or school supplies.” Emergency assistance also may be used to help relatives raising children buy needed items and services, such as home furnishings, school supplies, baby supplies, medications, transportation, counseling, and legal assistance. “The support group offers the opportunity to meet others who share similar challenges that face them as they take on the role of parent to these children. “We cover a lot of areas of assistance,” Bjarnson added. “Selfcare, current childhood issues such as discipline, and substance abuse. We connect people with community resources, like Angel Ministries for food, and Pitter Patter Pantry for help with baby needs. Also, legal and educational concerns, the IRS and are also addressed, depending on the needs of the group. “But there are also emotional issues that come along with raising a family member. Right now, we are doing a fair amount of focus on the grieving process, because we have had so many losses - three deaths - within the group this past year.” Basically, anything that is presenting a problem may be brought to the group. “I am a facilitator, not a therapist,” she said. “Members of the group help each other. They will share information about things

that have worked or not worked for them, and I am there to see that the group runs smoothly, or to give them information on substance abuse, which is often a problem at times when grandparents are taking over the raising of their grandchildren.” “Sometimes, people feel isolated when they are left in a situation where they are responsible for grandchildren, or nieces and nephews,” Bjarnson said. “It’s a life-change, and you tend to feel

Letters and Commentary Pay freeze needed for school administrators

Eastland Superintendent Mark Hansen has been complaining for months about the possibility of the district losing income due to lower state aid and the decline in assessed valuation of real estate in the district. If the district is facing lower income, the board should be tightening the expenditure side of the budget. Yet, on June 23, the board approved a new salary package that increased the pay of district employees. According to the district web site, Hansen will cost the district more than $179,400 in salary and Everything on the income side may be going down, but Hansen’s income is going up. Eastland is a rural school district with many families who depend on farming for their income. The price of grain has dropped dramatically in the past couple of years, which means less income for the community. Taxpayers cannot be asked to do more with even less, just so the district can operate without making any cuts. For years, government employees have been promised pensions which are much more generous than what those of us on Social Security will receive. The state says that local taxing bodies will have to fund a larger part of the pension planes. PIZZA

The state is currently trying to reduce the annual increases to these pensions. I object to these high pensions, but if I do not pay the taxes that are used to support them, my property will be taken from me. Private schools, such as Freeport Catholic, pay their teachers and administrators about half as much as the public schools, and produce well-educated students. There does not seem to be a relationship between the cost of education and the quality of the product. Eastland is considered by the state to have a high assessed valua-

But the schools cannot expect the property owners to continue to pay more and more, and then use that money to increase the compensation of district employees, while the taxpayers are making due with less and less. It is time for school administrators and highest paid staff to forego pay increases and look at a a pay freeze, or even a reduction, as a show of willingness to share the pain. Put family farmers back into Farm to School

Farm to School programs appeared in the ‘90s with a threeway focus: fresh, local foods in schools; agriculture and nutrition education in classrooms; and purchases that support local family farms. Years since have seen these programs grow to include 40,000 schools and 23 million students. However, the focus has slipped from “local family farms” to “local food.” Schools and program administrators alike don’t know the difference between nearby corpo-

“family farm.” Family farmers, schools, and rural communities are losing out. Family farmers lose out on income from sales when schools don’t make the distinction between food grown by a farm family and food grown by a corporation. Schools lose out when they don’t choose a farmer who can demonstrate how crops and livestock are raised. And communities lose when food dollars go to a corporation headquartered elsewhere instead of to a local family business that buys its supplies right there in the community, where the money can recirculate. In fact, family farms generate among the highest economic multipliers of all industries, which should make them the darling of economic development directors. Everyday life took longer and was harder. And you didn’t run to town every day to see what the boys were doing, or dance class with the daughter or soccer with the boys. People stayed home more. Saturday night was the time to go to town, and visit with friends and pick up supplies. Sunday was the Lord’s day, when you went to church twice a day and thanked the one that made all week possible. I was fortunate many years ago to have a dear neighbor lady give me a few pieces of ice cutting tools, and I have expanded that to a nice collection of ice harvesting tools. I thank her and many others for entrusting in me the preservation of a piece of history for the next generation. Here’s wishing you all a safe and happy ice harvest this winter. By TOM KOCAL Prairie Advocate TKocal@prairieadvocate.com SAVANNA — More than 200 people lined up along the railroad tracks on Bowen Street just west of the depot Thursday to wait for Holiday Train, which is on its annual journey through the Midwest, northeast and across Canada to raise money for area food pantries. “The Holiday Train’s mandate remains strong, and that is to help tackle hunger, regardless of borders or size of the community,” CP President and CEO Fred Green said in a news release. After the box car stage door was lowered, the CP Railroad Band got the crowd warmed up with a variety of Christmas tunes. Two CP representatives then welcomed the audience, and announced a $5,500 donation to the Savanna Food Pantry. “It’s hard to believe. If they give that amount to every town on their stops, they’re giving away over $1 million,” said Barry Eady, director of the pantry. Eady was grateful for the assistance from the CP and the people who attended the show. “Our clientele has increased this past year by quite a bit,” Eady said. “We used to run about 130-145 families per month. Now, we have about 170, and are pushing the 200 mark. But I have to thank God for this, because this pantry is doing great.

On top of what the CP gave us, we got $237 in donations. We had a very successful time, thanks to everyone’s generosity.” Since 1999, the CP Holiday Train program has raised $9.5 million and generated almost 3.3 million pounds of food donations.

“People think we run just on donations, both food and monetary. A lot of the food that we get, we are contracted with River Bend Foods in the Quad Cities. We pay for our food. Many people think we get it for nothing. The great thing about the wonderful food donations that

Shoppers roamed the downtown to shop for Christmas gifts, visit with Santa Claus, and mingle with live Dickens characters. The Good Samaritan Society and SS John & Catherine Ladies Society held Christmas bake sales. Residents picked up applications at Market Street Commons for the outdoor decorating contest; they’re due Friday and judging is Monday. Winners will get $25 in chamber bucks.

HCC trustees approve 2014 tax levy FREEPORT — At its Nov. 18 meeting, the Highland Community College Board of Trustees approved the 2014 tax levy. The annual levy is expected to provide $6.3 million in operating funds to support the district’s 2,300 fulland part-time students and public services. The college’s property tax rate of 49 cents per $100 of assessed valuation is estimated to remain year. The levy also aims to ensure that the college meets the requirements needed to be eligible for unrestricted state funding. “State funding has decreased annually — we’ve lost almost $300,000 over the course of the last 3 years,” said Jill Janssen, vice president of administrative services. “As a result, the state of Illinois provides only 13 percent of the funding needed to support the college. The traditional model of the state providing one-third no longer holds true. Revenue is now comprised of 45 percent local taxes, 38 percent tuition, and approximately 4 percent from other sources.” Highland sets forth one levy for the tax year that is shared by the four counties served. We grabbed fast food when we got there, and checked into the hotel to set up camp. The amount levied includes the assumption that HCC will maintain a similar tax rate to previous years. The collegeâ€™s overall tax rate for the past 2 years has been at or below 49 cents. Homeowners were taxed about 49 cents per $100 for their EAV. According to Janssen, the actual tax dollars received are based on the EAV of the district, which is determined in June following the tax levy. If the EAV generates more taxes than the district levies, those dollars cannot be collected. Conversely, if the EAV generates fewer taxes than the District levies, the total amount levied will not be collected. It is typical for the district to receive less tax dollars than is levied. â€œOur largest source of unrestricted state funding (Equalization grant) is dependent on the district levying at 95 percent of the maximum rate in our operating funds,â€? Janssen said. â€œThe districtâ€™s EAV decreased 4.1 percent from tax year 2012 to 2013, causing tax revenue to decrease.â€? Based on discussions with local assessors, the decrease in the districtâ€™s overall EAV from 2013 to 2014 is estimated at

about 1 percent. The college levy incorporates a higher estimated increase due to the importance of meeting the maximum rate in the Operating Fund. The tax levy for 2014 includes a protection, health, and safety project that will provide for outdoor security lighting upgrades. The college also levies the cost of the annual audit, liability insurance, workersâ€™ compensation insurance, and Social Security. Step 1: complete! Now they need your help! Congratulations to the Carroll County 4-H Foundation! After working hard for the past year, they are now a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, charitable organization. Thanks to surveys and local support this group has defined their mission and established several objectives to be accomplished throughout the next few years.

Established Need:

Limited state funding continues to strain our local 4-H programs financially. The burden to pay for this great program has shifted to families and local 4-H clubs. Assistance with camp scholarships and local community service projects relies heavily on volunteers and additional funds from 4-H families.

Solution:

The Carroll County 4-H Foundation’s mission is to provide financial assistance to promote and further enhance the Carroll County 4-H Program so that 4-H programs throughout our area can continue to grow and flourish What does this mean? The Carroll County 4-H Foundation will be organizing fundraising activities. Dollars raised from these activities will provide local 4-H clubs with grants for community service projects, 4-Hers with college scholarships, and develop additional programs to further build and strengthen the presence of 4-H within our local communities.

Poinsettias and how to keep them alive for holidays Adding color to the drab, dreary and oftentimes white days of winter, poinsettias represent 80 percent of all potted plant sales in the United States during the holiday season. For many years, the poinsettia has been the traditional “There are more than 100 varieties of poinsettias available today,” University of Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator Ron Wolford said. “And they come in a myriad of colors like red, white, pink and burgundy. light may cause the colorful bracts to fade. Indoor temperatures between 65 to 70 degrees are ideal for long plant life. Placing the plant in a room a few degrees cooler at night will extend the color show of the poinsettia. Temperatures above 80 degrees will shorten the life of the colorful bracts. Keep your poinsettia away from warm or cold drafts. Drafts can cause premature leaf drop. If you place your poinsettia in a

sunny location, make sure it never dries out. On the other hand, over-watering is the number one poinsettia killer. Water the plant when the soil is dry to the touch. After watering, thoroughly empty any water in the pot’s saucer. Be sure to punch holes in the decorative foil to allow water to drain through. Do not fertilize when the poinsettia is in bloom. Apply a houseplant fertilizer once a month after it blooms. “Research at the Ohio State University has shown that poinsettias are not poisonous,” Wolford noted. “Some people are sensitive to the plant’s sap, causing skin irritation. Obituaries Mary Anne Rippy Mary Anne Rippy, 77 yrs. old, of Lanark, IL, passed away on Wed., Dec. 3, 2014, in her home. She was born on Dec. 15, 1936, in Savanna, the daughter of Walter and Leta (Gunn) Gerbrick. Mary Anne and James Rippy were married on Dec. 4, 1954, in Lanark. She and her husband enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding, and mushroom hunting. I have lived in the wonderful community of Lena since 1976. One of the reasons we were attracted to this area is because we are avid horseback riders, and Lake LeAqua-Na State Park Equestrian Trails were there. The groomed trails are nice, but those back trails are great! If you can ride all of the trails, you can ride anywhere in the USA. Sad to say, park Superintendent Jamie Dowdall declared (on his own) that all the best back trails are closed. Granted, they are not on his “designated” trail map, but they are trails we have enjoyed for more than 40 years. In fact, most of them have been there much longer. How can one person come in here and do such a thing? I know you have much pressure put on you by the public unions, but we, the people,

Some of the excuses are: 1) Erosion – I would like you to come out here and let me show you that the back trails have no more erosion than the groomed trails, except for a couple of short areas. We riders would love to maintain

such regions if the public union would not be so protective of their jobs. I am sure the groomed trails will see more erosion when we are all forced to concentrate on them. 2) Liability – Dowdall says the back trails are too dangerous. Well, whenever you get on a horse, it can be dangerous, and our expanding government seems to think they can protect us from cradle to grave. It is not its job. This is just a mantra to expand its power. Every governing body has insurance. Besides, when

This is money that comes in from other states and is spent in Illinois, including camping fees, restaurants, groceries, gas, and more. As broke as Illinois is, we should consider privatization of jobs (like bankrupt Detroit). With the help of tax-paying citizen volunteers, a great job would be done for a fraction of the present cost to the taxpayers. We could save enough money to replace that endurance track they call a road that goes around the lake. In my lifetime, we have seen government and power grow. We are slowly losing more of our freedoms and rights all the time. In feudalistic times one would be arrested for shooting the kings’ deer. Now we could get arrested for riding on the deer trails.

All I hear is the clock ticking and the coffee perking. A fresh layer of snow covers everything outside. Thanksgiving Day reminds us to be thankful for all our blessings. This morning I am also thankful that God can bring beauty and blessings out of the hard times in life. Life is real, as you know, and sometimes we face â€œbumpsâ€? and things that arenâ€™t so pleasant. Yet God uses those times to make us aware of our need for him and he specializes at being there for us and giving us peace. Praise his name on this beautiful Thanksgiving Day! week. Danielâ€™s sister Mary had been helping them out for several weeks, which was so nice. How she worked! Plus she helped with Julia and Austin, too. Austin looks more and more like his big sister Julia. On Tuesday, Daniel and Mary traveled to Ohio and surprised Danielâ€™s parents. They are planning to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with them yet before returning home. Gloria has been enjoying cards and notes from her column readers. One of the blessings Iâ€™m thankful for right now is the blessing of friends and relationships, not only for friends and family around us, but also for those who touch our lives at one time or the other, like you have been touching Daniel and Gloriaâ€™s lives. It seems we ladies especially thrive on relationships. One of my sisters told me recently that the ladies of their church gathered at her house for breakfast. Not only did they enjoy breakfast together, but they also had a time of sharing. She said: â€œWe laughed together and we shed tears together.â€? I have a feeling every lady went home being blessed and refreshed. My parents, who live 400 miles away in Ohio, are planning to come to our home for the weekend. So Iâ€™ve been cleaning, planning menus and our married children to come home and spend time together as a family with my parents here. Daughter-inlaw Regina is preparing another meal for â€œOhio grandpas,â€? David and me, and our four children at home. That reminds me of another thing I am

Favorite Chili 3 pounds hamburger 2 cups onion, chopped 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 2-1/2 quarts tomato juice 1 19 ounce can kidney beans (or beans of your choice) 1 tablespoon cumin 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon taco seasoning 2 teaspoons paprika 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 cup brown sugar Fry and chop hamburger and onions in 6-quart kettle. 58 federally funded Illinois projects awarded $5.9 million CHICAGO – Illinois has been awarded a $5.9 million federal investment to create Illinois Safe Routes to School.Thisfederallyfundedprogram is designed to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school by creating a safe environment. The 58 projects encompass safety efforts such as repair and new construction of sidewalks, pedestrian countdown signals, speed

feedback signs and equipment for police to ensure students’ safety when walking and biking to school. In Carroll County, Savanna and the West Carroll School District will receive $160,000 to build a new sidewalk along Wacker Road and Will and Hickory streets. In Stephenson County, Pearl City will receive $138,590 to construct 8,648 square feet of accessible sidewalks connecting the south part

of town to existing sidewalks and creating a safe and direct path to Pearl City Elementary School. Illinois Safe Routes to School is a program of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration. It is designed to provide a safe environment to enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school and encourage a healthy lifestyle from an early age.
